Al Di Meola - Killer guitar player, writer and band leader. Every performance I've seen of his has been an "On the edge of your seat" show.
I'm gonna smoke a bowl to this... ☮🔥
I've been a fan of Al since 1974 when he joined Chick Corea and Return to Forever. He is technically one of the finest guitarists the world has ever seen. And his work with John McLaughlin and the recently departed Paco de Lucia on acoustic guitar, "One night in San Francisco", was one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
Awesome Al, he was here in Arizona last February, and I had middle seat first,
And that was the 4th time to see and hear his magic
Anyone got a time machine? I need to get to Berlin about a week before this in 1978. Not willing to sell soul, though will make you the sole beneficiary of my estate for one way ticket.
As complex a guitarist Al DiMeola is, I still love the tone he gets out of his Les Paul cranked through a Marshall.
Virtuoso means nothing - di Meola is musically right 🥳😂🏄🏻♂️
Came across this album today in 2024 and came looking for a live version of this. These dudes are incredible.
The Bass player is a monster!!
What abouth a drumerr??
おれもそのように思う。
アンソニージャクソンもすごかったけどね。
Tim Landers! Awesome player. And Robbie Gonzalez on drums is fantastic too. This band was as good as Di Meola himself, super tight and musical playing.
His tone is very cool as well
Al Di Meola- not only can he shred on that Les Paul, he can play the hell outta timbales!
That's because the great late Eddie Colon showed him a few things. Not a very good timbale player, sorry bro Lol
Well, originally Di Meola was a percussionist so he knows his way around a drum.
What a bass player
Still have the records, man.
i love the tone on tim landers bass!
He gets it from his boots!
Al Di Meola is the only jazz guitarist that makes me headbang and dance
Same here! His playing has actually influenced quite a number of metal players too, such as John Petrucci and Yngwie - no wonder his music sounds so headbang-able!
Help me out with defining a "Jazz guitarist." I actually got to chat with Jean-Luc Ponty behind a show in the green room who has done at least one project with Al and he made the comment "He's not really Jazz." How do we define a Jazz guitarist? The chords? The writing style? The picking technique?
mostly the cords and timing, he's technically a fusion musician which is sub a ganre of jazz.
@@mh287 actually the chords aren't as important as you would think. snarky puppy does a hell of a job making harmony with a simple solo progression that is only root notes. take lingus for example. there is an insane amount of things you can solo with when you only play root notes.
@@jeremiahsalyer7784 Al Di Meola has/is his own style . . . one description might be termed as fussion but it's so much more than that . . . so unique it can't be pigeon-holed into any single music genre . . .
Al Di Meola is the original guitar hero. And still the best. He's better now, more than ever.
Final challenge on Guitar Hero - THIS SONG or "Mediterranean Sundance"
the world is a better place because of people like Al. love doesn't need words.

