This was fantastic. Thanks so much for posting it. LaBrie sounds absolutely brilliant as do (needless to say) the rest of the band. I was a little worried about him hitting the high notes but he absolutely nails it.
In fairness to JLB, when DT first hired him his voice was utterly spectacular, then with the illness and aging his vocal chords have declined. I think they need to tune down a little to accomodate his voice now, because he can't hit the high notes consistently night after night any more when touring. Petrucci can still play a million notes a second but it's different for singers as time goes on, just give the guy a hand.
Best comment ever. James used to be crazy good live, and he still sounds completely amazing in the studio - to me, anyway. And let's all remember he's 53 years old...
+Lowortix Tfw You're absolutely right. His sound is much richer. A pity they didn't manage to reproduce it on the album. He was probably the best on stage this night.
Dream Theater is a fantastic band, I haven't been following then in the last albuns but it's great to watch this video and to see the guys playing awesome as always!!
5:52 *I made a comment about a year ago about this and I have figured the whole solo out: it’s the good ole E Mixolydian scale (fits so well under the fingers)*
FANTASTIC! I Iove de simplicity of the stage...but I can't see any mics in front the guitars cabinet... Stage amps are certenly just for Add...Great! A real big show!
although many changes in his voice, i was gonna comment on how i think james still got it, but apparently people disagree. why? let's have a talk on it, would love to read some of your thoughts :)
2:53 im gonna forgive that one john, cos its the first show of the tour... the stage reminded me a lot of megadeth, and not to mention that both new albums got similar ideas and references and almost the same "spherical robots" = P
It sucks that James just can't hit those notes anymore. This is better than that performance at Waken last year, but still not very good. Check out some videos of him singing on the images and words tour, he had such a great voice then. I know Dream Theater won't replace him, but they should think about writing in a musical style that better suits his abilities now.
+Akoustic Khaos Coming from a diehard 90s Dream theater fan : Dream theater should have broke up when mike portnoy left because this mangini shit is BAD. and yes if you know anything about james laBrie his voice has been blown since 96.. thats 20 years man. hes not gonna be that great of a progressive metal soaring vocalist like he used to be. Look up Dream Theater Killing Hand Germany 93 that is one of the best bootlegs, and in the killing hand james hits a high G (a half step higher than learning to live). It is called perfect germany because the images in words tour was soooooo in thier prime. Me PERSONALLY i really love dreamtheater 94-98 because derek is my favorite keyboardist.
pls don't tell me this is their last album. here are the signs 1) songs get shorter (they are old) 2)albums get longer (finish with a "bang" 3)they're in their 40s and 50s i mean c'mon
Just imagine how much better LaBrie could potentially sound/perform if they just swallowed their pride and played the songs a few steps down; there is no shame in doing so, Rush have done this before to help Geddy keep up! It is a great idea. DT have well and truly made it, they have nothing to prove anymore, they have a massive fan base and are always a pleasure to see live...but LaBrie just can't sing comfortably in the higher ranges anymore. He can still sing, undoubtedly, but just imagine his performance if he was in a lower key. For the remainder of DT's career or to at least ensure maximum longevity of Labrie's remaining voice, they should seriously consider this option. As much as I hate to admit it, believe me I have defended LaBrie extensively in my time, he is very fucking poor these days (live). Just a thought.
+23-Infinity not sure they could do that, guitar and bass use up the whole fretboards most of their songs. Dropping the tuning would just mess up their tone.
You have a fair point but even just a step down wouldn't make any considerable difference; most of their songs are in standard E tuning, occasionally Drop D. A step down wouldn't be too demanding. WE JUST HAVE TO BELIEVE BROTHER!! Hahaha.
23-Infinity Yes a whole step would be doable. Poor Jordan would have to modulate everything :P But I agree, James can't sing this high anymore. It's perfectly understandable, he's like 50 years old.
