When I first saw "The Snake Pit", where this clip is from I cried because it reminded me of my parents passing away and ever since then I feel like I never have a real home to go to.
If it's any consolation for you, loss is the essence of this song. Going Home is symbolic of going back to the place where your soul originated. Note the lyrics: "Mother's there expecting me. Father's waiting too. Lots of folks gathered there, all the friends I knew."
yes this is the 'graduation' of somr of thse people at a Large mental hospital...yes they were well enough to leave...for those of us who have occashioned to know this subject too well.....I simply broke down with the poingency....Thismovie project was the result of Olivia de Havilland' WW 2 volunteering with the broken downsoldiers..she wanted to put more attention on Mental illness and how a regular personcan be just in their lives one momment then sufferning the Hell of the damned and being subjected to absolute pain..., humiliation,,interuption of life......
Going home, going home I am going home Quiet like, some still day I am going home . It's not far, just close by Through an open door Work all done, care laid by Never fear no more . Mother's there expecting me Father's waiting too Lots of faces gathered there All the friends I knew . I'm just going home . No more fear, no more pain No more stumbling by the way No more longing for the day Going to run no more . Morning star light the way Restless dreams all gone Shadows gone, break of day Real life has begun . There's no break, there's no end Just living on Wide awake, with a smile Going on and on, going on and on . Going home, going home I am going home Shadows gone, break of day Real life has begun . I'm just going home

You just feel the incredible loneliness and displacement of people of the ages..... heartbreaking, and yet the humanity of it all .....
No matter how many times I see this movie, this scene always makes me cry.

@@davemattia Thanks for the comments. I didn't look at the lyrics that way. It's a more comforting interpretation.
my Mother's favourite song as sung in that film. so moving.
Best version. Never seen it as an actual recording.

Great, haunting song.
My friend just lost his wife today, Rest in Peace
Lassie 's first TV Mum
Jan Clayton as the singing inmate.
The singer is Jan Clayton, who went on to play the mother on the original TV show of "Lassie."
And the one who introduced "If I Loved You" from "Carrousel"

"I know I'm well now doctor...I'm no longer in love with you."
No, Hester. You know we don't do that anymore. Oh, Hester! You talked !
This was once posted some years back then removed by the copyright holder. Beautiful song.
This song came to mind when we were finally able to go home after hurricane Florence
Of course today they all live on the street
Going home, going home
I am going home
Quiet like, some still day
I am going home
.
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
Never fear no more
.
Mother's there expecting me
Father's waiting too
Lots of faces gathered there
All the friends I knew

I'm just going home
.
No more fear, no more pain
No more stumbling by the way
No more longing for the day
Going to run no more
.
Morning star light the way
Restless dreams all gone
Shadows gone, break of day
Real life has begun
.
There's no break, there's no end
Just living on
Wide awake, with a smile
Going on and on, going on and on
.
Going home, going home
I am going home
Shadows gone, break of day
Real life has begun
.
I'm just going home
