I would love to send you my families recipes for Funeral potatoes and easy chicken potpie casserole. If you are interested
I bake my sweet potatoes in the oven until soft. Wash them then oil and individually wrap them in foil. Bake until soft. Don’t smash them. Place them in a blender with the rest of the ingredients. Some sweet potatoes can be stringy so this step eliminates that.
BEING FROM THE SOUTH IN MISSISSIPPI WE EAT SWEET POTATO PIE ON A REGULAR. I DONT PUT NUTMEG OR GINGER , OR LEMON IN MY PIE. I MAKE IT WITH BUTTER, EGGS , THE SWEET MILK CINNAMON AND VANILLA PINCH OF SALT. MIX WELL AND POUR IN PIE CRUST THEN BAKE
Seeet potato pie is actually a Black American southern dish ….just not southern Blacks but most Black Americans this is a thanksgiving dessert dish. Please Please you must get a Black American person to teach you how to make it. Also Banana pudding is also a Black American dish and you now seeing more people who are not black trying to make these dishes
Try Paula Deen's recipe for Peach Cobbler. It is fantastic with vanilla ice cream❤
Made sweet potato pies a lot and I’ve never heard of ginger in a sweet potato pie. I use evaporated milk instead of condensed milk, along with eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, butter and salt. No lemon juice or ginger. You need to really mix it though. If you see spices or lumps from the potatoes, your pie isn’t mixed enough. For a smooth, fluffy pie, use a hand mixer to mix everything together before baking.
Also when you’re in NC, go to a really good Soul Food restaurant to try the sweet potato pie. Finally, sweet potato pie is ubiquitous throughout the south. Most families either have recipes for pumpkin or sweet potato pie.
Us North Carolinians know our sweet potato pie. We even make sweet potato biscuits at times lol
@@JB-sc6op I haven`t had a good sweet potato biscuit in 40 years. My grandma used to make them when i was a kid.
Many ppl use ginger but I don't like the flavor. I think becuz Pumpkin pie has similar ingredients like pumpkin spice that has ginger in it, ppl add it too. Not me. My mom puts ginger, orange zest and rum. I do too minus the ginger.
Mrs H, see if you can find some American pie pastry dishes, they have a sloped edge on them, not a vertical edge like a tart pan. The slope keeps the shell from sliding down. Also to blind bake, fill the shell to the top with dry beans atop parchment paper rather than rice, and the weight of the bean and the pressure along the side walls keeps it holding it shape better. All in all though, and as always, good job!
I use dry beans, but only need enough to cover the bottom. I’ve never filled the whole pie plate, but never had a problem.
@@AnnieDC304 I was just going to say...keep some dried beans for pie weights when blind baking. They work great. I keep mine in an air-tight container so I can use them again.
Olivia is a delightful addition the Show. I'd say she's like a Big Sister to Miss Baby H👶
Use your electric mixer next time to get a more thorough mix of the ingredients.
Sweet potato pie you can get mostly anywhere in the South, not just South Carolina.
And anywhere there is black folks. Lol I live in Pennsylvania and we make it just about every holiday.
@@Kim-427 Exactly! We grew up on it and we are from the north. Sweet potato pie ain't exclusive to the south.
@@ladiuneeq9789 I’m in the Midwest currently and can’t find good SPP unless I make it. The restaurants around here don’t serve it. Only pumpkin pie which I don’t like.
Mrs. H, if you bake the sweet potato instead of boiling it, it will be even sweeter. Boiling pulls out the natural sugars into the water that you throw away. If you bake them wrapped in foil, you will see the sugar trying to cook out as a thick syrup. Not enough escapes in baking to alter the flavor that much as opposed to boiling.
Sweet potato pie is meant to look very similar to pumpkin pie, generally it also has a little clove. If you crack eggs on a flat surface you are less likely to get shells in the bowl.
Look up Morrison's Sweet Potato pie recipe, Morrisons was a cafeteria in the south, and this recipe is perfect! NOT too many spices .
Very true. My family would order a couple for Thanksgiving each year. Love there recipe.
I love baked sweet potatoes with melted butter on them. So delicious 😋
Next time you make a sweet potato pie. Leave out the nutmeg and ginger, they are just too strong for sweet potatoes. Try using the Cinnamon and Allspice instead with some brown sugar. 😋
Allspice is to strong a spice
Nutmeg, cinnamon and a lil vanilla. No ginger I agree.
