I found it cathartic? Anno is known to be outspoken about the direction of anime culture in japan as becoming hyper consumerist rather than a medium for artistic expression and innovation. He half blames the success of Evangelion in the early 90s because of it. I found the rebuild movies a kind of closure.
All the pilot's maturity both physical and mental could even be thought of as to letting them go. When Asuka says "not aging is the curse of the Eva" might literally mean its the curse of the show, that the collective view of these characters have not changed for almost 20+ years and the merchandise bought and sold is evidence of that.

I don't think you can separate the two. The Rebuild takes the assumption that you've seen the anime, and every diversion it takes from the original narrative adds meaning to and comments on the original.
From a visual standpoint, the original anime is more impressive, but Rebuild I think is a necessary addition to complete the narrative in a satisfying way. (And there's a manga that's totally bitchin' that also builds onto the extended narrative.)

As a young teen, I was harsh on Shinji for being "weak" and running away from his "cool" destiny of piloting an awesome giant robot while being unaware of being a hypocrite who is trying to run from my own teenage problems. I took around 20 years to realize that the thing I considered Shinji to be weak for, was done by *every single adult* in the series. Every adult in the series is struggling with their own issues and rather than dealing with it themselves they push it onto Shinji, a freaking *14 year-old* who definitely reacting in the only reasonable way. I find it very fitting that the true answer to Shinji's plight is not "rationally" using a time-loop to find a perfect answer but the irrational leap if faith of emotionally "growing up" and talking out his issues with his father.

The thing is that Shinji reached a level of understanding of the self in the finale of the anime, choosing not to have instrumentality, but many of the fans were displeased due to the wholly cerebral ending and the budget missing to animate those episodes properly. The show made money afterwards, which is why we got EoE, but that was a different cycle than the one the show had, and Anno took out a lot of his frustrations through it, which is why it's so bleak. The rebuild series has Shinji break the cycle, likely because in addition to Shinji getting a better resolution, he also brings Gendo to a better resolution. The ending of the series was a good ending, but it wasn't the "best ending". Now we have that best ending for all, since there's no need for the Eva's and that means there's no need for the hardships that caused issues for many of the characters in the series. They can all move on and live.

To be honest, movies 3 and 4 could have been consolidated together into a single movie have they not modified the lore. The extra Eva's and new spears were totally unnecessary. And the ships were a distraction. Instead they should have explained Mari's background because it is interesting.

It's strange. I feel like the rebuild series was terribly underwhelming. This last movie was no exception. Lots of unnecessary fan service, empty theological references (the original had meaning to the plot, although Anno loves to troll saying it doesn't) and TERRIBLE action scenes. It wasn't nearly as complex and deep as the originals. But I absolutely LOVED this last movie. It was garbage. It just didn't give a shit about the series "standards", coming even to the point of parody (nothing convinces me otherwise, the "pseudo-instrumentality" section had MANY parody moments, like that TERRIBLE cgi scene of the evas battling in the most pathetically ridiculous way... even the scenario was a set!). It felt like Anno just giving a big middle finger to what people glorify about the series. Think about it: the scene where Asuka force-feeds Shinji is IMPECCABLY animated, and so the scenes where Rei is planting rice. And I LOVE it. It's all about the character's feelings and personal development. Did we "need" this movie, in the sense that the series needed closure? Absolutely no. EoE was more than enough to close everything and to convey what Anno believed. But it sure is amazing to watch this last movie and see all the characters having their happy endings (well, most of them...). Most of all, finally seeing Shinji grown up, developing all his virtues into a healthy life. It makes me happy for Anno, too. It makes me feel that this was not only Shinji's growth, but his too. I don't know if he is a good person, but as much as I feel connected to his work I can only feel very happy for him.
In summary: Thrice upon a time wasn't a conclusion. It was a goodbye. A heartfelt, intimate goodbye. One that I loved, that made me very happy. The original series will forever be there, as it always had. But we can finally feel, after all this time, that Shinji and Anno finally grew up, and found hope. And I think that this is why we can finally say it: Goodbye, all of evangelion!

