I added this chucking practice into my warm ups, and I also added a song to learn that included chucking (Be Wherever You Are, Steven Universe). I practiced for at least a week with it being absolutely terrible, I just couldn't consistently do it. Then a few days ago, it totally clicked, and now I can do it no problem! It was so weird! It was like riding a bike - one minute, I just couldn't figure it out, but once my body just figured out the way to do it, I can't figure out why it was so hard to begin with. Thank you for these videos and baby step-by-step instruction that helped me over that hump!!
Seems easy when you are just using one chord. Seems much more difficult when attempting a more complicated strumming pattern. Thanks for the great lesson, Cory.
You have become one of my favorite UA-cam uke teachers. I have been trying to learn to chuck for so long and your video is the first one that put it in a way that not only made sense, but allowed me to learn how to do it right really quickly. Thank you for helping us learn.
Hi Cory, thanks for the shout out what a lovely surprise! Love being a Patreon member and attempting to learn the ukulele. Your lessons are newbie friendly.💕💕💕
Thank you for these amazing Ukulele basics lessons. I get my 1st of 2 Ukulele's delivered tomorrow and I'm getting a head start watching your videos and learning so as soon as I get my Uke I will be ahead of the game and be able to start practicing immediately. Your a wonderful and knowledgeable teacher with a lot of positive vibes. Your a joy to follow. By the way, I believe the word you were looking for to describe the bottom part of the palm you didn't know the word for, is what we in the martial arts call the " heel of the palm". If that helps for any of your future videos. I don't know what the actual technical or medical term is for that part of the body but that is what we call it in class, and it makes sense as it is the equivalent to the heel of the foot.
So good explained! Tried before with other videos and never got it to sound as it should, with this I got it before the end of the video! Amazing. Thank you!
Just been from the mistletoe tutorial video and found out i can't chuck :))) in fact, i can never chuck so i checked out this video and NOW I CAN CHUCK. Guys cory has some kinda sorcery, this is hella awesome. Thanks cory
so happy - I've watched this video like a thousand times and have been practicing hard over the past few months and I can finally CHUCK!!! I'm so excited!!! My brain just fought and fought then finally - it clicked! thank you so much for your awesome instruction - I'm working on Rhiannon now and am looking forward to playing ALL THE SONGS with CHUCK!!! : )
I love my concert Enya Nova U. Depending on if there is a sale it’s around $70-90 USD, which is more expensive that some cheaper brands, but if you by a $40-50 ukulele, the sound won’t be as good. I personally consider anything under $100 to be a less expensive ukulele. As a note the soprano size does come in at $40-50 when on sale.
THERE'S AN EASIER WAY TO CHUCK.... Most people say to mute with the thumb/palm, but there's an easier way. Make a karate chop pose with your hand and mute the strings near the bridge with edge of your pinky and palm, while strumming with your pointer finger. Basically, you're muting opposite your thumb. Just learned it in minutes.
I don't get it :( how does it become one sound? like if you strum then your hands already like below the strings so you'd have to kind of come back up to mute it, so how would you do that in only one sound?
It takes practice to get it in one fluid motion. It took me a few weeks of practice to get it right when I first tried. You only chuck in the downstrum though not in the up.
Look folks, this video is pointless. You can avoid the headache by learning how to palm mute followed by chucking. You simply palm mute with the side of your hand instead of the backing of your thumb. Much more reliable than this bullshit video.
@@awylly1 There's an easier way! I promise.... Look up palm muting (used in modern metal.) However, if you use the same finger position, you can chuck while palm muting, using the side of your hand, rather than your thumb underneath. It's like cheating, but sounds identical.
@@CoryTeachesMusic Your video doesn't help everyone, I'm afraid. Teaching everyone to chuck underneath their thumb means you have to chuck extremely close to the instrument. I got around this whole mess by "palm muting while chucking." I simply chuck with the side of my hand.

Hey Miss Cory! I realy like the way you teach us uke! I was wondering if you could make more tutorials on the Steven Universe songs please !
Thank you gold patron! I was just trying to figure this out! Thanks Cory😎
Can you show a closeup of your hand? It seems like you’re hitting the strings, but when I do that it sounds different…?
Great video! We have subscribed your channel! Take care and have a blast Monday!
Great tutorials,
I have the same uke , what king of strings are those?
Hello from Belgium
That was so helpful. Thanks
Hi Cory! What’s the best affordable ukulele to start with? ❤️

@@CoryTeachesMusic thank you so much Cory! I appreciate it so much!😍💕 stay safe and have a great one!💗
Hi miss Bristol I’m ready to see u on school
Thanks a lot🙂
Thanks!
I have a very bad habit of hitting the uke with my fingernails. (Even worse when chucking). Is there a technique or a way to avoid this? )

Does this work with a ukulele pick? Thanks!
I don’t use ukulele picks personally, but I technically you could, but I don’t like to and don’t. That is not to say you can’t or shouldn’t.
still can’t do thta 😢
That part is the HEEL of your hand, I believe. This is difficult for me!!!
🔥🔥🔥
Hi Cory, does chucking also work when using a pick?
Yes!
