I used to use an Epson ET-2550 ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 , an early model of the ink tank style. It worked well, but had one nuisance that drove me up the wall; if you didn't put it in high quality print mode you'd get a streak across the page. I'm happy to say I have yet to see this with this printer. The print quality has been fantastic so far, the set up was super easy. All in all I'm very happy with this printer.
This worked on Brother DCP-150C. This video saved me US$22 and the hassle of bringing the printer to a service center. Thank you so much! - Cherry, Philippines
Just done this and it worked perfectly. It's the 2nd time I've had to do it so I was concerned it would'nt work but it did so many thanks. Its a great printer and been going for a very long time and really owes us nothing at his stage .
i'm an old fella of 79 with an old 115c printer with an error 46 unable to clean message.....with your help and me copying down all your instructions I cleared the error ....my old 115c prints pictures like new..............thankyou very very much.
Thank you for this advice!!! I struggled with the "unable to clean" error message for days before finding your tutorial. The instructions that were provided helped me to get my printer back on track in within minutes!!! Keep up the good work :)
First I disassembled the printer to see if any mechanical fault had occurred, but the error was still there. Then I found your video. Thank you! It worked on my DCP-115C.
Thankyou so much it worked first time on my DPC117C, I really love this little printer and it was just about to go to trash when i spotted your article while browsing for printer problems, the official Brother site suggested a maintenance job which would have cost a good few £s or at worst having to pay for a new one. Great Job done.....happy chappy Sunderland UK.
Thank you sooooo much. My MFC-5440CN didn't work with just clearing the purge. I had to clear all of the counters. It works again!!!!! Hallelujah!!!! THanks again!!!!!
Hello and thank you for sharing this video. It worked after a few trials. On my DCP-750CW, when the error 46 is displayed on the screen, I do not need to press the "OK" but start directly with "Menu". Cheers
Thank you! You saved me, also, from having to buy a new printer! Right now is NOT the time for more expenses. It was a bit tricky figuring out how to get my Brother MFC-490CW into "MAINTENANCE" mode, as none of the videos contain the exact set maneuvers that work for my model; however, I watched many videos and extracted several different ways I might find success. I was finally able to carry on with a job that I was right in the middle of printing when it happened. Next, the quality of the print was very poor, but after multiple cleanings it improved. I wish I wrote down the specific steps for successfully clearing the "Unable to Clean 46" error, as I was frustrated and moving too quickly for my memory to capture the details; I feel like I just stumbled into a combination that worked and I was so surprised that I forgot! 😄 It took me around 90 minutes + to fix it. Thanks for the leads! I am relieved to be back in working order.
just worked on my DCP-115C was on the verge of junking it when i came accross this video you have to press the up button 8 times to get to maintance and not 4 as stated in video then keep pressing mono button till you get to purge then follow rest of video now my printer is up and running as it was before yippppeeeee thanks you guys :-)
Thanks Refresh Cartridges. I have a DCP-330C, and your instruction didn't help me all the way, so I found that helped me the last way: Please carry out the following steps and check how it goes for you: 1. Press the Menu & Mono start keys ...next. press the up arrow key 4 times to make the machine enter the maintenance mode. 2. Enter 8 & 0 by using the up arrow key & SET keys. 3. Press the mono start key several times untill the purge count appears on the LCD. 4. Now, enter 2 7 8 & 3 by using the up arrow key & set keys to reset the purge count to zero. 5. Press the stop/exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode, then power off the unit, and power it back on after a couple of minutes. 6. Enter 9 twice by using the up arrow & set keys to exit from the maintenance mode, and check if the error message still persists now. Thanks to: www.justanswer.com/computer/1ybza-brother-printer-dcp-330c-printer-stating-unable-clean.html
THANKS!!! I gave it a number of other trys and your instruction is perfect and the last time I listened better and it worked!! I was aspecialy angry wiyh this Brother problem because I had a large number of new cartridges in store and they cost more than the whole printer all together. The error 46 problem is caused by the auto printheadcleaning that occurs at all times because the machine has to be plugged in to the wallsoccet at all times. Not one print made in a year? Still ink runs out!!
Thanks a lot! I have a DCP 115c and it worked a treat! The Purge counter was up in the thousands (possibly even > 10,000 I can't remember) so the slop bucket must be pretty full!!
This is the problem I had with my old MFC-3240C--not the greatest printer in the world, but a very nice little sheet-feed scanner. Now I don't have to recycle it! Win! Thank you so much! (BTW, my machine needed the work-around. Hit 'Menu' and then (quickly--it might take more than one try) *, 2, 7, 8, 3. You don't get a message that says 'maintenance' but the three function lights, 'Fax', 'Scan', and 'Copy' flash in unison. That tells you you're in maintenance mode. Then use the numeric keypad to enter the codes given here. Don't give up. You can do it.
wow! nice tuts... i solved my problem... i have two days to think and pissed me off this problem. and there is a time i feel, i need to throw my BROTHER PRINTER. because if i reset the printer before it works but now it cannot work until i watched this video and it solved my problem. now i wanna say to the owner thank you very much, i saved money to buy new one. thank you...
Thanks alot for posting this :) Now I will be able to sleep tonight. My Brother DCP-115C works perfectly again now. Before watching this I was depressed, that I would probably have to spend money on a new printer.
Brilliant! but I couldn't get to MAINTENANCE the way you suggested. Had to unplug, hold down MENU replug - ERROR46. using arrows scroll to 8 to get to MAINTENANCE scroll 0 +OK & carry on per your instructions. Model DCP 375CW
Wow!! After hours of trying everything I found this and although there was slight variation on my printer i got there in the end and it is working perfectly....thankyou so so much!!
