like any new parent, you get to use "sleep deprivation" as an excuse for any bad decision -
Mmmm I gotta use that one!
Congrats on your son, forget about the bad investments, you have a son, that is worth way more.
Good on you for owning up to these failures. It helps to see that even the best in the business lose money and make mistakes sometimes.
Remind me never to bitch about buying $1 bin book for $5! 😮
This is why I only buy comics for my personal collection. I would get ulcers from worrying about trying to flip a book.
Same
It seems like the entire comics reseller business model is based off the nearly arbitrary difference between a CGC 9.6 and 9.8. Like all profits depend on a coin flip of a CGC reviewers mood. Wild. Why do comics buyers put such value in a 9.8 when even the pros can’t tell the difference from a 9.6?
I’m good with anything over 9.0. That’s just me. I collect for the characters and stories, not speculating.
@@kma6881 i’m with you, buddy. I’m happy with anything that looks nice and clean but I can still actually read without causing it to plummet in value
I thought I made some bad moves in 2024 and I think I will make a video of it as well LOL. If you want to chat on your next deal I am free and it would be a great honour since I am a big fan of MINT HUNTER COMICS! Over all I am doing pretty good!
Hate to hear about those losses -- we've all had them. But kudos for the well-produced video with zooms, sounds effects, creative imagery, and eye-catching graphics. The video was 14 minutes long, but I can only imagine how much ACTUAL time it took to produce, Great content for the channel, even if it did involve some misses. Would love to see a video of your biggest gains so far. Nice job.
Always good to point out the blunders on the positives. Nobody's perfect, but its a good warning that even our gut can lie to us.
Love the candor and humility here. I bought two copies of the Spiderman El Meurto when I heard about the Bad Bunny news. $90 each I think. Big mistake.
My biggest loss this year was My Witching Hour #1 ...not high grade maybe a 6.0. Paid $120 for it. Mailman dropped it off on the wrong side of our fence. My puppy drug it around the yard and completely destroyed it. We Take Our Hits Minty the Clown!!
Being a new parent sounds scary, but not as scary as the comic book losses. YIKES!
10:05……I knew this one was coming. Man, that’s so tough. Hope a “Biggest wins of 2024!” video is in the works. And love the dedication to your boy at the end. Hang in there!👍
I appreciate you being real and honest with these videos. I've made buying mistakes. Congrats again on your child. We had our daughter come unexpectedly. She wasn't planned and it's definitely changed our finances. It's definitely not cheap having a kid at the hospital. Good news is all those comic losses go on a balance sheet and lessen your tax burden.
Best. Video. Yet. So funny. You have a new tag line! “Don’t F-…like I did”
This is why I rarely bother with grading anymore, I'd rather sell a raw book I cleaned & pressed for more than I paid than get it graded after a clean & press -- only to have it come back under value. Lots of grade values for encapsulated books are nowhere near the equivalent raw grade value, & way more people buy raw anyway.
I'd rather sell 10 $10 raw books in a day than wait a week for a $100 graded book to sell 🤷🏻
I agree with everything you said. Graded books past 1979 need to get a 9.6 or better to sell close to FMV. That's a huge risk. A good clean and press on any non graded book will sell
As long as the wins outnumber these mistakes (and outvalue them) and you don’t continue to make the same errors, you’ll be fine. Lesson here is definitely no big risks on iffy books (Conan 23 and first brother voodoo, while keys, are iffy books to be cautious with) and never ever ever ever trade a grail like tmnt for anything unless it’s older stuff
Congrats on the addition to the family. I think we’ve all taken a hit or two. Good luck going forward
Love this video. Makes me feel better about my own mistakes since I’m not alone lol.
This is why you don't buy for investment purposes.
I mean or you don't pay near FMV looking for a pop or think a clean and press will bump you into profit. I have a 120k (according to a silly FMV valuation from CLZ) after spending only 20k to procure the books. I realize pulling out 60k after grading and fees is about the most I can hope for but that's good profit destroying dollar bins. Patience and a system pay off if you put a little time into research and searching. Of course I am not factoring in time spent on the hunt as it's my zen place and often worked into weekends and vacations. Cheers
For the month of October you should do all your videos as Minty the clown. It would be Minty Halloween month. The build up to October 31 could be Minty giving away a comic book for 🎃👻
Bro YES
@@MintHunterComics Thank you 😀
Yeah, I heard that minty the clown and laughed out loud. That was great!
@@MintHunterComics I feel like Minty listens to ICP while reading Harley Quinn.
😂YES!
Holy Crap! That’s definitely a high medical bill. Hopefully the rest of the year will be filled with huge successes.
