Thank you Karen for sharing these tips. I just want to share my experience, I spent 90% of the time backtesting, but only 3% of the time with an open trade, and clicking the buy/sell button. The remaining 7% of the time is spent watching the chart and waiting for a valid signal that fit my entry criteria. Just like what you said, buying and selling, and the time with an open trade, is really short.
Backtesting for me is a good way to curb over trading in real market. At the same time backtesting is so key to refining the trading plan. Usually i spend about 2hrs on about 3 months data. Backtesting and doing ASR on it. I keep a folder on all my trades and mistakes so i can refer to them.

Great advice, I didn't rate backtesting but since not being able to explain some unexpected moves and losing trades that had met my confluences, I reverted to learning how to backtest, and know my percentage chances of winning then apply the Mark Douglas philosophy, by also knowing my risk management trading plan. Yeah this is so true, Currently Im doing manual backtesting but in stocks, and not as volatile as in Forex doing manual backtest you will discover too much information not only if your system will work, You will also understand how often the set up will show? Is it inclined on your future plans? and many more information Its really hard you really need to take a break 1 additional advice dont back test for the sake of doing, Do it with integrity THANKS Karen

Before, I used to back test and take profits early. My win rate was 88% but I lost bigger than I gained. Then, I learned what “cut losses short, let profits run” really meant. My win rate is now 37% but my gains were a lot bigger than my few losses. I highly recommend backtesting as well. I.e if it fails 4 out of 10 pairs 3. When back testing how much months do you examine for the survey?

I don't backtest. I trade manually, starting very small and so far getting very good results. I don't want to trade like a robot. I prefer rely on my experience which keeps growing. So I can't run backtests... Love what you're doing Karen! (heart)

I have used some of simulator or trading view day candle of replay option to backtest. I am using trend following strategy in H4 timeframe. The problem is that my strategy work on Oct,18 to Dec,18 but from jan,19 it doesn't work. Can you suggest me what should I do, change it or keep it.

I backtested a strategy and it works well on some years and failed on some years. The market is erratic. Will you still use the strategy if it works very well for this year up to date based on backtesting via EA on everytick ? Strategy which runs on EA.
That's true I do backtesting every weekends, using my strategies have learnt like Fibonacci Retracement, trend line channels, gartely patterns and many more strategies for me to analyse the market get prepared for the coming trading time

Karen Foo. Karen, I trade manually. This is how my grandfather trades. He always wins. He trades with a pin and paper. God it's hard to master trading like that. One day I hope I can get to that point.
I think this talk about the holy grail is a bit of a myth. Something people love to talk about. Like the simple way we all talk about making big money in trading is the most fun and interesting phenomenon in the world. If I should take it seriously I have seen when backtesting that a holy grail cannot exist. The reason is that most indicators will signal too often to filter out bad trades. The market only gives you good profitable trades quite seldom. What you can do though is look at things and trading in a more wholesome way. Look at several things and indicator(s) combined. That can make your win % higher.

Dont get what you mean. You back test at least 1 year data or more to develop a strategy or to improve your confidence on the current strategy

If you are using trading view. Just use the replay bar to the timeframe you need. And play it slowly. Candle by candle and forcast.
