When looking at agencies... Ask how many clients designers work with at one time. It can be insane if you're juggling so many at once. She described one client for a few months... That sounds ideal.
I found being an in-house designer at a larger company let me be more of a specialist, which I liked. I was able to hone my craft.
Now... I'm not sure what to do next. They are both equally as interesting in different ways!

such a great point, thank you for commenting. it's true when designers can work on the same project for months makes things easier...I found that having 2 clients was my sweet spot, however it really depended on the project (how large the project was).
I can relate to your experience...when we start out in the industry both areas (in-house and agency) can teach us so much. but after being in the design field for a decade...it's more challenging to figure out what should come next 🙂
I hope you find a progression in your career that feels right for you.

Where’s the best place to transition from another discipline to design?

Thanks for the question Tony :) It depends on the discipline you're transiting from...however, if you're looking for a move into UX from development (like yourself), you need to build a UX portfolio. Work on 3 projects (could be fake projects), show your design process and iterations, show the original and finished design, how you get from A to B, the steps you took, the challenges etc (I'll have a video on that soon). And if your current job doesn't let you transition, you just gotta apply for UX jobs with your portfolio...I'm confident that you can get a job in Wellington in 3 months if you do the work. a UX portfolio, especially when you're transitioning or you start out in the field, is highly important. Luckily, you do have transferrable skills that you can leverage in a UX role.