Al di Meola is the shit. He's the fucking best guitarist ever!! John Petrucci can stay out of this, because Meola owns him. As a founding innovator of jazz fusion, Meola spawned a whole new generation of shred guitarists and instrumental rock virtuosos who wanted to stand in his shoes! Look at Shawn Lane, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, or Jason Becker. Meola started it all.
Noah I know this comment was 7 years ago but came across this video and saw this so had to tell you...I live close to John Petrucci and have met hi a number of times. He is truly one of my favorite guitarists and a really nice guy. Ran into him in Lowe's with his wife buying light bulbs. we talked a little and of course we talked about Al DiMeola. He is a Al DiMeola fan to the end!!! We talked about how Al is one of our idles. And I told him he was one of mine. He didn't say the same back just said oh thanks man! lol
I wonder what it must have been like to hear this back in the 70s for the first time...
Me 2. Must have been Mind Blowing!
It was mind blowing. Al Di Meola, RTF got me through my college years. While most of my buddies were jamming to 70s metal/hard rock exclusively, I was tuning in to jazz fusion. It was eye opening and unbelievable to witness in concert. Having picked around on the guitar for a while, you realize how difficult this music is to play.
Brad Alker Your college years must have been so cool hehe. I still have all of Al's album
I tried not to be an asshole about it in my high school years (class of 1976), but when I heard people talking about Frampton or Page or any other "guitar god" of the time, I'd just say, "Man, let me loan you a cassette that will blow those guys into the dust." Anybody who gave Land of the Midnight Sun a listen would hand it back with this look on their face like WHAT????
Saw this exact tour .....I was 21 and became a fan immediately...Hammersmith ,,,,,,,,blew the roof off the place...He was still associated with Return To forever and we went along in anticipation ....He did let us down ........one of the great guitar technicians and talents.......
Paul Baily I saw this tour as well in Buffalo. A punk band opened and was booed off the stage.
@@JetEarlewood Lol, I don't dislike punk (depends on the band) but who was the dumbass who orcanized that opening act?😅
Bassist had to rock a piss, @5:18 Al is saying "Just go', That's why there's an extended percussion solo.
Such a consumated pro. Al is a great, nice fellow too. I met him a month ago after a show of his.
Dude never ages
Al Dimeola is the greatest all around guitarist of all time, imo. Nobody has a more impressive body of work combining electric and acoustic. I would put his first 4 solo albums up against anyone technically. I wish there was a live recording or a video of “Golden Dawn Suite”
MASTERPIECE!!!!!
This is the only live footage of this era i've seen, glad it exists, it shows what a badass Al is..
Amazing early footage of Al Di Meola! Thanks for sharing.
Maestrasos wual bajo y guitarra súper
I think I played the studio version of this song a billion times.I am not a fan of jazz but fusion is fine. I don't know what to call this style, I guess it's all his own and brilliant.Al reminds me of Linda Ronstadt, another performer who looks like they're using no effort to reach those incredible high notes or speedy playing as in Al's case. Ony the lights would make him sweat.
this must the greatest bass player ever, to be able to pair like that? fuck man, that dude kicks ass from 1:55 on, bad ass
i love how the song starts out fast and goes into a half-time feel to make it sound so heavy
Hardest working drummer in show biz right there! Cat can beat the skins!
The only guitarist, whose shredding sounds warm and effortless when transiting into usual bends and single notes, PLUS that ol' vintage sound (unlike today's compressed, lifeless, dull). I never though of him as tehnician, although he has superior techinque, but rather warm, inovative, original, and soulful guitar player. One of kind!
That soulfulness is the jazz aspect of his style.
Picking Technique....Badass!
Al is divine and the band is tight as hell! Great, just great!!!!
when al gets into it he looks like hes gonna kick off i love it
That concert was a "Happening".
Caught this tour in Austin, Texas. Fabulous!
Wow always wow
Wow how fuking mind-blowing is this?😮 Aldi Meola actually play drums along with being one of the world's top guitar players. Talk about a one-man band huh😊
wow the drum solo goes some awesome places
Good star gazing music makesure to smoke some oldschool weed like thai or acapulco to appreciate the music
wow this is awesome thankyou
pure class!!
Lurch is beating those drums like they owe him money! Awesome!
The First Tune on His First Album i do believe......nice start.....
Hidden gem. I'm loving it more each day.
he's a classic freewheeler. Santana beyond. !
When friends used to ask me what his style was like I would describe him as Santana on steroids! Lol
@@rogerwilliams9656 Yup, pretty much. Santana does have some Meola-sounding pieces too, but the guitar playing is not on Al's level.
Замечательно!
Wow! I'm new to this, but its ridiculous.
Enorme!!!!!
philippe saisse on marimba just 16 years old

Al a great Timbale player? Who knew!

Good times!
It's a matter of option but Al Di Meola is definitely in my top10 greatest guitarist's of all time even though Rolling Stone Magazine excluded him from the top 100 greatest guitarist's list. He's entire discography is genius and even before his solo career with Return To Forever (Chuck Correa) day's. The man is just Brilliant. One of the best ever guitarist and not surprisingly a good percussionist... Yeah Baby
we are talking "GOD" of the guitar here.
***** Ta for your confirmation. You must have impeccable taste and understanding of music. Ha! Ha! The main man is so accomplished in feel, scope and technicality with audience appreciation from 8 to 80 year olds. I played grandmother Spanish Eyes when Splendido Hotel came out but then had to hide the album because she would sneak in when I wasn't about and play it. She thought I didn't know but when I went to play it there stood out all the grubby paw marks on the vinyl. BUSTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
maybe not the best but my favorite. his compositions never age and so magestic
A tear jerker of an emotionally moving guitarist and an unrivaled song writer. An undisputed legend in the world of artistic guitar.
you just said it
He convinced me when I saw him and his band live in Atlanta. I mean, holy smokes! I got to shake his hand when the show was over!!!!! #GuitaristGeekOut
YES !!
He certainly makes it look easy,,, trust me folks...it isn't. Behold ...decades of practice.!!!!!
Damn, that's good shit!

Y so much
Well it wasn't he alone. mc laughlin and others are to be named here aswell =)
E-Pf?
1:27 do you know what i mean?
Satchel can drum at same time as soloing .......
What's E-Pf?
He actually looks older here than he does now
It’s funny you say that. When I was a kid my friends and I had this running joke about how every how Al’s look is different on every one of his solo albums.
Always bizarre to hear kids praising this metal guitarist and that "hero" the problem is there is a certain Al being a musical virtuoso! Not only fast but deep !
Drumming
Anybody else thinks America ripped off this song for "You Can Do Magic"?
