The Dreamcast era and Dark ages were the prime times for the villains, especially the latter. The reason why the Dark ages has its name is because it focused on the villains' motives to inflict fates worse than death: rewriting stories and history, using mankind as a energy source for intense purposes, conquering time and space, and even trying to create a world without death.
Really? I thought it was because the games that came out during that time are some of the worst games in the whole series... or so claim the people making the games in the actual worst (and still on-going) chapter in the series' history.
Black Doom is genuinely a worthwhile addition to Shadow's backstory Not because of his relation to Shadow, but because of his relation to Gerald With Doom in the picture, suddenly the Eclipse cannon and the GUN massacre make a lot more sense, and it paints a strong picture of just how desperate Gerald was to finish Project Shadow
Not only that, it shows how far Gerald had gone after GUN killed Maria. Think about it: if the events of SA2 hadn't happened, during the Black Arms' invasion the government would prepare to use the Eclipse Cannon as planned, only to be greeted with Gerald's message and the colony falling on the Earth. _Not only did Gerald knew that the cannon would be used someday , he could wipe both species at once for what they caused to him_ . Shadow's game made have had issues, but I will always stand by the idea that it retro-actively made the finale of SA2 even better.
@@MegaGlassguy yeah I agree, the story made the game very fun actually. I think most fans played it more fore the story then gameplay. Same for Sonic Battle,
I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: Sonic needs more charismatic and interesting villains. If they want to keep Eggman for the main series, maybe have a spinoff series like what Mario&Luigi did for Mario where there’s a new awesome baddie to go up against in every game. This is honestly one of the easiest ways to make a new game feel fresh and interesting.
I can bet you a lot of money that Square Enix or sony interactive entertainment can make better stories for newer sonic games than whatever stupid shit we got in the shitty decade.
@@calebproductions1264 Heck, even the romhackers of the Sonic fanbase can make a better Sonic game than the bad games SEGA's been shoving out lately. There is word the reason we haven't had a new Sonic game in awhile is because SEGA and Sonic Team are aware of their bad game streak, so they are taking extra time to ensure the next Sonic game is good. Shoving out a game early before it was ready for release due to a not late enough deadline for release is why we got the glitchy mess Sonic 06.
Sonic honestly deserves a darker anime than Sonic X that includes more stories related to the game where some of their villains like Mephiles and Infinite can get more development
In regards to Black Doom, I think you should have mentioned what is probably the most infamous yet also most underrated part of the game: The Doom. He literally forced Shadow to relive the memories of the day G.U.N. killed everyone on the ARK, all in order to fuel his anger against humanity once more if you go down the dark path. But on the other hand, the hero path will have Shadow latching more onto his memories of Maria on that day and what he promised her, reinforcing his dedication to protecting humanity. Terrible level design but amazing story concept.
Also that whole part of how he was part of the reason why Gerald created him in the first place was sort of like a deal with the devil, if you think about it.
"Terrible level design but amazing story concept" is something of a theme with that game. It's actually a shame, cause Black Doom and the lore from that game are actually good, just mired in junk.
@@Umbra_Ursus Agreed. If anything, I definitely consider that those additions to the lore retro-actively make the finale of SA2 even better. Unfortunately the way Shadow's game itself handles its own events leaves much to be desired.
Mephiles he already won but it just of playing around messing up people around for he entertainment. He just kill sonic just easy and done. Only thing to stop he is locking he up of the seal he is the end game.
Mephiles is still my favorite villain in the series. He’s the only Sonic villain that actually scares me, his eyes are so soulpiercing and his themes in Sonic 06 especially phase 2 give me chills.
Both Metal and Mephiles deserve to come back properly. The former hasn't been given much to work with since heroes and the latter makes Eggman and Dark Gaia look tame by comparison Mephiles is sadistic and manipulative and despite not being very powerfull, the fact that he's literally immortal makes him feel like an unbeatable evil that can only be contained, never truly destroyed. It also helps that he is SHADOW'S villain instead of Sonic's,which is refreshing
Let's assume the Metal Sonic after Heroes is the same one and not a new build. Eggman would have clearly reprogrammed him so Metal Sonic can never cause a large scale robot rebellion ever again. They would have to come up with a VERY plausible reason as to how Metal Sonic was able to break past Eggman's programming once more. Currently, the best they would be able to do is have Metal Sonic be a notably more predominate thorn in Sonic's side.
I always figured Mephiles simply can't fuse with future Iblis, since Iblis was released when Elise died, not when she cried, meaning the seal itself was never truly broken. Would explain why he killed Sonic instead of Elise, too. Also I imagine Eggman doesn't buy all his ships and shit, just steals stuff and has his robots and prisoners slave away.
I think the same. Compare Iblis in the boss fights to Iblis when he is properly released. I think the death of Elise may have corrupted Iblis, making him incompatible with Mephiles due to the way he was released plus the 2 centuries since said release, as Iblis seems to have gained some level of cognitive thought, though it is limited.
I'd say it's because he loves to torture them he gets a naive silver to kills sonic to make Elise cry He doesn't really care about revenge he just wants to torture shadow
Merlina is my favorite villain cause she actually had a motivation that is pretty relatable in the real world when you think about it. She has a fear of the end which everyone in the world has and wants it to last forever but then at the end she learns that even tho the end is inevitable we can still make the most of our lives by living it to the fullest Also Her Theme Song is THE BEST SONIC SONG THE WHOLE FRANCHISE YES EVEN BETTER THAN LIVE AND LEARN
Yeah! That's a great song! Man, the true final battle theme songs of the Storybook Series and to an extent, the true final battle themes of the older 3D Sonic games were so good! It's a shame the Storybook series suffered from motion controls on the Wii before the Wii Motion Plus came out...
My personal take of why Mephiles doesn't fuse with Iblis from the get-go, is because for some reason in the future Iblis is too corporeal. Mephiles needs to fuse with him while it's still a bodyless mass of flames. Of course, wanting to have revenge on Shadow and cause chaos and discord around him before doing it is a valid reason too.
If I were to rewrite Sonic’s story to make it much better, I’d have it that Mephiles is responsible for the Egg Carrier’s malfunction and orchestrate the whole thing with Silver and Shadow is make parts of his scheme come into being including Silver sending Sonic back in time to rescue Elise which in effect generates a time paradox by her surviving the accident that in turn allows Mephiles to join with Iblis in the present because they’re both in temporal sync at the same point or whatever. Given that Solaris’ existence is a threat to time and space, Mephiles inducing a paradox would go a long way to make 2006’s time travel make more sense as him screwing with time and the heroes unknowingly falling into his hands. Only defeated at the end because they lived through the destruction of the space-time continuum to take him down.
