As a retired truck driver, those green skies and hail fire off all of the alarm bells. I've seen more than a few tornadoes to go with weather like that.
The Dykem on that 1000 grit surface looked gorgeous.
The green color of the sky was from the hail. The way the light refracts through the hail often makes the light look green or blue.

Hail and raindrops, have a tendency to refract the light. That means the light is now moving at a slightly different angle and changes color. But not only is it bent, but it is also less energetic. Moving the light, every so slightly, from one energy level down to the next. So violet light turns to blue, blue turns to indigo, and indigo turns to green.

No masterpiece would be complete without a slew of headaches and nightmares along the way. Makes the creation all the more memorable and satisfying.
I would be so curious to see someone take a laser scan of both sides of this sword and compare how close they are to being perfect mirror. I bet the precision is insanely high even though it’s all hand ground.

Kyle: It's always a better idea to use more grounds to make your coffee. Even if you don't like it super-strong, it's still better to brew it strong, and water it down afterward. A coffee ground only has so much coffee flavor in it, and after you've extracted that, it just adds more bitterness to the brew.
Personally, I use about 2oz by weight (about 12 tablespoons) per 40oz water. And I put a tiny bit of salt in the bottom of the pot; it really helps to boost the flavor.

I would guess that forging the fuller would stretch the pattern that he wanted to keep intact. For some complaining he didn't forge it in.

Mad to think that back in the day (a century or two ago), all the fuller cutting and sanding was done by hand, not to mention the other parts

They had tools designed to hammer the fuller in.
That’s not exactly accurate- two, three, four century’s ago they would have forged the fuller while forging the blade and used a stone wheel of varying grits on a hand crank or pedal assembly to grind in the edges and overall shape and whetstones for hand sanding the fuller and they forged a lot of the other parts and finished them the same way. Now a century ago we’re talking 1924 that’s Industrial Revolution and blades were being mass manufactured at this point and alot of the work was done by someone running a machine

I think an entire fuller done with that small stone tool, and leaving the rougher look, would look super cool on a sword, or maybe dagger

A sword that size coming in under 5 lbs when complete would be a dream come true.
I had to re-watch that part because I couldn't believe it was under 5 pounds before grinding. That's pretty incredible.
The Medieval broadsword averaged 2.5 - 3.5 pounds - few weighed as much as 4 pounds. Even the uncommon hand-and-a-half sword weighed less than 4.5 pounds.

@@Jason-tz7ir Of course it is, except when it's true. At least it was when I saw tornados as a kid. The sky always had a yellowish green tint and most of the time there was hail, high winds with periods of calm...

Honestly you should look for, or somehow make giant brick erasers and then shave and shape them down to the radius that you need for fuller. Or 3D print some or cast epoxy
I've seen people twist it using a simple vice and just twisting by hand

The green sky is the hail core. The tornados are usually behind that, at least here.

Makes sense on the fuller, the tape on the wheel probably made the contact spongey and made a softer edge while grinding!
I have a similar problem sanding custom architraves. I use a Festool linear sander. LS130. They are a discontinued tool but you can still find a few out there and a massive time saver. They are also variable speed.
My experience with Green sky was in Nebraska in about 1957 and a tornado in a little town (Baird) near Scotts Bluff. A tornado took out a big oak in the back yard then lifted over the 2 story house and came down in the John Deer equipment lot across the street. I was playing on the enclosed back porch and had no clue what it was, kind 'a like my whole life back then _No Clue

Great video, Thank you... working on a blade for the Viking challenge and I myself have a fuller to deal with soon... was hoping you had discovered a new magical way to breeze through it hehehe
If there is a magical way, it would be forging the shape and fuller, then using stones to do the final shaping and smoothing. But that would distort the pattern far more than using the stock removal method and probably not suitable for this collector piece.
To get a nice even sand and high grit polish I use double sided tape and tape my sand paper on to a piece of 8oz leather, the leather helps to prevent accidentally putting to much force on any specific spot.
The Griffin sword has been imbued with mystical properties, and will be worthy to accompany it's new master upon a great & noble quest.
Apparently this episode was just pure calamity. Good lord, lol.
Why not a cnc router for the fuller initial cut? Seems like it would be easier to get a good result that way but I am far from experienced in this area.
In the last video, he explained that grinding one side releases a ton of tension in the metal and actually bends the blade. Which would make it impossible to keep it flat on a CNC. Hand grinding one side at a time helps keep everything straight.

i nearly cried when u started flexing the sword, now i know its kind of a real life test but still your braver than i would have been.
lightning does indeed hit propane bottles with the results you would expect! A guy I worked with lost his house after his house was struck and the lightning decided to exit through his cooking gas bottle.

I feel like there's an intent and tradition in the stark font of the royer label on your pieces, but I was reminded of my friend's pottery work - instead of a signature or name-stamp on the ceramic pieces, he puts a symbol that represents him instead. The fun part is making the symbol, then it becomes more "forged" into the artwork of the piece, less of a contrast between the piece and the maker.
2.5 lbs seems to be about the max of long swords in museums.

6:45 I was wondering in the previous video if you could use this kinda tool to make that initial cut into the fuller so you have the "railroad track" for the grinder.

I think a gold in lay around the inner grind would look good.
Only ever done one blade with a fuller, and didn't find it to be easy at all. Part of that was down to not having a suitable small wheel on my grinder, so I was debating all sorts of options, using a steel rod and forging it in (decided against it because at the time, my one burner forge probably wouldn't have got hot enough), Scraping it in manually (decided against it because I have small skinny 'drug addict' style arms)....Eventually opted for a grinding disc on an angle grinder followed by lots of hand sanding with the paper wrapped round a section of steel rod.....It sort of worked.
Lo e this Video, and the project as well! It just came to my mind that you could use 2 different colours od masking tape for the konvexing so youcan see better when you have ground through the first one. :D btw: i am admiring your work and hoping 4o build myself a sword myself one day!

Hi Kyle.. Q.The sword being a collectors piece and not meant for battle..But if it was, Hypothetically, would the thickness between the Fuller's of 1.7mm or 70/1000, pose a problem if you were repeatedly striking hard objects like armour and other swords? Couldn't help feeling worried if I was to strike something hard that the core might twist or fold, considering the length of the blade. Loving this build btw..many thanks 👍

Weird thought for fuller sanding, a nice thin pair of gloves, with little patches of sandpaper cut out and glued to the fingertips. Different fingers for different radiuses. Just a thought lol. Something i would do 😂

is there a distal taper to the blade ? i hope you have put some in as this blade looks substantial and the flex seems like it is uniform all the way to the hilt rather than concentrated to the first two thirds . im sure you know this anyway lol

you should try using a belt cleaner on your disc sander might increase the lifespan of the sandpaper
Man... If I was on the level of Kyle, I would be flaunting my work everywhere from social media to local media to international market...and I would boast "who can beat me?" Challenge.
It astounds me that people did this work centuries ago over the course of many weeks or months with wet stones and grinding wheels.
Some still do
They used tools to hammer in the fuller before grinding and refining the fuller.
It seems like 3lb should be the finished weight of the blade with the grip and all. I bet it is going to look amazing but I suspect the dynamics might not wow the same way. Hope I am wrong.