i think the best option to start is to OFF the printer (plug off). and switch ON the power while pressing the menu button (like older model) = it will start up straight to "maintenance" menu. reason : i tried following the instruction and keep getting the "PRINTER ERROR 4F". after i try the above-mentioned, the printer works again. thank you to all the tutorial on the internet.
I have a DCP340CW - I was delighted to find this help, but I could not get into the maintenance option as described. Do these instructions work for this model?
I just figured it out, using this video and a couple of other helpful links. To get into Maintenance on the DCP34-CW I held down Menu button whilst inserted the power cord. I used Up arrow to enter 80 to enter Services Mode, then Mono Start repeatedly to get to Purge. Then I entered 2783 one at a time, using Set to select, then Up Arrow, 9 Ser, Up Arrow, 9 Set and it worked. Thanks for thevery helpful article.
DCP-115C. After a bit of struggle (for example I got "ERROR 46" message instead of Meintance) it worked ok :). Thank you random person from the internet.
Hello again. I have purged the error message now. I restarted my computer and then I got a different message on the brother. So started pressing the buttons as suggested and it went through the order fine. I have tried my printer and it is working. Thanks for the instructions.
This was working well to the point the the purge option should come up, but i can go no further than adding the 0, then set - up and down arrows or Mono only gives me digits or characters but definitely no options like "purge"? Really don't want to chuck this printer, can you tell me where I am going wrong please
Hi thanks for the helpful instructions. I have BROTHER DCP 770CW and i've try pressing the button but doesn't work, please help out with the instructions for this model
Great video. Thank you! It is actually worth taking the printer apart, and washing out the print deposit sponges, if you've had your printer X amount of years.
I've used your tutorial don my DCP-385C and it worked perfectly. The only difference is that just before the last step (the 99 exit sequence) the display had the message "ErrMachine46". However after exiting the maintenance mode all was ok and the problem was gone
I am a little confused by this. Could you please confirm for me why you cannot press up four times when putting you printer into maintenance mode? As demonstrated in the video you are not navigating a menu, but just pressing the buttons in quick succession. Any additional information on issues you are having would be appreciated.
Thanks. I think my problem occurred because I left the printer on by mistake for 10 days & it overheated? Your method worked, though the last two stages proved unnecessary. I would not have minded buying another printer, it's just the hell of setting the damn thing up.
Worked flawlessly on a DPC-115c eventhough it did not show maintenance in the display at first instead the camera button started to flash, but I punched the buttons as described anyway and it worked. Hate the idea of programmed obsolescence. Not very environmentally friendly. Brother should make sure the purge container was user replaceable if it is really a problem that the surplus ink can flow out of the printer at some stage....The purge container is just a sponge isn't it?
Hello, can you explain how to deal with DCP-150C? I can get to the Purge communicate, but combination of numbers you propose does not reset the counter....
Hi, many thanks for sharing this video. I have a DCP-330C printer and Im sorry to report that after trying this for ages it hasn't actually worked at all! Cant seem to pull up the 'Maintenance' message much less the purge message. Its a real shame because I was really hoping this would work.
a great help on my dcp-165C and dcp-j140 used in short period of time after purge counter set to ZERO but now again another problem, machine error 50, how can i resolve this problem on my printer
I have Brother DCP-110C. I was originally getting a "Error 46" message. After a few attempts, I was able to successfully use your video to reset the purge counter to 0000 but a new error, "Unable to Clean" came up as well as an "AF" error and some obvious poor alignment of the gears. Further troubleshooting with the flat cable fixed the alignment error but the "Unable to Clean" message persisted. I physically opened up the printer and cleaned the overfill ink tank and sponges and put the machine back together. The "unable to clean" message remains. I've tried to run the purge counter reset several more times just for good measure but no luck. It is still not working.
You can either physically empty/clean the tank or just continue printing until the ink begins to overflow. If you go for the latter I would recommend putting something under the printer to protect your desk though.
+Refresh Cartridges please help me brother j100 I have a problem when I print my brother printer takes a lot of time to print and at last does not print and say (error the printer could not print the word document)n please help me solve this problem please
Hi, very clear vid. I have DCP115 giving error: unable to change tried this one, however after completing the cycle, get new message: Machine error4F any advice.......
I have a DCP 750 cw. I tried doing the above , and got through the process twice but i still have the error message 'unable to print 46' . Any advice would be gratefully received , thanks.
Hi was interested in your video. My modle is a Brother DCP120c . It only goes up to 3 times not 4 .. and does not say maintance.. Can you help please. The window says.. Check maintance chapter, and routine maintaince... unable to clean.. Many thanks Brian
This wouldn't work at first on my DCP-130C printer. After OK, menu, Mono , up arrow x4, it goes back to Clean Unable 46 error message again with green 'Photo Capture' button flashing. If I then press up arrow I can scroll through to 8 and 'Maintenance 8' appears in window, not 'MAINTENANCE'. Eventually I managed to get to 'PURGE' and from there it was straightforward. I have my printer back and working. That God for youtube. Whoever you are, you are a genius! Many thanks!
My DCP340CW came up with Maintenance 4 but by continuing until the numbers requested appeared it succeeded. Important to note that when I added the 8 the display showed Maintenance 48 so had to persist to get there. Thanks it is humming along great now :)
I used to use an Epson ET-2550 ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 , an early model of the ink tank style. Hello Brian. I did the same...as in copy it all down etc...but still no joy with my printer.

