I grew in Tucson in the 60s and 70s. Great video. Two things I miss in Tucson are the desert and the summer storms. I'm reminded of those days watching your video. Thanks for sharing!
In the 80s and early 90 we would get lots of rain at least every afternoon. Once every 10 years storms got so bad we couldn't leave Tucson because roads and bridges were washed out from the rain. I miss those days we really need the rain.
I lived in Phoenix for 10 years in the 80's and would always storm chasing in monsoon season. Some of those storm were incredible huge and severe. I saw 2 storms from 2 different directions head towards each other and collide. I saw a plane heading west and I could hear his engine revving up and the plane was literally stationary in the sky. The winds kept it from moving. He finally drifted sideways to get away from the head winds. But to see a plane just sitting in the sky stationary was awesome.
I remember that 2 years ago we didn’t get a lot of rain in Tucson but lemme tell you this, this is the wettest monsoon I’ve ever experienced in my life of over 21 years living here! Very incredible and phenomenal! ❤
I live in the NW side of Tucson and this storm was one of the scariest I have been through in a while, if ever. Even experienced some hurricanes in Florida and the aftermath in town is reminiscent of one. It is interesting to see the perspective from the outside looking in, but I can assure everyone that this was not fun to experience as a resident. Trees and saguaros toppled everywhere, roofs and fences damaged, severe vegetation damage from the severe wind then the pounding sharp (not round!) hail. When the storm passed, people were walking around in a daze, trying to assess the damage and start to clean up. Our power was out for 6 hours. We were lucky because it had cooled down enough to deal with it until midnight, but with temps still in the 90's well into the night, having no A/C is very challenging and some residents did not get power back until the next day. The sound of chainsaws has been prominent all week and it's been tough to find contractors, roofers and yard cleanup folks. I never want to go through that again! Thank you for showing us how powerful these storms can be.
We live off of La Cholla and Wetmore and got hammered by this storm. My little neighborhood lost 8 trees, with many others losing limbs. One of the trees landed on a car. We also had multiple skylights blown out. We have had a few roofers come through and it looks like quite a few homes had significant damage and need new roofs. The insurance adjuster is coming next week, so we will see how much they will cover. Our power didn't come back until 6 am. Very uncomfortable evening. It was definitely one of the scarier storms I have experienced.

I was in this storm! I was driving into Tucson from California for a conference and we ended up getting the whole experience of this storm. Started getting the alerts for the dust stom around 6 and by 6:30 the freeway was basically stopped and we were getting pounded by rain and wind with a tornado warning. Probably the craziest storm I’ve ever been in
I went to graduate school at the U of A in the early 1980s and I remember the summers of '83 and '84 seemed to have a monsoon every day---with spectacular lightning displays. In October of '83, it rained so much that Tucson flooded, and the Rillito River washed out bridges---particularly the First Ave. bridge. Buildings fell into the river, and it made the national news broadcasts.
So I was coming back from Santa Fe to Tucson on Sunday and managed to drive right into the storm, just before 6 PM. It was sunny in Oro Valley, a bit cloudy at Ina & Oracle. I got a few drops when I turned on 1st ave from Ina. But after Orange Grove it went from reasonable rain to the most intense storm I've ever been in. I couldn't see past the hood of my car, with sheets of rain blasting down. Fortunately traffic was light so I poked along before finding a parking lot to wait for the worst to pass. Power was out at my house for about 3 hours, but thankfully no damage (unlike some of my friends who got hailed on). Great video! That truly was a storm to remember.
Great video!!! Tucsonan here and I film the same right from my balcony looking south from Swan & Sunrise by the Catalinas. Love it!!! One thunder clap was so loud and sharp it shook my building and the rest rolled in like gigantic boulders headed right for us. I've been here 35 years and it never gets old! Bring it on!
Wow, we're really having a good monsoon this year! Been here since mid '70's and it's just like what I remember (except there seemed to be more lightening and thunder here in Tucson proper)! Thanks for showing that haboob and downdrafts, quite spectacular (and dangerous)!