The only person that made Asuka a ‘doll for the public’ and ‘disposable’ was Anno himself. He stated in an NGE-era interview that Asuka and Rei as female characters existed for both long-haired and short-haired preferences respectively. The commercialisation of both the Evangelion franchise and the characters affirms this, with Gainax approved media such as the Shinji Ikari Raising Project and Girlfriend of Steel existing purely for fanservice. The amount of fanservice in the Rebuild films also affirms this. Don’t tell me you don’t notice those needless shots of Asuka and Rei that add nothing to the narrative. However clearly these characters morphed into more than just ‘preferences’ and alongside that decision, so did the vision for NGE. But cmon, how are gonna say the Evangelion fandom perceives Asuka as an ‘erotic doll’ when the creators force that perception on us?
Now I’m not arguing whether or not this should or should not be included; that is an entirely different argument. I’m arguing that Anno recognizes the commercialisation of his characters and supports it’s in some form. However I do agree that in same way, shape or form, the ending of 3.0+1.0 is somehow metonymic of our placement and value of Evangelion as a form of escapism, and that he is arguing that we should move on and live - in a world without Evangelion. But that poses the question - Why is he including so much fanservice? Why does Girlfriend of Steel and the Re-Take manga exist? If this was truly the message he wanted to convey, then why does his actions contradict this?
It’s just confusing. I want to believe your interpretation and I believe it advances the message and value of Evangelion but there’s so much stacking against it.

Granted, the show is interesting and subtle but maintain a flow of an entertainment plot, but I think most of the videos about it focuses on the mind part of the show, but I truly think Anno's intention is much more of an emotional one. His work don't communicate his ideas, rather his emotions. That's why, ultimately, I think discussion about philosophy when it comes to Evangelion is essentially side-tracking. I think it evokes such emotion that people can't help but express it, trying to understand what evokes them. I think it's a show that doesn't need that much investigation.
In term of movies, I think a comparison to something such as Twin Peaks and The Matrix comes to mind. Twin Peaks has a lot of ideas about the spirit, but it is expressed emotionally. Meanwhile, The Matrix approach is much more intellectually. Characters don't express emotion, they express ideas. Evangelion is very emotional, so it doesn't need to be dissected, it just need to be discussed.

Mari's interpretation as his girlfriend is a bit of a sketch. Mari is the same age his parents, and in the world without Eva, she shows no sign of ageing despite Shinji ageing normally. This part is pure meta, and as you have interpreted, Mari's lack of characterisation and more importantly, her lack of connection with Shinji, which is actually Anno, symbolises the world outside of Evangelion. She and Shinji are all on one side of track, going to a different direction to the rest of the cast on the other side. He no longer wants to have anything to do with the series, feeling drained and exhausted by his greatest success. She's not meant to represent Shinji's final fulfilment of a relationship, but Anno's fulfilment of escaping the hell that is Evangelion, to him. Mari was a problematic character that the creators admitted to have trouble finding a place, being created primarily to sell merchandise. Her role in the story, in the end was enclosed into that, because that's the only place where she fits. I think, Anno being Anno, if he truly sees her as a love interest role for Shinji, she would have gotten the proper treatment, characterised, backstory explored, and properly showing her ageing and affectionate with Shinji, like Kaworu. I don't think Anno likes the idea of having Shinji alone on a train going away from Evangelion, having Mari is perfect for that, since she don't fit in the story, yet encapsulate a very important concept for him, emotionally. Many people interprets her a representation of his wife. I think that only applies for the ending only. He didn't suggest anything of the sort.

I completely agree with you. Mari is implied to work for a third party and it's not even disclosed. She is a character created not from Anno's own idea but the producer Ootsuki's request, and Anno had to make her fit into a role that he even had to replace some of the original characters' relationships for her to finally have a place lol. In my opinion she feels just like a vague addition despite her role as one of the female lead characters... I'm really sorry Maki fans.

Similar to what Gigguk said in his video, the majority of people will probably enjoy the series, but the only way to truly appreciate and understand Evangelion, is to have gone through that mindset. It's not simply something you can empathize with. You would have needed to have been in that dark place in order to actually appreciate the themes and message.

Not really. I think what's beautiful about the show is that it's multifaced. The show works on all levels. There's the intellectual levels with conspiracy, plots, background details and discussion about people's interaction. Then, those are supplemented by terrific, ahead of its time animation quality, something often not mentioned by the fans. Intersect those 2 are the characters, who were written according to Anno's, as representation of himself, different parts of them. They embodies Anno as a thinker, Anno as an animator and Anno as a person. Of course, because it went off the rail in the middle, the person part came to the forefront and became the face of the fandom. All of that works, and were appreciated, not just the emotional part. That's why Evangelion is great, because it is really a work of passion. Every aspects of it are expression of its creator, not merely a vehicle to sell toys.