@@playerback7722 Ironically, it was Sega of Japan mainly responsible for what happened to Tail in Forces. Heck, Unleashed also made him into a coward a well. The issue with the series writing involves more than just Pontac and Graff. Especially since the writing quality and consistency of the characters began to develop cracks even before 2010. Like show Sega didn't know what to do with Shadow after Sonic 06 or how Knuckles increasingly become more of a hot head starting with SHTH. While giving the boot to Pontac and Graff would be a god place to start, it wouldn't magically fix everything. Especially as long as Sega of Japan continues to mes up.
@@tidepoolclipper8657 at least the titan required the energy from a leviathan being, combined with a super-powered mutant protagonist to be defeated; after what would usually be a challenging and near-death fight for the player's first run. tails would understandably be helpless. ...chaos 0 though? not being able to just escape the deadly six's clutches? ...yeah. i think we can all agree: fuck pontaff.
I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion. But I like Infinite. He has a spectacular design. And they managed to find a way to give a villain an insane level of power without making him straight up unbeatable. It's not outside the realm of possibility to defeat him..... Might have made him more threatening if we didn't get to defeat him three times. But still. People compare him to Mephiles a lot, but Infinite isn't Mephiles. He's not some immortal, all-powerful being. But he desperately wants you to think that he is. Everything from his name, to his mask, to his attitude, to even his theme song, you get the sense he's covering up some insecurity. Considering he called himself "The Ultimate Mercenary" he's clearly someone who takes a lot of pride in his impressive reputation and ability. The minute Shadow came onto the scene and showed he was hugely outmatched, he needed an edge to become better and make others fear him again. So it makes sense he'd stay by Eggman's side so willingly. Because if he doesn't comply, the doctor just cuts off his power. Infinite was just really let down by his debut game. Sonic Forces wasn't a bad game. It was just really underwhelming. It felt like they were building to something with Infinite.... And then he literally just disappears and is never brought up again. Since the IDW comics are a direct follow-up to the events of Sonic Forces, I really hope they find a way to use Infinite in a future storyline. The possibilities are.... well, you get the idea.
Eggman will always be the best villain for the series. Not only having that sense of creativity with his machines, only replicated by one other villain; Eggman Nega, but also being able to effectively switch between being hilarious and downright threating with the correct writers. Not far in second, place, though is Mephiles the Dark. One of the few good things about Sonic 06's story.
My opinion: Merlina is by far was the best Sonic villain for me, her motivations were so good that Sonic himself was willing to call himself the villain of the story despite still being the one doing the right thing and she was a perfect foil for him in a game that truly did Sonic's personality justice Followed by Metal Sonic because of both his incarnations in the OVA and Heroes being fantastic despite being different continuities, plus SMBZ and STS while being noncanon material did influence my choice as well for how memorable they were Then Gerald(and to some extension Shadow) in Adventure 2 during the arguably best storyline of the entire franchise, such a poor and compassionate human being twisted into a monster by grief of losing the little girl he wanted to save and the worst of humanity getting through him These are my top 3 Things get messy after that There's Chaos the god blinded by fury seeking to avenge the innocent, Emerl the baby android who grew into a person only to be forced into becoming a weapon once again by his programming, Mephiles the "satan" of Soleanna who killed Sonic and manipulated his way into becoming a god again I dont think Eggman comes even close to them despite being the driving force of most conflicts in the franchise HOWEVER if we take Archie Eggman into account...man, he's terrifying, I think he easily tops anyone easily with his psychological warfare and sheer brutally, althought Eggman from Sonic X is still more likeable for me And then of course there's Fleetway Super Sonic... not the best by far but easily one of my favorities by just how cool this little chaos demon is, his growth as a person was really nice too and made his ending much more tragic(kinda like Emerl)
Eggman in the early Sonic X episodes was funny, never knowing which robot of his to send-out, so he has a slot machine-like randomizer pick one for him.
For me there are three villains who deserve the title best sonic villain. Dr.eggman Mephiles the dark And Infinite Dr.eggman is a mad scientist, leader of the eggman empire and sonic's archenemy.his goals are to takeover the world and transforming it Into his ultimate utopia ,,EGGMAN LAND".what i like About this villain is that he is the cause of almost everything sonic and his friends are facing with.like freeing mystical creatures like chaos, dark gaia and mephiles (well mephiles was actually accidently freed from a fight between eggman and shadow)or created Life forms (like shadow),kidnapped animals(like always),alien races(sonic colors) and sonic friends (sonic generations) and brought new villains in the Series like time eater, the deadly six and infinite.he is the eggman.he got the masterplan. Mephiles the dark is the half of the Sun god solaris and a manipulator and trickster who only grave destruction.he has no morality and Effects all 3 storylines.in silvers story he manipulated silver to go back in time to kill sonic,in shadow's Story he wanted to Tricks shadow to joining him and in sonic story he killed sonic himself.he is the only villain who actually killed sonic. Infinite is the bearer of the phantom ruby and a former mercenary.he helped the eggman Empire takeover 99% of the world After he defeated sonic.he destroyed cities, killed millions and tortured sonic for 6 months.he only wants to destroy everything, make people suffer and take their hopes.and all of that because he only got bored with the world like it is.yeah this Guy is a arrogant, sadistic and cruel psychopath who only wants to See the world burn.he is like the new mephiles and i Love this character.I hope he return in a Future sonic game.hopefully as the main antagonist this time.
Facts, his reasoning for being a villain is so stupid imo. He had amazing abilities and could be used better in ways beyond what he was originally used for
@@AyoSteven.Official Literally, lol. Infinite's reasons for being evil boils down to "this world is boring so I must destroy it" and "Shadow called me worthless, implying that I'm a weakling but I am NOT WEAK, RRAAAHH". Like... what? In the game, they tell us that Shadow completely annihilated his whole team. Everybody in the "Jackal Squad" except Infinite was killed by Shadow after they were ordered by Eggman to guard the facility in Mystic Jungle on the day that Shadow arrived to destroy the facility. It was also revealed in a comic that the reason why the Jackal Squad ever met Eggman in the first place was because they once attacked Eggman's Base in attempt to raid it and fetch a bounty for all the high tech that was in it - but they were quickly overwhelmed by his robots. Then, Infinite was offered to become the leader of the Eggman Army once Eggman saw his "true nature" after coming into contact with the Phantom Ruby. The rest of the Jackal Squad were against this alliance, but Infinite accepted his random offer anyway. He doesn't seem pissed at Shadow for killing his entire squad... in fact, he never even mentions them or even implies that he wants revenge for killing them after he fused with the Phantom Ruby. It was Shadow calling him weak that set him off and he doesn't even try to find and fight Shadow after that happened. He doesn't seem to have any anger towards Eggman either for using his squad of mercenaries and thieves as a line of defense for his facility and letting them get killed off in the first place - nor is he angry at him for constantly failing to kill the resistance. Hell, Infinite himself for some reason kept letting the good guys live and win in the end for no good reason. The only reasoning we get from him for that is the cringy "they're not even worth the effort to finish off" attitude. I just... don't understand. What the hell were they thinking?

