After years of not understanding the correct order of the modes I finally got it thanks to: "I Don't Particularly Like Modes A Lot" Ionian Dorian Phrygian Lydian Mixolydian Aeolian Lochrian 😊
This is sooo helpful, Julia. I've always had only a faint idea of the modes in principle, but none about how they can help in bass playing - I really hope you're going to continue with this series. Thank you.
When I open the computer and watch a new video of yours, the day starts better. It is great news that you make these tutorials, you have the ability to make it less difficult to explain so much knowledge. Your entire UA-camr family appreciates your generous effort.
From an amateur bass player's point of view - this type of video is very helpful, and I really appreciate it. It's something I can and will take to the practise room straight away. From an experienced classroom teacher's point of view - I'm so impressed with what you achieved in less than 8 mins of video. The breakdown, content, and structure of this short lesson are superb.
Dorian is used in many folk songs and sea shanties, as well as funk. It's fantastic. The Wellerman is a great example, though perhaps not for bass. But I'm sure a minimal bass line would work great.
Julia as usual great job, appreciated! Learn and enjoy playing bass guitar is delightful, but watching you makes it a better experience. Don’t stop being our inspiration! Thanks a lot.
Really looking forward to more in this series. Coming from traditional Irish music, but loving to freely intuit and improvise on anything from rock to jazz to world music, modes help explain much of the mystery of western music. Perhaps a follow-on series with Arab, Eastern, and other world music scales? I'd love that, too!
You inspire me to catch up(newbie). I've liked watching since I saw you on the Marcus Miller livestream special. He was not fair to you. Keep bringing the thunder and never back down from anyone.
Thanks so much for posting this. You are a great teacher. You are fun to watch. I noticed Geezer butler from Black Sabbath also uses a lot of Dorian scale.
Miles starts to use doriam for funk in So What. Maybe the first funk song in the world. And this song give to the bass players a special place doing the theme
Yes, the Bootsy funk formula! =) It's a great scale also for guitar when improvising modal grooves. Great video as always, Julia and killer bass and sound, wow! Have a nice weekend =)
I mainly play acoustic guitar, but love playing the Dorian mode! You can also start with your pinky from the major scale. BTW, she's just too cute when she gets the funk going!
Yeah I prefer the "variation of major or minor" approach but I think of it as a minor with a major 6th. Yours works too! Or as like, a minor version of mixolydian
Great tip @cactustactics I've always done one or the other and didn't think to mix them up to whatever is easiest. ex. Phrygian. Major variation is "busy" with flat 2, 3, 6 & 7. Much cleaner as minor with flat 2. Same thing. Less to clutter the mind
@@robgeller1 honestly I think it's whatever works in the context - like mixolydian with a minor 3rd might just be the perfect way to think about Dorian in a particular situation! But yeah I like major or minor as a starting point - like the whole thing with Phrygian is that it's minor, but it has that flat 2nd giving it that characteristic tone, so it's nice to be able to think of it that way
Love these vids, thank you. Personal comment: on the page that comes up on your gear link, perhaps you could also include the type of strings (flats or round) and the gauges.
Oh, Julia! I love you!😍😍😍You are so beautiful! And your bass playing skills are so high! And also you are so clever! You know all that scales, and modes, and stuff! Just amazing!
Is it safe to say whenever you want the Dorian for a given root, just go down a whole tone and grab that Major diatonic scale? So A Dorian = G Major .. and so on
It might be better to say for a given parent key, as the root of A Dorian is A and the root of G Major/Ionian is G. G Major is the parent key of A Dorian.
Yeah the modes come from playing the major scale but starting on a different degree of the scale. So if you play G Major but start on the 2nd (A) you get A Dorian. And if you want to work backwards like you're doing, you need to ask "what major scale has A as its 2nd note" - so yep, G major! (Or G Ionian if you want its modal name) Personally I don't really thinking of modes like that, although it can be useful to think of them relatively sometimes. For me it's more useful to start with a major or minor scale (we usually learn them as separate patterns, not "play C major but start on the A" for A minor!) and think of the modes as variations on those. So Dorian is minor but with a raised, major 6th. It helps you understand what's special about it and you know what notes to really lean on for that character!
The fact that you can use the same fingering pattern is really sweet!! Love your lessons and tidbits! I have a sneaking suspicion that your middle name is "funk" !😉

