R. Dean Taylor - Indiana Wants Me - 45 RPM - WITH Siren

  • Опубліковано 10 вер 2024
  • Original Rare Earth Records #5013
    Vinyl 45 RPM
    Debut 9/5/70
Peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
    Written by R. Dean Taylor.
    Produced by R. Dean Taylor.
This is the first pressing version WITH the siren.
Due to a law in effect at the time that prohibited siren sounds to be played on the radio, right after this record was released, it was changed by taking out the siren. Therefore, two versions exist of this record - with and without the siren!

I remember this getting lots of air time on the radio for awhile. Nice to hear it again.
Actually purchased a 45 copy of this song. Back then, they sold 45's at your local grocery store! (for about a dollar)
33 record albums were $5 or $6, for price comparison. I got $5 for mowing a lawn every week. Took my money to the grocery store (spent it for music) !

Love the siren in this song. Excellent song in a Camaro riding with the windows down on AM radio in the 70's👮

+Brian Haney another song with sirens is The "Night that Chicago Died" by Paper Lace. I was just a kid in 1970 when I heard this as well as Paper lace's song.

Now I remember...LOL...I had forgotten how that one sounded, it has been so long since I've heard this one! Thanks again...added it to my "Spinning Vinyl" playlist and also to my writing tablet where I list records I want to add to my collection. I also made a ledger of what I have in my collection so that I don't accidentally buy a duplicate of a record I already have.

Back then they couldn't use a mouse click to remove the siren, so they had to mixdown the whole song again and the result was an inferior mix overall. The version you played here with the siren was the one that caught lightning in a bottle. Thanks for sharing it in all its analog glory!!!

I didn't know that about sirens prohibited on radio at the time this was a hit - thanks again Spencer for a little known piece of trivia!
I'm guessing that the siren in the instrumental bridge was allowed to stay as it wasn't deemed to be alarming to listeners halfway thru the song? Probably wouldn't have been a hit if R. Dean would have had to re-record.
Oh, I own a copy of the non-siren 45, and have this version on 20 Hard To Find Motown Classics Volume 2 - a CD that's out of print.

Though I never knew there was a siren-less 45 version, you should also put in your description that the song fades before the album version. The longer version/album cut has as the cops fade the gun shots ringing out showing he goes down in a blaze of gun fire to not go back to jail. Otherwise, nice to hear this version again! Thanks for posting.

I always liked this song. This is the "safe" version where the police tell him that to put his hands up. The "controversial" version has the guy gunned down by the police with no singing going on. I prefer the latter (despite it being pretty much the same song) though I would imagine that this version was played on most radio stations back then.