+Pier-Luc Tardif That's how I feel man, no disrespect to James he still has arguably one of the most unique studio voices, nobody sounds quite like him, he is a perfect match for DT; it's just his live game that suffers these days...he was young and had an absolute powerhouse of a voice, but time and perhaps his vocal accident has tarnished him over the years. There's no denying that he can still sing live, he has some decent moments but the higher notes are painful to listen to in my opinion. It would be a great step towards maximising the time these guys have left in the music world!
Geor Geor At 1:24 you can hear someone saying "Classici ritardatari del cazzo", which can be roughly translated from Italian to English as "Fucking always-late people". So yeah, his friend was pissed too lol
Labrie doesn't sound as bad as I expected but the song sounds powerless since he's not hitting high notes like in the studio version. If the guy can't hit those notes then the band should modify it's music to fit his style of just fire him.
Really?? That's worst, man. That explains why the new album has so much melodic stuff in it, Labrie sounds great singing that. Anyway, a good high register was always like the main requirement to sing in DT, right?? If he can't do that, then he should quit because the band is still awesome and he's ruining it. That's my opinion.
+Trinanda Dinantio I think you overlooked a small, tiny fact: LaBrie is a singer, Portnoy a drummer. Would you be so kind to explain how a band with two drummers and no singer could fucking work?
+Trinanda Dinantio What the fuck r u talking about man? Labrie performs like a star. Mangini is the best drummer you can get nowdays. Stop mentioning Portnoy who was a background singer being drummer.
Everything was amazing until James started singing. This sucks man... he did such an amazing job on the album... is he really going to be performing like this throughout the entire tour? :/
+Fábio Dias Usually he starts to warm up after the first 2 shows and gives it his all for the DVD/Bluray. But basically yes, he doesn't try to hard anymore, because - as you can tell by the comments - the live audience still thinks THIS is ok.
+Freezing Moon Sigh - True. However for all their amazing technical prowess, of which there is no doubt, I remember when dream theater songs were truly original and actually grooved instead of seeming like long passages of bunches of random notes thrown together with spikes of occasional progressive rock cliche and rehashes of already existing Dream Theater vignettes. And throw into the mix that we now cannot understand a single word James sings live anymore.. A sad loss in my opinion. Portnoy's music contrarily since he left DT is fresh and light years ahead in sonic satisfaction, diversity, originality and sheer inventiveness. JMHO
+talobassprog last tour he was way better than here, I've seen them live on the previous tour and LaBrie actually did the job pretty well, on this however he's going flat on high notes and also you can hear by the different pronunciation of the words that he's struggling hard to get there. I hope he gets better.
I had high hopes for this but every album I hear and performance I see convinces me a little more that Portnoy's five year break would have been the right thing to do.
+sourcescience He did not want a five year break. Just a small break. He never said five years. It was admitted by him that he just wanted a small hiatus of any length.
+Alex MP didn`t want just a small break. In reality, he wanted break as long as he enjoyed to be in A7X. And this could be 6 months, or eternity. Or anything in between.
What ever you have to say about, DT... Mancini did that .... Labrie forgot that ... Petrucci missed this ...I can only say .... man ... thank Jesus I could take part ( presence ) of that live performance ... dream come true.! Ps . This band has most mathematically accurate harmony performance in the world.! Not kidding . I was there .!!!
wow the background looks amazing i will be seeing this in NYC and probably in my home in Ct if that is the case it will be my 13 and 14 time seeing them :D
Fuck, LaBrie just can't sing anymore. You can give an aged singer leeway for songs that are a decade or two old, but he can't even sing his own vocal parts which were only recorded last year.
+Former Fire First of all, the show is their big epic rock opera played in full for the first time ever. James looks and obviously is nervous as fuck!! You can really sense it. Plus on the other live videos he sounds fine :) Just the warm up ^^Plus The Gift Of Music is not even the best song on the album to begin with.
