“The Mandrake Project” turned out to be my favorite album of the year so far. I really love it! I love that Bruce’s solo stuff is different from Iron Maiden for the most part.
I do appreciate it being a 7” square size and not some other oddity. At least I can keep the 7” single of Afterglow Of Ragnarok together with it since they’re the same size.
So as a longtime Iron Maiden fan i've always enjoyed the long galloping intos, and the complex nature of the songs , what i have not enjoyed over the last 4-5 albums is the muddy mix and the subdued vocals.When i first heard Rain on the Graves i was absolutely blown away this has been one of my favorite songs to listen to the past few weeks and the mix on the album is spot on , i've read reviews on other sights and pages blasting this album for being all over the place and not sounding "enough like Maiden" well that the whole point of a solo record, no it's not The Chemical Wedding, or Accident of Birth, and i never expected it to be.I find it to be a pleasant change of pace in a lot of the newer metal music coming out, because i for one believe in guitar solos lol. So The Mandrake Project, and Zakk Sabbath's Doomed Forever will stay in my rotation the rest of the week until Invincible Shield comes out next Friday
I totally agree with your observations about "the long ,meandering, intros (and outros) " that have been a part of Maiden's albums for awhile. I was disappointed with "Senjetsu", (Gave it away , in fact) but from what I've heard so far, this album sounds great (getting it tomorrow)...Bruce still sounds great !! \m/
Hi Brendon, only a couple of listens in and I'm on the fence at the moment, but it's definitely growing on me. The key is not to expect classic Maiden or even, given the comic book tie-in, a retread of his previous solo records. I'm hedging towards a thumbs up at the moment, but a couple more listens should do it!
Still waiting for my copy in the mail. As usual i don't check the album on UA-cam. Total surprise. I did receive the new Blaze Bayley. Can't wait to give it a first spin. Have a great week Brendon.

I love this album and agree it’s much better than Senjutsu. Book of Souls is one of a few Iron Maiden albums I don’t have and haven’t heard much from. This Dickinson album is fun and dark at the same time. Standout tracks for me are “Many Doors to Hell” “Fingers in the Wounds” “Eternity Has Failed” and “Face in the Mirror”. I also love the way “Shadow of the Gods” goes uptempo about 5 minutes in.
Got through listening to the album once. Tried to get through it multiple times and haven’t been able to. It’s more enjoyable than the last few Maiden albums but this one hasn’t really grabbed me yet either. Maybe that will change with more listens.
Great album and thanks for doing this review . I had purchased the 7 inch single back in the fall and didn’t realize the comic would have been the same in the bonus release. I had ordered the regular version CD and I am glad I didn’t shell out for the more expensive version now.
Great review my friend. Ima massive Maidenhead so I'm a bit biased but this is a cracking album and yes way better than Maiden last 2 slaps of vinyl! Bruce just defies his age singing like a youngin, these songs get better every time you push play. Love your shows Brendon.
A guy who's in his mid 60's should not be able to produce an album this incredible, but we're dealing with Bruce Dickinson, so... I love Bruce's solo work and this album is no exception. The last 3 songs are my favorites, but really, there is nothing here that I find to be weak or less than excellent.
Brendon, you say there is no jewel case edition of the album alone, but there is actually a digipack stand alone edition, which I'm glad I could find because I'm not a fan of this bigger format, and because it is cheap (12,99 euros here in France). I listened to it just once yesterday and I find it very interesting, with a nice diversity of atmospheres.
It took me a few listens to get comfortable with it but now I’m familiar with it I absolutely love every song more so than anything off of Tyranny of Souls. Bruce knows how to make a great memorable chorus. Resurrection Men is my current favorite, that chorus won’t leave my brain. Same with Afterglow of Ragnarok, the chorus is burned into my brain. I disagree on the criticism of Maiden’s last few albums so I have been quite satisfied on all fronts. Between this and the new Judas Priest I’m one happy camper…
I really like this album! I do prefer Maiden's version of "If Eternity Should Fail", however. I'm flying overfrom the U.S. to the UK for the Glasgow and Manchester shows on his tour. Cheers, Brendon!
I hope they eventually release just a standard CD in a jewel case without the comic book will be released for those of us just interested in purchasing the music. A standard sized jewel case or even a digipack for a standard price (i.e., $14.99 or somewhere along those lines) would be great.
I haven't givin this a spin yet love all Bruces solo stuff mainly Accident at birth is probably my favourite,Tyranny of souls and The Chemical wedding are bangers too,even Skunkworks is good for a alternative record
The production is really weird. It really feels like it was recorded at different times. If I'm not mistaken there are tracks recorded in 2022, 2012-2014 and even one recorded in 1998 (I think that's the closing ballad tune) with new overdubs recorded over the older recordings. You can definitely hear it in how inconsistent Bruce's voice sounds throughout. It certainly makes for a varied album and an interesting listening experience.