You know what's sad? Everybody hates Sonic 06 even though it had the best Sonic Villan, great character for Team Dark, introduced the underrated Silver, and even Sonic's story wasn't all bad (the only problems being Tails and Knuckle's character and Sonic dating a human.) Other than that, the only real problem with the game is the gameplay, and even then, if Sega just gave themselves more time to work on it, the gameplay wouldn't be glitchy and this would have probably been the best Sonic game (and we would also probably have more Adventure style games).
Kinda reminds me of the Legacy of Kain series. Amazing stories kinda ruined by subpar gameplay (though I'd say that both in story and gameplay all LoK games are better than 06)
FINALLY someone understands it that's why Sonic 06 is one of my favourite Sonic Games they could just remake the game make a better Story for Sonic and BAM we have an adventure three Sorry for bad english
I think the only people who still "hate" the game even to this day are passionate Sonic detractors, and their parroting followers who didn't actually play the game at all. I mean, if 06 is so, so hated then why so many people still love characters like Silver and Mephiles so much? Out of all the "worst" games in the series, it seems like fans defend this game way more often than they do, say, Shadow the Hedgehog, or pretty much any of the main/3D games from the Meta era (if ever). For me the real tragedy of Sonic 06 is that Sega took all the wrong lessons from this game's failure that ended up affecting all future games in the following years, when they just needed to take only one, simple lesson out of this; DON'T FUCKING RUSH YOUR SONIC GAMES SO FUCKING MUCH, NOT EVEN MAKING IT FOR THE ANNIVERSARY DATE IS WORTH IT!!! It baffles me that Rise of Lyric had to happend even after this, they really are clueless. Also maybe you already know of this, but check out Project 06, a fan remake of the game that while still in development already has some playable demos and looks amazing!
I think Tails and Knuckles were fine in this game. despite the story having little to do with them, they were useful as much as they could and had reliable personalities.
This was a fantastic list, I was so happy and actually surprised to see Mephiles at number one I couldn't agree more, and Metal Sonic is also very high in my list, the only thing I'd change is putting Dark Gaia higher, but that's your opinion and that's all good 👍
My personal villains list. 10: Zavok 9: Erazor Dijn 8: Black Doom 7: Infinite 6: Dark Gaia 5: Merlina 6: Egg Man Nega 5: Dr. Gerald Robotnik 4: Chaos 3: Egg Man 2: Mephiles the Dark 1: Metal Sonic
I must admit your videos have given me a new found appreciation for Mephiles as a character, particularly how he works with Shadow and Silver, and to some extent Omega. However I wouldn't say he's the best Sonic villain, honestly I think a lot of the villains in the Archie Sonic Comic series deserve recognition, particularly Scourge and Ixis Naugus, both of whom are extremely threatening in their power and how they collide with the ideals and morals of the heroes. I also think Metal Sonic is amazingly written in the Archie comics, his emotionless state turned in to a much more tragic story element with how he interacts with Shadow who tries to save him from being used by the doctor like how he was, but Metal's calculating and one track mind prevents him from being appealed to by such mercy, the same happening between Metal and Shard (a reformed Mecha Sonic) where Shard tries to show Metal the new sense of life he had found but again Metal refuses, his programming not allowing him to listen to such ideals, it makes Metal much more threatening seeing how he carefully assesses every situation he is in and makes him more sympathetic to see how tragic his futile existence really is.
Well, those villains ARE great in their own rights, but we're focusing on the games here. Perhaps they would have appeared if the video was centered around ALL Sonic media, but in this case, they can't appear simply because they don't exist in the game canon.
Am I the only one who thought it would be satisfiying if after you dealt the finishing blow to Devil Doom, Shadow says "Goodbye...'father' " or "Sayonara you fake of a father!" Idk thats just me
Shadow isn’t that emotional of a character. Hell he’s never even called Maria or Gerald family even tho they were clearly the closest people to him in his life previously or Rouge and Omega who are the closest to him now. Shadow calling him father even if it is mockingly would just be bad characterization and sounds like bad fan fiction
In a plot rewrite of 06, it was changed so that mephiles was the mind of Solaris and Iblis was the power. And that contributes to why I think he's a great sonic villain: he's an active player in the plot. Not only does it explain why he's weak comparatively, but he repeatedly interacts with the characters and story. He manipulates Silver, emotionally wrecks Elise, and tries to turn Shadow evil. It also makes the plot seem more urgent, with his repeated appearences. Infinite and Eggman only occasionally appear in forces, and the three day doom (remember that?) doesn't feel dire at all
Even though he's the mind he's stillbcraxy ok way stronger then sonic or shadow that's why he's awesome also he made erman leave when his seal was broken
I am amazed that Sonic 06 was your introduction to Sonic and (if I'm reading this right) you stayed a Sonic fan after that. Sonic Adventure DX was my second game and yet it's still my most favorite Sonic game though so what am I saying.