+necroplastful We all know that Labrie's voice is the only weakness of Dream Theater. He is nervous?? And what about the other members?? They've opened the show. They should be more nervous than Labrie was. I guess he hasn't improved his voice.
+Drumavarium12 Singing is a hell of a lot harder to nail live than instruments. You have to be perfect and the fact that he's singing 8 different characters over the course of 2 hours is no easy task. Any singer would be nervous as shit.
idk why i miss the simplicity of their appearance and their extraordinary musicianship. i miss the former drummer, not for the person, but the personality, the the energy, the freedom, the flow, and the soul when he played every DT song..haha
first of all, i understand they want to show off all of there new songs on there tour. but some of there new songs are kinda obscure. they should of played some of there old material on tour and play half of there new album on tour. not all of it from there new album. but im pretty excited to go see them on tour! Dream theater does not disappoint at all.
Thursday night was brilliant , Vocals were pretty spot on considering the task and it was the first night. I was sat fairly central about 10 rows back and the sound and visuals were as good as any other concert I've seen.
Oh no!! What the heck is wrong with labrie's voice!!? He sounds amazing on the album but pulls the rest of the band down here :-/ I hope it's just because this is the first gig
+Stevomyungbassfreak Judging by recordings of the first 3 shows, he's gotten a little bit better each time, I think he still has yet to learn how to handle singing this album live properly.
Man, I wish all these people with their smartphone or cameras would really stop taking movies during concerts, there are raised arms and permanent flash lights, it's really disturbing, annoying and rude both for those who came to watch the show, and those who are on stage. And seriously, look at the crappy result.
A couple of things. First, not sure what the bunny other folks are hearing, but I hear no issue with LeBrie's voice. Person's actually there have commented how great JAmes was all night, so again, not sure what others are hearing because James sounds just fine here. Second, I really wanted to see the animation being used as I heard a lot of great things about it. I know musically the boys were going to bring it hard, but really wanted to get an idea of the animation, which we did get some idea of it from the opening and the Nomacs, which I knew the Nomacs parts on the CD would be a lot more effective with the live show and that definitely looks to be the case.
I wish can interact more at the stage... Play around a bit If it was me at 04:22 i will swing around that wicked piston like a composer. Lol Needless to say. Perfect play though. Flawless victory
A reminder to you Labrie haters, If the band truly felt his voice hurt them they would of let him leave when he wanted too in the early 2000's if they truly felt his voice was killing them they would have went and found a new lead singer hell they are everywhere waiting for an opportunity
why do i read allot of bashing to DT these days?, btw the record was awesome, maybe give these guys sometime to master this song live, I believe mastering songs live has a big difference than mastering it in a studio
+elvancor any bad recording makes shit sound bad. I thought his singing was horrible during the DT12 tour but then changed my mind after listening to the DVD. I can actually hear him singing well with headphones.
This was fantastic. Thanks so much for posting it. LaBrie sounds absolutely brilliant as do (needless to say) the rest of the band. I was a little worried about him hitting the high notes but he absolutely nails it.
+John Thangaraj Thank You!
Are you deaf?
LaBrie is the man
Ugh, no he didn't, not hating but he was flat the whole time on highs
In fairness to JLB, when DT first hired him his voice was utterly spectacular, then with the illness and aging his vocal chords have declined. I think they need to tune down a little to accomodate his voice now, because he can't hit the high notes consistently night after night any more when touring. Best comment ever. James used to be crazy good live, and he still sounds completely amazing in the studio - to me, anyway. And let's all remember he's 53 years old...
Probably Mangini's drums is better here than in the album
+Lowortix Tfw You're absolutely right. His sound is much richer. A pity they didn't manage to reproduce it on the album. He was probably the best on stage this night.
+Lowortix Tfw I think the whole album translated so amazing live. I love it even more after watching it live. Especially Act II.
simply phenomenal!! DT my band..love it!!
Dream Theater is a fantastic band, I haven't been following then in the last albuns but it's great to watch this video and to see the guys playing awesome as always!!
