This is a demonstrator of a Porter governor. The governor is attached to a DC motor with a gear reducer. We use a DC motor driver to control the governor. Almost every control engineering textbook starts with a governor description. We have one at CUNY/CSI!
Engines, turbines, and generators are often required to run at a constant speed independent of the power they need to produce. The governors are used to measure and regulate the speed of these devices. The Porter governor is one of the most ancient and still one of the most reliable control systems for regulating speed.