"From scratch", of course! Yes, please bring Alivia back. Elana's excitement is contagious and a 10! That is spectacular! Thanks for sharing, always a delight! BLY! xoxo
She can't miss out on those WONDERFUL burgers!! She'll love them!😊
I've never added ginger to sweet potato pie only the nutmeg and cinnamon. I've also never heard of adding condensed milk, only the canned evaporated milk. I live in Mississippi, and the state produces a lot of sweet potatoes. We have them quite regularly and are growing them in our garden for the first time . We usually just grow the red or white potatoes. I'm glad y'all enjoyed the pie. It's one of my family's favorites . God bless.
Is the difference that condensed is sweetened? I thought they were the same, but what I buy is evaporated.
I typically did not add ginger but learned my mom does just holiday season. She would make it with condensed milk and with regular milk. My older brother loved it with condensed milk. I prefer regular milk. 🙂
I've never put lemon or ginger in mine.
Oh yeah. I forgot about the lemon. Interesting.
South Carolina here born in North Carolina if you go to North Carolina you'd be fools if you didn't go to the Great Smoky mountains national Park. Those mountains are so old that they are part of the Scottish Highlands. Look it up if you don't believe me
Also, a lot of immigrants of Scotland and Ireland settled in the Appalachia region because its geography felt similar to home. Did not know that they use to be one in the same though! Thank you for that little tid bit of information.
Definitely two thumbs up for more Olivia, her facial reaction was too cute.
In pumpkin or sweet potato pies, I never use more than a quarter teaspoon of nutmeg - to me, it tastes a little bitter. Instead, I use allspice and cinnamon in both. And don't be afraid to taste the pie filling - before adding the eggs - to check for the spice level. Those are what make these pies delicious, otherwise they can be rather bland.
Dried beans work if you don't have pastry weights, that's what I've used in the past.
A friend of mine got his Ph.D. in sweet potato genetics at North Carolina State University. It's such a major crop in North and South America there is a demand for improved, new varieties all the time.
I would have cut back on the nutmeg because a little bit can go a long way. Maybe use about an eighth of a teaspoon. That may be the reason it had such a strong flavor. I prefer sweet potato pie over pumpkin at Thanksgiving, although I like pumpkin as well, but not as much as sweet potato.
I agree with you on the nutmeg.
I get sweet potato pie whenever it's available at my nearby deli/bakery and I don't think I've ever noticed it containing ANY nutmeg. Cinnamon certainly but not nutmeg. If a person is serving a large group with varying tastes I would suggest omitting it entirely. It's just too assertive.
Really good video. Mrs. H cooking with the young girls seemed so family wholesome to me.
Sweet and regular potatoes are both considered root vegetables but are only distantly related. Sweet potatoes are from the morning glory family, Convolvulaceae, and white potatoes are nightshades, or Solanaceae. The edible part of these plants are the tubers that grow on the roots.
Actually, unlike white potatoes, the leaves of sweet potatoes are also edible. They make a very nice green that I prefer over spinach. (Don't eat white potato leaves, though. Those are toxic.)
To make it more creamier, my grandma used to just keep on whipping it and whipping it until she got the strands out of the sweet potato that are part of it. Once she got all that out, then she started making the pie. It took a little bit longer but it does taste creamier.
When you get to the US, go to a good size super market & go to the pickle isle & find the "Gherkins". You will see the difference between those & regular whole pickles. Have a great day 😊.
Never saw granny or mom boil the sweet potatoes. They always baked.
Nah neve saw them baked i onky ever sawboiled
I've been watching this channel for a very long time albeit under different UA-cam accounts
I remember when Mrs h was pregnant and now I still find amazing how not only Elena has grown but also now communicating just watching her my son (28years old) just how truly amazing beyond belief god really out did himself just think about just how Complex we all are. Ok Mr and Mrs h be safe and take care wishing ur family all the best.
Any chance of a. "Sequel" maybe baby brother or sister?
Yes, Olivia is so much fun to watch. Bring her on as many times as you can.
I love sweet potato pie.
You should try buttermilk pie
Love your videos, I live in eastern North Carolina and would love to see you folks. Safe travels to you all!
