I wrote down the instructions for myself, hope that's okay. I think the video shows everything really clearly, but I wanted to have something to look at esp. when measuring/marking. I would like to make the bodice longer, so that it ends at the waist instead of under the bust, so I sometimes wrote underbust/waist; not sure if that will work out though! 😬 TOP 1. Cut 2 rectangles Length - 20 cm (above the bust to waist/underboob +1cm seam allowance) Width (side to side) = bust size minus 2cm (80cm for Jess). 2. Mark the rectangles in the middle on top and bottom, then connect the markings to make a straight line 3. Mark (1/4 bust size + 1cm)(21cm for Jess) on both sides from the line in the middle 4. Make a mark at the bottom using the same distance and make straight lines 5. From the middle line, mark (1/2 width between breasts/+2cm) (13cm for Jess), on both sides 6. Mark 7cm down on the outside line 7. Connect the 2 marks from points 5 and 6; curve the line 8. On the edge of fabric, mark on the middle (10cm) 9. Connect this mark with the 7cm mark; curve the line 10. From the middle line, mark 12cm (1/2 width between breasts+1cm) on both sides; make straight lines 11. Cut the outside triangles 12. Fold on the line from step 10 (one at a time); pin 13. Draw a curve along the straight line for your bust 14. Sew along the curved line 15. Fold on the armpit line, draw a curved triangle 1cm to the outside, and sew. Both sides 16. Check the measurements (@3:48) 17. Pin the 2 pieces right sides together (don't sew yet) STRAPS 18. Cut a rectangle 70cm x 4cm 19. Fold the sides to the centre & pin. Better to see @4:25 20. Sew the strap (next to the edge) 21. Put the ends of the straps to the bodice @5:00 22. Sew from the bottom armpit mark to the bottom armpit mark on the other side (leave the bottom line not sewn); seam allowance is the same as the sewing foot 23. Turn the top right sides out & press SKIRT FRONT 24. Cut a rectangle for the front of the skirt (if there is enough fabric cut with pockets) Length (80cm) from the waist/underbust to the knee Width (92cm) - hip size (the widest part of the booty) 25. Change the sewing settings to the longest stitch and stitch along the width 26. Pull on the string to gather the fabric until it is (1/2underboob size + 2cm seam allowance) SKIRT BACK 27. Cut the same rectangle as the front but +2cm in LENGTH (if there is enough fabric cut with pockets) 28. Mark 4cm from the top of the skirt along the whole width 29. Double fold - first 1cm, then 2cm; pin; sew 30. Cut elastic to (1/2underboob+2cm); 1.5cm width; put into the casing 31. Pin the ends of the elastic to the ends of the fabric casing and sew into place 32. Pin the front skirt and back skirt right sides together and pin along the sides 33. Hem the bottom on double fold CONNECT THE TOP TO BOTTOM First, the front of the top has 2 sides, front and back 34. Connect the front side of the bottom (gathered by string) to the front part of the front side of the top - right sides together, but sew on the wrong sides 35. Take the back side of the front part of the top, fold the end, and pin to the bottom part (gathered). Pin from the FRONT side! 36. Sew from the front side (topstitching) 37. Make flaps at the front back - see 10:30 FINISHED! I think the 1 long strap needs to be separated and the ends finished, which wasn't shown in the video, but should be pretty easy to figure out. Fingers crossed it will work out for me!!
I love your method of designing, creating the pattern, and sewing. As I’ve commented on another video, I’ve learned so much from you, the way that you measure, transfer the measurements to the flat fabric, make the lines curved where needed, ... . It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to make pretty things for myself and not have to buy patterns - purchased patterns never fit me, and the adjustment process is so lengthy!! Bravo for being self-taught!
Thank you so much for making this video and always having such clear instructions!!! I made the dress but with a closed back instead of open and I love it! I hope you continue to make these videos
I love the way you explain everything. It makes it so easy for someone like me (who doesn't know how to sew or how to do a pattern 😂) to understand! Plus, everything you do is so pretty
Thanks a lot! I learn sewing by myself and I don't want to follow the complicated techniques. So I understand the feeling for beginners when it come to this part. Therefore I just want to show them that there're other way that are simple but still beautiful to make clothes
🥺🙌🏽 Jess, I really want to thank you for sharing amazing step-by-step tutorials for both pattern drafting and sewing, instead of just linking a pattern for purchase 💖
guys, i tried this and it was a huge success!!! i'm just a beginner but this was pretty do-able enough for me. it looked so good!! like i got it from the mall or a boutique. it's honestly my best and most wearable creation yet. try it out!! also, thank you so much for making these tutorials. it's brilliant and easy to follow!!
