To our American friends, the pilots are undoubtedly paying tribute to our beautiful former warbird and are in no way derogatory.

My Dad was an exceptional pilot. He was Vulcan XH558's first pilot in RAF service and flew her many times. He flew many other Vulcans too. B1 and B2. My childhood was unique and very noisy, with Vulcans roaring overhead.. Dad told me many stories. I'm so proud of what he achieved. 🙂

Was at the Scottish Air show Ayr. A few years ago. A Canadian Lancaster was scheduled to join the Battle of Britain flight. Bad weather scuppered that. Gutted.
XH saved the day. Flying in from the sea, I could feel her I my chest. Absolutely awesome.
Even back in the 1980s (the Vulcan retired in early-'84) the V-Bombers had a pretty good ESM suite with a dedicated operator. They'd have known the ship was there and that the F-14s were coming. Nothing wrong with playing it cool, especially over lunch. I was flying up the East Coast one time in an RAF C-130 and we were asked by ATC if we minded being Embellished (intercepted). Anything to liven things up so we agreed. Twenty minutes later a pair of Toms appears, one on each wing tip, about 10 feet separated. Lead comes on 243 and says "Want to see something you can't do?" "Sure". So they sit there, cycling the wings back and forward, perfectly synchronised, still in perfect formation. Fantastic piece of flying. "Awesome says our co-pilot. Want to see something you can't do?" A couple of minutes pass. "So are you gonna do it?" "I am doing it, I'm eating my steak!"
I heard an old story about a B52 and a F4. The F4 also boasting about being able to do something the other guys couldn't: doing acrobatics and of course challenging him to do something better. So the B52 shut down 2 of its 8 engines and jokingly telling the F4 to beat him at that game.

@@tsu8003 That was the Vulcan - apparently determined that it was flying in a manner unbecoming of a strategic bomber. The B52 display pilot that tried similar stuff managed to crash and killed his crew eventually.
I'm a Yank, but the Vulcan has long been one of my favorites for the ages, whether it's a B.1 or a B.2. Beautiful, just beautiful..... Glad we have the RAF on our side!

@@davewolfy2906 my favourite 3 jets, the F86, Hawker Hunter and the English Electric Lightning. Top 3 props the FW190, P51D Mustang and the gorgeous Spitfire.
The Vulcan performed the longest ever bombing mission in history. "Operation Black Buck" during the Falklands war in 82. The sheer planning and logistics was testament to the RAF's professionalism and ability. Makes me proud to be British 👍🇬🇧

Having seen every big US Jet in the US Inventory, in the last 45 years and the Vulcan bomber it was ONLY the Vulcan Bomber that actually got me to go outside specially to watch it. Taking off several miles away it literally shook the building I was in.
8 Vulcan bombers took part in both HUGE US air defence exercises in 1960 and 1961. Their ECM systems were so good that 7 out of the 8 got through to launch their nukes both times. Once the world had gone past the age of nuclear bombers and was into ICBMs, the Vulcans weren't kept 100% up to date.
One of them even had the temerity to land at a New York air base too, that part makes me smile every time I am reminded of it.
They were so far advanced for their time as was the handley page victor

The fact that the US believed their air defences to be 99% successful makes it all the more humbling....but then again Americans make a habit of underestimating others.
@@whiteyaksha7232 To be fair to the US (as a Yorkshireman), they have so much landmass, population and industrial base, they could afford to loose a few cities in a nuclear exchange (which was no doubt factored in to their strategy). We glass a couple of their cities on the Eastern seaboard, they glass the entirety of the UK. Luckily, the Yanks are quite friendly these days, they appear to have forgiven us for that one time we burned their capital.
My friend was a Vulcan pilot, and on an exercise bounced a US carrier and 'sunk' it, much to the fury of the Americans. He snook up on it by flying low and using an island to cover him, popped over it and there was the carrier! He got in a bit of trouble as a low-level attack was not supposed to be part of the exercise - but after the 'telling off' by his commanders was invited to sample a glass of champagne. He tells the story better than I!
Yes, the Brit officers would have taken pleasure in reminding the Americans how their carrier was sunk.
It's the tradition now called 'having the best dits', it means 'this is a story I'll tell once for all my mates to know, but I'll hope for the day I can meet a chap who served on that carrier back then.'

