My guess is that most shippings to Null Island happened a long time ago, on 1 January 1970 ...
Why 1970?

That’s when they use the British or Australian prime meridian instead

Was anyone else really worried at 1:08 of Matt accidentally dropping his book over the edge?
I always get anxious when I see someone else in a situation like that, even though I know it's probably totally fine.
I don't anxious from them though, because I make sure I'm never in those situations to begin with. ⫶P
It would have been fine; I think he has a couple of copies.
The thought did cross my mind.
Was about to comment on that. I half expected that book to end up flying into the Thames.

I develop geographical information systems for a living and I would like to make a public appeal that NULL is not coerced to 0 because it fucks up things like data validation, bounding boxes, spatial analysis, user experience, etc.
NULL island is a misnomer, it should be "Origin Island" if anything.
Ah, so *that's* where everything piped to /dev/nul goes.
A system I helped develop some years ago had its Null Island in the middle of the Pacific, 0 degrees latitude, 180 degrees east longitude. The software that determined street addresses could never decide if Null Island was part of the U.S.A. or part of Kiribati.
Does it actually matter if it's 180 degrees east or west longitude?
We started at the International Date Line and headed west. So, yeah, it mattered for us.
Audible version is available and it's read by matt. Can confirm it's worth getting
So... How many people have now requested it shipped to Null Island... And will you film it when you drop it off the boat?
i love seeing things changing their potential emergy synchronised with the standupmaths theme music

My heart was in my mouth as you waved that book over the edge of the promenade.
It would have been worthwhile if it fell in the water. Anything captured on video is marketable...
That was the Myst map on that Null Island page.
Yes! They based a lot of the fake Null Island stuff on Myst. Takes me back to the 90s and a sense of getting stuck.
@@standupmaths I'm a huge Myst fan and math fan. This makes my day!
I saw it too my 90s point and click adventure brothers!
I'm glad I wasn't the only one to spot that; slightly off-topic, but they've recently updated the entire Myst series to work on Windows 10 and MacOS 10.
@@davejones64 I'm well aware. I actually was a part of the Kickstarter and paid for the LCD linking book.
Holy smokes, I wanted to look at street view of Null Island on Google Maps... Zoomed out a lot there, and suddenly noticed that they have a proper projection now. Because HTML 5 is powerful enough to show spheres now they just show a projection of sphere onto monitor screen and then you can rotate sphere to see opposite side of the globe, rather than any of the fancy other projections. But finally you can actually accurately compare Greenland to Australia on Google Maps.
@@rich1051414 It is a projection... because map is still on your 2D screen
Except it is a projection google specifically programmed. Just because there is only one choice for projecting the image of a sphere onto a screen, does not make it any less of a projection than any of the countless other map projections. Either way, you're not looking at a sphere, you're looking at the projection of a sphere.
@@ObjectsInMotion i mean yes, that is why i said "proper projection" rather than say it in any other way. Because i consider that to be the most proper projection.
@@rich1051414 Programming 3D visualizations involves programming an explicit projection step, so you can put things onto pixels. This projections is called a "perspective projection".

Okay, I did order the book, you had me. I would have ordered "Things to do in 4th Dimension" if there was signed version on Mathsgear, now I left it from cart.
I am ordering first time things from any UA-camr, atleast this has your thought and creation, not like most are trying to sell shirts or other junk.
Overall, I do hope it's good, and greetings from Finland ;)
There is a signed option for Things to Make and Do in Fourth Dimension on Mathsgear :)
You choose the book and on the site there is a little dropdown box giving you the option to order it signed or unsigned.

Worked in a job once where I went to look up a record in a customer management system and found the customer listed as just a given name, no surname at all. I was initially surprised - I hadn't known that system was capable of accurately reflecting mononymous names!
Except when I checked the same file out in the admin system the customer system pulled data from and actual paper documents of course turned out their surname was "Null," and that somehow the customer system was interpreting the string "Null" as a null value 😱
Came home today to find my mum has suprised me and bought humble pi for me for world book day!
My order shipped yesterday! Looking forward to get my hands on the book
One of the null island representations was Myst. Love it!
Just ordered the book, so excited!!
I just finished the book Matt. Really enjoyed it.
Got my book yesterday. excited to read it. It was out for quite some time, but not really here in czech republic.
Just bought a copy! Can’t wait to read it.
Your book has made it to Alaska, hurray!
My bookshelf was in dire need of a new colorful addition! Thanks!
My book just got shipped, can't wait :)
I just got an email stating my order has been shipped! Can't wait! Also, I used to work for an internet company which ran some websites with several pins on (0, 0) on the map (dealership locations). I quit because the prgrammers didn't care.
Of course, the ridiculous thing about null island is that the data fields should never have been 0,0; if stored in e.g. SQL, they should have been null, and if stored as typical IEEE 754 floating point they should have been NaN (not a number), both indicating there is no correct numeric value.
At my work our software mostly does not differentiate between 0, null and empty string. And it's part of the legacy system. I have changed parts of it and it has not always ended well! There's technically correct, Parker correct and then business correct!
We're talking cops doing paperwork. Do you really think they're going to make such distinctions?
Jim Fortune Their system could easily have a checkbox "address unknown". They don't have to actually know the distinction between [0.0,0.0] and [NULL,NULL] themselves.

Probably like the four-corners point in the US west, where Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado all meet. The only place where you can stand in four US states simultaneously!
Cause right *at* 0º lon, 0º lat, you can be in four hemispheres simultaneously - northern, southern, eastern, and western.
However, you could also do that right *at* 180º lon, 0º lat. Unfortunately, that point is also in the middle of an ocean. :-(

In Finland the social security number has your birthday. There were no problems with that, if you just shrugh on the fact that your birthday was public knowledge, up until the refugees started to get into Finland. First were the vietnamise and the new ones are from Ukraine. I'm not complaining that but the problem rises with when they get their citizenship and thus proper social security number. The statistics based on birthdays started to skew toward 1st of January as that was the default that was assigned to anyone whose birthday was unknown. This raised problems that got the government start a reformation of the social security number and that project then noticed also the privacy issue with the birthdate. They have not yet come up with the new structure of Finnish social security number.
You're not the only one who's very wet now; what a tantalising promo video!
By the way, is the Kindle edition the only digital format currently available? I'd prefer an open format that's compatible with all kinds of apps and devices.

Anyone know what the print size is for this book? My dad would love it and has a birthday coming up. But he has trouble reading normal sized print. If anyone happens to know, please post below. Thank you!

I hate when _null_ defaults to 0, fundamentally those are very different concepts, 0 is a number, while _null_ is absence of any value.
@@00O3O1B Ignore the field, seriously it is stupid to have fields that require numbers even when those are not available. They should ask their programmers next time to properly implement null feature.
But think of the poor Null Islanders, the national crime rate shot up overnight. House prices plummeted. At least they would have, if there were any houses...
But, but, but....zero comma zero isn’t the same as NULL. Where’s my DBAs at to back me on this?
I mean, they could have called it Origin Island or something. Also, there's a wide range of things that could happen. It seems unlikely you'd store Lat/Lon in a database of user accounts. More than likely (IMNSHO) those databases are joined with another database that provides geolocation info (kinda like the DNS system) and a record for whatever location was entered simply doesn't exist. In that case, you have to return something. Sure, returning something like "No location available" might be nice, if things like map software support that. The safer option though is to return a plottable location, if not the correct location.
I’m disappointed in you! Null Island would be the perfect place for a book launch.