I've never boiled sweet potato before to make a pie out of or just to eat. I've always baked them at 425f for pretty much any use. It's a heat sensitive food. It has to reach a certain temperature for the starches and sugars to caramelize to reach it's full sweetness. Generally poke it a few times with a fork, bake at 425 until it foamy burnt sugar starts to run out of it. Then mash it up to use in a pie or just cut it in half and add butter to eat it as is.
But the mix of spices in a sweet potato pie are like a pumpkin pie, it's a fall taste, thanksgiving and Christmas desert for sure.
Yes, all the warm spices are to be expected. Now carnalize in molasses almond pieces and add them to the pie. They give you a nice crunch over the creamy pie.
I grew up eating pumpkin pie, so I like it a lot. I love sweet potato pie. Mrs.H, y’all did a great job. :)
We love Alivia!! ❤️ Always a pleasure to see her and her beautiful hair! I'm so jealous!
She's the spitting image of Princess Merida from the Pixar movie Brave.
Sweet potato pie is good. I prefer pumpkin myself.
It’s not even a contest for me:
Pumpkin pie all the way.
Sweet potato pie tastes so much better than pumpkin pie in my opinion. I don’t like pumpkin and Mrs. H said she didn’t like the pumpkin either. What I don’t get are the people who can’t taste the difference. 😂
Sweet potatoes are versatile, they can be a side dish or a dessert. A lot of people will substitute a baked sweet potato in place of a traditional baked potato. The difference is with sweet potatoes you’ll use butter and if necessary brown sugar. My mother-in-law had a good recipe for a sweet potato casserole with a streusel topping made of brown sugar and chopped pecans. The custard in it was rich and velvety, but you need a stand mixer to get it blended properly.
Definitely need Olivia back for a burger day and a smoked bbq day.
I like sweet potatoes and have tried the sweet potato pie, it was good, just not my thing. I LOVE me some pumpkin pie!!! LOVE seeing Alivia in the videos, so would love to see her more, if she's wanting to join in! Love seeing the interaction between her and Elana!
I have never heard of ginger in sweet potato pie. I normally due cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar. I am from NC, and I can't wait to see you try sweet potato pie.
That sounds yummy.
Love sweet potato pie and pumpkin.
North Carolina produces 60% of all the sweet potatoes grown in the US 70% of exports. My neighboring county (Nash County) is where a lot of them come from. Also Sampson, Wilson and Johnson Counties. You can get them dirt cheap here at $10 for 40 pounds and they sell them everywhere out of the back of their pickup trucks. The very best sweet potato is a new one call "Bayou Belle". If you eat one of those you will see stars and contemplate your life choices.
I make mine with the cinnamon and vanilla. But I also put coconut in it. I love it.
Certainly a classic dish, glad you all enjoyed it. I usually only make these for holidays or special occasions, which is sad now that I think of it. These would also be good on Wednesdays. ;) I make mine topped with chopped pecans in a maple pecan glaze, served warm with a couple scoops of ice cream on the side. Good stuff. Hope you all have a blast in NC!
Alana gave a 10??? Not a 2? 🤣
Yeah here in North Carolina, I usually just bake my sweet potatoes and top it with lots of butter, cinnamon and sugar. I do love it in a pie though. Yours looked really good.
Mrs H teaching the next generation cooking skills. ❤
Tip: Next time bake the potatoes and use an electric mixer to get the lumps out. Also look for a recipe that includes brown sugar and white sugar. Evaporated milk instead of condensed milk.
Baking the sweet potatoes retain nutrients that are lost in boiling. Add a bit of Cointreau or Grand Marnier to make your sweet potato pie extra special (or frozen orange juice concentrate to make it Elana friendly). I use a low speed mixer to blend the filling then strain thru a sieve for a smoother filling.
That sounds so good!
I like this it but I like pumpkin a little better. Especially with whipped cream on top.😊
Greetings from Oklahoma! I love your videos
Did someone say pie... I'm in. 😁
Sweet potato pie is the bane of my existence. I love pumpkin pie and every year I'm bound to get a piece of sweet potato pie, which I cannot stand, on accident.
