I don't know what I'm more impressed by, the card trick or dem 6" heels she was wearing. lol
I love these tricks where things seem to go wrong. This is a very elegant trick. Congratulations.
I’d say it depends on how well it is written and performed. Here the reveal with everything else being the forced card is really a nice idea.
Makes it a really enjoyable build up to the conclusion.

my favorite tricks are the ones where i think i know how they're done, and yet i could watch them 100 times over because the performance is flawless. this is one of them. a very fun routine and like penn said, very unique
This was hugely enjoyable trick and performance. Penn was very clearly excited about not being sure if they got it right, and I know I was wrong in my personal guessing.
Thata just acting . When allison talks to the performer, Penn amd Teller tell the producers how they think the trick was done. The producers let them know if they guessed correctly or not. If they are right, they decide how to communicate it in an entertaining way
In addition to what LoneRanger (correctly) stated, there wasn't much room for alternate methods. I like the trick, but it wasn't designed to fool magicians. You see it once and if you know, you know.

that was a very unique trick. I really liked it. I think I know how she did it, but her execution was so perfect that I couldn't spot anything. I think that's what makes it even better.

Great trick!! I couldn't understand Penn's code, but I did pickup on some of it, yet still couldn't figure out completely how the trick goes. So here's a Fooled Me trophy, from me to you!!! 🎉🏆FM!!!
I think his “double back” comment means each card has a double stuck to it, but not sure how she flips it to make it look like 1 card.
@@scottmuck I’m probably wrong but I’m assuming it has to do with which way you flip the board, I’ve seen cards before that change depending on how you rotate/flip them.
@@scottmuck the line where he calls her unflappable is more important in this case and explains how it looks like 1 card.
I’m sure penn knows, but like he said he cheated. I’m sure he had a idea but he was just about confused about it too. So he didn’t ask for the prop, he took it. So now the big question: did they figure it out during the close up? No….. did they have a idea how it was done? Yes, after close examination of the prop I’m sure they found it, but it wasn’t anything that they expected. So, yes penn did cheat, to find out how the trick was done, because he really didn’t know.
@@MsNoPixel the double back statement was in regards to the card force she used. she put the 4 of hearts face up right under a double backed card at the top of the deck, so when she flipped half the deck over it appeared to be the card penn chose, its a classic card force so i doubt that’s where she intended to fool them. i wont give away the rest of the trick because its certainly less common, but if you google some of the terms penn used you might be able to figure it out. incredible and very original trick regardless, its one that i find very entertaining even though i know how its done. it takes classic magic principles and uses them in a novel and genuinely interesting way which is a talent in and of itself

I didn’t realize what was gonna happen until like 5 seconds before the board switch and I was shocked!! In my head I was just like “nooo.. nooo she isn’t gonna flip the board!” So good

Honestly, I sometimes find myself more baffled at how Penn and Teller manage to "communicate" their "how we think you did it" to the magician where it doesn't sound like they've said anything at all, yet the magician almost always knows exactly what hints were given.
I think the key word was flap ?
@@Splatcake she really capitulated when they said expensive. I think it might have been a video white board of some kind.
Key phrase was "double-back". She had to buy special cards for this.

I’m no magician so I’m probably wrong but I guess it was a forced choice to choose 4 of hearts. Then she lets them choose any card in the grid but it’s not really a choice because they’re all the same and that’s what makes it expensive (they’re all gimmicked.)
If you did a trick and knew how it worked then you would 100% pick up the keywords because they pertain to the trick you had to learn or make
Cool trick! I wouldn't have figured it out without carefully listening to what Penn said at the end.
I love shows like this and performers like Tori. I have a rather creative mind, tempered by logic but I cannot figure out magic tricks and frankly don’t want to. The sheer genius behind them and skills required make me believe that a little magic truly exists in the world, and that is never a bad thing.

This was fascinating and I loved it. I guess somehow the 4❤️ was forced, but I can’t imagine how, and I think all the cards on the frame had the 4❤️ showing on the hidden side, but I have no idea how you hid 3 of them before flipping them over! Hope to see you again!

Loved seeing you on Penn & Teller. Not biased, but heard so many wonderful comments on your teaching from my daughter - who took class from you at Harvey Mudd.
This is a good example of how a little creativity can let you set up a fantastic illusion with pretty straightforward methods.
I applaud her for her honesty.
If she wasn't honest the producers would have stepped in and they wouldn't televised this act.