I felt bad for him because I knew how it felt. Thankfully now that I´m older I know that there are ways to get out of that horrible place, because I did got out, and I´m very glad that HIdeaki Anno also got out of that place and is encouraging people to do the same. I´m not special in any way, I´m just a simple guy and if I did get out of there, then there´s no reason why anybody can´t.

My first take on Thrice Upon a Time was that it reminded me a lot of the Buddhist idea of reincarnation. Basically that life is doomed to a cycle of reincarnation until the individual realizes their "Self" and that it typically takes many lifetimes for them to do it and move beyond the cycle to a state of Nirvana. Basically that the Eva pilots were doomed to reincarnate again and again until they had their epiphanies, stuck in their cycle of aging to 14 and starting again. We see Gendo open up and he's able to join Yui in death, we see Shinji confront his mistakes, open himself up and act with conviction and he's able to move on and grow up. Rei is a little more complicated but time after time she's gotten closer and closer to being a true individual person, in EoE by disobeying Gendo to try to please Shinji and in 1.0 and 2.0 taking more initiative to bring Shinji and Gendo together and standing up to Asuka, ultimately in Thrice Upon a Time saying farewell to Shinji and choosing to live her own life, so we see an older Rei at the train station with Shinji and Mari in the end next to Kowaru, who comes to the realization that everytime he was being selfish as he always wanted Shinji's happiness to make him happy. As for Asuka...we don't see her, because when last we see her she's still struggling in her same loop of struggling with a desire for affection and recognition. Perhaps her soul still has a way to go.

    • @frankjaeger2565
      @frankjaeger2565 2 роки тому +3

It's a nice theory, but it's ultimately wrong. This last movie has disproved the loop theory, as it shows that the world and characters of the Rebuild are just not the same as those from the original series. The fact that Shikinami is a clone means that she's not the same person Soryu was, she's a totally different character. Also, Kaworu never talks about the whole world and characters of Eva being stuck in a loop, he only says that he himself is stuck in a cycle of death and resurrection, and that happens within the Rebuild timeline. As Shinji and Rei say in their last conversation in this movie, time cannot be rewinded, it can only move forward. There is no loop.

It's pretty much obvious that Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (2021) is Hideaki Anno’s Swan Song for the Neon Genesis Evangelion Franchise. A farewell to his work that he created 26 years ago.
After watching it two times now I think it is a very good movie and a satisfying conclusion for the Neon Genesis Evangelion Franchise (at least for now).
Considering the fact that I was very skeptical about it because I didn't like the previous movie Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo and my worst fears were that Evangelion 3.0+1.0 will end up like How I met your Mother Season 9, Game of Thrones Season 8 or Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (all of those things are a complete trainwreck imo), I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't that.
Is Evangelion 3.0+1.0 perfect? Hell no.
Will it satisfy everyone? Of course not. That's impossible. You can't please everyone.
    I for my part was satisfied. I give Evangelion 3.0+1.0 a 8/10.
The only problems I have with this movie were some unnecessary fan service scenes, a few 3D CGI fight scenes that looked a bit jerky at times and the new backstory from Asuka Langley. I don't know but I found this new backstory a little weird and unnecessarily complicated. Yes, I know that Shikinami isn't the same character as Soryu but I still think that you could have used the same backstory that Soryu already had in the Original Series. Or if you really want to create a new one, use something that is less complicated. I think Asuka Langley Shikinami in general deserved more screentime in the movie but that's my personal point of criticism now.
    All I've to say is:
    *Sayounara, Evangelion.*

  • @hawkeyenextgen7117

Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide.
Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive.
Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day.
Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping they’d understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over two years now.
I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters.
There’s a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain.
I want to prove to myself I’m not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified.
But the fact I’m the only one I know in existence who’s been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy.
But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.
But if things hadn’t turned out that way, I wouldn’t be here today.

Can't help but wonder what the original plan for these movies were. Movies 3 and 4 were completely different from what the "next episode previews" showed. I get why Mari is endgame, because being the spunky outgoing type is best for pulling Shinji out of his shell, but doesn't that also mean it's saying that broken people can't improve each other?

    • @petrfedor1851

I personaly thing Shinji + Mari Is metacomentary on 26 years old discourse Asuka vs Rei.

