It’s all a process dear and you’re not alone. 💚 Since they grow so slowly, one-two millimeters a year, it will take time for it to regain that round shape.
Lydia is also right, another youtuber said the same thing. They related it to currents. Naturally the moss roll in the water and maintain their shape. Otherwise they can begin to flatten. So this other youtuber would stir the water periodically and roll the moss gentally in the palms. Adding a current pump could work to.

Marimo that are kept outdoors during some part of the year can occasionally have visitors come and go. If your marimo is healthy there is no need for concern. It’s possible it could be a mosquito larvae. If you’re concerned we recommend soaking your marimo in an ocean bath. We have detailed instructions on our website under Marimo 🌱
I've taken an interest in getting these for my apartment. But marimo moss balls have been banned lately because of an invasive species of mussel found in them. I hope the issue will be solved soon so I can have some of these!
The issue won’t be solved the eggs of the muscles are hard to see. They breed extremely fast and well. And any water change you do in your tank will effect the environment that water ends up in. Unless you empty in the garden.. but, is it worth it having a cute green ball in your tank so, some muscle can slip in and effect other animals.
I just received one from Moss Amigos yesterday, and he is a little brown. I'm also experiencing sheding, but am not sure if this is normal for a new small marimo.

The salt helps heal any discoloration and also helps the general health of the marimo as they often live in brakish water. I recommend monthly salt unless you are dealing with brown or grey spots, then I add salt to weekly water changes.
Do you fertilize them in any way? I got my marimos a while ago and they didn't look very healthy. After a few months I put them in a fish tank, they started looking really nice after that. I recently got rid of the fish though and I want them to keep their healthy look.
Yes! I use sea salt or you can use aquarium salt too. I alway add a few drops of our Multi-Purpose tonic (our holistic plant tonics are on the website) in a bath soak for an hour or two, and then rinse well before adding back to their vessel.

when i revived my moss ball, due to the box it came in it was squished and now is like a flattened oval shape. do you have any tips on how to return it to a circular shape? 💚
Just roll it around the palms of your hands a few times until the shape returns. In addition you can stir the water every so often as in nature its the currents that roll them around giving them their round shape
Every time you see it, roll it up gently. If you want to keep it in a fish tank, get a betta fish with it. It will keep the fish nice and healthy by absorbing debris and nitrates but the fish will play with it and roll it around giving it its natural form.
We purchased about 7 of these moss balls at an aquatic exhibit, ranging in size from 1.25" to 2.5" for around $10...that was nearly 2 years ago. They've done quite well in our 75 and 29 gallon planted community tanks, and have really grown in size! The two largest ones are around 4" but have started to loose their shape. Now, I've taken them all out for a really good rinsing and noticed that the largest ones I can easily squeeze down to around a golf ball size with little pressure, as compared to the ones I've seen on some videos. They don't seem to have any particular structure to them and was wondering if I should allow them to breakdown into smaller portions, what would you suggest? Thank you in advance!
WoW! Sounds like you have quite the lovely collection! I would suggest leaving the larger ones alone to grow. As they get larger, like your 4" sized beauties, they have more space inside their interior, so it is normal for them to condense down in size more easily than the smaller ones.
My newest moss ball has a plant growing out of it. I dont know what it's called but I have the same plant in my tank already that I got it out of the Mississippi river. Basically the large one in my tank has at almost every inch on the stem there are about 8 pine needle/wishbone shaped leaves. So I'm not sure if I should leave it or not. But I know my ghost shrimp lover these moss balls, always picking at the stuff that gets caught in them.
Your video is very informative. Glad I found you on UA-cam. I have two glass vessels with four or five Marimos. The smaller ones have a tiny section sticking out of it . When I clean them, I roll them and the larger ones keep their shape, but the smaller ones have this extra piece sticking out. What can I do to get it back to it's round shape without this extra piece. Thank you 🤢
Hi Carmen and thank you for the kind comment. If the extra piece sticking out is bothering you, you can very gently trim it off with clean, sharp scissors taking care not to pull away any of the filament surrounding the rest of the ball.
I wish I was an expert on this subject, but I haven't personally tried to grow them alongside fish. However, I would suggest if you need to salt them, rinse them well or soak them in distilled water before adding to the tank with your beta.
What is the pH balance of the water after the mineral water is added? I ask because I have machine I can make any pH water I need and I have a few Marino that aren't bad but could be looking better. I just let them spend the night in the fridge and as of now I use a 6.0 water for them which I switch out every other day, basically the pH of rain water, is that sufficient or should I use something else?? I have found out all three of my moss balls in my fish tank so I curing them all one by one then adding them back I am doing the smallest to largest I thought the green they were was fine but when I was cleaning them and rounding them back into shape I realised they were a little tiny of green

