    Just going over some older reviews. This is one of the most memorable for me. Just bought the 18 year old myself and now you've challenged me to get the Gordon & MacPhail. Life good when you love the things you do!! Thanks again!!

    Ralfy is not only an amazing reviewer, but any amazing person altogether. When I first found the Ralfystuff channel, I couldn't stand the taste of whisky period, now, I look forward to the quiet and relaxing weekend moment when I can kick back with a dram of some good single malt and listen to Ralfy do his thing.

    No Caol ila here, but i did add some highland park 12 to my bunnahabhain 12 to get some smoke in there, and it is not because i miss smoking, but is because i really like scotch with a bit of smoke note to it. i really appreciate learning here that 1st fill can diminish peatiness moreso than 2nd/3rd fill. It's so great to learn more and more about scotch, beyond the scotch that Ralfy reviews, in each and every video he uploads. Tkx Ralfy!

    Just discovered Single Malts on a recent trip to Scotland, during a tasting at Tallisker on Skye. I found I appreciate those from Islay best. Caol Ila 12 being my first purchased. Wonderfully complex is whiskey. I discovered your reviews last evening and want to thank you Ralfy for furthering my education on all things regarding whiskey!

      Surprise, surprise! The web site they had Caol Ila 18 - no other details. I get to the store and there's none on the shelf. They go out back and return with a case. They give me one and I pay for it and go home. Then I see it is cask strength and then I see it's the 2017 version of the Un-Peated Caol Ila. Still good but not what I was expecting.

    A number of years ago I compared the Caol Ila 12 YO with the 18 YO side by side and concluded that I preferred the more briny/peaty 12 YO. The 18 YO had the same character profile but brininess was more subdued and the sweet citrus lemon more pronounced. There was also a lot more honey sweetness in the 18 YO.As I said, it's been some time since I tried the 18 YO and it's time to give it another try. On the other hand, the purchase of a Cask Strength independant bottling sounds tempting as well.

    I've done my own blending for awhile,sometimes just to save space with the not- so nice malts, and have come up with some pretty good results. about two years ago i started taking a half a dram of every bottle i opened and putting them in a bottle, it now has about 30 different malts mulling about. someday i might have my own century malt, if i live long enough.

    ralfy i recently stumbled upon your whisky reviews around 3/4 months ago. I have to say i am hooked on your videos and find myself watching them in my spare time. While i disagree with you on some taste notes on the vast majority i agree with you and deeply respect your reviews and opinions. Now i have a question for you i have seen your videos explaining some whiskey on a budget ect ect (my opinion is 20cl bottles are wonderful on a budget but not enough companies sell them) but please could you explain where you find bargains and how a whisky auction works and where to find them i would much appreciate this. Thank you ralfy for your service to the whisky community keep up the good work :)

  • @MrKapeji
    @MrKapeji 9 років тому

    Interesting, I have always enjoyed blending different malts together and recently made a fine discovery, I had bought a bottle of Glenfarclas 105 as previously I had very much enjoyed a Ralphy recommended Glenfarclas 15 yr old, the 105 though, while still having the characteristics of the previous bottle, seemed younger and more brittle in taste (105 being NAS anyway)
    So I tried it with a couple of others and it sort of worked, but lastly, I had a little Old Pultney left, adding about a third as much again of the OP to the 105 and leaving it for 15 minutes was a revelation, the slight saltiness of the OP not only brought the full flavour of the 105 out, it's own 12yr old influence greatly mellowed the cask strength 105's brittle flavour and brought it back into the classic Speyside caramel family of flavours, a little water sweetened the experience further still. A great Vid Ralphy, it was great to watch, and you who started me on the blending some time back when you suggested adding a drop or two of Ardbeg to a mediocre whiskey to lift it's spirits, advice I have followed on several occasions, mediocre or not, to great effect as well.
    Cheers!

      +MrKapeji Good stuff. Just wanted to mention that 105 wasn't always and still may not be NAS. All I have ever seen is 10yo. That info is just hidden on the back label. Ralfy discovered this after also saying it was NAS in review 508.

      Hi conradbw, I had a look all over the bottle and the box, but I could find no reference to any age, so maybe it is now NAS. Thanks for the comment! :)

    Ralfy, whats your comments on the fact 'single malt' whisky has only been marketed as such in the last 40 odd years? As i understand previous to this blends were the norm and before Irish pot still was the preferred by those in the know. Is it that since then 'single malt' as a style has been prefected or that its been raised above its quarter? I'm sure you've touched on this before, just wanted to get your opinion.

    Hey Ralfy, I heard you say "as soon as I had my first bad bowmore ...a 12 year old" ... could you explain what that means? I had a bottle of 12 year old and loved it at first, but after the first half or so of the bottle it started tasting really bad. I thaught it was my palate which had changed or something, would be good to know if its possible that it was the bowmore that decided to alter its taste....Apart from that nice video, I would like to get this 18 year old but since its rather expensive I want to try the distillers edition first :D

      +DA oliHVAR Watch a couple of Ralfy's older video's about where to start you whisky education. I believe he usually says a Glenfiddich/Glenlivet 12 yo, a Genmorangie Original (10yo) and an Old Pulteney 12 yo among others. These are good value for money beginning options.Until you know if you like peated whisky I wouldn't go buying a bottle. Try someone else's first. :-)

    12:53 Isn't that what the distilleries do themselves when they produce good NAS whisky ? And doesn't that therefore somewhat justify doing it to an extent ?

    • @lolpopcorn1000
      @lolpopcorn1000 9 років тому

      +Soteriologe - As I understand it, that is what distilleries generally do whether the age is stated or not. NAS just means the distillery (for whatever reason) does not want to reveal the age of the whisky. If the whisky has an age statement, that age statement indicates the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle. For example, Ralfy's blend would be considered a 15 year old despite the fact that most of the whisky in the glass was 18 years old.

    I get mixed reactions when I tell people about my home blending experiments. Some are horrified, some just think it's a cool idea and others want to know more about how I decide what will be blended and how I come about with the proportions. I have a good sized inventory but blending makes it virtually unlimited.

    Mixing a 100$ bottle is ok when you spend so much, have so many bottles as you do Ralfy, but I think the average drinker with her much smaller collection cannot afford that. Not everybody has a youtube channel with 500+ review and million viewers. If I have an expectional bottle I'll enjoy it to remember it as it is. Maybe when I have a 10th of your experience I will feel bored and like experimenting mixing. Maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for the very interesting review.