    • @weberman173
      @weberman173 8 місяців тому

      2 years late but
its less "broken people cant improve each other" its more that basicaly any relationship with any of the characters we knew beforehand wold likely end up being codependend.
HECK Rei sacrificing herself to allow Shinji to "run away"(not having to pilot the eva) is a textbook definition of codependend relationships(well. not the "use a nuke to blow yourself up part" but the "self sacrifice to enable your partners self destructive behaviour" part, because shinji running away(not necesserly from the evas) is self destructive in its nature, its avoiding the problem not confronting it.).
Rei, Asuka and Shinji, while being in a meta sense all being part of Anno in some way, are also inherently incompatabile beings if portrayed as individual characters. It also has the theme that you need to move past what you know, all of this hurt you, you can not continue to cling to it just because its a Connection for you.
Mari is not just "spunky outgoing" she is "the unknown" a existance that didnt exist before, something shinji never interacted with in
any incarnation of this god forsaken cycle. Meta narativly she obviously also represents Annos wife who helped him out of his depression.
Broken people can help each other. Its just THESE broken people cant help each other, the way they are broken enables each others worst traits in a codependency spiral.

My biggest gripe with all this is like you said about Gendo “just needing a therapy session..”
-Shinji turns into a competent adult overnight with no character development to be seen by us.
-Gendo abandons his decades long plan without ever showing any signs of doubt or uncertainty up to this point. Plus he is rewarded this time, as opposed to EoE.
-Asuka seems to be “with” Kensuke and they explain/show NONE of that development?!
-Misato changes her mind about Shinji and everything from 3.0, but we see VERY little of how or why, etc.
This series just tells us “people are different now, isn’t that great?” which feels like a betrayal after the first series focused so much on Freud/therapy/psychoanalysis.

The world in the Rebuilds seems more optimistic from the get go. All the emotional and interpersonal problems of the characters are diminished or just absent. There’s no Rei monologue, no ambiguous kiss with Asuka, and her attraction to Kaji is gone. Misato was just done absolutely dirty, and even the struggles of minor characters like Ritsuko’s affair and the NERV crew’s questioning on the morality of their actions is gone.
Instead, we have Rei and Asuka cooking for Shinji, the same two making up in the elevator, and everyone seems to get along fine. Instead of sad, rainy, and lonely subway rides and sitting alone in a movie theatre, we have Shinji walking through Tokyo 3 to meet up with Toji and Kensuke to upbeat music. It’s the same in 3+1, Rei, Asuka, and Shinji, who are all outcasts in their own way, are readily accepted by the village, no questions asked. It’s not really explained how the villagers live amongst themselves in peace, or how they are happy, the people are happy just because. It really seems that the emotional and interpersonal problems of the characters would have resolved themselves if it weren’t for the existence of Eva and Angels. I suppose Rebuilds were made to appeal to a wider audience and make money, and by cutting out the grit of the original, well, they did just that.

    • @charliekowittmusic
      @charliekowittmusic 2 роки тому +2

@@homurameguca Yeah, well said. There are multiple interviews with Anno’s colleagues discussing how Anno has become primarily focused on what is marketable to the most people.
While I wouldn’t say that on its own makes this story “worse,” I think maybe Anno is more suited to the confessional, brutally honest writing of NGE/EoE.
In this world where The Avengers series grosses the highest at the box office, maybe Anno was right to focus on the animation and the fighting.
I will give him that: With the exception of the Gendo fight, F.I. Face/mannequins, the action scenes are GORGEOUS.
      Truly top notch animation.
I’ll just always prefer the character-focused writing of the original series/EoE. And I will mourn what the Rebuilds could have been.

You know, I didn't get this thesis of having faith from the text of the movie. It didn't have to be as in your face as something like Gundam Unicorn's "god of possibility" but there was never a moment where faith as even an idea entered the discussion. While Eva has subtext, I have to wonder where the through line to faith comes from.
For me honestly, the theme of the movies was to become a more responsible citizen, to the point where he chose to create a real world to grow up and be an adult in.

    • @petardraganov3716

They don't use the word "faith" but it seems obvious that Shinji's beliefs about himself and society change. When at the end he says that he isn't afraid of suffering and that Mari will come for him, both of those are expressions of faith. One in his own strength to deal with suffering and carry responsibility and the other is faith in Mari's love for him.