Sonic 06 is terrible, but the glitches in that game are so funny to watch! lol And also the funny part where Crisis City gives you first level-styled tutorial messages, even though it's not the first level!
Gerald is the most tragic character because he was a kind heroic scientist who only became a villain after he lost everyone on the arc except shadow and Abe about and went insane from it
Incredible video, also you chose the best music for this Fun Fact: Chaos isn't actually dead, only Tikal is, Chaos is a local on Angel Island Anyways,, oh my god, Sonic had such great characters back then
@@zigazav1 That mode is non-canon. Even then, Tikal has not shown up story wise for a long time. As for Chaos; the one in Forces was jut an impostor. Though the real deal could come back some day; since unlike Tikal, he is still more than just a spirit.
My top 10 of favourite villains 10: infinite 9: zavok 8: scourge the hedgehog 7: eggman/robotnik 6: mephiles 5: super sonic fleetway 4: chaos 3: metal sonic 2: gerald robotnik 1: sonic fanbase
If they were to make a Sonic Heroes 2, I can’t think of a better villain than Mephiles. Think of it, more teams (including Silver with Blaze and Marine and Robotnik with Sage and Metal), the reason for Silver’s team to be there would be Mephiles. It would be awesome
It's disappointing to see that Infinite is not well liked as a villain. I really liked his story, but I do believe it needs work. I hope I'm not in the minority that wants to see him return.
I would REALLY want him to comeback because he had sooo much potential! But SEGA fucked him over... They made him weak, a joke, and just a waste of a really good villain... and that's super sad to think about
My Top 10 #1: Mephiles the Dark #2: Infinite #3: Dr Eggman #4: Zavok #5: Shadow the Hedgehog #6: Metal Sonic #7: Biolizard #8: Erazor Djinn #9: Lyric the Last Ancient #10: Black Doom
Metal Sonic: 12:54 Me: *Laughs to hard to where I can't breathe* Metal Sonic: OH MY GAIA!! RAYVEN PLEASE STOP!! Me: Oh gaia that was funny Metal Sonic: I bet it was for you Me: You've never failed to make me laugh Metal Sonic: Yea, and I hope I never do
True but even back then I remember people making edgy music videos and fan art of the guy. I guess he was the one thing people liked about 06 even back then
The whole time i was watching the video, I kept hoping Mephiles was going to be on the list bc he truly is the absolute best and I was so happy to see him at number 1
Dude this list is pretty epic! And you’re right, Mephiles has to be the best sonic villain. Not only for the reasons you’ve stated but also just because he’s had so many interactions with different characters in different ways and he just doesn’t care what happens as long as he reaches his goal (which he did) and it’s very entertaining! Mephiles is very well written (for 06 anyway) and they did well getting dan green to voice him, imagine Liam o Brian voicing him :0 That’s infinite’s voice actor for reference (he’s had other character voices I’m not praising infinite)
Great list and ranking, and as always the analyzations of the characters and story and lore is spot on, but I think Chaos was a bit high. He's definitely top 5 but I wouldn't put him above Eggman or Metal. I also think Emerl/Gemerl should've gotten a shoutout, because he was a well-made character/villain and became reformed, like Shadow and Merlina
Agreed, Emerl was a great tragic foe, and more of a victim of their society with how he starts out almost child-like and innocent, but the acts of all the individual characters shape him into becoming a foe. Then Dark Brotherhood when we learn about the Nocturnus Clan and what his line of robots were meant to do made him more interesting if you ask me, even though he doesn't technically appear in that game.
I don't care that the Dark Gaia boss fight has problems, it's spectacular and I love it (and is actually a huge factor as to why Unleashed is my second favorite Sonic game after SA2). Personally, I can't take Erazor's voice seriously. Pachacamac is a monster! Just imagine the echidna warriors trampling Tikal and the chao in a remake. Black Doom is awesome. I love doing his voice. Gerald is significant. His descent into madness is intense. Merlina is one of the few villains whose motivation I can understand, and when Sonic gets knocked down multiple times but keeps getting back up, that is seriously one of my favorite moments in the series! Well, you can't have a top ten villains video without Eggman! He is without a doubt at his best in SA2. I freakin' love the Egg Dragoon battle in Unleashed; I love how Eggman actually beats Sonic in the opening with the Egg Dragoon but is defeated by the werehog later on; Eggman was not prepared for Sonic's newfound power! Metal Sonic is awesome, but I think I prefer Mecha Sonic. I just can't get over how cool his Knuckles boss fight is in 3&K (which is actually a good example of the series having anime cheese in the classic era). Chaos is amazing. My first Sonic game was SA1, which made Chaos my first Sonic villain. His final boss has forever set a precedent for Sonic final bosses for me. Mephiles is just perfect. I think my favorite thing about him is how he provided a cool story for Shadow; it's easy to look at Shadow after SA2 and Shadow the Hedgehog and say "What else is he gonna do? His story is over" but I think they did a great job going further into Shadow's character (and all of team dark for that matter) through Mephiles (and he's just creepy as hell).
The Adventure and Dark era is where Sonic villains were at there best! They were so twisted and evil. The 2010+ Sonic villains are just trash and cringeworthy

