Great video! I’m a retired illustrator and I’ve used similar techniques. The perfect paper is Fabriano Studio Hot Press watercolor paper. It’s 140 lb and 25% cotton. It is perfect for marker and watercolor and is very affordable.
I don’t use color tube paints. The water color I use is called Neocolor 2. It’s a watercolor crayon that I break off and melt into my pallet box. The main skintone that I use is called Salmon. I left a link in the description for it. Thank you!
Kia ora James from Aotearoa New Zealand, very grateful for your very thoughtful tutorials, passion and talent. Perfect timing for me to learn about this technique. All the very best, cheers and tables, John Mc.
I didn’t have any highlights on this drawing in the video, but if you want highlights, then don’t paint the area where you want the highlight to be. Just let the white paper shine through. Thank you!
Nice , a soft look . Have you ever used soft pastel chalk ? I'm glad you say some caricatures are better than other's. Because I do some I really like and others I think are just not so good. Thank you James . By Will
Hello, Newbie here... Would it harm the painting in any way if you dried it with a hair dryer? I would think it would be quicker drying. Great Video. SUB/LIKE/SHARE/COMMENT/JOIN/THX.
I think by the time you got the hairdryer and plugged it in the drawing would already be dry. It probably takes less than a minute to dry. But it takes a little longer for the paper to straighten back out. Thanks for the question!
Muy buen tutorial, gracias, James.... Ahhh !! Te dejé una caricatura tuya en Messenger, JAvier Holgueras.... No sé si la viste... Bueno, te saludo atentamente. Javier Holgueras, desde las Palmas de Gran Canaria..

I’m just learning watercolor but was told cold press is the best way to go. Are you suggesting hot press for mixed media like this video?
Thank you! I need to try that paper
Can. you share what color tube paints you use for water color skin tones?

I don’t use pastel or chalk when coloring Caricatures live, because it smears. Thank you!