IFF would have told the Nimitz they were Brits, this was CIC using an opportunity to test the crews’ response. The Vulcan pilots knew and so did the bosses in the Nimitz. Good story anyway.
Great video. My late dad and i went to the royal air tattoo at RAF Fairford in ( i think?) the late 80's. The Vulcan was there, in pre-noise abatement days ( remember them?) they used to do a full blown vertical climb. The Vulcan became a barely visible dot in the sky, but the vibrations from it coming from the ground were incredible. Very happy memories.
I love the way 'shoes' manages to sum up the difference between the 'yeehaw' attitude of US military pilots, the complete sang froid of the RAF. Love 'em both!!!

as it goes into a vertical climb and the ground feels like it is moving 6 in up and down and hearing that Vulcan Howl. i have seen many different aircraft in my time in the RAF and nothing came close

The Vulcan is the loudest aircraft I've ever heard. My uncle used to work on them and we went to family day at the factory, where they always did a flypast. It was initially a Chadwick design, the man who designed the Lancaster bomber. Amazing to think Britain went from the piston driven Lancaster to that amazing delta wing jet bomber in a few short years.
Yes!! I was 4 years old at RAF Finningley in 1987. I've never heard or seen anything like it since.

Was thinking the same thing, but wondering if they fly without the radar active...it's an emitter and perhaps could be detected more easily than it can "find" something...sort of like announcing your presence ahead of time...maybe. My experience with radar being basically SFA.
@@Gippetos The Nimitz knew they were there, therefore they had radar targeted at them, the rest of the carrier fleet was probably scanning them with radar, fire control systems, etc. Unless they were asleep the Vulcan crew knew that someone with big teeth was out there.
We knew they were there, we just played with them.
I was deployed to Sicily back in the late 60s and had the joy of seeing a Vulcan shooting approaches to the base. On their last pass, they did a beautiful barrel roll as they were climbing out.

A very noisy aircraft. Was working in Leeds, West Yorkshire, heard this noise, looked out the office window and saw a Vulcan fly over the city centre towards Yeadon airport. A week or so later the RAF bombed Stanley Airfield. Never been able to find connection to the two events
@@glen1555 Find somewhere that the F-35 is flying if you want to hear a noisy aircraft. I thought the Harrier was bad until we started getting the F-35 in the pattern before I retired.
In the early 80’s a Vulcan did a display over Brands Hatch on the Sunday of the British F1 Grand Prix, the aircraft did a few low passes, a lot lower than would be aloud in today’s elf n safety. On the last pass above the grandstands, the Vulcan lifted the nose to the sky and lit the burners. The sound was fecking incredible, women and kids were screaming, the windows were shaking like speaker cones and loads of them smashed. After the Vulcan had departed everyone was just shocked by the sound and laughing at what just happened.

I'm a Lorry driver and our depot was just over the road from RAF Wittering (No.1 Squadron - The home of the Harrier)
Buggers used to hover over our depot whilst we were refuelling.

We built some damn fine aircraft in those days ✈✈.
Right after the Falklands war two Vulcans flew into Nellis AFB for a few days. The way the cockpit blister sits on top of the fuselage always makes me think that they built the aircraft, stood back and looked at it and said, "Bloody hell, we forgot to put a cockpit in it"! Anyway, one day while they were visiting there was a news story about many complaints of aircraft breaking the sound barrier right over Las Vegas early one morning. The Air Force truthfully replied that we had no aircraft in the air at that time. They just neglected to say that the Brits were up that morning.
Martin Withers has it that they also descended into and flew along the Grand Canyon, not realising it was off limits. They did the same on departure too, knowing that they'd not be coming back to get a bollocking any time soon!
@@abarratt8869 for us Nellis old-timers I think it was called the Sun 1 departure. Less impressive than you might think because the Grand Canyon is so big, but very picturesque.