16:10 I was so happy that Mephiles is on the list. Also can you do a video on Mephiles. (Plus the “Mephiles Phase 2” fight music is one of the greatest Boss music tracks in the sonic franchise)
I think infinite is the best sonic villain.he destroyed cities, killed millions and tortured the world Most famous hero.he supported eggman empire and helped them to rule 99% of the world after he defeated sonic.he relishes in the pain, suffering and fear of others and is perfectly content with killing other heroes just to instill even more hopelessness on everyone else. And all of that because he got bored with the world as it was. yeah this guy is a psychopath.against him every sonic villain looks like collerfull clowns (Except mephiles).
I said if Mephiles wasn't at the top of this list I would riot - you did not disappoint 😁 14 years after the game came out and he still sends shivers down my spine.
I realy liked inperorder IX, he was kind of badass being a ancient echidna king who wishes to take over sonics world after his tribe had been imprisoned and he tries to get knuckles to join his people, he was a fresh, cool villain
pretty good list, though I feel eggman nega deserves some respect, to me he is like eggman but without any human traits or comedic value with the evil amped up. he is even tragic too as everyone judged him all because he was related to eggman and then he got tired of it all. Plus he has commited some of the most hanus acts in the series such as turning tails, amy, rouge, and the master emerald into cards to mess with sonic, knuckles, and shadow, using the jewel secpter to destroy all of existance where even eggman thought that was going too far, and feeding chao to a fire monster just so it can destroy the earth. him being more polite in his mannerism and speeches than eggman and being alittle less narcissistic allows him to stand out more from his ancestor. but I believe him being a good antagonist to blaze and silver allows us to have a oppritunity to have silver and blaze team up in the rivals timeline and I wish he'd be used more instead of being stuck in the ifrit dimension (and probably dead).
Currently, the fanbase doesn't consider him all that interesting. Honestly, though, Eggman Nega has potential. He is a extremely bitter dude who has some right to despise Ivo Robotnik for damaging the legacy of his family. Not to mention his attempts to hide his bitterness and general craziness with false politeness. With the right writers, he would be considered far more memorable.
Facts, kinda wish Sonic Team would give Nega a chance to give Sonic & friends a real challenge but uuuhhh guess Sonic Team loves to suck up Badly McNose Face Jokes🤦♂️
I loved the plot of Sonic And The Black Knight. I don't understand the hate it got. The controls were fine, and so were the graphics. The game wasnt hard, but wasn't too easy either. It was a new type of gameplay style, that was quite decent. The plot was also awesome! Your companion being the ultimate villain, without even being a villain. Sonic even understood her plan, and her good intentions. Even quoting "I cant be the good guy in every story!" at the final boss. Even at the ending cutscene, sonic sympathized with her, and didn't taunt her like he does with most other villains. Merlina was a genuinely good sonic villain, and no one can change my mind. She is relatable, afraid of the future, and the end of what she knows and loves. She saw her world fall into war, and everything she knew crushed. If you saw the future, and saw everything you know and love fall to ashes, and you had a way to keep things the way they are, forever, wouldn't you?
Maria's grandfather was terrifying yet sad at the same time since he was betrayed by the military and government who wanted him to work only to destroy everything, kidnapped and made him work only to kill him off without remorse betrayed him again. Understandable why he became this way although doing his scheming was a bit crossing the line.
You know, though.... There's one MAJOR issue I have with Mephiles.... Why is it when he becomes Solaris, he suddenly loses ALL personality? His personality is what made him interesting. Then when he becomes a competed sun god. He's suddenly mute? He already had a high and mighty personality. Why not use that for his god form too? Go full JRPG with him. =V
I think Black Doom and Shadow the Hedgehog are actually more similar to Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader in many more ways than Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.