The Maidenfans forum has a long thread discussing this album with theories as to when some of the songs might have been recorded, so this is where I got this idea from. I guess it's all pretty much rumors and speculations.
I'm going to need more time with this album. It hasn't resonated with me yet. I'm not sure what it is either. I think Bruce is in fine form and the album was produced well. Musically, something isn't quite there for me. I can think of someone I'd rather hear playing with Bruce though. Adrian Smith is my favorite collaborator of Bruce's solo career (and Maiden as well). They have a unique chemistry and it may well be that he's the missing ingrediant for me. Accident of Birth is my favorite Dickinson solo album. I also don't agree on the Maiden take. I know that a lot of people do share that opinion but, I really enjoy Senjutsu! Book of Souls flamed out for me after a couple of months but, I still have Senjutsu in my rotation nearly three years later. There haven't been many albums in the last thirty years that have maintained their impact on me this long. There are so many intricate parts in those intros and outros that you don't pick up on without consistent listens. It's still rising up my ranking and dare I say, it may be top five for me soon if it continues to keep my attention. I'll give this new one a few more weeks before I know if there's something substantial enough on this long awaited release to justify the early praise it's garnering. It may be that Roy Z is an aquired taste. Most of the solo stuff with Roy has missed the mark for me so far. I may have to go back to those after I give The Mandrake Project it's day in court.
Are you going to check out the individual comics from Z2, Brendon? I didn't realize the 7" single came with the same comic too. Oof. Anyways, they've planned 12 issues of the quarterly comic, so 3 years of them. Pretty ambitious.
Bruce keeps saying it’s a 10-part series. Maybe it’s 12 if you include the prequel and the preview comic. I’ll pick up the omnibus when the gather all 10 or 12 parts together into a graphic novel.
I’m liking the album but it is hard to get into some of the material on it… probably because in a number of ways it’s very unique to what Bruce has released in the past. I don’t think it’s good enough to bash Maidens last couple of albums though… at this point , I still feel AOB is Bruce’s finest work as a whole but we will see. Also can’t help but feel that the lack of Adrian Smith on this album kept it from being better as well.

The whole story is being told across a 10-part comic book series being released quarterly. So they really couldn’t include the whole thing. I would have preferred the 1st comic to have been included instead of a preview. Including just a piece of it was pretty lame. Re-including the prequel comic that was already released with the 7” single was even worse. The pooch was screwed on this one.

How come most of the songs have short guitar solos and why are there some songs with no solos at all? Presumably Bruce told Roy to go easy on the solos but as a hard rock and metal guy this is a bad move for me.
I guess I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m a fan of the sum of Maiden than the individual parts. I liked the Adrian Smith/Richie Kotzen album well enough, but all the other Maiden off-shoot projects have never done much for me, including Bruce’s stuff. Bruce is a powerful, bombastic singer and he needs a powerful, bombastic band like Maiden to really give him something to spread his voice over. And I don’t feel he has the ‘in your face’ band on here to do him justice. The band weakens him, and I really find this to be overall ‘trying to get there but not quite making it’.
Strange as all the promotion upfront was about it being a concept album. Then to have the songs as themes in the storyline and to have the character’s names in the songs. Sounds like a concept album to me. 🤷♂️
Yes is a bummer is the same mini comic as 7" single, but is a great release, maybe not as full on as Chemical, Accident & Tyranny but better thsn Stink Works.
@@BrendonSnyder Yep exactly, I just found Skunk Works boring to grunge sounding which was the thing then, but Accident and other mentions are so full on Metal and yes had Adrian on Accident and Chemical and that helped, the 2 guitar style is better. Heavy as. Only heard Mandrake once so far, so may need a few more listens to fully appreciate it. Love your reviews dude, runny out if shelf space no doubt, but like me , just can't help it eh 🤘👍

