if you set up the DosBox 'machine' as strictly a Tandy 1000, it will run that era of games effortlessly. great for stuff from Sierra and the like!
Haven't had much luck with ms dos games yet but some of the packages in that list are awesome like duke nukem, doom and wolfenstein 3d ports.

Btw, you can configure Quake I for full mouse look, including a crosshair. -- It ends up being the "+" symbol, but you can replace the glyph it uses for the + symbol to be a thin dotted crosshair -- makes Quake I super playable. (Btw, isn't there a native port of Quake to the RPI that uses hardware acceleration?) -- Also there are all kinds of mods for it (capture the flag with bots, etc.) -- Same goes for Doom I and Doom II (capture the flag with bots, etc. -- and there are mods that make mouselook work great).
How to we run the ones that require an installation? Can they be installed the SD card within the Pi?

For Quake, there's a source port for Pi that runs much smoother than trying to run it natively through DOSBox.

Quick, and may be very stupid, question here. Is there a way to tell Emulation Station to use another combination of keys to get out of a game? I have a Pi Zero setup as a Sega console emulator and the Genesis controller doesn't have a "Select' button. So I can't press 'Start + Select" to get out of a game. I always have to have a keyboard plugged in.

I recently installed Dreamcast on my Pi 3 but I can't get past the part where it asks you to program the date & time, I can't figure out how to set up my controller either. I would like to add the game Magic Pockets to an image I already have up and running. The problem is that it needs to be installed. The two games you did in your video here didn't need to be installed. What do we do in that case? Do you know? I'd hate to mess up an image by running install in ES - or is that how you do it?
Anyone please - What do you do when some of the DOS games you have want to be installed? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
If retropie mounts the parent dir of the EXE file and the EXE file is in a sub dir and NOT the dosbox dir at ~/RetroPie/roms/dosbox you should be able to run the installer with no issues I would think
Hey there! Everything worked perfectly untill I tried to run Daggerfall. I got into dosbox and then it quitted with the error "gamemanager not found" or something like that. There is a setup file inside the folder. How can I fix this?

Some games require installation like Harvester, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and MAx, Etc so on and so forth.... any tips on how to run the installation for games that are not just extracting? or Games that require Mounting and installation from an .Iso?
I have a raspi3 with both RetroPi, Desktop, and DosBox.
Is running DosBox in RetroPi better than from Desktop or should I just run it standalone.

Got Warcraft working fine, excited about some old dos game possiblities. Ran into a issue though, War Craft 2 opens and demands the old cd which you can't give it on Retropie ...is there a work around to get WC2 Tides of Darkness running?
You has to mount the image from warcraft 2.bin: imgmount d "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pc/war2cd/Warcraft 2.bin" -t iso -fs iso then tipe cd D:\ and DIR so you can find the "install" file, execute the install file, when is finished, make a .bat file with this lines:
imgmount d "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pc/war2cd/Warcraft 2.bin" -t iso -fs iso
cd \war2
war2
And that is all now you can play the campaing without asking for a CD, you only need to execute the .bat file that you creat to launch the game ;)

Have you been able to run DOSBOX games in Retropie's Attract Mode? If so, can you tell us how you setup the emulator in Attract Mode?
Also having issues dosbox under attract mode causing keyboard input problems, keys mixed up many not working and may become sticky like a cat was sitting on it. Power off only option

I have followed your instructions, but the game I am trying to play runs off an ISO file. When I launch the .exe it doesn't know where to look for the ISO. How do I get this to run?
[EDIT] Please disregard. I ended up creating a batch file to autorun the commands and mount the ISO image. Thank you for your videos.
Can anyone help me? I have a raspberry pi 3 model B with retropie 4.4.8 and I've tried a lot of times to make work dosbox, but the dosbox page doesn't exist on emulationstation. Can anyone help me with this problem? Sorry for the mispelling, I'm italian!
Question: I have this setup and working fine however not if I use attract mode... it messes up keyboard mapping and even makes random keys sticky like a cat was sitting on the keyboard. Not even able to ctrl-f9 out must power off to exit...please help

Dosbox is utterly painful on a Pie Zero. Less than a 386sx/16. On my 3b it felt like a 486dx/2 66 or 80

I have raspberry pi 0 (retriopie) and i downloaded dosbox. After send game to my retropie and click open button, i see notification about open game by dosbox and then window is closing and i come back to game folder. Whats to do?
cant you hide all the other files instead of .exe makes this alot more neater and easier
So I'm having a helluva time trying to get Blood and Marathon to run on RetroPie.
I can get them to launch but the frame rate is just.. abysmal.
Blood I'm trying to run through through the Dosbox emulator and Marathon is that weird Aleph One thing that you can install via the RetroPie packages setup.

mount d c:\¨folder of the image¨\¨image¨.cue -t iso or ¨image¨.iso -t iso.... you can add this to the option folder of dosbox so every time you run dosbox it will mount the cd!

how come dosbox site has over 3000 games in the compatibility list but the excel doc has only has a few hundred? is that the compatibility for retropie app only?

This didn't work for me. MSDOS or anything new for that matter doesn't show up in the list after putting games into the roms pc folder and restarting the system. Everything is up to date and I've tried several different games from the shareware versions from dos games archive to my abandonware versions. They work on my pc when using dosbox. Using Rpi 3b.ETA, love your vids they've helped me a ton with my Retropie build. PLEASE HELP!

Same here with the problem, there’s no MS DOS in the list after installing. If someone has a solution I will appreciate it.
Try deleting es_systems.cfg file in your retropie here: \\RETROPIE\configs\all\es_systems.cfg. Just be sure to back it up in case it won't work.