Really loving your videos! Not only am I getting inspiration, but seeing how your brain works to make these dresses is so wonderful. Commercial patterns are confusing to me, but your techniques of patterning off of your own measurements with simple shapes is very helpful!
This was so beautiful to make, and so easy and quick (made it in one afternoon). Your instructions are straight to the point as very clear to understand, thank you so much for posting this and making beautiful projects available. I would only recommend to those making this to make the straps a bit longer (i.e. instead of 70 cm try 80 cm) and to measure the elastic a bit stretched out, otherwise it will be a bit loose.
I don't know how you come up with all these simple but ingenious sewing tutorials. They are so cute and seem so easy to do. I love and watch all your videos.
Jess… I’ve never made anything with a sewing machine (I’m a knitter and crocheter). I’ve got myself a second hand machine and it’s sitting on my table as I’m “terrified “ of it 😂 I’ve practised some stitching on scrap fabric and I need to make something or I’ll never figure this out. Your videos are so inspiring and seem so easy to do! I think this one can be very beginner friendly. Let’s make it! Thank you also for using metric, most of the world uses metric but with so many US and UK creators it’s hard to find tutorials where I don’t have to be translating all to metric! 😅 THANK U, JESS!
Beautiful summer dress and seems easy to sew but for beginner like me I have to keep going back each time for the measurements. I am sure with practice I will get it. Thank you for sharing
Thank you so much for this tutorial! My dress turned out great! As some other comments said, remember that you need to make 2 straps. The straps weren't long enough to tie a nice bow and have some loose strap hanging down, so I added 40cm to each strap, so each measured 110cm long. I also stretched the elastic out when measuring it to make sure it would be tight enough when the garment was finished. I also recommend doing 2 seams for the gathering and using high-quality cotton, as mine broke twice and I had to keep redoing it! I chose to leave the sides of my dress a bit open, so I only attached about 12cm of the bottom front of the top to the skirt, leaving an extra 12cm open either side so you could see more of my waist/flanks. Just a personal design choice :) I’m really happy with my dress and am grateful for the tutorial! Thank you!
Amazing diy , it’s so pretty, and what I like the most is that you always wear your finished garments, thanks for sharing Jess, you really inspire to sew. God bless you
Thanks a lot! The reason why I got into sewing because I want to make my own clothes to wear everyday. So I want them to look like I bought them from a store :)
I dont know how many times i watch this video to make for my niece. And it turns out very cute, i hope its fit well . i love all your design in sewing.
I just finished a dress following this tutorial, i just made my dress shorter. I am so happy! Thank you, Jess. Your videos making it easier for a beginner like me. 😊
Wowi! Just finished sewing my dress, it came our adorable! It took time as it was my first sewing project, but it was worth it. Your tutorials are simple to follow and clear, thank you!
I saw a similar dress online the other day and thought I should be able to make it. Having you do a tutorial on it makes it even better as I'm not that well at sewing just yet aha
I just made it and it's perfect. My new favorite dress for sure. Super dreamy and great for summer. I have the same measurements as hers so I didn't change the pattern (just underbust 39 instead of 37). I am so in love thank you so much for such an amazing tutorial 😍
The fabric is very beautiful. And of course your design too, thanks Jess for the great tutorials, I am learning a lot about sewing thanks to you and your videos
i'm so grateful i found your channel! i've been wanting to get into sewing for so long but have been too intimidated to spend actual money on paper or pdf patterns in case i'm terrible at it. but your videos make it look so much easier than i would've expected! after spending way too much money on my fall and winter wardrobe, i'm definitely going to try my hand at sewing my spring/summer wardrobe this year. thank you so much!
I love this girl so much! She figured this out all by herself??!!! WOW! Even though sometimes her accent makes it hard for me to understand a word or two, I like how she writes out what she is doing! I love her channel and she seems like she would be super nice too!🥰🥰🥰😊
Hi Jess - I can't thank you enough for this tutorial! I am a brand new sewer and just finished making this dress because of your brilliant tutorial. I can't wait to follow along to more of your videos. You are such a great teacher!
I´ve been already waiting for such a tutorial:) And what I really love this time, is that you´ve filmed how to measure out all of the lenghts! Thanks!!