Don’t ever get a 4-day induction. That’s all I have to say
Yeah, selling mtg, video games, and comic books... I've learned that comics are the hardest to sell
I love this video. Definitely a cautionary tale and a show of humility. Keep up the good work.
good rule of thumb with characters like madam web, if the comic fans don't care about them then movie fans probably won't either, so the books don't usually see a price bump.
Thank you for this. I feel like my $200 loss is not as bad!
I can't wait to see how many other comic youtubers will use the "I'm a dumb clown" pic in their videos 🙂
This was educational and good content! You can feel your passion for the hobby in your videos. I have wondered about something for a long time though, your knowledge base on keys is incredible. It's literally better than key collector! How do you do this? Thanks again for more great comic content!
That TMNT is a real kick in the balls!
Thanks for your honesty! I appreciate you pulling the curtain back.
Keep the chin up, and thanks for the tips! I'm sure the last 'investment' will be the best one in the long run.
My biggest fail was seeing a ufo4 reprint on auction thinking it was an original i put a high bid of $300 i won the 20 dollar reprint. Biggest goof i ever made
Hey man. Nowhere to go from here, but up!
If it’s any consolation these videos are enjoyable bc it’s shows you are a real person just like us and not every investment pays off. Maybe consider holding long term on some books. It isn’t a loss until you sell.
Love the hair, great look! To your point, for me it was Ultimate Fallout #4. Got a 9.6 for at peak market value, sold it at a loss. Now I could get a 9.8 for the same price. Bad move on my part.
You should wait for the trailer for Red Sonja to launch and that Conan 23 will probably go up.
I love my beat up books, I don't usually invest in big books. But I can't deny how beautiful a 9.6 Strange Tales #169 is. Absolutely amazing cover art.
I've learned so much from you, thank you for your videos and congratulations on the birth of your son
A lot of those were just bad luck and anyone would have done the same thing. Thank you for sharing!
Oof, rough video. But hey lessons learned and I’m sure you’ll make it all back!
I won’t, and that’s okay!!!
Thanks for sharing!
Congratulations 🍾 on your Baby Boy. I wonder will he be a Marvel or DC fan. Great video
4.15 reminds me of Ricky Stanicky (air dicking). Sorry dude - only joking. My mind is always in the gutter 😂😂
Just for giggles, I looked up ANAD X-Men # 101, and the current FMV for a raw 9.4 is only $500. Even a 9.9 appears to be worth $650. I'm guessing this was a case of being in such a rush to get the deal that you didn't double check your price guide before buying it, and that's happened to every one of us at one point or another. When collectors discuss the dangers of FOMO, one thing they rarely talk about is how many mistakes get made as a result of sticker shock; i.e. - the seller or the shop offers up such a big discount that your eyes become fixated on the price tag instead of the book itself. You take the book home thinking you made out like a bandit because it was 50% off, but then when you actually look at the book itself it's got a rip on the back cover or a coupon was cut out of one of the pages or there's writing on it that you missed. While that isn't what happened to you, per se, sticker shock often makes you forget to do things you would normally do before buying a comic, like inspect the insides or look up the FMV. I'm sure there are hundreds of collectors who thought for sure they were getting a hell of a deal on Moon Knight Vol. I # 1 because they were so enamored by the deal that they forgot to look up the FMV to see how badly it's plummeted since it's previous highs.
It’s unbelievable the way that Blossom seller left your skull on the pavement!
There are a lot of eBay buyers who treat the platform, like a $1 item garage sale. Some I truly believe engage the seller seeking insane (30%-50%) discounts, free shipping, etc. They refuse to commit by using the MAKE OFFER BUTTON because that would commit them to the purchase. Instead, against your instructions, they inundate you with messaging. I have finally put my foot down on this behaviour. I still answer sincere questions about the product and shipping. But I refuse to discuss the price. We sellers do our best to be honest and respectful, but it has to be a two-way relationship.
For anyone else who was curious the Conan book sold for $685. Ouch.
Great final tips at the end. That’s a nice way to summarize this!
I dont lose money on any of my books.. im a collector.
If you're a collector, that's all you're doing. It's a total loss until it sells
@Forever_Endeavor If you look at your collection from a financ8al perspective, sure.. but I guess you could say that about literally anything you purchase, but do not sell.
xmen 101 price has been going up... at least in the 6.0-8.5 graded ones. These have gone up like $100
thank you so much for sharing this!
I feel you Minty. I bought way too many copies of Amazing Spider-Man #298 and #316 for too much this year lol and cant sell them
Reminds Me of selling my Wonder Woman and Sensation 1s for My Daughters birth. It was worth it !!!!!
