I have this exact thermostat in my apartment lol. It's an old building I think it's so cool but I have no idea how to work it so my apartment is always cold
A heat anticipator is an electrical resistor device mounted in the center of many older mechanical thermostats, including the familiar Honeywell dial-type thermostat. The function of the heat anticipator is to fine-tune the point at which the thermostat turns off the furnace burners
Great question! I’m now remembering that device has a switch that toggles between Heat and Cool. And I always wondered why we could only choose one at a time. And I now I think it was to keep the bill from getting too high with the HVAC always switching back and forth as the Mercury slid back and forth. So in winter you only need heat - and when the coil warms and expands enough, the mercury slides to the other side where the AC circuit is inactive until I toggle the switch from Heat to AC.
For heat and cool thermostats there’s two different switches attached to mercury bulb. If it is heat or cool only it has one switch attached. No it doesn’t run all the time. Lol
Should have left the old one up on the wall doing its job, those things are almost impossible to to kill. About the only maintenance they need is some contact cleaner every 30 years and maybe some capacitor replacement every few decades.
A competent installation would have the thermostat pull power from the furnace via the r and c terminals. Thermostat only loses power if furnace does, then at that point you won’t need the thermostat, you’ll need power
They are ingenious. The ball of mercury doesn't roll away from the contacts suddenly, so it has a built in differential. The heat may come on at 67 degrees and stay running to 70 degrees which is perfect for a boiler so it doesn't go on and off too often.
Thanks for your Video & Detailed (Easily Understood!!!) Explanation!!! I have determined my A/C is busted🤔 It’s July 1st 2022 at 11pm so? It will have to wait for Tomorrow!!! If you r a Teacher? Your Students are SOOOOOO LUCKY!! My 8th Grade Science Teacher would ‘Collect’ the Dead birds that would HABITUALLY fly to their Death (RIP 🦅 ❤️) via the main ‘ALL GLASS CORRIDOR’ & Taxidermy them🤔 (I think that’s the correct ‘Verbiage’)…..He was Nice however??? To 7th Grade Kids??? The guy was A LOT Creepy🤯 Again!! Thank You!! Have a Lovely Holiday Weekend!!!
Mine seems to off about 4 degrees. Is that normal? Also, how many wires are in this system? If I want to replace it with a Honeywell digital system, am I going to have to hire someone to add more wires?
WHAT DOES THE DIAL INSIDE DO? NOBODY MENTIONS IT! AND THATS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT.
Adjusts the baseline temperature, think of it as gross calibration.
@@allmyhobbiesareexpensive2676 Thank you.
@@NoGMOGodcan you explain further cause I still don’t understand….
@@tonyxhyon No I cant. Because I still dont understand. But my Stepdad is a general contractor, so I will just ask him.

what is that longer cycle wheel for? could you explain?

Wait, so in this design, you always have to have the HVAC on? So you're always spending money all the time? It's either one or the other, never off?

Hi ... Is there a thermostat in old absorption refrigerators? And there is mercury in thermostats
Great design! Problem with digital thermostats is they rely on a battery. Pipes can freeze when the battery fails!

The word you were looking for may have been "recoil" :)

Thank you for showing this video.
Great thanks the only one I really understand from him how does it work
I have this same thermostat. Is the wiring compatible with newer smart thermostats?
how do you test this switch with a multi meter to prove that it works
Good question. I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to that one.
Continuity test
i know im replaying late but semply u just test the wires if it connect electricity or not
thank you for the video!
My teacher brought mercury to school in the 5th grade
Here there is a video of a mercury fountain
I think its beautiful
