  • (5 Aug 2015) CHAN TALKS CANDIDLY ABOUT ROCKY RELATIONSHIP WITH SON JAYCEE
Things haven't been easy for Jackie Chan and his son Jaycee.
The action star's son - who is also an actor and singer like his father - was released from a six-month prison sentence in February after pleading guilty to allowing others to use marijuana at his Beijing apartment.
Chan, who admits he has a tough love approach to parenting, said Jaycee's incarceration has been "good for him."
"It was good punishment," noted Chan.
"For him, it's good. In the six months, now he reads a lot of books, writes a lot of songs, watches a lot of TV and movies and writes a lot of scripts. Before that happened, everyday he'd just fly to Japan, fly to Taiwan to see friends. Maybe he'd take two days to ten day to write one song. Now he writes so many songs. I thought wow, being inside is good for him. Every year he should go back inside for six months," said Chan, before adding "just kidding."
Father and son are now working on an album as they go about mending their relationship - which Chan said was strained due to his "traditional" ways.
"I was a too traditional Chinese father. Like, 'you, son, go away! I don't want to help you. You have to help yourself,'" recalled Chan.
"After 'The Karate Kid,' and seeing Will Smith stop (his own work) for half a year to help his son to make the movie, every day on the set, carrying his son on the mountain, I said 'why am I so stubborn? I have to help my son.' And also my son, he's like 'I don't want my father to help me. I want to do it myself. I want to show the world without my father that I can do it myself.' And I wanted to tell the people 'I don't want to help my son. I want my son to do it himself.' It's wrong. Now I've changed," explained Chan.
"After this lesson I changed. Now whatever he asks me, I will do it."
Chan is now looking for suitable movie projects for 32-year-old Jaycee and, in the meantime, his son is set to produce one of his records, expected out at the end of the year.
Chan's also hoping Jaycee will sing a duet with him on one of the album tracks.
"Probably there's one song we will sing with each other. I will probably call him begging him to help me sing the song. It's got very good lyrics," said Chan.
"When he was young, I ignored him. He sings in the song: 'when I need love where are you, even you go to the wrong school.' That's a true story. I said 'I'm sorry, I was busy dadadada'but nowsomething like that. I don't think he will sing that song. What do you think? I don't think he will sing the song. If he doesn't want to sing the song, I will find some young kid to help me sing the song, for him."
After the detention of Jaycee and other actors on drugs charges, Chinese authorities said they would ban celebrities linked to drugs from appearing in movies and TV shows in China.
However, the younger Chan still appeared in a small role in Chen Kaige's recent "Monk Comes Down the Mountain," which had already finished filming when Chan was detained.

I respect Jackie even more. There aren’t too many fathers at his age to admit that he messed up and hopefully changed to support his son.

How would you expect him to be? His only points of reference growing up were harsh & demanding, with no tolerance for error or excuse...He knew his parents tried to sell him when he was born. At the age of 4, his father would get him up at dawn to train Northern style gung fu which would be punished if done incorrectly usually with the cane & he would spend the night locked in the garbage bin behind the shack. When he got older and too energetic, and expelled from school in 1st grade ( personally I think he's ADHD & OCD before it had a name), his parents decided he was too much trouble & endentured him to the Peking Opera School when they moved 3,000 miles away to another country(Australia). They left him ALONE at the age of 61/2 under the control of a "master" who could LEGALLY punish him to DEATH if he chose. What followed was 10 years of near starvation, torture, beatings, nearly impossible physical & mental expectations, emotional trauma & social isolation. In his own words he associated his master's treatment of him with "love" Reasoning: He wouldn't bother to beat me if he didn't care.. He also admitted to being "socially retarded" and questioned if he knew what love was or how to express it if he did. Early on, once he made some money, he tended to show his affection by giving things to his so called friends. He is Still generous.. even to strangers. He became rich & famous at a young age before he had any instruction, experience, or common sense & had to learn everything the hard way..right...wrong...how to treat people. That is an ongoing life lesson for anyone especially for someone with a skewed point of reference. Cut the guy some slack. At least when he realizes he"s wrong, he attempts to make a course correction... Unfortunately he also tends to be a little trusting and gullible and wants to believe the best of people and situatiobs. With all the endured shit piled up in this man's past he should be a pyscologist's nightmare. It's a miracle that he's fairly normal & amazingly gifted and generally kind...with a few quirks here and there.

Jackie was an absentee father. This is not Chinese culture. In Chinese culture, if the son does any wrong doing and bring shame, the parents are perceived to be at fault for bad parenting. The parents are shamed. Jackie was young and cared about his career and whatever else than his son. He now realize the error of his ways.

Tbh, coming from a similar background. I can understand why his son turned to drugs…. Not only it’s the wealth, it’s also about keeping up with the pressure. To those who think people like that who are messed up, I think we all mess up. More or less… no one is perfect

    * it's a pity! While Jackie Chan is a role model for millions & changed many people's lives in a positive way, his own son turned to be a drug user! But that doesn't change his contributions to a large community whom he gave inspiration to be better, for decades! He is still a legend!

That is right. Jackie made a lot of mistakes. But I dont know if it was motivated by greed in his case. Jackie seems to have a good heart I think he had difficult life experiences, sad childhood etc. He probably didnt know how to care properly about his own kids as he wasnt cared about when he was young. He learnt it when it was already too late. I dont wanna say what he did was fine because he did really stupid things sometimes especially towards his kids. I just think it wasnt motivated by his bad will. I think his difficult past had influence on him. Jackie is still a good person too as he does a lot of charity, he travels almost everyday to other countries, does a lot of charity, builds schools etc. so I respect him mostly for that and for his world peace, non violence and humbleness message.