For me it’s way better than the last two Maiden albums and better than Bruce’s last two solo albums so I’m very happy. But it’s nowhere near as good as Accident Of Birth.

This cd has a few killers and a lot of fillers. Not better than any maiden albums. I thought it was to atmospheric and like a feeling instead of in your face. Accident Of Birth Chemical Wedding Tyranny Of Souls Are brilliant Balls to Pacasso exspanded edition with two disc is great. Over all the cd is good. I downloaded it to sample it before I bought it and I'm glad that i did because it disappointed me.
Yep my feelings exactly. There's 3 stinkers and a re-recorded song that was already on a Maiden album. It feels like about half an album worth of good material. Nothing like the last 3 albums but then again it's been almost 30 years since AOB and CW and Bruce is in his mid 60s, we should have never expected something of that caliber anyways.
i liked the album , i didnt love it , i gave it 3.5- stars, i thought bruce did sound good tho , for me its about the same as senjutsu , tho that album was too long
It's growing on me, for sure, but it's also easily the worst of this Accident/Chemical/Tyranny/Mandrake style of albums. It doesn't sound focused, it doesn't have a single song that hits the highest of highs, and the production is just weird. I actually think the Iron Maiden albums everyone complains about sound better. There's raw, and then there's muddy. This one is like listening to a record through fog. So I like it, and maybe it'll still be one of the better albums of the year, but it's also disappointing for not coming close to living up to expectations after this many years.
Personally not a fan of it all. Its just plain boring to my ears. On a side note i havnt even been a fan of anything Maiden has released since Brave New World.
I don’t know what you think you heard but it most definitely is a concept album. All you have to do is listen to it. Guess you need to clean out your ears, open your eyes, and pay attention. 🤦♂️

Agree with your takes. Bruce sounds good. A lot of variety on this album. Rockers to ballads and everything in between. I think it’s a good listen.

Apparently only sold in stores, is a cardboard version of just the CD without comic. I’ve heard local record stores got them.

Written, not recorded at different times. They only went into the studio to record this about 1-2 years ago according to Bruce.

You totally need to check out Accident Of Birth which features Adrian Smith and is the closest in style to Iron Maiden. You won’t be disappointed.

Nothing like the last 3 albums but then again it's been almost 30 years since AOB and CW and Bruce is in his mid 60s, we should have never expected something of that caliber anyways.

i liked the album , i didnt love it , i gave it 3.5- stars, i thought bruce did sound good tho , for me its about the same as senjutsu , tho that album was too long

It's growing on me, for sure, but it's also easily the worst of this Accident/Chemical/Tyranny/Mandrake style of albums. It doesn't sound focused, it doesn't have a single song that hits the highest of highs, and the production is just weird. I actually think the Iron Maiden albums everyone complains about sound better. There's raw, and then there's muddy. This one is like listening to a record through fog. So I like it, and maybe it'll still be one of the better albums of the year, but it's also disappointing for not coming close to living up to expectations after this many years.

Iron Maiden have been boring as hell for most of this century. Funny how anything the members do solo is better.

Personally not a fan of it all. Its just plain boring to my ears. On a side note i havnt even been a fan of anything Maiden has released since Brave New World.

I don’t know what you think you heard but it most definitely is a concept album. All you have to do is listen to it. Guess you need to clean out your ears, open your eyes, and pay attention. 🤦♂️