Mike, thanks for sharing this video. Apparently, I just missed you on A-Mountain. I departed before the deluge over Tucson. I was out in front of it in Marana looking back. I missed all the driving in the downburst, hail, and more. We heard about it but now I know what I missed :) We ended up staying in front of it all the way to Vekol Rd. As usual, you got some great moments :)

Hi there Mike. I love the audio quality of your videos. Being totally blind all my life is sometimes a blessing, especially since I've survived two tornadoes with my family. Still, I've been fascinated by storms, and when I heard a segment of Weather Gone Viral featuring your footage and interview, I found the music accompanies some of your videos is right on parr with what simply has to be some of the most vivid footage out there as they described it. I have to admit that at first, I felt that the music sometimes interfered with the music of the storm, but I recently got a pair of Bose Ultra Quiet Comfort headphones along with Dolby Atmos for headphones, and they did the trick as far as being able to mentally simulate some of the footage the announcer and you described and that you also discussed in one of your videos. The man you've commissioned to write the music for your videos really has a gift of enhancing the audiovisual experience in such a way as to putting me into the thrill of the chase and the storms. No wonder you love it so much! Keep up the great work!

When you’re looking at these amazing monsoon clouds, picture them as columns going up 10’s of the thousands of feet. The darkness of the bases depends on the amount of clouds between them and the sun. The darker, the taller the column. if there’s hail, the cloud is reaching up to a freezing height.
Awesome stuff!!! Man up here in Vegas in NV, at the end of the vid, that lightning, I haven’t seen a storm with that kind of lightning since 7/25/21. Looked like a dang supercell!
Dustnado huh? 🤔 Now I know what hit me in my tent on the Alvord Desert (OR) a few years back. High verticle gusts with lots & lots of fine dust off the playa. It was a struggle. 😆 Your work is always incredible sir.
Man, im jealous of the monsoon playground in which you reside! Recently discovered your channel and love the work man! Im a las vegas based photographer and its always a tease during monsoon. The mountains here always push everything out for the most part.
I was in the storm during that time in the West, the power went out and my place is the only building in the West that was out while half of Tucson (South ig) is out.
I remember when I was a kid in the late 70s, we got caught in a storm in Avondale or Litchfield Park...back when that was all farmland...and it was furiously raining mud. The windshield wipers would just smear it on the glass.
my wife drove through the worst of this storm on her way to work in her Jetta, I was about 10 minutes behind her in our excursion to bear witness to the destruction. From our perspective we really got hit out of nowhere and really didn't expect the storm to be so bad. On the Eastside it went from calm and sunny to really freaking windy to massive downpour in about 15 minutes
Nice footage! I'm in North Tucson close to Oro Valley and this was one of the craziest storms ive seen. The wind and hail was going crazy, I thought my windows were gonna get smashed
i recall many times seeing waterfalls coming down on Mummy Mtn in PV, where i grew up back in the late 60’s-70’s when the massive monsoons would roll into the Valley.. all the growth, asphalt, concrete and population uptick since then, have altered our storms.. that was a good one you caught here though, for sure!
@@MikeOlbinski my family home was on the eastern facing scoop looking out towards 4 Peaks… so i am unfamiliar with the western side.. yes, it’s a super great mountain.. as a child thru tween years, i scampered for decades all over it … the whole mountain then was almost zero homes …now of course, ravaged by so many deplorably unattractive, behemoth hometels and all security guarded😤 but what a great playground it was for me back in the day.. .. i miss it very much to this day; Camelback and the Papagos are completely EPIC too.. don’t know much about Squaw Peek though.. didn’t ever climb there..
Great footage! We were seeing a movie at the (remnants of the) Foothills Mall during the storm. I'm glad that we were there, because my 8yo stepson is already scared enough when it comes to storms. So he didn't need to witness the sheer chaos that must have happened at our home in real time. The dogs witnessed it (from inside) and they were NOT happy lol Anyways, they turned the movie off and turned the house lights up as some type of severe weather protocol. We could hear some very creepy noises from inside the theater, but I believed it was just a problem with our theater's projector. So I thought the sounds were the rumbles from other theaters. This was right before any of the emergency alerts came through. 8yo asked if we could go look outside, because he was sure it was due to a storm. I said okay, because I was sure it WASN'T 😂 _Oops_ The employees were holding the lobby doors shut because the wind had blown then open. And a bunch of people were looking out the windows bewildered. This little adventure, intended to reassure this child, actually faced us with the worst storm I've ever seen in Arizona. It looked a lot more like the storms that I used to see when I lived in Northeast Texas. 8yo looked out the window and said "WOW! It looks like a hurricane!" (it did lol). "Is it snowi... OMG that branch just flew off that tree!!" I said "No that's hail. And let's go back in the theater. Remember that it's not a good idea to be too close to windows during strong storms!" He asked to check the radar on the way back to the theater. And boy, if that wasn't the NASTIEST looking radar I've ever seen in Arizona. I was hoping that it was only chaotic in our little area, as is often the case with SoAz storms. But, no, it again looked more like something I would expect to see just outside of Dallas. The movie was back on (they left the house lights up though, just in case) when we got back. Which helped mask the emergency alert bombardment. Which was helpful, because the emergency alert sound that winds up being a cacophony on all of the different devices around him is part of why he's so afraid of storms. The tornado alert, due to radar detected rotation was the hot topic. But the flash flood and 80mph straight line winds alerts were actually more interesting. Because they included the relatively rare _This is a life threatening situation_ designation at the top of the message. The tornado warning did not. I wanted to rush home to be with my dogs, but that designation kept my ass firmly planted in my movie theater seat 😂 Because I knew that the ripped off tree limb that we saw wasn't just a fluke and the flash flood warning wasn't just for washes and underpasses. This sounded the kind of flash flooding that would occur in unexpected areas, like the frontage road off of the 10. My mom is from the Gulf Coast of East Texas. So she has plenty of experience with both supercells and hurricanes. She loves to tell the story of when a tornado ripped the roof off while my grandpa was taking a bath. He was apparently very embarrassed to be caught in such a vulnerable and nude situation while the roof blew away 😂 She said that those winds were scaring the shit out of her. She, my dad, and the dogs all went and sat in the hallway for a good while. But, on the plus side, my dad was delighted with the fact that he got to test out his brand new solar panel batteries!
I was just there yesterday, I used to work at C3 call center and I stopped to see what had changed. Now it's just Borders Books and that movie theater! But there is a lot of construction out back...
Great chase! I like the way your 4-Runner sounds 🤓! It sounded like an old muscle car opening it's four barrel carb! We had a really cool show on the evening of the 14th up in Chino Valley. Bolts just flying across the sky five to six miles long! With thunder that lasted forever! Thanks Mike!
You got me with the sound effects for the 4Runner, my enthusiast ear was like turbo what?? Lol. I lived in Phoenix for 11 years, very dangerous stretch of road down there near Picacho Peak, lots of fatal wrecks when those storms happen. Glad you made it though ok. Great shots as always, looking forward to the next "Monsoon" video!
In my neck of the woods, Tucson Estates, the big storm action was on the 11th. I came out of it with a bit of rolled roof peeling, but some carports were smashed.
@@MikeOlbinski we're alright, lost power for 4 hours which wasn't great as I own reptiles but thankfully this happened in the summer so them getting too cold wasn't an issue.