THIS IS SO PRETTY. I am going to see my therapist and I love her sm. I was planning to make a dress to go there. I love dressing up nicely to go meet her and this is definitely such a cute dress. I will update! 😂
The reason why i'm interested in this channel is because i love to make boho outfit in the simple & easy technique the way you do.....also i love hearing your accent... Love from Indonesia to vietnam....... See you next hhhwwweeekkkkkkkkk ❤️❤️❤️😊😊😊👍👍🍇🍒🍑🍓🍉🌼🌻🍍🍋🍊🍏🍅🥕
I can't thank you enough! I have wanted to learn how to sew my whole life, but my mum died when I was young and she wasn't able to teach me. My grandmother was a tailor when she was younger, but I wasn't able to learn from her either. I grew up wearing my grandmother made upcycled clothes. And I had special clothes made by my mum. I want to do that for my grandchildren one day, and to teach my daughter how to sew, but have always struggled and felt intimidated. But your tutorials are so helpful, I finally have to confidence to start doing it. Your explanations make so much sense to me!! Thank you so so much xx
I ended up making it straight away! At first I got some measurements wrong but I figured it out as I went along. Thankyou so much for the tutorial it turned out perfectly!!!
I just made this in 4T based on measurements I took and it came out SO AMAZING!! I used nautical print and soft rope for the strap. My daughter feels like a million bucks in it. Thank you!! Looking forward to making more of your tutorials and making this dress in different prints plus a matching one for myself 😀
Your pieces never cease to amaze! :) This dress will be perfect for my honeymoon. I can’t wait to make it. Thank you for sharing all your hard work and talent with us, Jess! 💕
I just wanted to thank you! This is the very first dress I made and I am so happy with the result! It really gave me the confidence to try, explore, learn and create even more :)
The moment you say u leaned to sew by yourself it actually gives me boost up I'm also a student I'm learning online so thank you for teaching other students like us keep it up ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Omg!! Just made one instead of skirt I made it into "CUTE OPEN BACK JUMPSUIT", the measurements it so amazingly clear and easy to follow you are one of the best DIY content creator in you tube sewing!!👍👍👍👍👍 if I can only post my photo 📸 super proud of my self now😊
It's so hot in the Philippines right now but I still want to go out and flaunt and I saw this video. Will definitely try to make one 😍 Thank you for the wonderful tutorial.
¡Me encantó! ¡Lo amé! Es el vestido más bonito (desde mi punto de vista), que has hecho de la colección de verano y los de primavera. Saludos desde Venezuela . Soy gran admiradora de tus transformaciones y de tu trabajo 😉🤗👍💪😍
I’ve made quite a few comments on your page but I’ve never given any helpful tips because I’m exactly like you I have taught myself to sew and I learn a lot from you personally and haven’t felt qualified to give any tips. But After watching you for over a year, I think that I’m ready to share just a little. I think the most helpful tip I can give you is to keep explaining things thoroughly, saying why you’re doing a certain method or not...it’s very very helpful, especially when it comes to making the pattern. I can follow any direction but if I don’t understand why I’m doing it then I can’t repeat the process on my own, and as a sewist I hope that I can expand my knowledge and become more creative on my own. For instance, today you actually showed the type of measurement you were taking on your body while you were explaining making the top. Something else that’s really helpful is when you give the formulas for how you come to your measurements, for example (again with the top), half the breast circumference +2 cm = the measurement for the front of the top. I think thorough explanations are just the best thing that any teacher can do. One thing I think would take this further, is by adding in those formulas you use to calculate the garments into the description box. You and I are the same size so doing a formula for us I can remember that. But let’s say I want to make the exact same garment for someone who’s three times my size, I really don’t have a clear understanding of how I would do that. When we do projects with you we’re always doing them for ourselves but I wanna know how to sew some thing for others. OK, those are my only tips, I hope they made sense. You’ve been my first sewing teacher from the beginning and it’s been about a year and a half and I still love your channel and I love you as a teacher and I hope you just continue to be encouraged that you’re doing a wonderful job and I’ve learned so much. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Kenzie, Thank you so much for such a super nice comment and sharing. I'm so glad that all my expectations in the video went well to you. And thank you for the tips about the other people sizes. I'll try to improve it in the future videos.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I can’t wait to try it! Please can you give some more clarity on which way to adjust the curves / darts for larger busts?
