I have listened to Dionne’s music for over 5 decades. She has the ability to make one feel the emotions she expresses. Simply incredible to have that kind of talent and ability! She has been a queen in expressing pathos in ballads. No one can do it better! I carry her in my heart!
That was one of the best albums she ever released. Barry Gibb and his production team did a fantastic job; and The Bee Gees were excellent writing just about all the songs on the album!❤

One thing people do is compare Dionne Warwick to Whitney Houston. I would not judge but it should be recognized that Dionne is as unique in her craft as Whitney was unforgetably unique in hers. It seems to me that one has the skills to pull us in the story, "her heartbreaks",and make us feel her emotions; and the other was able to make us transcend from this world to the next. Dionne is a "cantor" while Whitney sang from a pure, simple, deep place, and passionately gave it all.
Can you get this concert on DVD? I had it on vhs years ago. This is my fav part of the show. The album version of this is great, the live version amazing!!
Thelma Houston, Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, great singers, it must be something in the genes! I think Whitney was probably the best for sadly, such a relatively short time, whereas we were fortunate to enjoy Dionne's great talent over a longer period.
@chakataka I bought a Brazil-pressed DVD of this HBO special but I suspect it's a bootleg because the editing between songs is very sloppy and parts are missing. There is another DVD (perhaps an EU pressing) that may or may not be superior in quality.
I love Whitney, but I actually think Dionne's voice was better and that's coming from the biggest Whitney fan. I think Dionne knew how to sing using her full voice with greater command than Whitney. Now Whitney's did have a serious accident as a child and almost lost her voice completely and perhaps that's why her singing is not as effortless as Dionne and even her mother's voice. I do however think that Whitney's voice is a littlle bit more natually fuller than Dionne's too
Richjr Jackson Whitney’s tone was the thing with her voice and her belting from the chest and operatic head notes in her prime. Dionne is the consummate vocalist/hit maker I at times find that Cissy yells But she is the ultimate backup singer
Richjr you are right Ms. Dionne is completely all the way around better!!! Don't want to rant compare but since it was brought up. Ms. Dionne is better and way more skilled as a vocalist. Whitney although very good is not in the same league as Ms. Dionne.

I think Dionne voice it's quite full. She just did not pull her chest voice into head voice as much as Whitney would do.
