Red, Purple & Pink. They are beautiful. We are moving to Florida next year and I want to take it with me. So excited to see how it does in Florida. I Love all my flowers 💐🌸🌼🌺💐🌹🌷🌻

I do the same but exclude the ‘pot’. I put a small popsicle stick as a marker. I just dig it up he next year, I also prefer not using a pot as I have had one variety root much quicker than expected and it would have been root bound. After many years I am still learning as Clematis is an enigma. No pattern to success or failure. A fun challenge to grow and propagate.

I have one I am trying to root in the ground right now to dig up later. Thank you for including your tips, You are so correct there is no one way as there is so many variables but plants are much tougher than many realize and it is just plain fun to play around with propagation.
I absolutely love my clematis I have 6 or 7 different plants. I tried following another video using the rooting with a cut of the clematis stem. It was doing great and I screwed up. It died after 3 months. I know exactly what I did wrong. Now seeing this method I'll have to try. The issue is it's September so I'll have to try this indoors. Thanks for the video. Now I have a new way to go about making more.
You can easily do this now even though it is September, it won't hurt to try and it will overwinter just fine.

Excellent method that I've used for many years. It usually takes longer for roots to form, but it's almost 100% successful. Just remember to keep the everything watered while you're waiting for new roots to form. I usually give this method about a year to work its magic, but I had a rhododendron take 7 years to finally root successfully. Just be patient.
This one rooted within the year but I agree, sometimes it can take longer and much depends upon the variety and your garden conditions.

@@nicolemiller7022 I checked the clematis I wanted to clone and found two plants already rooted that I wasn't even aware of. Side-shoots must have been touching the soil and are very well established on their own. No bothering with hormones or toothpicks or pine needles. Just let nature run its course.
Thank you for the information. Spring is always busy and a few years ago, I didn't get my clematis pruned as early as I should have. There were leaves on some of the vines that I trimmed and as I was just going to dispose of them, I put a couple in dirt and was pleasantly surprised when one of them rooted and grew. I didn't know about splitting them. Will try some more.
How fun is that. I once tossed a rose trimming into a compost pile and it rooted. I was glad is did as the mother plant died that same year.

I’m going to try this when my clematis gets a little bigger next year. I just planted a rooted cutting from Lowes 3 months ago and it grew up my trellis and bloomed beautifully, besides the black spots that wilted some of the leaves 💔
I was trying to separate some of the mew grow that had blooms and I accidentally snapped off a piece of the new growth, so I quickly sprayed the plant with fungicide and took the broken piece into the basement and cut the bloom head off and some of the leaves. I have if soaking in asprin water now and I’ll plant it in a bit. I ran out of hormone when I dug up my lilac and brought it to my mew house, so I’m hoping the asprin works and the cutting will grow roots. These are my favorite flowers and i would love to add another on the other side of my trellis.

I keep them well watered, clematis like the water anyways, in general. Not waterlogged but damp and cool

Glad to help. I have tried water and rooting cuttings in potting soil but those did not work for me either. But this worked so easy. It does take patience but well worth it.

Some gardeners will recommend planting a rose busch beside the clematis to shade the roots they say the rose busch and clematis go good togather.
Yes, they do take the same conditions and are a great pair.

Ive done this method with hydrangeas before . For some reason my spiera want to do this on its own alot which can get annoying. I gurantee you I can walk out to my 5 spiera shrubs right now and all of them will have a least one rooted limb at the bottom. If left unattanded it will kind look bad with 2 clumps growing together. Usually the main plant will start not looking as good and its because they are competing with each other
Yes, this air layering works on many shrubs and plants. Isn't nature grand? But, of course, it means if you don't want it to happen we have to keep up with garden maintenance. I know some consider that work but I love to be out in the garden and it is pure pleasure for me.
I had a few clematis fail. I thought it was the many many grubs in the soil that killed them ?? Maybe I just didn't wait long enough? Or perhaps there was insufficient sun as they were mainly under a large magnolia tree that did receive sunshine but I cannot say how many hours ?? I do have a lovely one that has bloomed for many years - I don't know which it is - it has gorgeous light purple approx 3 1/2 inch flowers and blooms in early spring in SW Pennsylvania! 😊
They do like direct sun. I have one too that gets too much shade and it hasn't bloomed for a few years. I need to transplant it to a new spot, so thanks for the reminder! I could've been the grubs, they can do a number on the plants by chewing on roots. I have one that is failing right now and it is directly next to another that is doing great, so it is a mystery to me.

Ok I have questions. I randomly bought a beautiful president clematis 2 years ago, I thought it died over winter, I had it inside because it was just beautiful. Well it came back last year, I've been watering it etc but I think it's gone gone now. Anyway I bought another yesterday that I am hoping I can get cuttings off so... Do you know about how long it takes for it to root the way you did in this video? Could I just take a cutting and plant it like I have other plants? Which would you think would be quicker and easiest? I thought the president clematis was like an annual, but it came back so it must not have been an annual correct? Thank so much
Clematis need the deep cold of winter to thrive. Having it inside defeated that and didn't allow it to go into dormancy. Plant it out in the garden and let it grow, it will come back every year to give you beautiful blooms. I have tried it both ways and the layering method is faster for me but it takes all summer for it to root. Clematis are perennials. Why do you plant in a pot instead of the ground? Do you, after it roots, replant in the ground?
You certainly can do it straight into the ground. I do it in the pots so it is already potted. Totally optional though. I may plant it along a fence in my Secret Garden or give it to someone, not sure yet.

This won't sap any energy off the plant nor hinder flower production at all so go ahead and give it a whirl.

May I ask what is the name of the clematis in your first photo? I have one too but don't know the name
I do believe this one is Bees Jubilee but Nelly Moser is very similar too.
Once you have roots on multiple sections, can you clip them from the original plant and replant the original? I'm redesigning my garden and I don't want to lose all my runners, but I want to move the large, original plant over several feet. Will that work to keep both sections alive?
Yes, you can clip them from the mother plant and pot them up on their own. I have moved a few clematis and they have done just fine. Just dig deep and do late winter/early spring.
What is the liquid you poor on the sliced part with pine needle? You said it too fast, I can not understand it. Thanks, pretty nice video.
It is a rooting hormone, it comes in liquid or powder form. I put a link to what I use in the description box.

When is the best time to take cutting please
I have had little success in rooting from cuttings and find the layering to be faster for me, but Empress of Dirt has a great article on Propagating from Cuttings here: empressofdirt.net/grow-clematis-cuttings/
What time of year does this need to be done?
I like to start in Spring whenever there is a fresh long new shoot. But I can do it anytime I have a long clematis vine on into Fall as I let them stay this way over winter and look for new growth the following Spring.
I know this is 4 yrs later but did your layerings root?
Oh yes, and I gave away 4 new plants.
Can this technique be done with other plants....grapes?
I know it can be done with wisteria, roses and some other plants but I have not tried grapes, though I don't see why not. Give it a whirl and let us know how it works.

Sure, you just lose this years blooms.
What kind of rooting hormone did you use?
I used a liquid but now I found Hormex 8 that was recommended to my by a rose grower and I am really liking it. I have used several. There should be a link in the blog post that is listed in the description box. I do test out different ones so I am not sure off hand which one I used in this video.

Your soil needs help
I don't know what you are seeing that has you forming this opinion but this soil is fantastic here. We had a rabbit hutch located above this patch for a few years and this spot is filled with earthworms and night crawlers. Everything planted in this spot flourishes and takes off. All that rabbit doo has done its job well!
