  • I bought a Chinese indoor/outdoor air quality monitor [NEW JSM-131 CO]. It reports on: Carbon Monoxide (CO) Carbon Dioxide(CO2), Formaldehyde(HCHO), Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC), plus has an Air Quality Index summary number.
    It is powered by a Micro USB socket, I've seen it draw up to 300 mA when charging the internal battery, but once the internal battery is charged the current draw drops down to 180 mA.
    I purchased mine for $35 on Ebay, but had to wait several weeks for it to ship from China. You can also find them from Amazon ranging from $40-$60 (such as the link below).

    I too got a similar (but not exactly the sane) device, and I'm pretty sure this and all in the same price range, use faked numbers. They save on cost by only having a single sensor that provides one value, and all the other numbers are magically generated. So as in your demo, when breathing on it, all the values will move. The jumps are also unreasonably large over a short time. I did return mine as I wanted it to help ensure safety in my workshop, so not being able to rely on the numbers just wouldn't do.

      Did you end up getting anything that you would recommend?

      @George Iron I would say a cautious yes. I did purchase the type of meter below, which is significantly more costly at about $80-100. It seems to work and appears to have separate sensors for each parameter. But I say cautious because I have not opened up the unit to verify and see the physical sensors as there wasn't an easy way to do so without voiding the warranty. Also, the temp/humid values are not accurate, leading me to question the other values. But I guess it's better than nothing. This one has Wi-Fi, so it's possible to integrate into your home automation. Cheaper version is available without WiFi. Look for model DM72B exactly, with or without wifi. Any other number/letters are different variations of sensors so read descriptions carefully. a.aliexpress.com/_mt2Zpks
      The one that I would trust most though, is this one below, that costs $200 - which I have not bought. We can clearly see the sensors, and they can be replaced as needed. Functions seems very complete, and the reviews have been excellent. So if you can fork out this amount, and value the accuracy of readings, can go for this.

    Good video! Do you think 2 minutes is enough to set it up? I've heard a 30-minute period in the open air is necessary for proper calibration.

      @summetj  3 роки тому

      2 minutes is the minimum enforced by the device. I have also heard that letting it sit and stabilize and give better results. I hesitate to say calibrated because I have no idea how accurate the actual sensors are.

    Great video - thank you for sharing your experience.
    I would like to buy one of these but I am not sure if I can always leave it connected / charging via USB on the table 24/7,
    and only disconnect it when I need to use it as a portable test tool ...?
    I noted you had it connected but I am not sure if you were just charging it or you indeed leave it charging 24/7 & use as I describe -please advise. Thanks.

      Yes, you can power it with a wire 24/7. It only has a few hours of operation on the battery.

    Any Idea about the sensor that is used ? Have seen a vid about manipulated reading that was programmed into a device, not especialy this monitor.
    The kind of sensor gives a idea if it is fake or not.
    What you think about it now after several months ?

    • @summetj

      I have not (yet) taken it apart to see what is inside. I am confident that the VOC and CO2 sensors are reacting to the environment (they change in the correct direction when taken inside/outside or exposed to VOC's) but I can't say anything about their accuracy, but the monitor definitely provides a good relative measurement between two locations/times.

      @@summetj Thanks, looking at the vid shows indeed a perfect working device,but I have seen another vid from a different monitor were measurament was manipulated by a piece of software that was implemented,the poster showed also the sensor that was not able to measure c02 at all.
      Maybe I can find that vid again and post a link here.
      I am not looking for a 100% precise monitor BUT it should measure the right thing.
      EDIT: Found it this one ua-cam.com/video/APnjhMrJChI/v-deo.html

      This is a fake unit.. multiple sensors are way more expensive, than the cost of the device.

    My air detector does a quick flicker then immediately turns back off. Do you know how to fix this?

    • @summetj
      @summetj  3 роки тому

      I have never seen that behavior for mine. My guess is it may not be getting enough power from the USB cable. Try letting it charge the internal battery a while, or try a different USB power supply. But if none of that works it's probably time to send it back.

      It is certainly possible that it uses a cheap sensor to "fake" more expensive sensor readings, but the device itself exists and does react to VOC's in the air.

      @@summetj That's pretty much the only sensor in there. We have forrest fires which generate a lot of pm2.5 and pm10, if I take air from the outside the PM2.5 are about 30-40 ish with this sensor, the reality is 25.8 for the pm 2.5, how if i stop the air from outside and start the air purifier with HEPA filters, with this piece of garbage, the values won't move much, I bought a Temtop M2000C and it's night and day, the 25.8 mentionned above with that reader becomes a 3 with the air purifier only on, running for 30 minutes, with no air from outside. It basically simulates any other values, like co2. The guy from the KainkaLabs channel opened one up and describes what he sees in one of his videos. I had mine since April, and I was like, something is wrong with this thing, my airthings says something and this is completely fine, that's were I got the temtop and found out my airthings was right and this fake chinese thing was just displaying random numbers for 80$. On the bright side, even though it's been 3 months since I bought that fake thing, amazon customer service was kind enough to offer me a refund.