    • @linkkenni
      @linkkenni 2 роки тому +4

@@petardraganov3716 As obvious as it was to you, even Shinji's bond with Mari came from left field to me. There's a leap of faith, then there's a manic dream pixie girl waiting at the bottom of Inception's dreamscape to live out a life of mundane day to day reality.
Shinji's coping with his pain and becoming an adjusted person could have just as much come from Rei telling him that people actually like him as he is, bringer of the Near Third Impact, understanding that people did not have the contempt for him that he had for himself. Allowing other people to be kind to him allowed him to be kind to himself. We can bridge the gap to "faith" in others allowed him to have faith in himself, but this is subtext.
The more overt discussions of work, community, Mari's overenthusiastic embrace of her life and circumstances, and the lens of instrumentality being turned on Gendo, that Gendo and Shinji were of the same, were much more readable to me.

Anno tried to make art. People did not like it and focused on some crappy stuff.
It used to be a story about a kid with a charismatic but also narcissist and sociopathic parent, the kind that would throw his son in the metaphorical pool, but the parent in question did not give the kid a pool to swim into after throwing him in, nor he gave his son a company to run to see if he could run a company without teaching him how to run it. He gave his son a giant robot and watched him go berserk and told him "yeah, you will eventually learn" via the corporate equivalent of sending an employyee to pat your head.
They focused on why Toji disappeared when it was just the story of yet another friend a controlling father removed from the life of a child to create (in his sociopathic life), they focused on random stuff that only existed to show how bad the parenting was... becausenobody got the message.
Then he tried to retell the story since he had a bit more money... but he made sure people understood what was happening. Except they got it wrong. I mean... people literally put "rebirth" after "death". When they are evidently do be seen as "rebirth" *then* "death", like he was literally rebirthing evangelion to kill it. But he still gave us an "end".
Then... He literally pulled a "robocop 2" and made a meta movie about rewriting an ending knowing too well he will be killed for doing so (the eva 02 fight) because there was no way the fans would be happy about it and made a metaphor about the unsound mental m********ion that his fans were doing. (the shinji m********ion scene)
He literally interspersed movies with the real life death threats he received and the assaults he sustained. For telling a story close to his heart.
He showed us letters of people misunderstanding the movies yet again but gave him the mental violence of telling him they felt close to him when it was literally his way of distancing himself from them.
Bust still fans were not satisfied, they focused on a ton of stuff that was never part of the original narrative, so he made a movie that was a literal "f**k you all".
The he tried to end it once and for all. (i mean, you can't get more angry than titling something "true death squared") because he was sick and tired but no... people wanted more.
Then he said "you know what? i'm done. It never worked, here is my last rewrite. With this i have reached nirvana and i officially do not care anymore, the original is so dead and mangled and unrecognizable i am now officially out of this"
This last movie is essentially a resignation letter: "So long, thanks for all the fish i am now in an happier place, i will not tell you all to die because... to be fair i do not like getting assaulted and i wish to be done with this. Do i wish i could have told the original story better? Yeah, but funding and all... also people focusing on the metaphors as facts instead of metaphors and wanting to know more about the narrative artifacts i used to tell a story rather than focusing on wanting to know more about the story. The original story was about a sad kid that got mangled in the machinations of his father, everything else... was just fluff an metaphors. As a result of that i got my life mangled by a ton of "adoring fans" who literally made it impossible for me to write what i originally wanted to write, inexperienced and without funding as i was. Sooo yeah. Have the ending you always wanted, this is what would happen if Shinji had not been so f***ed up by life, It's not the story i wanted to write for sure, but it's the story you wanted. Have your happy unearned ending, have your niceties and everything else. Also: here is a waifu. You love waifus, right? Totally unearned, like your 2d waifus you love so much. So long!"
Obviously this is just my headcanon... but it kind of fits what i saw too well to not be at least part what i saw happening.

It's interesting that analyses on Rebuild tend to overlook that Shinji (and much of the cast) actually did progress in their development during the 2nd film, but were stunted by [mostly] unforseen circumstances. Shinji even finally behaved VERY decisively at the end of that film, inadvertently causing the 3rd Impact. It's always seemed to me as if that point in the series was showing how, even if we develop healthily as people, shit still happens and life doesn't permit any guarantees for anyone. Yes, the films ended eventually on a positive note, but the characters had been on the verge of resolving their issues years earlier. Perhaps the point is that they had to, yet again, reconcile with themselves and each other after almost doing so (and almost destroying the planet) to now truly transcend their demons. Idk
