People make lot of mistakes if it comes to HF receive and rigs, most HF Transceivers will receive the same these day's also the old Kenwood -TS-50-140-430-440 up to the 890 and 990 or Icom-Yaesu-Alinco etc etc receive the same stations. (some what less or more selective and some less or more problemes whit strong signals or very busy band whit contesting) Only game changer was DSP in the "90 but it will not help to receive more stations, CW can make a difference whit filters but Phone talk moah. Only difference most operators notice is sound quality from the HF transceivers that mostly comes out of a build in speaker or a external speaker that can make huge difference for your ears. SDR or SDR Hibryd like Yaesu FT 991- 10-1200 and other brands is nothing more the adding a display and software driven menu and parameters for radio settings and look bling bling. But say's nothing about sound quality what your hear or is way better then the old HF radio's, mostly older rigs are better quality build for life time and easy to repair or give it service after a long period of time. But nice to see this video and there is not really huge difference in receive sensivity both Yaesu's receive the same stations like most other HF rigs will do.
...Im hearing you about the old rigs, I love my old TS520..use it with a Datong FL3 audio filter and for cw it's a pleasure to use, the newer Radios bring digital noise reduction and audio peaking to the table..the ft-891 can dig out weak cw signals that the old 520 struggles to hear, this can be a game changer for amateurs living in high rf noise environments, it's not a silver bullet for the problem but it helps enormously...I am an old radio fan.. But what changed around my area was the way Internet is delivered into houses.. Vdsl on the streets around here is invasive at shortwave.. You need all the help you can get!! 😄
Thank you for doing the test - it would be cool to record both internally and transfer the files so we can compare the actual sound and not microphone that pics up both - it is not ideal for us to hear the differences. I don't know why no one is doing it direct line out or file from the radio- but if you do it you will get a lot more views :)
All in all there isn't a whole lot of difference but in person some are pretty noticeable.. Main difference between the two are the speakers and volume. The ftdx10 is much louder and less muffled than the three 991a.. On the 991a I have to turn the volume up about half way to get it as loud as the ftdx10 at about 1/4 volume.... The filters in the ftdx10 work just a bit better to clear weak stations like the DNR..i hardly use it on the 991a cause it is just too aggressive on really weak stations and creates a lot of inner water sound.. The ftdx10 dnr is really clear in comparison.. but I haven't had a station yet I couldn't bring out on the 991a and understand what they're saying by using other methods.
I think you made up my mind. Think it will be 991a that I will be ordering. Should suit me just fine.
Hello. If you want to use the DNR on Yaesu FT991 / A you have to go to 9 at least, below 9 the DNR makes an unpleasant noise

Whats the detailed differences between the 2 radios ? Is it just that the 991a does 2m and 70cm ? ftdx10 goes to 70mhz and 991a only goes to 50mhz ?

@@AK4PJOn the 991a, you’ve got to turn the DNR up to 9 to get away from the strange water sound. Once you turn it to 9 it works really well!!!!