Can't wait for the Boston show tomorrow night!
8:38
0.5 speed
manginni losses the stick
+Carlos Pereda nice catch lol
+Carlos Pereda Noticed that live :p
+Carlos Pereda well spotted because it goes very, very fast !!!
+Carlos Pereda y rudess le pega una mirada de latigazo jaja
+Carlos Pereda Jordan noticed and it made him laugh :D
5:52
*I made a comment about a year ago about this and I have figured the whole solo out: it’s the good ole E Mixolydian scale (fits so well under the fingers)*
absolutely amazingly brilliant. can't wait to see DT for the first time in Toronto, On this saturday. I love this new album, it's awesome...\m/...
the line of conduction in dystopia overture is amazing!
Fantastic, i was there,Fantastic Show!! \m/
Goosebumps all along
FANTASTIC!
I Iove de simplicity of the stage...but I can't see any mics in front the guitars cabinet... Stage amps are certenly just for Add...Great! A real big show!
lo guardo 2 volte al giorno minimo
although many changes in his voice, i was gonna comment on how i think james still got it, but apparently people disagree. why? let's have a talk on it, would love to read some of your thoughts :)
+Bjorn Ironsides I know he has good nights (maybe even most of the time?) but the performance here is just unacceptable. Almost every note is off key
whoaaaaaaa....!!!!!!!!!!
2:53 im gonna forgive that one john, cos its the first show of the tour... the stage reminded me a lot of megadeth, and not to mention that both new albums got similar ideas and references and almost the same "spherical robots" = P
+Pablo Navarro I didn't see, what are you forgiving him for?
cos he missed... that,s rare on him... : p
+Pablo Navarro Even Jesus remains human, after all !!!
Muy bueno quede impresionado con el nomac del principio. Todo de esta banda me encanta, lástima el camarógrafo debió captar el escenario entero.
It sucks that James just can't hit those notes anymore. This is better than that performance at Waken last year, but still not very good. +FearTheBlades ~I sure hope so. We'll see how he sounds in a month or so. If he doesn't sound good by then it's safe to say he won't get any better.

+spencer koeller you suck. Mangini gave a new tone to DT, Portnoy's shit was getting repetitive. Mangini's a great guy and drummer.
Dream Theater used to pay homage to the great rock band with their cover albums. Are we now going to see them cover the great musicals? :-)
pls don't tell me this is their last album. here are the signs
1) songs get shorter (they are old)
2)albums get longer (finish with a "bang"

Amen brotha
How many times did they say no filming or pictures before the show started? This is just disrespectful
No orchestra and choir on this tour? I hoped for it, pity.
Biggest pet peeve is the people who arrive late and walk in front of us.
100%!
Geor Geor At 1:24 you can hear someone saying "Classici ritardatari del cazzo", which can be roughly translated from Italian to English as "Fucking always-late people". So yeah, his friend was pissed too lol
hahaha yes thats true!))
6:10 Beware Jordan. The ground is slippery...
The Gift of Music could easily come off the scraps of 6DoIT
Mangini always 200bpm faster than the others!! Run like a crazy, nevermind we love the rest!.
Mike "The Kiosker" Mangini
LaBrie sounds like he's trying to control his high notes... But also seems a bit frustrated here.
i thought the last part of dystopian overture was played with geoshred
Labrie doesn't sound as bad as I expected but the song sounds powerless since he's not hitting high notes like in the studio version. If the guy can't hit those notes then the band should modify it's music to fit his style of just fire him.

Fantastic gig. Thanks for the video. I was somewhere to the right of you :-)
Rudess Theater
My boss
If I was there, I would surely punch the faces of these people walking in front of me!
You are absolutely right!
Grande LaBrie, sempre cantando como uma maritaca!!! hahaahahahaah
Jesus christ, LaBrie was fine until the My brother Gabriel part... My ears couldnt take it!
5:17 to 5:35. Tribute to Kansas?
that beard tho!