Ken Penders has to be the biggest Sonic villain because he's a real life person who ruined the Sonic Archie Comics by taking away many fan favorite characters like Julie-Su and Scourge due to his saltiness over being canned and replaced by Ian Flynn causing him to start his ridiculous copyright claims.
I know infinite is hated among the Sonic community and I will admit that I haven't played every Sonic game. For example I never played Sonic o-6 before or Sonic and the Black Knight, but I highly enjoyed Sonic forces although I know the game still could have been, it's not as bad as people say it is. With that said, I actually liked infinite as a villain. the power to make copies of a variety of strong characters and the power to manipulate time and space. yes he needed the phantom Ruby to do so, but still he was actually a force to be reckoned with. I just wish they utilized his clones more though. I mean the only one you ever battle against is Zavok and he's the least interesting. it would have been really cool if instead of that cut seen it actually have you go against Shadow as modern Sonic and then finish off this fake Shadow playing as the real Shadow. Play as Classic Sonic and go against a fake Metal Sonic and play as the custom character against the fake chaos and maybe even have this fake chaos change forms mid-battle which would confuse the characters because they remembered that chaos would need Chaos emeralds to do so. The story of Sonic forces has a lot of missed potential. But you can tell when going against Infinite himself that he's a threat. the boss music when you go against him is also awesome. And also his actual main theme kicks ass too! I also really liked that infinite was some kind of anthropomorphic animal instead of just some big monster like so many Sonic villains are.
The fanbase is divided, there is people who hates him and other people who loves him... (me xD)I hope that in the next game he'll have the character development he deserves.
awesome video just wondering your thoughts on the japanese scripts for sonic games. They featured better voice direction,a consistent tone,no out of placed dialogue, and better world building.,Colors Generations,Lost World,Forces and Team Sonic RACING are much better in this version. There is no forced humor and characters act like they should but all in all just more fully realized in general. honestly the way i see of mephiles not refusing with iblis is because he physically couldn't, he way forcably split and needed the chaos emeralds to reform. as for the path we saw him take, well he knew he had to free iblis to refuse but knowing how weak he was needed somebody powerful but gullable to do the dirty work, and every other moment he was being actively pursued by shadow as he hunted for the emeralds, and noting he managed to get the yellow, green and purple emeralds on his own and then using the emeralds power to get sonic into a killable position it pretty much worked, outside of being sealed inside a septor he pretty much only lived for a day before succeeding at his goal.