I had marimo in a fish tank, but they didn't look so hot and I removed them to a different container, where they have rebounded. However, when I got better water flow in the fish tank, I noticed thready green fibers growing on the top of one of the ornaments in the tank. I was afraid I had contracted some sort of gross algae issue, and pulled off some of the threads. Instead of being squishy like problem algae, I noted they were rougher and looked a lot like the marimo balls. After some investigation, I discovered they are in fact the same thing. I've looked online to see if there is any information about this phenomenon, but I can't find any. The fibers in the balls are fairly short, but some of the flowy ones in my tank are 3 or 4 inches long. Do I have marimo strings or something? Any idea?

So I just baught mine from petsmart they look like both of urs dark green but they have some brown spot I am planning to put them in the fridge to times a month and I gave them a salt bath right when I got them I need some tricks to make them thrive and no 8 do not have a beta with them because mine sadly pasted away

Definately use filtered water. I get cold tap water, filter it, boil it, filter it again, leave it refrigerated over night, then that water is perfect for them to go in. Also a few drops of fertiliser every week! Hope this helped!💓
I'm lucky enough to live in a city (Portland Oregon) where the tap water is perfectly fine to use for marimo. However, the comments below are correct, if you don't have this luxury, definitely use distilled or filtered water. Rain water is the best and most natural water to recreate their natural environment, so yes to this if you can collect enough to clean every 7-10 days. Hope that helps!
Seachem makes a declorinator called Prime, it bonds to the chlorine and removes it from the water, you can also add in their aquatic plant fertilizer "flourish" or "flourish potassium"

If your worried about the water you can always get a small bottle of seachem prime from your local pet store to remove chlorine, and a small bottle of flourish to add nutrients the plant needs to truely thrive
Yes, they are an aquatic plant and act as a small natural water filter helping remove ammonia, nitrite and nitrates from the water, you will still need to change your water regularly depending on the size of your tank, minimum space for betta fish is 5 gallons for 1 fish, I personally recommend 10 gallons, betta fish along with gold fish are one of the most abused pets in the aquatics hobby because people are told they can be put in tiny spaces.

I just got 2 today and same 1 was fine and one was flat you just need to keep rolling it

Definately use filtered water. I get cold tap water, filter it, boil it, filter it again, leave it refrigerated over night, then that water is perfect for them to go in. Also a few drops of fertiliser every week! Hope this helped!💓

I'm lucky enough to live in a city (Portland Oregon) where the tap water is perfectly fine to use for marimo. However, the comments below are correct, if you don't have this luxury, definitely use distilled or filtered water. Rain water is the best and most natural water to recreate their natural environment, so yes to this if you can collect enough to clean every 7-10 days. Hope that helps!
Seachem makes a declorinator called Prime, it bonds to the chlorine and removes it from the water, you can also add in their aquatic plant fertilizer "flourish" or "flourish potassium"

If your worried about the water you can always get a small bottle of seachem prime from your local pet store to remove chlorine, and a small bottle of flourish to add nutrients the plant needs to truely thrive

Yes, they are an aquatic plant and act as a small natural water filter helping remove ammonia, nitrite and nitrates from the water, you will still need to change your water regularly depending on the size of your tank, minimum space for betta fish is 5 gallons for 1 fish, I personally recommend 10 gallons, betta fish along with gold fish are one of the most abused pets in the aquatics hobby because people are told they can be put in tiny spaces.
