  • St. Ephraim offers a dynamic commentary on this famous story (Matthew 26:6-13) that the Orthodox Church reads each year on Holy Wednesday. Presenting detailed conversations between the sinful woman, the devil, Simon the Pharisee, and Christ, this homily is faithful to Scripture yet expands our understanding and experience of this most instructive example of repentance and love.

Troparion for Holy Week's Bridegroom Matins: "Behold, the Bridegroom comes at midnight, and blessed is the servant whom He shall find watching; and again unworthy is the servant whom He shall find heedless. Beware, therefore, O my soul, do not be weighed down with sleep, lest thou be given up to death, and lest thou be shut out of the Kingdom. But rouse thyself crying: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God. Through the Theotokos, have mercy on us."
    ______
    From St. Ephraim's homily:
The sinful woman answered and said to him, (even) to Satan, after his speech: "Well have you said that I go to inter the dead, one that has died to me. The sin of my thoughts has died, and I go to bury it."
Christ speaking, "The great Physician is in your house. Allow sinners to look upon Me, for their sakes have I abased Myself. I will not ascend to heaven, to the dwelling whence I came down, until I bear back the sheep that has wandered from its Father's house, and lift it up on My shoulders and bear it aloft to heaven."
Christ explaining who owes the 500 pence and who owes 50, speaking to Simon: "You are he that owes five hundred, and this woman owes fifty. Lo! I came into your house, O Simon; and water for My feet you brought not; and this woman, of whom you said that she was an harlot, one from her childhood defiled, has washed My feet with her tears, and with her hair she has wiped them. Ought I to send her away, O Simon, without receiving forgiveness? Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will write of her in the Gospel. Go, O woman, your sins are forgiven you and all your transgression is covered; henceforth and to the end of the world."

Hello. Sorry to hear that happened. I know that if you go to an Orthodox Church and ask one of the priests, you can ask them to pray for the dead. You can ask more about it to them.
Love in Christ, may God bless you and console you my dear! ❤

Yes..are you going to services at an Orthodox Church yet.? If not, get Thee there asap..(💝😏💝).
The Church has heard many confessions through these centuries. It isn't afraid of anything you might say and IT knows from where your help will come..
Jesus can forgive you and you can be relieved of the debilitations of those memories.
You will keep the memories, but as you repent of them they hurt less. You will keep the memories though to gently remind you of the debt of love you will owe Him and as a protection against returning to such behaviors..
You made an DEEPLY IMPORTANT POINT: you are grieved by these memories. Not everyone will be able to understand that. They may think your reaction is to slough them off. But, no.
The wicked woman grieved. So did St. Mary of Egypt. For 48 years (47 plus one more) after Her encounter with the Holy Cross and the Theotokos in Jerusalem..
And she is one of the greatest saints in the Church because of her repentance and love..

Repentance, humility, confession and to know that God forgives us - but the Desert Fathers teach us not to recall and dwell on our former sins. Μετάνοια! We have turned around!

I'm still a sinner ☦️ but at least I'm no longer a homeless drug addict. I'm now a wife, mother, student, and an inquirer into the Orthodox Church.
I've been clean 8 years, and inquired 3 years, and started having enough courage to attend Divine Liturgy after 2 years. Daily Evening Prayer and Morning Prayer habit for 2 years.
All to say, I've started going regularly and this Pascha is much more meaningful in the Church than watching from home.
Yesterday we all got Palm leaves before Divine Liturgy started. It was beautiful.

I lose track of if the sinful woman here is different from the woman who anoints Jesus from the alabaster jar…

    • @lindaphillips4646

I think that this sinful woman is the one who washed His feet when He was at Simon's house.
The other woman was Mary, the sister of Lazarus, who poured that expensive oil onto His head in gratefulness and utter awe at what He had done for her brother, who now sat at the table with them.
THAT scene is more amazing to me this year than ever before.
I marvel at what different insights come to each of us in this season..
We can also marvel at the hardness of Judas in the face of that miracle, but that hardness still exists.
Only on this Lazarus Saturday did i realize that the internal organs of Lazarus had started to compose, i guess.
      Because he did stink.
So it seems to me that this miracle would have included some 're-Creation', as well.
It was far more than resuscitation and returning the soul and spirit to the body.. although that was miracle 'enough'.
      Confirmed the 'universal resurrection', indeed..
      GLORY TO GOD!
      Blessed Pascha!