For larger bust, it's more important to adjust the rectangle at the front bodice. For the curves, it'll be more curve at the end. But you can also try that part on your body (inside out) to adjust the bust area to fit your body better
Thank you so much. You're amazing and this tutorial is a life saver. I purchased an open backed pattern from France but don't speak French. If you publish this as a pattern I'll buy it. X
I love ALL you projects whithaut exceptions, I would like to have all the clothes you made, I go make some of them to my daughter's, at 7 years want everything also 😂 All the best for you and your business Hug from ilha do Faial, Azores
TOP
1. Cut 2 rectangles
Length - 20 cm (above the bust to waist/underboob +1cm seam allowance)
Width (side to side) = bust size minus 2cm (80cm for Jess).
2. Mark the rectangles in the middle on top and bottom, then connect the markings to make a straight line
3. Mark (1/4 bust size + 1cm)(21cm for Jess) on both sides from the line in the middle
4. Make a mark at the bottom using the same distance and make straight lines
5. From the middle line, mark (1/2 width between breasts/+2cm) (13cm for Jess), on both sides
6. Mark 7cm down on the outside line
7. Connect the 2 marks from points 5 and 6; curve the line
8. On the edge of fabric, mark on the middle (10cm)
9. Connect this mark with the 7cm mark; curve the line
10. From the middle line, mark 12cm (1/2 width between breasts+1cm) on both sides; make straight lines
11. Cut the outside triangles
12. Fold on the line from step 10 (one at a time); pin
13. Draw a curve along the straight line for your bust
14. Sew along the curved line
15. Fold on the armpit line, draw a curved triangle 1cm to the outside, and sew. Both sides
16. Check the measurements (@3:48)
17. Pin the 2 pieces right sides together (don't sew yet)
STRAPS
18. Cut a rectangle 70cm x 4cm
19. Fold the sides to the centre & pin. Better to see @4:25
20. Sew the strap (next to the edge)
21. Put the ends of the straps to the bodice @5:00
22. Sew from the bottom armpit mark to the bottom armpit mark on the other side (leave the bottom line not sewn); seam allowance is the same as the sewing foot
23. Turn the top right sides out & press
SKIRT FRONT
24. Cut a rectangle for the front of the skirt (if there is enough fabric cut with pockets)
Length (80cm) from the waist/underbust to the knee
Width (92cm) - hip size (the widest part of the booty)
25. Change the sewing settings to the longest stitch and stitch along the width
26. Pull on the string to gather the fabric until it is (1/2underboob size + 2cm seam allowance)
SKIRT BACK
27. Cut the same rectangle as the front but +2cm in LENGTH (if there is enough fabric cut with pockets)
28. Mark 4cm from the top of the skirt along the whole width
29. Double fold - first 1cm, then 2cm; pin; sew
30. Cut elastic to (1/2underboob+2cm); 1.5cm width; put into the casing
31. Pin the ends of the elastic to the ends of the fabric casing and sew into place
32. Pin the front skirt and back skirt right sides together and pin along the sides
33. Hem the bottom on double fold
CONNECT THE TOP TO BOTTOM
First, the front of the top has 2 sides, front and back
34. Connect the front side of the bottom (gathered by string) to the front part of the front side of the top - right sides together, but sew on the wrong sides
35. Take the back side of the front part of the top, fold the end, and pin to the bottom part (gathered). Pin from the FRONT side!
36. Sew from the front side (topstitching)
37. Make flaps at the front back - see 10:30
FINISHED! I think the 1 long strap needs to be separated and the ends finished, which wasn't shown in the video, but should be pretty easy to figure out.
Fingers crossed it will work out for me!!
Thank you so much for helping others in term of understanding the process better.

It's my pleasure to share these tutorials
I ended up making it straight away! At first I got some measurements wrong but I figured it out as I went along. Thankyou so much for the tutorial it turned out perfectly!!!

I just made this in 4T based on measurements I took and it came out SO AMAZING!! I used nautical print and soft rope for the strap. My daughter feels like a million bucks in it. Thank you!!
Hi Kenzie,
Thank you so much for such a super nice comment and sharing. I'm so glad that all my expectations in the video went well to you. And thank you for the tips about the other people sizes. I'll try to improve it in the future videos.

You can do it!
Thanks so much Jess, I enjoyed watching this. You're amazing and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. Happy Wednesday darling 😘
Thanks a lot my dear! It's my pleasure and so glad you love it