Mach 0.98, Machmeter goes up to Mach 1.4. However, when testing the Blue Steel, Avro stuck a rocket motor in the tail and the Vulcan left the test article in it's exhaust. The test Blue Steel was Mach 1.2 at the time. Not recommended as the airframe was not stressed for it.@@Tipo-F120b

A WW2 Ace, a top rate test pilot, first man to break the sound barrier and an American icon. I really enjoyed reading about his life in his autobiography Yeager.

My father was a service tech for the Vulcan in 1962! You really have no idea how close to nuclear war it was during the Cuba 'crisis' - the engines were turning at the end of the runway for over 2 weeks on a 10 second call with NO RECALL. He later put one of the then new Concord engines under the centre of the Vulcan as part of the testing routine - it nearly flipped the Vulcan when they powered it up.
Just watched this whilst eating an Egg & Bacon Sandwich oh yeah, and having a cup of tea. Peace and love from the UK to my US friends.

What a truly wonderful, beautiful aeroplane, and the F-14s not too bad either. I've seen the Vulcan fly at airshows, and man the noise that thing makes is unreal, the Vulcan how they call it, it's like no other noise I've heard from an aircraft. It's a shame the last airworthy Vulcan ceased flying in 2015, would love to see it flying again!

That story was floating about in early 80s about Vulcan nuking America, we got moved surrounded by police in a Hillman avenger and a Vauxhall chevette I was 8 yrs old my dad and my uncle was clicking away with their cameras ,and I could see a land rover on the inside perimeter fence making it's way to the Emergency gate at the bottom of the runway I kept shouting we have to go we 've got to go ,before you know it I've got my dad's camera and we are walking away with a royal air force land rover with yellow markings stopped at the Emergency gate lol I was shitting bricks when we walking, in the afternoon my dad and my uncle was walking back over the fields when the above turned up ,it always sticks in my mind to this day that was the end of day waddington runway ,when waddington was on high alert during the Falklands war my uncle and dad seen the bombs being loaded.😂👍

Really miss seeing and hearing!! XH558 flying at airshows here in the uk, there is absolutely nothing else flying that looks & sounds as bloody fantastic as the avro vulcan bomber.
The few times I attended the Yeovilton Air show was the highlight for me as you saw the vulcan take off & land, man that howl, you had to hear that sound in person to understand how awesome it sounded.

Love the Sound of the Vulcan
I love the Vulcan bomber, there’s one at my local airport and I’ve been in it when I was a kid and it was one of the best days. When they used to taxi it up and down the runway you would hear it from miles away and if you was near the airport you would feel it. Such a beautiful aeroplane and the howl it makes is terrifying.
Saw the last flying Vulcan a few years back at one of her last public displays. The highlight was her doing a low pass over the runway, then standing on tail, setting off what sounded like the alarms of every attendees' parked car.
Watched the whole interview...great stuff!

@@timmason7430 The Vulcan came first. Concorde came later. Both were very advanced for their time, and both were very loud. 🙂

@@another3997 yeah, the engines for the Concorde (Bristol-Siddley/SNECMA Olympus 593 MK610 Turbojet) were actually derrived from the Vulcan B.1 Engines. Modified with an advanced air intake system and the reheat/afterburner system.

Vulcan had a pretty good ESM suite for the time. It was one of the things that were upgraded frequently during its time in the RAF, to counter the Russian SAM threat. They'd have known they were being looked at or being painted. :)
Such a fantastic and heart warming story. So glad you guys had the opportunity to exchange, enjoy each others flight prowess and continue your missions with a smile on your faces. The Tomcat has always been a fave of mine and it's great to hear a story that includes it. Likewise, the Avro Vulcan is one of the goliaths of cold war bomber history. I miss them both, F14 and the Vulcan. Still, things move on I guess. We now have the F22 and F35. Keep smiling guys, we're with you!
Of course the Vulcan crew knew you guys were there. They targeted the Nimitz in full knowledge that their presence would get a response from the ship's onboard aircraft. The fact being that the Vulcan was not presenting the ship's radar with a definitive 'echo' proves that a British Built 1940's designed Nuclear Bomber had stealth properties that still apply tom this day. The egg sandwich reference was the Vulcan crew's way of saying "what kept you?"