Ugh... did they have monitors? LaBrie is so FLAT! -.-
+Eli R I was there on that night, and trust me, he was not flat at all. The low quality recording doesn't really do him much justice.
That beard. My God, man...
i love it, but i had heard some fals voice
Falta Mike Portnoy
Mike Mangini drumming is so plain..like a pizza without any topping...unlike Mine Portnoy.. :)
Bad Music from DT in this album...i didnt hear a nice sound from every player..so i think is right that Portnoy leave this band....
it's time to kick out labrie and recruit mr.portnoy once again
+Trinanda Dinantio I think you overlooked a small, tiny fact: LaBrie is a singer, Portnoy a drummer. Would you be so kind to explain how a band with two drummers and no singer could fucking work?
+TTTIPNSO 😂😂😂😂
+TTTIPNSO hahahaha... then let portnoy replace mangini for a while and play some instrumental songs. labrie need some rest
Dat comment
+Trinanda Dinantio
What the fuck r u talking about man? Labrie performs like a star. Mangini is the best drummer you can get nowdays. Stop mentioning Portnoy who was a background singer being drummer.
james sounds horrible again...he must go.
Everything was amazing until James started singing.
This sucks man... he did such an amazing job on the album... is he really going to be performing like this throughout the entire tour? :/
+Fábio Dias Usually he starts to warm up after the first 2 shows and gives it his all for the DVD/Bluray. But basically yes, he doesn't try to hard anymore, because - as you can tell by the comments - the live audience still thinks THIS is ok.
the bald and the wigs...
Remember when Dream Theater missed a note live? Yea, me neither.
+Freezing Moon Well... James LaBrie misses almost every note nowdays... Just horrible. Maybe he should start to use autotune.
+Joel Pulkkinen He already does, in live DVDs and albums.
+Víctor Hugo Santafé Ossa They adapt their music to a live performance, therefore they improve it on spot. Scrubs doubting lord Petrucci.
JMHO
+Bob Lamper you obviously have know real musical knowledge then.
damn.. jordan's keyboard stand is getting bigger and bigger. :O
+garlicson It will become an altar someday
+garlicson is he using a pad instead of the good ol and awesome continuum? :(
+Vodrum He has a seaboard off to the left which he used at one point, plus Geoshred on the tablet which he used once. Continuum is so 2005 ;)
+Paul Huxley so 2005 but so damn awesome... i miss it hhahaha and the keytar! hahah
+garlicson Notice that the bigger it gets the smaller Petrucci's amp wall :)
yo dude edit the title : Descent of the NOMACS+Dystopian Overture+The Gift of Music.
labrie rock on!!! nice to se he is recovery his voice
+talobassprog, he's still way flat on higher notes
then you have to listen to a better life from this gig. its absolutely horrible. he sings even worser as on the last tour
+talobassprog irony right?
+wildizer nop for me is ok 30 years plus in singing is not that bad.
+talobassprog last tour he was way better than here, I've seen them live on the previous tour and LaBrie actually did the job pretty well, on this however he's going flat on high notes and also you can hear by the different pronunciation of the words that he's struggling hard to get there. I hope he gets better.
I HATE the people who ALWAYS come too late, whereever they go or are!!
+X +100000000!!!
+X Was it that bloody Axl Rose again?
+X I agreeeeeeee!!!
+X i'm always late...but my ass was on time that night!
I had high hopes for this but every album I hear and performance I see convinces me a little more that Portnoy's five year break would have been the right thing to do.
+sourcescience He did not want a five year break. Just a small break. He never said five years. It was admitted by him that he just wanted a small hiatus of any length.
Alex I know, I just said that because this would have been the first album after five years.
***** If you say so. I doubt it personally.
+Alex MP didn`t want just a small break. In reality, he wanted break as long as he enjoyed to be in A7X. And this could be 6 months, or eternity. Or anything in between.
Milos Stasko How do you know this?
