I like how at 1:00 it sounds like it’s just a single note away from doing the normal “Mario World melody” but it gets subverted right at the final note. As though to tell the listener that it certainly has something to do with the original, but it’s still a new composition now.
I'm no music theory expert but it might be because the melody is played in a minor key and it's downtempo which are usually used in more slower or sadder popular ballads

It's a peppy goofy souper mairo song, but the melody seems to have this sense of longing that i just can't shake