I have lived in Tucson since 1975 and have never seen a haboob here. This is in Casa Grande, they get these along with Phoenix. We have too many mountains around Tucson for them too develop.
I sheltered in my car in a parking lot on the NW side and watched trees get knocked over. One fell on a car. Halfway through, like a hurricane, the wind shifted 180 degrees and proceeded to lift the tree back off the car and fell it in the opposite direction. It was an awesome sight to see.
Also, drove through one of these 2 years ago. It was terrifying! I love storms but this one freaked me out and made me more apprehensive of future ones. Like a dummy, I had no idea what different types of storms looked like. The sky above was like a swirling black evil smoke and to the sides it was green. I started driving through these powerful dust devils, completely unaware they were actually tiny tornadoes lol. The hail, large debris, and the river I was trapped in was so scary. I was trying to get to high ground but had to confront the flood head on to get there. Please people, if the sky is a big black cloud or green to the sides, DON'T DRIVE. Even if you gotta get to work. Just wait it out. If your boss has a problem with that, fuck em. Your life is more important.
Well, if you go watch my Monsoon films you'll know why. I'm trying to get footage of them, so getting back out in front allows me to shoot more time-lapse.

TVs take up so much room that it seems a shame to not display something beautiful on them, but full speed can be distractingly fast-paced in that scenario. Thanks for considering! Great work!
Just a few days prior to this, our power was knocked out for some hours due to damage from another storm. I was just praying during this day that we didn’t have a repeat of it, lol.
a man is missing in west phoenix... they are saying a freaking recovery up next... after 1 day of searching the collapsed warehouse. the microburst wind 77mph. in the 80's they would searched until it was done!