I was holding my breath until the end with the excitement, thinking if the reveal is gonna be the one I am thinking of or not. That's a fun trick. I knew there'd be a twist but didn't see it coming until we were almost there. I think this was a rare instance where I was figuring out what Penn was figuring out at the same time - in terms of how this had to be done, and in terms of what an awesome magician Tori is!
Very impressive reveal at the end!
Also having naked arms (I mean w/o sleeves) and showing both your palms simultaneously from time to time, excludes palming of the 3 different cards (because that would be a way to put a different card on top of the selected card when revealing it). There were couple of moments where Tori passes in-front of the cards and in theory could have snuck a card at that time, but looking careful before & after it doesn't seem to have done anything weird.
Penn's choice with the top card also puts it above Tori's head, so obviously there's no trickery done when she's passing in-front (I didn't see her jump :)).
Very cleanly performed, which keeps the mystery for muggles like me :)

Not gonna lie, her stage presence and demeanor makes me wish I had her for a math professor. She just gives off such a fun friendly vibe.

@@Lleanlleawrg the situation is really unusual. You stand there while she listens to questions in an ear piece then she turns to you and asks them. They edit it together to make it look like a conversation.

Simple, clean, and after Penn's masterful 'code', I realized how easy this is, yet so gosh darned effective too for a really well done trick that looks amazing. Loved it, pretty lady :)
SPOILER ALERT!! if you don't want to know how (I believe) she did this trick stop reading this text....
1.- The card was force, that happens when Tori turns the top half of the deck over the "selected" card, there she is switching whichever card Penn really selected by the card she wanted him to choose.
2.- The cards that are placed on the "glass" board have a special treatment or ink and the "glass" is actually polarized or something like that, so when the faces of the cards are placed against the glass, you will always see a 4 of hearts but when you actually peal the card and look it without the glass in the middle, it will show a different face, so basically you have a full "normal" deck which when seen through that "glass" it looks as if it was all 4 of hearts, but the back of the cards is not treated and so you see it through the glass.
That way you just can peek any number of cards and reverse them and the chance of getting an actual 4 of hearts is minimal (you could even make sure there is no 4 of hearts at all but you are taking the risk of having to show a duplicate card), then, whenever you are ready (the cards pealead are sticked back reversed) you can reverse the panel and all the other cards will show up as 4 of hearts.
it could be done with 52 lcd ultra flat screens but I think it would be just too expensive.

You're thinking too high tech., or rather, a different side of high tech. The cards taped to the glass are flap cards. She is able to quickly and easily change their suit from a 4 of hearts to whatever suit is on the other flap. That is why Penn says that she's 'unflappable'. She also uses a double back card as part of her force. I'd need to look again to see exactly what she did on the force but that is why Penn mentions that they 'doubled back' while thinking about how she did her trick.
@@kenanderson3954 keep in mind that it looks like you can "see" the background through the glass when she peals the selected card, so, if the 4 of hearts was already sticked to the other side of the glass, it must have some special back face to look like the background, and even if it was that way, how would she be able to preselect the exact three cards to put a regular back instead of a 4 of hearts. You can clearly see the back of the cards she pealed and you can see they have a regular back, so the only way I can think of making this trick work every single time is that the glass is actually some kind of polarizing filter and the faces of the cards are specially printed to look like a regular back to the naked eye but as a 4 of hearts through that glass...
@@manusoftar Do you know what flap cards are? I feel like there is a disconnect there. She is actually removing the card from the glass/plastic panel. This one card can be manipulated so that upon reveal it will be either a 4 of hearts or another card from the deck. They can even be made so that they can be changed between 3 cards, while still only looking like a single card. Seriously, just look into Hondo Chen flap cards. They're incredible to the point where they actually look like magic.

Spotting immediatly that we had 3 rows with 9 cards, and 3 rows with 8 cards, (9+8)x3 = 17x3 = 51, I was expecting every card BUT the selected card to be there..
Yes, exactly. None of the cards on the board were 4-of-Hearts, even though they all appeared to be. How deep was the appearance? About 5µm, I'm guessing, the thickness of a thin paper flap. Flip the flap and one now has a totally different card.
Only part I can figure out is that Penn didn't choose the 4 of hearts, she did. Otherwise this is baffling, amazing and a refreshing up-turn for this season!
Agreed, there must have been a force of choice. I was expecting a sleight of hand when she covered the card of Teller with her body for a moment, but he changed the card after that. And the opportunity didn't happen again with Penn's or Alyson's card.
It certainly was clean for my rather amateur eyes.
I do enjoy magic tricks with a twist. I very much enjoyed this one. The reveal at the end was really nice.
Doesn't matter to me if she didn't manage to fool them, it was a great trick and if the career in math doesn't add up in the end, she will always have a future in magic.