I like Infinite, but only because he's voiced by Liam O Brien and that theme song is cool to me. I think he was just an overly cocky douche, until Shadow's story showed up and Infinite is just a baby that wants revenge for being called weak.

It's sad that we don't get villains like these anymore. I feel kinda emotional in a way if SEGA didn't give in to hate and critics then they could have carried on making more monstrous villains like these. Comparing these to the villains we get now is such a downgrade besides I guess the time-eater looking pretty cool looking and Infinite designs is really cool too but sadly fails everything else. :/ Oh well its only more reasons to keep pushing further to make my own stories and creations, if the official stuff can't, might as well do it myself.

That thing reminds me of Nemesis Prime for some reason.
Funny how we got more games in the Dark age then currently
Really? I thought it was because the games that came out during that time are some of the worst games in the whole series... or so claim the people making the games in the actual worst (and still on-going) chapter in the series' history.

Black Doom is genuinely a worthwhile addition to Shadow's backstory
Not because of his relation to Shadow, but because of his relation to Gerald
With Doom in the picture, suddenly the Eclipse cannon and the GUN massacre make a lot more sense, and it paints a strong picture of just how desperate Gerald was to finish Project Shadow

Sega doesnt know that. Something so easy and ESPECIALLY effective would just fly over their head
Don't most mainline Sonic games have a secondary antagonist? Sega seems to be kind of trying.

Ehhhhhhhhhhh mephiles could be a lot better in my opinion
Mephiles the GOAT ong bro
Mephiles is still my favorite villain in the series. He’s the only Sonic villain that actually scares me, his eyes are so soulpiercing and his themes in Sonic 06 especially phase 2 give me chills.
100% agreed! He’s definitely my favorite Sonic villain ever! And the way he tries to trick Shadow is just so well written!
Both Metal and Mephiles deserve to come back properly.
The former hasn't been given much to work with since heroes and the latter makes Eggman and Dark Gaia look tame by comparison
Mephiles is sadistic and manipulative and despite not being very powerfull, the fact that he's literally immortal makes him feel like an unbeatable evil that can only be contained, never truly destroyed.
I mean, RINGS ARE THE CURRENCY IN THAT WORLD.
The problem is the game never explained that. It's still a massive plot hole.
I'd say it's because he loves to torture them he gets a naive silver to kills sonic to make Elise cry
He doesn't really care about revenge he just wants to torture shadow
Also, Sonic may be able to defeat Solaris is what he could think. (He did after all)
Merlina is my favorite villain cause she actually had a motivation that is pretty relatable in the real world when you think about it.
She has a fear of the end which everyone in the world has and wants it to last forever but then at the end she learns that even tho the end is inevitable we can still make the most of our lives by living it to the fullest
Also Her Theme Song is THE BEST SONIC SONG THE WHOLE FRANCHISE YES EVEN BETTER THAN LIVE AND LEARN
Yeah! That's a great song! Man, the true final battle theme songs of the Storybook Series and to an extent, the true final battle themes of the older 3D Sonic games were so good! It's a shame the Storybook series suffered from motion controls on the Wii before the Wii Motion Plus came out...
I love her theme but nothing can be the chorus from fist bump in sonic forces.

Me: *laughs in Sonic X Theme Song*
That scene in Sonic Adventure 2 when Gerald Robotnik said his last words still gives me chills..
I mean it's probably because he just loves to torture people he wants them to be broken mentally that's why

Ironically, it was Sega of Japan mainly responsible for what happened to Tail in Forces.
Especially as long as Sega of Japan continues to mes up.

i think we can all agree: fuck pontaff.
Why unpopular? I really like him

Plus there can only be one man to be the arch nemesis of Sonic The Hedgehog and that man is Ivo Robotnik aka The Evil Mastermind Dr. Eggman
Mephiles also had an epic evil laugh, both during his first boss fight and right after killing Sonic.
What bothers me is that Sonic's death by Mephiles was orchestrated pretty poorly in Sonic 06.
@@marsgo8938 Same tbh, if anything I prefer Sonic's death to be caused by Sonic sacrificing himself to protect Elise, acting like a shield of sorts
My opinion:
Merlina is by far was the best Sonic villain for me, her motivations were so good that Sonic himself was willing to call himself the villain of the story despite still being the one doing the right thing and she was a perfect foil for him in a game that truly did Sonic's personality justice
Followed by Metal Sonic because of both his incarnations in the OVA and Heroes being fantastic despite being different continuities, plus SMBZ and STS while being noncanon material did influence my choice as well for how memorable they were
Then Gerald(and to some extension Shadow) in Adventure 2 during the arguably best storyline of the entire franchise, such a poor and compassionate human being twisted into a monster by grief of losing the little girl he wanted to save and the worst of humanity getting through him
These are my top 3
Things get messy after that
There's Chaos the god blinded by fury seeking to avenge the innocent, Emerl the baby android who grew into a person only to be forced into becoming a weapon once again by his programming, Mephiles the "satan" of Soleanna who killed Sonic and manipulated his way into becoming a god again
I dont think Eggman comes even close to them despite being the driving force of most conflicts in the franchise
HOWEVER if we take Archie Eggman into account...man, he's terrifying, I think he easily tops anyone easily with his psychological warfare and sheer brutally, althought Eggman from Sonic X is still more likeable for me
And then of course there's Fleetway Super Sonic... not the best by far but easily one of my favorities by just how cool this little chaos demon is, his growth as a person was really nice too and made his ending much more tragic(kinda like Emerl)
Nah erazor djinn is the best

Infinite the number 1 most wasted villain ever.
Still more interesting than the Deadly Six
I wish they retconned Forces and gave us Infinite back, only with a better motivation, more personalities, and actual backstory on why he's evil.