I detest pumpkin pie so I have learned to ask when I go to holiday gatherings what kind of pie it is so I don’t look like I have bad manners when my natural reflexes cause me to spit out food. 😂
Sweet potatoes love our red clay dirt lol😆
Can't wait for your videos of your visit to our state😀
Love and prayers from western NC❤❤❤❤
Hmmmm, I love that you guys try to cook everything yourselves, but that doesn't look like sweet potato pie. My Dad makes the absolute best sweet potato pie in the world. Even the church ladies order from him during the holidays. It's an art to make it well.
I agree, it looks more cakey than how our SP pies are.
I believe it’s because that recipe called for condensed milk. That completely messed up the pie imho. It made it more like a custard pie.
I have quite a few pumpkin pie recipes, all different but all good. Just reading thru today’s comments it sounds like there are a lot of different ways to tweak a sweet potato pie. They could all be good, though anyone might prefer one over another. ☺
If you're coming to the carolinas in july you're not ready for that heat. I would love to see you.Make it up to the appalachiand try some boiled peanuts.
WTG! You finally got a 10/10 from your hardest critic! LOL! Alway cinnamon, if I put in ginger, then I don't put in nutmeg. Both of those together make it too pungent of a taste for me. Glad you like it. Miss Liv is a great addition to your "show". :)
Great video and yes definitely have Olivia on future shows.
Try while ur in the states to find a pie pan u can bring home. Pie pans are sloped. I believe ur dish is a tart pan which are flat. It will make it easier when u make ur crust so they don’t slide down so much and shrink.
Love Elana's Minnie Mouse! And yor niece is delightful!
Olivia if you ever come to the States. Maryland has White Potato pie. It will blow your mind. Mrs H the next time you make Sweet Potato pie. leave out the nutmeg. Blend the Sweet Potatoes longer. Your color was a little off. The reason Sweet Potato Pie is a southern favorite is because the region grows Sweet Potatoes. We even make French Fries with them. Pumpkins are a Northern and midwest thing.
There is even a song called Sweet Potato Pie
My mom and grandmother used a toothpick to check to see if their bakery was done. Stick the toothpick into the middle of your pie etc,it it come out clean, your product is done.
Rhubarb pie is another Southern desert pie you should try
yes and Strawberry Rhubarb pie is one of my favorites. Those would be great for Mrs. H to try making.
My family grows sweet potatoes commercially in Louisiana...but I still prefer Pumpkin.
My mother always used Maple syrup drizzle and Pecans. So do I. :)
Gastonia NC USA ( Near Charlotte ). Y'all make me hungry !!
My family from South Carolina we live off sweet potato pie. Next time leave off the lemon juice and also use electric mixer never hand mix. Our secret we use flour no eggs.
Definitely would suggest tasting the filling since not all tubers are the same size. And adjust ingredients as necessary/to your liking (assuming you make it again). I never use a recipe when making this pie partially for that reason and partially because my mom never had a recipe, I just helped her make it. Using an electric blender is quite nice as well. Glad you enjoyed it.
I love sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, all the southern pies in general. They are all good. But some are a lot better than others.
Olivia definitely needs to come back for burgers.
Eastern North Carolina (80 miles due east of Raleigh, our state capital. enjoy your visit here.
You guys are a Groovy family. Hey, from San Jose, California.
Love ya'lls videos, such a wholesome channel. God bless you.
Awesome video. Glad to hear you're coming to N.C. I hope you find a few great restaurants to eat at while here. try the pulled pork.... eastern if you enjoy vinegar, western if not. Can't wait to see your next adventure.
Hope y’all have a wonderful time in NC bring shorts and tee shirts
I’ve always liked sweet potato pie more than pumpkin pie. I thought you did a good job considering it was your first time. When you get to the states, you might find that there’s not too much difference between your effort and what you will experience here.
I always think of sweet potato pie as a fall desert. Hope you can find one in May
Sweet potato pie is more popular in the south then pumpkin love it. Add some whipped cream on top.
I would not say it's more popular than pumpkin but sweet potato pie is more popular in the south than anywhere else.....I believe pumpkin would still win a poll.
@@tosweet68 not in Louisiana and Mississippi Sweet Potato pie wins.
I just use cinnamon in my sweet potato and pumpkin pies. I don't care for nutmeg or ginger in my pies. Sometimes I'll add peaches to my sweet potatoes, both in a pie and candied. I really like them candied with sweet potatoes. If I use canned peaches, I'll use the juice as it makes a nice syrup when it's cooked down with the butter and brown sugar when making candied sweet potatoes.
