Nice video. I too have also visited this lovely railway. During the summer it’s very busy!

great video of a line which I have yet to visit. The railway's German nickname "Der rasender Roland" is a joke about the very slow speed of the trains - rasen can mean "to rage" but it also means "to rush".

Thank you, Roderick, for explaining the nickname of the railway. It has puzzled me ever since I visited the line. I hope you manage to visit it, and perhaps also the railway I’ll cover in the next video on the nearby ‘Molli’ railway.

I've been on the Roland Rassender. Fantastic train journey.

Yes, it’s a fantastic railway, and located in the far north east of Germany means it’s less well known than other narrow gauge lines such as the Harz railway

@Gareth Jones I was up on the Ost See as a guest to a wedding. Had a couple of days spare, so we went exploring and found it purely by chance. A great day out.

Awesome scene at 6:40 of the locomotive on the long straight stretch. The steam exhaust and smoke is mixed just perfectly. Lots of other great clips too. Excellent video!

Thank you for your kind comment. I was very lucky in that the very strong wind was blowing in a perfect direction and pushed the smoke and steam straight back over the train.

Another great video! What time of year was this trip made (clearly not summer?!?!) and what year? Update: I see in the credits it was 2019 and in the thick of winter!

What a great railway. Is it well used by the locals? How many passengers do you think they get per train?

Locals use these trains just occasionally (usually elderly people without a car) but the number is really low.
It is mainly a tourist attraction and tourists likely exceed 90% of the annual ridership.
Main ridership is during summer. So, during low season (autumn/winter/spring) the scale tips a bit more towards local ridership.
Without tourists the line would´ve been gone long ago.
Oh, btw. all staff is employed by the company. So, only professional staff.
Nevertheless it is officiall public transport and thus receives some money from authorities similar to local bus operators.
Other lines further south generate a higher percentage of local passengers but none of them runs without subsidies.

My visit was in early February 2019, so definitely not the holiday season. The service trains were of six carriages and I was surprised that they were quite well filled. Rugen Island is a major tourist resort. In the summer I am told the trains are very well used.

@@GarethJonesPilipala True but Rügen has evolved into a year round holiday destination although the cooder seasons bring much less tourists.
My parents live in Stralsund. So, I usually pay a visit to the railway when I´m there. But I go to Bad Doberan as well. They do have the fastest narrow gauge trains in Germany going up to 50 kph (30mph). That´s quite fast for a 900mm gauge railway - steam hauled ...Those east German narrow gauge steam railways are a very curious thing as all of them are part of the public transport system and not solely for tourist purpose even though tourists form the majority of passengers.

not Raging Roland, but Racing Roland.

    • @GarethJonesPilipala

I've heard that both names have a ring of truth. Raging Roland refers to the constantly strong winds that 'rage' across the area and Racing Roland because of the speed of the train. But the maximum speed of the locomotives is only 19mph. I don't know which name is correct.