So helpful.
Perfect
Your instructions are so crystal clear. No waffle!
10 out of 10.
Thanks
This is brilliant! Keeps an old but reliable printer/scanner (and a load of cheap ink) from the skip. Many thanks! (Brother DCP-120C)

Thank you so much. Worked for my brother DCP-165C printer. Lifesaver.
Hello again. I have purged the error message now. I restarted my computer and then I got a different message on the brother. So started pressing the buttons as suggested and it went through the order fine. I have tried my printer and it is working. Thanks for the instructions.
Thanks heaps for your help, just fixed the problem on my old printer it worked perfectly
Great video, got my dcp-115 going again, after the "expert" in the repair shop said I would have to replace the printer....
Thanks
Thank you very much, the video saved my good old dcp-135c
This really worked on my MFC-5840CN...glad i didn't have to buy a new machine...love it! And my machine is really old!

Amazing!!!!!! Thank you, so good for the planet that I didn’t have to buy a new printer.
HOw wonderful. You fixed our DCP 195C printer !!!
Many thanks!!! My printer works again. The best service ever!!!!! (even though i pressed the "pause" key after every step :-)
Brother DCP-340CW Thank you this worked, it did take 4 attempts I did persevere and im no computer geek, so to speak, cheers.
dcp 310-cn - didnt show *** maintenance *** but, proceeding as if it did, the process worked
thank you
Worked like magic on DCP-150C. Thank you so much ;) Great guide.
I am a little confused by this. Could you please confirm for me why you cannot press up four times when putting you printer into maintenance mode? As demonstrated in the video you are not navigating a menu, but just pressing the buttons in quick succession.
Any additional information on issues you are having would be appreciated.
Thank you very much! Printer nearly went back to the shop;)
Worked on DCP385C. Good Job. Thank you.
This. Is. Fantastic. Saved me having to go to someone and pay them.
thank you! Easy to understand and follow with step by step explained and written!
You're a boss. dcp 115c unable to clean error fixed!
Really useful, many thanks. It worked for model DCP-310CN.
Many thanks a very handy tip to know as my brother dcp-115c had this message a few years age
I couldn't believe it worked !!!! Thank you.
very useful. please note that the first step need to press all the keys rapidly.
Great advice do you have something for brother dcp 330c photo capture in red - all orginal inks
WOW fabulous really clear advice and sorted the problem! THANK YOU so much brilliant!
What a great and easy video to follow thank you so much!
Thank you for your help in the fight against planed obsolescence.
Yes, worked perfectly on my DCP-330c
Hello, can you explain how to deal with DCP-150C? I can get to the Purge communicate, but combination of numbers you propose does not reset the counter....
Hi, many thanks for sharing this video.

Thank you soooo much - can't believe it worked - Very grateful
DCP-120C - works perfectly. Thank you so much!
Worked a treat on DCP310CN thanks! Now presumably I need to empty the purged ink container somehow?
You can either physically empty/clean the tank or just continue printing until the ink begins to overflow. If you go for the latter I would recommend putting something under the printer to protect your desk though.

Hi, very clear vid.
I have DCP115 giving error: unable to change
tried this one, however after completing the cycle, get new message: Machine error4F
any advice.......
I have a DCP 750 cw. I tried doing the above , and got through the process twice but i still have the error message 'unable to print 46' . Any advice would be gratefully received , thanks.
MFC-3360C- hold 'menu' and plug power cable in, instead of 'start'. All else same as video. Great!
Nice!!! this totally worked for our bother mfc820cw printer, thank you!!!!
Thank you for sharing this tip.
Worked on DCP-117C
Still got some problems with the print quality of black... -_-
FANTASTIC, thanks for helping me out ! DCP-135C Cheers.
Wow!!!!! That's fantastic.... It works with my dcp-115c
My DCP340CW came up with Maintenance 4 but by continuing until the numbers requested appeared it succeeded. Important to note that when I added the 8 the display showed Maintenance 48 so had to persist to get there. Thanks it is humming along great now :)
This still works for DCP-145C. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video..I did reset my Brother DCP-150C printer.