Great video. More trees were downed in Tucson than in 20 years an arborist said. We lost tons of Mesquites and Palo Verde trees. That storm went on for 2 hours it seemed. Eastside didn't get the bad winds, luckily like the west side did. Great video-we are there with you!
First off--Please, a lot slower with the sweeps and zooms in and out, you're not getting your points across. 2nd--I lived in Tucson near Sabino canyon for many years and loved this weather in the summers there, although it wasn't always "fun" getting caught during a long bicycle ride 20 or 30 miles from home with no shelter . Thanks for your channel.

I saw two storms combine like that over Tucson in 1983 and create a huge storm that just parked there and flooded everything out.

My flight from LAX to Tucson was diverted to Phoenix because of this storm. It was amazing from the air.

At that circle k on Congress and i-10 around the 5.50 mark, one of those canopy's fell over. Worst storm I've ever been in since living in Tucson

So that storm, I was in the Walmart on cortaro and the i10, we had a tornado touch down in that area, it was insane to see

Dustnado huh? 🤔 Now I know what hit me in my tent on the Alvord Desert (OR) a few years back. High verticle gusts with lots & lots of fine dust off the playa. It was a struggle. 😆

Man, im jealous of the monsoon playground in which you reside! Recently discovered your channel and love the work man! Im a las vegas based photographer and its always a tease during monsoon. The mountains here always push everything out for the most part.
You've had some decent storms this year, but I'm sure it can be frustrating
I was in the storm during that time in the West, the power went out and my place is the only building in the West that was out while half of Tucson (South ig) is out.

I remember when I was a kid in the late 70s, we got caught in a storm in Avondale or Litchfield Park...back when that was all farmland...and it was furiously raining mud. The windshield wipers would just smear it on the glass.
Here in the Coachella Valley, we often get haboobs coming in from Arizona. Quite a sight to see, and very scary if you don't know what it is.

my wife drove through the worst of this storm on her way to work in her Jetta, I was about 10 minutes behind her in our excursion to bear witness to the destruction. From our perspective we really got hit out of nowhere and really didn't expect the storm to be so bad. On the Eastside it went from calm and sunny to really freaking windy to massive downpour in about 15 minutes
Nice footage! I'm in North Tucson close to Oro Valley and this was one of the craziest storms ive seen. The wind and hail was going crazy, I thought my windows were gonna get smashed

i recall many times seeing waterfalls coming down on Mummy Mtn in PV, where i grew up back in the late 60’s-70’s when the massive monsoons would roll into the Valley.. all the growth, asphalt, concrete and population uptick since then, have altered our storms.. that was a good one you caught here though, for sure!

yes, it’s a super great mountain.. as a child thru tween years, i scampered for decades all over it … the whole mountain then was almost zero homes …now of course, ravaged by so many deplorably unattractive, behemoth hometels and all security guarded😤
but what a great playground it was for me back in the day.. .. i miss it very much to this day; Camelback and the Papagos are completely EPIC too.. don’t know much about Squaw Peek though.. didn’t ever climb there..

I was so big it knocked out power and the UA atmo website went down temporarily, which also meant it didn't save the time lapse.

We were seeing a movie at the (remnants of the) Foothills Mall during the storm. I'm glad that we were there, because my 8yo stepson is already scared enough when it comes to storms. So he didn't need to witness the sheer chaos that must have happened at our home in real time. The dogs witnessed it (from inside) and they were NOT happy lol
Anyways, they turned the movie off and turned the house lights up as some type of severe weather protocol. We could hear some very creepy noises from inside the theater, but I believed it was just a problem with our theater's projector. So I thought the sounds were the rumbles from other theaters. This was right before any of the emergency alerts came through.
8yo asked if we could go look outside, because he was sure it was due to a storm. I said okay, because I was sure it WASN'T 😂 _Oops_
The employees were holding the lobby doors shut because the wind had blown then open. And a bunch of people were looking out the windows bewildered.
This little adventure, intended to reassure this child, actually faced us with the worst storm I've ever seen in Arizona. It looked a lot more like the storms that I used to see when I lived in Northeast Texas.
8yo looked out the window and said "WOW! It looks like a hurricane!" (it did lol). "Is it snowi... OMG that branch just flew off that tree!!" I said "No that's hail. And let's go back in the theater. Remember that it's not a good idea to be too close to windows during strong storms!"
He asked to check the radar on the way back to the theater. And boy, if that wasn't the NASTIEST looking radar I've ever seen in Arizona. I was hoping that it was only chaotic in our little area, as is often the case with SoAz storms. But, no, it again looked more like something I would expect to see just outside of Dallas.
The movie was back on (they left the house lights up though, just in case) when we got back. Which helped mask the emergency alert bombardment. Which was helpful, because the emergency alert sound that winds up being a cacophony on all of the different devices around him is part of why he's so afraid of storms.
The tornado alert, due to radar detected rotation was the hot topic. But the flash flood and 80mph straight line winds alerts were actually more interesting. Because they included the relatively rare _This is a life threatening situation_ designation at the top of the message. The tornado warning did not.
I wanted to rush home to be with my dogs, but that designation kept my ass firmly planted in my movie theater seat 😂
Because I knew that the ripped off tree limb that we saw wasn't just a fluke and the flash flood warning wasn't just for washes and underpasses. This sounded the kind of flash flooding that would occur in unexpected areas, like the frontage road off of the 10.
My mom is from the Gulf Coast of East Texas. So she has plenty of experience with both supercells and hurricanes. She loves to tell the story of when a tornado ripped the roof off while my grandpa was taking a bath. He was apparently very embarrassed to be caught in such a vulnerable and nude situation while the roof blew away 😂
She said that those winds were scaring the shit out of her. She, my dad, and the dogs all went and sat in the hallway for a good while.
But, on the plus side, my dad was delighted with the fact that he got to test out his brand new solar panel batteries!
I was just there yesterday, I used to work at C3 call center and I stopped to see what had changed.
Now it's just Borders Books and that movie theater!
But there is a lot of construction out back...