There's a tiny slip (I think) just before she pulls the 4 of hearts out of the deck, where you can see a card below it is facing downward, then a moment later, the card below is facing upward. I don't know exactly how the sleight of hand worked but it looks like she had a method for slipping the 4 of hearts face down into the deck at the desired spot.
I would say that the top card of the deck are 2 cards sticking together with the backs facing outwards.
After she turns the upper package around, this top card is right on top of the chosen card. When she goes through the cards, she seperates the 2 sticking cards. After she puts away the top half (face-up), now the top card is the one, which was sticked together, face-down, which shows the 4 of hearts. The other cars, which was sticking on to it has 2 backs. After she turns around the lower half of the deck to show the faces, it's hidden at the end of this pack.
That seems like a pretty easy way to do this kind of force. And it uses very simple gimmicks.
The clue must be, that she didn't pull out the chosen card, but turns around the package on top of it.

I think I love this woman. Funny, a GENIUS, and her voice is so soothing. But more importantly, she’s an absolute badass with cards.
I am the opposite of an abstract thinker. I have to see it, touch it, taste it, and hear it to understand it. So glad there are people like you who can do it all in your head. The only clue from Penn that I caught was that it was an expensive trick. Doesn’t matter. The trick rocks whether I know the secret or not. Well done!

Out of all the magicians who have like other career/education pursuits outside magic, mathematician has got to be the most common one I’ve seen. Maybe one could give me the stats on that? 😅 Very interesting to see the cross over! I definitely think it has a lot to do with how both of those groups minds “work.” Especially with her because she mentioned how much of her work is theoretical and creative🙂
Every magician is happy to present himself as a mathematician, scientist, etc. Promo is part of modern magic and is preparing the atmosphere for the next trick (suggestion of non-existent principle, averted attention, etc.). However, the fact is completely different about the profession. Never, or almost never is related to a trick. Specific professions only provides more free time ...
yah i've noticed that too, then i realized - math is magic & magic is math :) when i started to learn magic i started understanding math better , so fun !

@@briansam2524 Rest assured, they dont allow novice or amateur skilled magicians to even pass the first level of the show auditions.. Making it on the show, ahs %100 meant youve made a name for yourself in the art of show magic and they/the magic community wants to see your stuff on stage. Not fooling pen and teller isnt a slight in any means. All it means is you're apart of their club and they're jiving with what you do. Thats also why they dont explain tricks. Thy understand the magician is skilled and the AUDIENCE(potential artist fans) wont understand the trick because its well executed. It would be like a Jurassic Park/Marvel CGI artists saying they see the CGI in a very well executed piece of film.

i love that she said “a lot of these games are designed so the house always wins,” because it’s not mathematically accurate to say they all are. there are a couple of video poker variants with paytables that have a greater than 100% return to the player, provided it’s played at a high enough denomination, for a sufficiently long time, with perfect decision making.

Oh thank you! My script originally listened a few examples (blackjack, craps, roulette) but producers suggested we not point that out while performing in a casino 😂

If you look, right when she first fans the deck - "Penn tell me when to stop" - you can see a bit of a sheen on the top card, like there's a piece of scotch tape upon it. That's the four of hearts for the force.
For the swap, notice how her hand comes up *under* the selected cards. I thought she was using that to drop the four into her hand, but then both her hands are visible afterwards. So she's probably flipping the card underneath the back with that..

You're on the right track about the top card, but that's not the four of hearts. The four of hearts is just beneath it. Penn makes a comment about going down one road that explains that part of the trick
Of course, 4H was a forced card (otherwise the trick wouldn't work), but you have to evaluate positively that it did it very smoothly and naturally. :)
Yeah I thought the force was fairly obvious. It's not a natural looking way of taking a card from the deck but the rest of the trick was really good and I haven't figured out how she did it.
Might have been better to just follow the plot line of finding the "ace of spades" rather than a forced card.
@@InspectorRowan Natural in the sense of this method. Surely it is obvious to everyone that the first card must be "special" ... You are right, the second part was impressive, but even this trick is simple, if you have 1000-2000 USD free.
