The entire point of the ridiculous and over-the-top absurdity is to showcase the ridiculousness of life. Comedy lives and breaths and it needs to come from honesty.
Older shows also did the same thing. All in the family was a show many many years ago that did the same thing.
Carol O'Conner did the best acting job being a bad person.
He was one of the most loving people in the world but you would not believe it because he did such a good job at pretending to be bad.