I have no idea what was happening in this video because I am not a musician, but I try to leave comments to support your channel. I usually find something relatively intelligent to say. All I have today is that I remembered the scene in Spinal Tap where Nigel writes a lovely song (in D minor, which is the saddest of all keys) for his song Lick my Love Pump. Sorry for the lame comment, but IYKYK. I'm going to hide in my blanket fort now. So sorry.
„Not sad at all“. Your condemned to listen to „Love Will Tear Us Apart“ 3 times a day. Then one of your next lessons will be the use of open strings to play harmonics as Peter Hook does in the saddest dorian mode song of all times:-) To me it has a dream like quality as in Riders On The Storm by The Doors. Although they play around with the third and the minor third on the 4 of the dorian scale.❤
“Don’t Forget We Are Funky Now!” Julia makes me seriously consider giving up on guitar to study bass instead. So awesome! ua-cam.com/users/clipUgkxHnDvjPHOd9uJ7TNe90TZIlCEU9KcPBa2?si=bmgPunX-0irFsN5Y

I have been playing for years and years and never fully understood modes. This just opened my eyes to a whole new understanding. Finally! Thank you!
Wow..if this is going to be a series.. I'm stoked!!
yes please :)

Julia IS THE BEST!
Julia is #1!! Please do a scale series, these are very helpful!
My favorite demonstrator is also my favorite teacher! Who knew? Thank you.
This was awesome. Thanks Julia & Thomann's for great videos
Yes more please. Would love to see you play it on an upright sometime.
Keep giving us mode overviews! I play one each time I practise and am trying to have them in my memory to use for improvising

Best Dorian tutorial I’ve seen. Thanks for making it easy. 👍

Julia, you are my bass hero! Regards from Brazil
I love the sound of this Sandberg California 2 VM4 bass 👌
Gracias

The only mode I need 😅
"Don't forget we are funky now" with a German accent is great!
Excellent and easy to understand lesson. I made up a little key of A Dorian bassline from your lesson, so much fun! Thank you Julia. Cheers from USA

Enjjoyed the video very ,cuh; do you have other videos on all other Modes
SO GOOD
The portrait of D Dorian ? 🥴 Interesting as usual. More mini-tutorials please!

Julia, New hairstyle? Looks great! (Great bass lesson, too:-)
Julia... You got the funk...💙👊😎
Happy New Year Pinaple Girl 🙂
what bass is that? It has the same pickup on the bridge as a stingray, but has a FAT split on the neck, what is this bass? :) looks great!
Oye Como Va - Santana D-dorian
And sure enough, this attempt by me to understand modes is as successful as all the other attempts. Not the first clue what is going on
Did you ever play a Warwick?
You're awesome.

Julia, Can you please tell me what bass that is? I can't read the name on the videos.

What strings do you have on your bass, if I may ask?

Hey Julia, I see you are using in ears. But the ones you have are not custom. Do you have a custom set? Would you like a custom set for you?
If Dorian was funky enough for Benard Edwards, it's good enough for us.
do the series for god sake! :)
Top 5 “The Police “ basslines #sting
Great video TY ! Dorian W H W W W H W - Chords ex in Am > 1 Am - 2 Bm - 3 CMaj - 4 DMaj - 5 Em - 6 F#dim - 7 GMaj
Not a big fan of the tone but I like the lines she's coming up with.

Julia, you’re shouting 😂
The Germanic accent comes out as "Dorian Moat". You should "built" a castle to go with your moat. LOL.
