Summit Broken Top, Oregon

- In this video we go to the summit of Broken Top. This is a 9,177 foot peak in the cascades. It is right by the Three Sisters. This is one of the more difficult summit climbs I have done. I would say this is similar in difficulty to Mount Thielsen. It is a hike until the final part with a 20 foot vertical climb. The climbing knots used here were a prusik to go up, and an autoblock to rappel. Thanks to the climbing crew that went with me. Bunch of great people and wilderness lovers.

I have to admit that my fear of heights (especially on the way down) made me a bit queasy watching this, but the views were magnifico! Thanks!
Thank you. That catwalk is no joke.
Whew, the catwalk had me holding my breath. Magnificent view though. The gear you used to climb/descend was interesting and glad you explained the purpose. Thanks for showing us a beautiful part of Oregon. Your state has some much to see and do.
Thank you very much for this comment. I was just camping there! Didn't climb as I had the babies with me. I was drooling at that summit though its a fun one. I am glad this 5 year old video is still providing some value.
Appreciate it, well done. Very colorful rock formations and excellent explanations on everything. Thanks a lot for an enjoyable adventure.🙏😎👍🏻🌲🌲
Thank you Jeffrey. Felt great to finally get on top of this one. Next video I will be going up the Middle Sister.
Oh man love that ridge walk in the intro! Such a beautiful mountain in the Cascades! Need to add this place to the list!
Thanks dude. I highly recommend this one. Hit me up if ya need a guide/partner!
@@MattCookOregon thanks! If we make it there I'll let you know...awesome recoomendation!
I got chased off Broken Top twenty years ago today by lightning. I got hit just down from the top rope section. Wild to see footage of the area up close.
Thats funny I was camping there as a very little kid about 20 years ago with some lightning. Laying in a sleeping bag I could feel the ground shaking. That was freaky.
This was an amazing video. Broken Top has been on my list for a while. Thanks for this video. Its inspiring.
Thank you very much. We must have some similar lists.
I just got home from trying to summit broken top. Before I could reach the top ridge, it started snowing VERY hard. Fun nonetheless.
Nice. I don't like climbing with bad weather. Too unsafe for me. The in-between of dry and snow covered ground is sketchy. I was just at Thielsen and it was too much snow but also not enough.
@@MattCookOregon There were a couple times where I got a little panicky because it got very windy and snowy but it was awesome. Worth the views and serenity of the snowy mountains. Definitely gonna hike earlier in the day though. It started getting real dark when I was like 30 minutes from my car.
awesome climb! I am looking to do the climb this summer mid way through the broken top loop trail. I like how you did this video showing the map and trail heads. That auto block looks like its a bit too close to your belay device on the rappel though. I would have put an extension on the belay device to get it further out and away from the block with a dynema sling. if the auto block hits the belay device it will (or can) allow the rope to freely flow through which would be a problem in a fall where your brake hand cant hold the rope or auto block. Not telling you what to do, just something to consider in the future.
Makes sense to me. Thanks for the tip Ben.
awesome.
I have an oil painting of sisters.....
Really? By who? Check this out, my wife painted Broken Top earlier this year:

Matt.Cook.Oregon .
Interesting, i hiked to the lake up there from 3 creeks lake, weird to see it from this side
Thats a long hike! I only go from that way if I am going to North or Middle.
I love how you make it feel like you are there in this video. Awesome work man. Did you use a GoPro? if so, what kind and was that filmed in 4k? Looked really crisp!
Thanks dudes. I got the hero6 recently. Love it! Can't beat a new camera sensor. My computer can't handle the 4k 60fps, so I am not using that until i build a new one. This was shot in the standard 1080p 60fps.
wow its been awhile since if commented also bad wild fires in oregon
Yep we are on fire dude stay safe. I recorded a video summiting Mcgloughlin. Still need to edit.
wow awesome guess you have more spare time huh good luck editing
My friend and I are doing this hike next Saturday, but we don’t have any ropes. Do you think it’s too dangerous to go without?
Nice! Wish I was too. That depends on the climber. I would free climb it but I been up a lot of mountains. You could go to the wall and decide there. That is only 50 or so feet under the summit so still an adventure.
Amazing! Thanks for taking me along! Amazing! I said that again didn’t I. I shared this on Twitter. More people need to see this!
Whoops sometimes comments slip through the cracks. Thank you so much for sharing!
beautiful, looks like an old volcano that blew its top
Thanks. Aww you reminded me. I forgot to do any geology or history! Kinda a rushed video.
GREAT VIDEO!!!!!! I didn't puke as you approached the summit, but came close! WOW!!! Thanks,
I am glad you kept it all in = )
I know how nauseating first person gopro footage can be. Especially with heights added.
im thinking of going on south sister with my son i like watching this its interesting and helpful
Awesome. That will be fun. The Broken Top summit seems a lot quicker of a walk than South Sister. It just has that vertical climb at the top.
Ever done Mount McLoughlin? I was thinking of doing a video on that one.
never done mount Mcloughlin heard of it tho
That is a stunning opener! Great drone shot! Good to go with a group that knows what's going on...check! I would have been terrified. Above the clouds...I like it. Bless you! ;-) I didn't expect the rock to be so red. Definitely worth the climb for the view and the accomplishment. You shared the climbing info well, Matt. Very interesting. Thanks for creating and sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it Happy Trails. I got another mountain coming up next, Middle Sister. That one I do alone.
This is super beautiful ty for taking us with you 🤗💖
Any time! Thanks.
Another superb video👍I will hike mostly anything but the technical climbing not so much.Did I hear you sneezing on the catwalk?😵Thanks for the great share.
Thanks! LOL yes I guess I did there. Funny I usually go to mountains to get away from allergies too.
Wow, this is amazing! I love the view from the top, especially the walking-on-a-cliff part. I want to visit that area sometime and climb South Sister. Excellent video!
Thanks fellow Oregonian. Yeah that cliff part was called the catwalk. I read about it a lot before. Once I got to it, it wasn't all that scary. South Sister is great, I have done it many times. I have meant to do a video at South Sister but haven't had time yet.
Awesome - great job!!! Love this, Matt! You always do a wonderful job with your videos!
Thank you very much.
Certainly is advantageous to go with experienced people. At my age and limited physical abilities, I really appreciate your videos all the more because I'd not be able to do this climb myself. Thank you. And, thanks to your climbing friends.
Yes it is. Especially if first time summit of a mountain. Some of the people on this trip had just graduated climbing school so they were newer than I.
Breathtakingly amazing. It truly does not get any better than that. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much = )
Hello Matt
Do you think it’s possible to add protection along the final ridge walk?
Yo. Possible but sounds like a lot of trouble. Could start a fixed rope right where our climbing anchor was. I am not sure if 1 rope would make it around the catwalk as it is long and a U shape. There are a few places you could tie into though.
just caught the tail end of another live trail cam.... those are cool!
I love doing the livestreams. Unfortunately all the best places have terrible cell signal! I am always looking for good spots that I can live stream from.
Awesome adventure and great edit. Thanks for sharing. New sub
Welcome Hiker!! Lets keep the expectations low here. I upload once a month or so. Sometimes I live stream in the woods but the signal is terrible.
awesome job brother
Thank you
Well done, Matt. This is beautiful! I'm planning to go on a solo hike to Broken Top very soon. It looks beautiful.
Nice! It is my childhood backpacking spot so lots of memories and info there. Green lakes and Todd lake trailheads are the way to go. The main trailhead takes like an hour to get through a terrible gravel road. By the way I just went up North Sister and will have a video on that later this month.
@@MattCookOregon I was wondering if my Honda CR-V could make the trek along the rough road to the main trailhead, but I keep reading about how bad the road is.. So it looks like Todd Lake might be my starting point. Seems like a long hike, but I really want to do it! I'm looking forward to your North Sister video. :)
@@OregonFamilyAdventures CRV could do it if you need to. The main trail head basically saves like 2 miles of hiking from Todd Lake.
A klemheist "knot" is a bit more directional and would help on long runs like this.We did the direct up (seen briefly in your video) and the dogpath you climbed up as the descent. The direct has a loose gigantic rock that blocks access up top so the first climber takes the risk, and it's good form for him to tie in a handhold so you don't weight the huge unstable rock. It's in your shot as you pan due north towards the sisters . Great video!
Awesome thanks man. I gotta say I have gone through climb school and many group climbs of Oregon mountains and never used a Klemheist. Sounds like a good use though, something new to learn maybe. Many knots out there to get the same job done for sure.
@@MattCookOregon I'm going back and watching this video again as I was reminded of it by a friend who hiked past broken top. Your climbing videos are freaking great!
@@silasmarner7586 Thanks! I am trying to get one of each major peak. The last 3 left are hood, washington, jefferson.
Looks like an amazing adventure, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Zoomdak. Always fun to be on top of a mountain. This one is special as I was taken there as a baby.
@@MattCookOregon That is really incredible to return knowing you've been there but with no memories.
I've been wanting to make this ascent myself. Did you hire a guide crew?
@@Zoomdak I went with a social adventure group. One person was the experienced leader who had done it many times before. Always good to go with someone who has done it before.
@@MattCookOregon ah, that is excellent!
@@Zoomdak For sure. Done any mountains to prepare for Broken top? If not I highly recommend South Sister, Diamond Peak, McLoughlin. Those are all hikes rather than a climb but still great practice.
Cheers for that footage of the wall.. ropes for sure
Couple extra pounds to reduce chances of dying. Why not!
Great video!
Thank you very much. What a great mountain!
6:27 bless you
Ha, thanks.
Captivating watching the rope work at the end of the video. I have only summited MSH in SW Washington and hiked the PCT from White Pass to the Columbia River. But now that I'm back in the PacNW, your videos are encouraging although I'm 9 years older than those previous achievements. Seems like eons ago.
Awesome. I hope you get out there. The permit system for this area is terrible. It was thought up by some wealthy people and basically pushed away the poor and we couldn't do anything about it. I climb with plenty of people double my age. Never too late.
Colors of the Rocks !! wow-o=wow
It is crazy how it looks one way from far away, then so different up close.
@ 5:49 My.Hood
@ 5:26 bless you
Yeah Mt Hood is seen very faint. We could even see Mt Adams that day.
Absolutely beautiful views.
It is so nice to look down from up there. This might be my favorite mountain.
wow that looked fun im in a hotel with my 2 sons with a view of mount rainier its a pretty good view great vid man
Thank you. This is a very special mountain as I was brought here when I was 1. Sounds like you are livin the life! My movie is 99% done just putting finishing touches on now.
awesome looking forward to see it
OMG a Matt cook video I have not watched !!
Superfan! Binging on the mountain videos I see. Awesome.
I have watch alot of your videos today yes ..lol it was Matt video days for me ..you caught me lol
