J J the Jet Plane prevails in three-way battle for Sprint
In the 1,200-meter (5.97-furlong) $1,760,855 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint (HK-G1), former South African champion sprinter J J the Jet Plane came charging hard and fast on the outside at odds of 17-to-1 under jockey Piere Strydom to beat top Singapore sprinter Rocket Man by a nose.
Three-time Hong Kong champion sprinter and 2010 Horse of the Year Sacred Kingdom appeared to be making a strong move in the final furlong but weakened in the final strides and finished third, three-quarters of a length behind Rocket Man.
"We had a great run," Strydom said. "He were always traveling [well]. When we eased out on the straightening, I was happy to go after Rocket Man because I didn't want him to get away.
"My bloke gave me everything and we got there on the line:
J J the Jet Plane, a six-year-old Jet Master gelding, covered the distance in 1:08.84, winning for the fifth time from 13 starts this season. The victory was his third straight for trainer Lucky Houdalakis after returning to South Africa following a tough campaign in England with trainers Mike de Kock and Richard Hannon.

Brilliant riding by Piere “Striker” Strydom on JJ the Jet Plane!

Old J J saved some of the best form of his career for last, winning 4 different G1 sprints in 3 different countries in the final 7 starts of his career. He won the G1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint at Scottsville & G1 Mercury Sprint at Clairwood in South Africa, the G1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin, and the G1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in Dubai. Not too shabby by anyone's standards.

bad luck for Rocket Man this year, it lost 3 Group 1 (Dubai Golden Shaheen, Singapore and Hong Kong Sprint), a half length or head, lol! the most consistent sprinter of the year.

@SvendBosanvovski you're right that Black Caviar has to be the best in the world now but Ortensia's trainer Tony Noonan did say that she had lost an extremely significant 30 kg since that race against Black Caviar for which Ortensia was first up. Not to mention Ortensia had the pace to suit here

@AWrulez This is from Racing Post "Straight lines, although admittedly not a perfect guide, through each of those pieces of form put Black Caviar some way clear of the likes of Kinsale King, Rocket Man &, of course, Starspangledbanner. After Sunday's G1 sprint, you can add the winner, JJ The Jet Plane, & third, Sacred Kingdom, to that list, since lines through fifth-placed Ortensia confirm the RPR standard for Black Caviar." & P Moody came out & said that she WILL travel next year. Great news!

Was always going to be a great race. Pretty clear from that Sacred Kingdom has been dethrowned as the world's best sprinter... although he did run a fantastic race. The winner was perfectly ridden. I know it's difficult to draw form lines but little Ortensia was only 2 behind the winner. She ran probably close to the same time as she did when absolutely streeted by Black Caviar by 6L up the Flemington chute in the Patinack. Southern Hemisphere sprinters are just too good. JMO.

@kirikou441 Southern hemisphere sprinters are the best in the world. Local form stands up to the best international races. That is why she is the stand-out in terms of RPR's for this year.

@GBeret83 Agreed. Even though he's obviously in the twighlight of his career he's still a formidible opponent. There's no mystery as to why he's been the top rated sprinter in the world for the last 3 years. I think that the IFHA rankings will now have Black Caviar as the out-right, top-rated sprinter in the world. She's something else. If she stays sound I think she might well prove herself to be one of the best ever. If she accomplishes half as much as SK has in his career I will be surprised.

indeed, this horse is very impressive, I hope he will run in Dubai and Ascot this summer lol!

@AWrulez It's no secret that Noonan was preparing her for this race. He also said that it was a bit of a ploy to dodge Hay List and Black Caviar. It's testimony to how good they are that he should instead opt to take her up against the likes of Rocket Man and SK in a big ($1.7m) international. Last year she won the Winterbottom Stakes in Perth. This is a pretty big step up in class. I think she went super.

@AWrulez Ortensia was definitely fitter for this race & no doubt more suited by the conditions. But she probably ran the same time in this race for the 6F as she did in the Patinack. Imagine what BC would have run given the going and the extra pressure she might have had? In the Patinack she was even-timing for the first 4. She was only really ridden out in the last 400m & was eased down in the last 100m. Based on this her Timeform rating was 129. I agree with Sven... on another planet.

@MrJakobBrown The Caulfield cup run didnt break his heart .Weekend Hussler was a Autum Racing Carnival Champion , and his breeding suggested that he would run the 2400m so to run that they had to go to Melbourne he didnt do much after that run because the spring racing was too hard for him

@dessiesdoneit Hay List is a better horse than both Rocket Man and JJ The Jet Plane his run in last Saturday's TJ Smith Stakes was a pointer of that

@bgardiner2000 Ortensia did run a huge race but just saying that you can't take the formlines literally. Black Caviar beat Ortensia by 6 while JJ beat her by 1 3/4 lengths but Ortensia was 30 kg overweight and first up for Black Caviar whereas she was at her peak with everything to suit in this race. There's little doubt Black Caviar should be rated the best regardless, but we don't know if she's "up on another planet" quite just yet

if you're seriously trying to justify comparing times clocked on different racecourses in different countries a month apart, then I can't help you.... for the sake of argument Ultra Fantasy clocked a 2-3 length faster time in Japan than Black Caviar and we know he wouldn't have touched her at Flemington... though Black Caviar is still clearly the best sprinter right now, I disagree in that I don't think we know just how much better she is than the other top sprinters

Sacred Kingdom was brave in defeat but he's no longer the machine he was which is understandable since he's 7 years old and has suffered leg fractures and that colic attack. as both trainer and jockey said, he still ran well enough to pick up a few more big domestic races
