  • In his first appearance on Podcast for Inquiry, Dr. Josh Bowen compared what we know about history from archaeology and contemporaneous literature with the stories from the Old Testament.
In today’s episode, Dr. Bowen reveals what the Bible has to say about slavery and genocide, and goes a bit outside his comfort zone to talk about whether the Old Testament should be considered a guide to a moral and ethical life.

Dr. Bowen gets an immediate like. We need mote actual scholars like him who aren't trying to push an agenda, but rather put the context back into how historical writings are viewed.

The Bible says about slavery: Yes, you can do that and you can treat foreign slaves as property. Nowhere does it ever say Slavery is undesirable. Nowhere. But apparently being gay (not a choice) is unacceptable.

Whoever wrote that book should reconsider his priorities.

Actually, the Bible doesn't really say that, but people who are anti-LGBTQ+ sure love to make it so and use it as a cudgel with which to beat people down. Now, I'll prefece this a bit. 1) Ancient people didn't really view homosexuality (or sexuality) like we do now. They did not have a concept of those things in the same way we do. 2) The Bible never says jack or crap about women in homosexual relations. Why? Well, that brings me to point three. 3) The issue the Bible mainly has is that it is who takes the..submissive role (for lack of a better word-the receiving part of the encounter) in their coupling. The issue was one of status and where you were on the rung of power. Men had the power, and women were property. So if a woman is not married, no one really cared if she is with another woman. Even if she was married, they sometimes did not care (assuming you were not flaunting it anyway.) This is because she couldn't get preggers and if you are already on the lowest social point (except slaves and even then...) Then you don't have to worry about the submissive nature of your x-ual relationships. Men were not supposed to put themselves into this submissive role.
As aside not....The Bible doesn't really care about the man stepping out too much either. Over and over in these stories, women are treated harshly in this regard. Men....not so much.
As for the slavery, nope, the Bible is 110% ok with slavery. Some try to say it was just for non-Israeli people, but that is not quite true. Is it MEN who were only allowed that time period to be enslaved. Girls, women...Israeli or not, could be sold into chattle slavery (many times x-ual slavery) for life (usually by their fathers or brothers.)

Not to mention wearing certain cloths together or eating shellfish, if the author wanted to convey slavery as evil as it is, then surely more important than boiling goats in milk

The movie Clerks! explored in depth the idea of contractors, roofers, plumbers, et al, on the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. Conclusion: they knew what they were getting into when they took the contract.

Uh yeah. It also highlights a god of jealousy who creates most people predestined to the not so good place, the one down there. ;) Don’t forget, according to Christian apologists genocide is just relocation, hence no biggy.