There's a food / liquid heater (same as in the tanks) for each crew member in the Vulcan, so it's entirely possible!
As a Brit - I always have my Egg Sandwiches with me :-), Oh and my father was a Vulcan pilot based at RAF Waddington and RAF Akrotiri during the cold war - he even took part in about 4 Red Flag events - also flew from Goose bay in Canada.... I had a great child hood growing up on bases as a military brat....we got posted to a new location every 3 years...

That sounds like British humour to me (as a Brit). I sincerely doubt he was actually eating an egg sandwich. It was his way of saying we've been having a thoroughly boring time and that sounds like a lot more fun. Egg sandwiches are a kind of symbol of formal politeness and tedium in the UK. Along with cucumber sandwiches. What brought me here was as a kid I saw a Vulcan fly low over my town from the nearby Church Fenton air show (long since ended). What a striking machine. Thanks for the story.
I think they're aware he was making a joke, when shoes tells him "you cant make this up" I dont think he was refering to the fact that the pilot may have been eating an egg sandwich, but probably the fact that he was flying over a US aircraft carrier and completely unaware (something you dont want to do ever)
@@bobkendomowitz9534 He probably knew exactly what was infront of him, we used Vulcans for maritme reconnaissance as a secondary role once the nuclear mission passed to the RN's SSBN's. Pretty sure the Nimitz group was being probed.

@@FallenPhoenix86 well the picture shows a 27 Sqn Vulcan which was employed in the MRR role, so yeah he had already sniffed out the Nimitz battle group, recorded all the comms, and electronic signals, but the time of he alert 5 was launched he was down to recording times and weapon electronic data
The Vulcan would have known full well that two Tomcats had joined in a threesome. Their radars would have tracked them in from miles away, known full well also the position of the Nimitz below. Speaking as ex RAF, who worked on Victors.
I just read the spectre series. And i have to say. Its incredible. Although a few plot points are a bit cliche it is still fantastic

Interesting bit of trivia, Concord engineers went to Rolls Royce to source engines for their new plane, at the time the Vulcan engines were the most powerful produced but weren't quite good enough for the shiny new beauty, so they rebuilt the engines to produce double the power for Concord.
Bristol Olympus (taken over by Rolls Royce) was originally intended for the TSR2 as the primary airframe it was to fit inside.
He may have known he was possibly seconds from death, still going to finish his lunch though.
A much missed colleague used to drive Vulcans and often spoke of his time at Red Flag and otherwise flying 'against' Americans. His favourite tale was how they would sit at maximum altitude (>55,000') and taunt the Starfighters that just couldn't get up to them without a zoom climb and subsequent fall back, whilst the Vulcan just turned and jinked away. Anyway, one day they were playing this game when they suddenly became aware of an aircraft flying in close formation and easily staying with them. Peering out of the porthole, there sat an aircraft following them turn for turn. Subsequently found to be an F15 Eagle, that was the moment that my friend realised the Vulcan had just become obsolete...
i was waiting on you saying pals Vulcan climbed to it's Max CIELING OF 63,000 FT. OR THE RECORD Altitude 64,000 ft. I would have,, just to see if the F15 could have stayed with him .
Sad to say but the high-altitude role in toto became obsolete the day the first SA-2 was declared operational, and that's a way before there were Eagles.

