I have CKD 1 with Egfr of 115 . Should i also follow these strict diets ?
Nutrition needs should definitely be individualized based on someone's stage of CKD, labs, and other health concerns...stage 1 CKD (especially with no proteinuria) is definitely not as strict. Generally no potassium restriction. Phos additives should still be avoided. And getting plenty of fiber from whole plant foods (especially fruits and veggies) is recommended. Generally stage 1-2 is recommended to avoid excessive protein intake, but is not on a "low protein" diet like stage 3-5.
@@plantbasedkidneyskitchen i do have slight proteinuria though
I've made this twice and everyone loves it. It is so flexible - as Michelle points out because I can cook meat and add it for non-vegan guests. Last time, I just added a few cooked shrimp to my guests' bowls . We are even serving it to Dr. Will Tuttle (author of World Peace Diet) two weeks from now.
Yay so happy to hear you are enjoying it with your guests! Thank you for sharing that :)
What if your potassium level is normal and stage 3b CKD? Does that individual have to watch potassium levels or only if potassium in blood is high?
Potassium needs are individualized. People with CKD typically only need to limit in the diet if their blood levels are elevated! Many people with CKD have no potassium restriction, but many people do, so I try to make all my recipes low or moderate potassium so that they're the most relevant to as many people with CKD.
I just wish I knew the UK measurements of American recipes.
Shoot, yea everything is measured in weight there right??
Coconut oil and cream have 85% saturated fat. Compared to 18% saturated fat in avocado, why would you consider coconut to be kidney friendly?
Hello! If you watch the video, I explain that the amount used (1/2 can) is spread out amongst 4 servings and that it is important what it is paired with (high fiber, plant based meal). I don't recommend people use coconut oil, rather avocado oil or olive oil (if they are using oils).
Better bit to use oil I think. I have made this without oil and used 1-4 th amount sodium broth and substituted water. Also you can cut coco milk with oat milk. I also add 1/4 minced jalapeño ( I process it with garlic, onion and ginger in a min chop. The black pepper and lemon juice squeeze finish this nicely. I bet white pepper would be even better The edamame makes the texture special. I made this soup 3 times and tweaked the recipe eqch time to make it healthier - came out GREAT!# 🎉
Correction: Best to use NO OIL AT ALL ( steam veg in water or broth).
Thank you, Michelle. Now I know what to cook for my guests - I'll just add chicken or shrimp to theirs and leave mine plain. Your, big fan, Carolyn😋
Hi Carolyn, I'm glad you will find this recipe useful! Enjoy! :)
Is it okay with stage 4 or 5?
Yep! I provide all the kidney specific nutrition info so that you can make sure the portion and nutrition info fits your individual needs. But it is low sodium, not high potassium, and protein is on the lower end for stage 3-5 CKD not on dialysis (people on dialysis would want to increase protein by adding tofu or another higher protein food)!
Just found your channel - Great video - keep up the brilliant work!
Thanks so much! :)
So glad I found this channel. I hve ckd3 and also severe osteoporosis plus tree nut allergies so it is very hard to know what to eat. Thank you.
Welcome! I am glad you found it too! My recipes are relevant to osteoporosis as well. But I would definitely work with a dietitian 1:1 so they can fine tune things and provide individualized recs!
*Thanks for adding curry to the kidney friendly diet* now I can have curry and also I had no idea anything coconut was kidney friendly!
Enjoy! :) I explain coconut in the video too!