You got me with the sound effects for the 4Runner, my enthusiast ear was like turbo what?? Lol. I lived in Phoenix for 11 years, very dangerous stretch of road down there near Picacho Peak, lots of fatal wrecks when those storms happen. Glad you made it though ok. In my neck of the woods, Tucson Estates, the big storm action was on the 11th. I came out of it with a bit of rolled roof peeling, but some carports were smashed.

@@MikeOlbinski we're alright, lost power for 4 hours which wasn't great as I own reptiles but thankfully this happened in the summer so them getting too cold wasn't an issue.

@@MikeOlbinski In everything there is always one that will be nicer or worst 🤩 The point it's that it's truly typical during July. I lived in Eloy and I witnessed them and our homes get pretty dusty...
That storm did so much damage to trees and houses…also, the Circle K that you drove by during thru storm lost that whole awning over the gas pumps.
I know, was crazy to see the aftermath at the Circle K, glad I didn't hang around

I have lived in Tucson since 1975 and have never seen a haboob here. This is in Casa Grande, they get these along with Phoenix. We have too many mountains around Tucson for them too develop.

I sheltered in my car in a parking lot on the NW side and watched trees get knocked over. One fell on a car. Halfway through, like a hurricane, the wind shifted 180 degrees and proceeded to lift the tree back off the car and fell it in the opposite direction. It was an awesome sight to see.

Also, drove through one of these 2 years ago. It was terrifying! I love storms but this one freaked me out and made me more apprehensive of future ones. Like a dummy, I had no idea what different types of storms looked like. The sky above was like a swirling black evil smoke and to the sides it was green. I started driving through these powerful dust devils, completely unaware they were actually tiny tornadoes lol. The hail, large debris, and the river I was trapped in was so scary. I was trying to get to high ground but had to confront the flood head on to get there.
Please people, if the sky is a big black cloud or green to the sides, DON'T DRIVE. Even if you gotta get to work. Just wait it out. If your boss has a problem with that, fuck em. Your life is more important.
I'm trying to figure out why you ran from that dust storm. I would have rode that out. That looked pretty cool. You seem to be in a safe location

Just a few days prior to this, our power was knocked out for some hours due to damage from another storm. I was just praying during this day that we didn’t have a repeat of it, lol.
a man is missing in west phoenix... they are saying a freaking recovery up next... after 1 day of searching the collapsed warehouse. the microburst wind 77mph. in the 80's they would searched until it was done!
I saw this in person and the definition wasn't as high as it is in this video.

Great video. More trees were downed in Tucson than in 20 years an arborist said. We lost tons of Mesquites and Palo Verde trees. That storm went on for 2 hours it seemed. Eastside didn't get the bad winds, luckily like the west side did. Great video-we are there with you!

First off--Please, a lot slower with the sweeps and zooms in and out, you're not getting your points across. 2nd--I lived in Tucson near Sabino canyon for many years and loved this weather in the summers there, although it wasn't always "fun" getting caught during a long bicycle ride 20 or 30 miles from home with no shelter . Thanks for your channel.