The voice in the initial speech is similar to adam02's in JP parodies lol
5:52 - Jordan makes that lead sing and doesn’t stick to the original
6:03 - love this version 😮👍🏾👍🏾
What ever you have to say about, DT... Mancini did that .... Labrie forgot that ... 6:11 Jordan slips his leg.
THANKS GOD!!!
Wow, why can't Dream Theater get Mangini to sound like this in the albums?
Album is crap but at least the visual looks good...maybe my tickets won't be a total waste of money
My god James sounds awful live
+Former Fire First of all, the show is their big epic rock opera played in full for the first time ever. James looks and obviously is nervous as fuck!! You can really sense it. Labrie sings as if he has an abscess the size of a coconut.
idk why i miss the simplicity of their appearance and their extraordinary musicianship. i miss the former drummer, not for the person, but the personality, the the energy, the freedom, the flow, and the soul when he played every DT song..haha
I can't pretend LaBrie not being able to sing doesn't bother me.
first of all, i understand they want to show off all of there new songs on there tour. but some of there new songs are kinda obscure. they should of played some of there old material on tour and play half of there new album on tour. not all of it from there new album. but im pretty excited to go see them on tour! please dream theater.....remove de singer, is bad, very bad
I hope it just warmup for the next concert..
DEL PUTAS
Thursday night was brilliant , Vocals were pretty spot on considering the task and it was the first night. I was sat fairly central about 10 rows back and the sound and visuals were as good as any other concert I've seen.
Where's Jordan's Continuum? Was it not on this album and I just didn't notice?
+KommandantDahl it's now Seaboard
Mangini's kit looks more and more like a food tent. I'd stop for a snack if I were Petrucci.
God... are they exhausted! :(
Yea they truly are also the audience is not into it either
Jordan improvised more on the solo..
it happens I’m a performer

Saw them live on the astonishing tour.... fucking awesome. Went on Jordan's birthday, so at the end everybody sang to him as JM gave him a cake.
LaBrie sings very bad!

I just noticed...At 4:50 the drum beat is the exact same as in the start of SFAM's "Overture 1928" (around 0:45)...
I was there. Great show
I loved the visuals on this tour!
I wish can interact more at the stage... Play around a bit
If it was me at 04:22 i will swing around that wicked piston like a composer. Lol
Needless to say. Perfect play though. Flawless victory

tomorrow and after, if someone can upload any better video resolution (btw it's also great), I hope we can find other sense of comment :).
People still watching them through their mobile phone, even they are already in the front of the stage.
why do i read allot of bashing to DT these days?, btw the record was awesome, maybe give these guys sometime to master this song live, I believe mastering songs live has a big difference than mastering it in a studio
Ok...tomorrow Hannover Show...but THIS voice is a reason for me NOT to see the show....too bad...
I didn't realize to become the drummer of DT you had to look like John Myung.
Fucking amazing show. Watched it last night 19.02.16.
how does jordan change his patches without touching the keyboard? does he have them programed?
love the Labrie , the more your voice is horrible , in 2014 was much, much better!
Good I wish they'd fire LaBrie.
Bjorn Ironsides Many times. LaBrie has declined massively over the years.
***** No.
+Bjorn Ironsides Being there makes a difference because it's too loud for your ears to properly judge the singing. Any recording reveals the truth.
***** No.
+elvancor any bad recording makes shit sound bad. I thought his singing was horrible during the DT12 tour but then changed my mind after listening to the DVD. I can actually hear him singing well with headphones.
Oh James, James.. still love you but the years are taking it really hard on you. It's understandeble though, 30 plus years singing are not easy...!
You are only as good as your last game.
Patetic Labrie...Patetic..
what does patetic mean?
lol dat Patetic :3
I thought jordan will use his seabord for the ending of the gift of music
tut tut!!! No phones/cameras allowed haha :D What a great show man! Glad someone got some footage
That's the real GOD form of DT!! GENIUS!!