Congrats on your son...just got my number 2 granddaughter...feel the same way
Ouch, these losses hurt my feelings.
No matter what logistics may indicate, you never crack a 9.6/9.8. The odds of keeping or getting that bump is microscopic and usually a waste of time, I would love to see you top 10 Financial Gains of 2024.
It was actually almost always guaranteed it'd stay the same as long as you sent it still in the slab to CGC and remembered to select "PRESS"
Now? nothings the same
My bad this year was that I had infamous ironman listed at FMV for years on my ebay store. Once prices went up last week someone snagged it for way less than the going rate.
James, I really appreciate the transparency. Keep up the great work and congrats on the growing family! Cheers!
You could save a lot of money cleaning and pressing yourself. It's extremely easy to do and the supplies you'll need will pay for themselves after 15 books or so.
James does have his own press and a couple of clean & pressing videos on his channel. My guess is that it's more about saving time than saving money, as he deals in way too many books to clean and press every single one himself when he also has to put all the legwork into buying and selling them himself.
TIME.
I'm sorry for your losses, but I bet this video will perform well because you dressed up and we always love comic collecting trainwreck videos. Also you seemed hyped and quite entertaining.
Yes short selling is a huge problem in most markets. We are in an economic depression, with stagflation. Also our culture has turned owning books in general to be a financial loss, even if we use our gained wisdom from them because the national problems are beyond our control.
Honestly you don't seem that upset about taking such a financial bath -- or perhaps you've just let go of it for mental health reasons. I've promised myself that I will never spend massive amounts for a comic book, nor take speculative risks on them. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!
First time viewer, impressed by your honestly. I'll subscribe and enjoy past and future vids.
Oh wow that's awesome thank you! Currently putting together a list of my best "wins" of 2024!
Minty The Clown: love it. Looking forward to Minty's own UA-cam channel.
The one thing I can tell you as a long time successful ebay seller and dealer with collectibles... stop giving free shipping. Over the year it is costing you tends of thousands of dollar, I know buyers feel entitled to get free shipping, but the post office doesn't care and there is no free shipping days. So don't be shy about charging for shipping.
If you offer free shipping you are probably raising the cost of your item to off balance the extra cost. I do feel I get more sales charging people for shipping and having lower prices. Just my experience. Anytime I buy sometime on Ebay and it has free shipping I have to start doing math in my head, it can turn off buyers for sure.
Modern ratio variants are not, and will never be the answer. Like Akbar said "It's a trap!" Great video BTW.
I wouldn’t buy any comic books right now we are in very obvious down cycle in the economy job loss numbers going up it’s going to get worse before it gets better. I’m on the sidelines making my list waiting to scoop up big deals on my favourite books.
this is why I only collect and not sell. Maybe my kids will sell after I die in 40+ years, or maybe their kids will sell. Im in it for the fun of collecting these books
Cgc got it in for you mate. Treating you like a casino gambler. And you keep comming back for regrades and re cleaning. Also how much you make from youtube must help a little right. I'm always curious as to how people can spend a few thousand casual per month on comics in apparently normal job's. I might spend 50 to 60 a week on modern comics if it's a good week
Ouch.
Don't feel bad....I got back a tales to astonish (first leader) from grading. Missing pages. 0.5 grade. Book looked like an 8.5 and I was afraid to open it. Got taken for 300 off ebay.
Yeah dude anytime you buy a old book you have to count the pages and look for restoration, anything fishy. Sometimes I get lazy and forget.
I'm not going to go completely on another "Slabs suck" rant. I have been buying them myself lately. But I will say that they appear to be tanking hard. At the moment. The CGC scandal brought some light to it when it turned out people were popping slabs and changing books. But the slack way of grading that is coming to light is putting a hurt on the slab industry in general. I won't say it won't come back strong. But right now, raw is doing better than slabs. Maybe hold onto them slabs for a bit and see if they bounce back. Not a good time to sell.
I feel your pain and misery loves company. Thanks for sharing, it makes me feels a little bit better about the "loser" I paid for. But what gets me is #1! I feel for my American cousins that have to pay (wtf?!) for the birth of their child. I hope there's a discount for twins or triplets!
just look forward plenty days of the year left to get some good investment books!!!!!!
Funnyass video... Appreciate the honestly.
I have sent many books to be graded over the years to CBCS.
I’ve never had anything come back lower than 9.4.
I had an ultimate fallout 4 first print that had never been taken out of the plastic casing since I got it.
I sent it off thinking it was definitely coming back a 9.8 maybe a 9.6 at worse.