Absolutely love the sight of 2 Tomcats take off one after the other.i can only imagine being there watching.
And, The photo gives us a clear idea how huge Tomcat is as a fighter.
There is a story about an American fighter pilot who intercepted a Russian Bear Bomber, now this happened a lot, so there was some friendly chatter, the American pilot said "Hey watch this, and did a couple of loops around the bomber." The Russian replied and said "Watch this" The American watched as the bomber continued to fly straight and level, pretty soon the Russian came back on "Well American what did you think?, The America replied " you did not do anything", the Russian replied "Sure I did, I got up , had a smoke, went to the bathroom and got a cup of coffee. Can you do that in your fighter."
I literally laughed out loud. “Egg Sandwich.”
Well, it wouldn't have been an 'Egg Sandwich', as a Brit I know that he would have been talking about a scrambled egg sandwich mixed with mayonnaise and watercress. Trust me. They don't sound great but they are popular over here.

I once worked with a chap who grew up near an RAF Vulcan base, aged around 9 he hated them because they often flew over his house when he was watching his favourite TV programme and the ECM emissions jammed his TV. He's got over it and grew to love them.
Best bomber the world has ever seen, could carry nuclear bombs and could move like a fighter jet...
Hold my Beer, the B-58 Hustler, when it was not crashing.
To be honest the B-58 looks like a fighter, the vulcan noway looked like a fighter, it could fly like a fighter, barrel roll, even before it retired it was pulling moves a moden bomber wouldn't do. I see it bank sideways allmost upside down on steep climb at an airshow.. watch some of the videos on it

The Vulcan and B-58 were used in movies but for nefarious reasons. Although the B-58 pilot in Fail Safe thought he had been given a legal order to Bomb Moscow.
@Richard Tattis US Air Force, 1960 to 1970. Ten years scaring the piss out of the Soviets that we had a fast deep penetration bomber they could not catch. And the Vulcan dropped bombs on a runway and nearly missed.
I wonder when that was, obviously sometime between Nimitz' commissioning in 1976 and the Vulcan's decommissioning in 1983 but the Vulcan's original EWC were quite formidable in its heyday - 1950s and 60s, when it could quite easily have approached a carrier group undetected.
Well, the real intent of the EW suite on Vulcan wasn't to avoid detection - as a target or jammed radar you'd know very well it was there! The point was that there'd be not a lot you could do about it, because you'd not know exactly where 'there' was, other than 'too damn close, time to start running'.
I often wonder how good, stealth-wise, an updated Vulcan would be. From the front it's got a lot of quite good shape characteristics, probably the engine inlets are the biggest problem. The side - that enormous tail would be a problem. Had we decided that a new heavy long range strategic bomber (a.k.a. let's be able to do Black Buck, but more easily this time!), a Vulcan 3 would probably have been pretty awesome and difficult to pick up.
Talking about "knowing it's there, but not where", one thing I'd picked up was how much the SAM site crews in Red Flag liked the Vulcan. They'd be out there in the desert, manning the "enemy" SAM radar, in the pitch black, everything deathly quiet. Then they could hear the Vulcan coming - in the distance, howling in the night as it manoeuvred, but so low it'd not be seen on the radar set. And then, all of a sudden, 70tons of delta wing and bombs would scream past 2ft above your head at 600mph and roar off into the night, pulling a cloud of dust, spiders, and freshly trimmed shrubbery along behind it. Apparently, that was quite life affirming!

I was onboard Nimitz at the time, the shipboard closed circuit TV played Bond movies non stop, day and night. They were very popular with the crew. I remember when this happened!
You know your a savage when your wallpaper is a massive F-14 but really the tomcat pilots just seen like a whole a different breed of pilot

Egg sandwich is called a "banjo" in UK as when you eat it the yolk squeezes out on your shirt and you try and stop it with hand movements like you were strumming a Banjo.
Incidentally a tomcat couldn't shoot down a Vulcan. Vulcans were solid with a little bit for the pilots to eat egg sandwich
Egg sandwich is a boiled egg chopped up with mayonnaise, egg banjo is a fried egg sandwich, hopefully with the yolk hard.