Sweet potato pie is my favorite pie especially my grandmother's homemade sweet potato pie from crust to filling. However my grandmother is long gone so I will never have that pie again even though she taught me how to make it.
You should look up a potato donuts recipe online and give that a try.
In N. Carolina, keep your eye open for quince pie. It is in no way as popular as sweet potato but you often find them in little places in the outer banks or other places with attractions.
We have sweet potato pie 🥧 every Thanksgiving and Christmas 🎄 ❤😊
We need to send them not just actual pie pans but also some mini-pie pans too.
Id rather have sweet potato pie over pumpkin anytime
I’m not going to give you a thumbs, but no way!
You and me both! : ) The funny thing is I don't like pumpkin pie but I do like pumpkin bread...go figure!
I like sweet potato pie, but I prefer pumpkin. What I do eat often, is a sweet potato with cinnamon butter and topped with chocolate hummus. Last pie I used yogurt instead of condensed milk, and Splenda. Also a little vanilla.
I like my sweet potatoes with brown sugar and marshmallows roasted on top, no crust. But pumpkin is still my favorite (when done right, especially if you can get a nice fluffy whipped one!).
Olivia has beautiful hair.
She looks like Emma Kenney.
just wanted to mention, pies like that, the filling is usually mixes with a handheld blender, so the chunks disappear, and the spices are evenlt distributed.
I prefer sweet potato pie to pumpkin pie. It's the texture.
Candied yams is similar, n my absolute favorite at Thanksgiving. U should try that as well. It has marshmallows on top, so lil h would love it too
love it when all 3 girls show up. Wish olivia would come out of her shell but still fun watching.
Both sweet-potato pie and pumpkin pie typically have cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, but my family doesn't care for the ginger, so we usually make or buy them without.
Sweet potato cake is the best! Try it.
I’m an American whose entire family is Southern and we eat lots of SPP. I have NEVER seen anyone put ginger in it and we use evaporated milk. Personally I like less nutmeg in my SPP. Some people overdo it IMO . I definitely prefer SSP over PP but some people say they can’t taste a difference. I do.
Do they sell dry beans there? Like dry pinto or navy beans either in a bin that you scoop how many you want yourself or in bag? If so they last forever in your pantry and they are good for using as pie crust weights. On Thanksgiving and Christmas my mom always made pumpkin and pecan pies. There were other desserts but those were the pies. I always really loved her pumpkin pie and I have always used her recipe. I like using the vanilla Cool-Whip when I eat.
Edit: yes those spices are normally used in a sweet potato pie or if you can get you can just use all spice which has all those spices mixed together in one bottle.
Nutmeg can be overwhelming if you add too much. Sweet potato pie is similar to pumpkin pie but I must say I prefer pumpkin pie… homemade of course. I do love sweet potatoes. Well done Mrs. H.
I'm odd in that I don't actually like sweet potatoes in sweet ways like a pie. However, I do like them savory. A favorite quick meal of mine is a baked sweet potato topped with crisped bacon and sauteed onion. They're also excellent in stir fry.
Try coconut custard pie. Hmmm I love that pie
Missouri here. I prefer sweet potato pie to pumpkin pie. Even though everyone in my family likes sweet potatoes, I am the only one that like them in pies.
Great job Mrs H.! I only use cinnamon in mine and I mix it with an electric mixer. By the way I am a North Carolinian born and raised.
Line the pie crust with parchment paper or foil before filling it with weight before blind baking. Much easier to remove the weight. I don't blind bake for sweet potato pie though. I don't use ginger or nutmeg in my sweet potato pie. My recipe doesn't call for ginger and I don't care for nutmeg.
You clearly had a bad pumpkin pie recipe… it’s very commonly made with not enough spice or the right sweetness (imo) when you get it at a grocery store / big box chain. Pumpkin pie should be as sweet as sweet potato pie, but with a hint more autumnal spiced flavors. Recipe should call for pumpkin purée and sweetened condensed milk, maybe even some added sugar, and then cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger. When properly prepared, such as grandmas recipe at thanksgiving, it’s one of the most popular in the USA. That’s for a good reason. So I would recommend giving it a crack with a better recipe