It came back at 9.0. There were various issues with the back cover, apparently that I still can’t even see.
So I’m looking to sell it now because I am so mad I can’t even look at it 😄
That book needs to be pressed after you take it out the polybag. Crack it out the case. Send it off to CGC for a press and grading. It will probably get the 9.8.
200 hundred copies? TWO HUNDRED FREAKING COPIES of 4F unlimited 1???? Broooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨
Lol! I bought one of your FF Unlimited #1 9.8's (Newsie) in hopes that the game will boost its value significantly...in the immortal words of Obi-Wan, "who's more the fool, the fool or the fool who follows" 😁
the ones sold at the claim sales were part of the 30 or 40 that were ACTUALLY minties! so those are the nice ones - the NON-minties went to the shop at just $3 a piece (and one dude bought 'em all for an extra 20 percent off)
How did your presser crack a signature series book and keep the yellow label?
Hahahahaa, I purchased Spidey #210 on the stand and still own it. So I lost nothing. I did own at one time Strange tails #169 though and just before it blew up, I sold it for about $40 so regrets regrets regrets!
I hope the rest of the year goes well for you bro
modern comics are not a good investment. they drop as soon as people realize no one wants them. examples stranger things, dr aphra's 1st app, young avengers. and never trust movie hype
Congrats on your son 😊
I have about 50 long boxes of junk books I think I need to get rid of in storage a little bit of everything what should I do with them... I have to go on the road I'm a truck driver for 3 weeks if you have any suggestions let me know I need the space...
Man I've been listening to your video's for a few days now. I am definitely going to take some losses on the slabs I bought. One of your videos I made several of the mistakes you warned of. My first slab I ever got was a red label 9.2 Star Wars # 1. I traded that for a quarter oz o weed in like 2005. So it was damn near free, but I paid 325 for 4.5 Marvel spotlight 28 on a whatnot auction during the boom. I'd be lucky to get 100.
more cow bell
James, after watching this video....stay away from high risk books! Keep to the cheap stuff. Sounds like you're loosing a boat load of money. At least tone it back with this stuff. Congrats on the birth of your son! You're blessed! Plus, now you can create a comic called "Son of Mint-Hunter"!
Nothing compared to buying in 2021. I'm selling stuff on ebay at a loss. I'm not a big money player, it's just worth it to go for some books I really want that are relatively cheap.
Sorry about madame web but, the intrest was the movie and like Mobious and Kraven people will be very disappointed.
Ouch! I never congratulated you on your son, Congrats!
Thank you!
Ultimate fallout #4 I paid 1300$ at the beginning of 2024. Lost so far 400$ 😢since then.
bought a nice copy of spidey 210 for $55 like 3 years ago. Just sold it on ebay for $20 lol oh yeah
Interesting; so neither you nor your presser noticed any color touch on that Archie book, but CGC got it? Did you see it afterwards? I ask because I'm in a similar boat; I have a Batman 121 that I've owned for 30 years; CGC says it was color-touched, but I have yet to see it too.
Nope - neither of us caught it. Not to mention the book looked perfect so the 8.0 was very surprising as well
I agree. I'd like to know the science they're using to detect color touch. 🤔🤔🧐🧐🧐
@@nokautu7914 Probably run a UV light over it.
@richardolney1822 Not all color touch shows up under UV.
Now I feel like a 🤡 . Sold always in the time😢
We have all lost an "investment" somewhere along the way. Early into the "invest into graded comics phase" I overpaid for a few decent grades, like X-Men 266, until a bunch of the same started popping up. Needless to say I still wouldn't recover even today. The only investment for me is with the first appearance of miles Morales because the younger generation digs him.
Bruhhhh 😢
However, that was a great video!
Funniest and saddest video EVER!
I'm so sorry for your losses, video was tough to watch...especially that TMNT
Sorry for all your loses but, this was a great and informative video. I'm not a risk taker when it comes to my books and this video confirmed my fears. I have a question for you. Do signature series books sell well???? I don't even look at signed books. I have what would be considered a great collection (full runs of multiple titles minus FF). I would never get a grail book signed. I personally feel that lowers the value of a grail. I might consider getting a second copy of a cover I really like (non grail) and get that signed. I know you haven't sold it yet but I would hang onto the X-Men #101. That book always bounces back. Blue Chip keys are always the way to go.
Who didn’t lose a lose money in comics? Everyone got hit and shouldn’t point fingers.
Very true
@Mint-Hunter Comics. I forgot what is a good app to use for cataloging my comics? I use I collect eveything on my phone so far and am closing in on 3800 comics. I also have a MacBook Air.
28K to have a baby in the states? WTF lol...