FINALLY someone understands it that's why Sonic 06 is one of my favourite Sonic Games they could just remake the game make a better Story for Sonic and BAM we have an adventure three
Sorry for bad english

Cool
Metal Sonic in one of the Sonic Rivals games actually sacrifices his life to remove the Chaos Emerald within him so Sonic can do Super Transformation.
Am I the only one who thought it would be satisfiying if after you dealt the finishing blow to Devil Doom, Shadow says "Goodbye...'father' " or "Sayonara you fake of a father!"
Idk thats just me
Ooh, I kinda like that idea.
Infinite and Eggman only occasionally appear in forces, and the three day doom (remember that?) doesn't feel dire at all
That wasn't a change. In the game itself, Mephiles is the mind and Iblis the power.
I can tell you haven't played the game, because that isn't a plot rewrite. This is the actual story lmao.

Thank you for putting chaos so high up. It definitely deserves it.
Incredible video, also you chose the best music for this
Fun Fact: Chaos isn't actually dead, only Tikal is, Chaos is a local on Angel Island
Anyways,, oh my god, Sonic had such great characters back then
And yet they brought both Chaos and Tikal back for the multiplayer mode on SA2B

That mode is non-canon. Even then, Tikal has not shown up story wise for a long time. As for Chaos; the one in Forces was jut an impostor. Though the real deal could come back some day; since unlike Tikal, he is still more than just a spirit.

I want him to come back too
I would REALLY want him to comeback because he had sooo much potential! But SEGA fucked him over... They made him weak, a joke, and just a waste of a really good villain... and that's super sad to think about

Sonic fans in 2006: Mephiles sucks
Sonic fans now: Mephiles is the best Villain
True but even back then I remember people making edgy music videos and fan art of the guy. I guess he was the one thing people liked about 06 even back then
The whole time i was watching the video, I kept hoping Mephiles was going to be on the list bc he truly is the absolute best and I was so happy to see him at number 1
This is the very 1st video premiere I've watched the entire way through, ever.
I’d argue chaos isn’t evil just angry at something he’s been stewing over for 4000 years and manipulated by Eggman
Gerald was basically so desperate he made a deal with the devil
Metal Sonic & Chaos 0 are the best villians
Definitely.
Perfect Chaos is the most intimidating sonic villain.
That's a fire take on mephiles I gotta say. I love mephiles and sonic 06 unironically
The Adventure and Dark era is where Sonic villains were at there best! They were so twisted and evil. The 2010+ Sonic villains are just trash and cringeworthy

@@bahes3466 I gotta disagree. When compared to deeper more complex characters like Chaos, Gerald, and Neo, Infinite comes off as kinda a pansy.
@@chillihog1543 well said. blame it on pontaff.

"He moves like a reanimated corpse" So, a character in Sonic 06. Also, I'm gonna have to sue you for not putting Metal Sonic at number one
Even quoting
"I cant be the good guy in every story!" at the final boss.
Deadly six not on the list?
G O O D.
I love Metal's design, it's pretty awesome but I wished he had more going for him
You know, though....
I had that question too XD
I assume it's something to do with the diffusion splitting Solaris into two different entities.
Yeah, that's why HerotonVA's depiction of Solaris is my favorite, he still retains his personality
4:00 lol this sounded 100% like Heavy from TF2
I think Black Doom and Shadow the Hedgehog are actually more similar to Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader in many more ways than Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.
Ah yes, the best villain from the best game in the franchise sitting at first where he belongs!
HA!
My man here spittin' facts.
At five i thought that the original protagonist (which is eggman) going to be number 1. But once eggman was announced as No. 4, then it was predictable on who was 1. Mephy is the only character to "KILL" sonic.

@@t.i.m.theincrediblemusicia3954 Mephiles only killed Sonic from behind, which is a cowardly and cheap way to do it.
The Electro But he still killed him so what’s your point
I honestly agree that Mephiles is the best villain of the Sonic franchise. He needs to return in the games.
(me xD)I hope that in the next game he'll have the character development he deserves.

honestly the way i see of mephiles not refusing with iblis is because he physically couldn't, he way forcably split and needed the chaos emeralds to reform.
as for the path we saw him take, well he knew he had to free iblis to refuse but knowing how weak he was needed somebody powerful but gullable to do the dirty work, and every other moment he was being actively pursued by shadow as he hunted for the emeralds, and noting he managed to get the yellow, green and purple emeralds on his own and then using the emeralds power to get sonic into a killable position it pretty much worked, outside of being sealed inside a septor he pretty much only lived for a day before succeeding at his goal.
