DISASTER HARDLINE RACE RUN!! WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?

- Red Bull Hardline 2024 has been my downhill racing highlight of my whole career. After finishing a finals run in Tasmania I knew I was capable of completing this insanely difficult track but the new changes have made it harder than ever. Qualifying was awesome but finals didn't work out. Here's my POV of the day and a huge congrats to Ronan Dunne and Bernard Kerr for first and second place, their winning runs are amazing to watch. Also Juanver is a hero for third place! Thanks to the crowd, medics, marshals, TV and media people, catering chefs, uplift drivers, sponsors, John my mechanic, Gemma, my parents and of course Jono for pushing me to ride these huge jumps all week and race! Legends
What an absolute class act Matt! Such a nice guy, apologizing to the crowd for something completely out of your hands. You were killing it on your final run too. Next year legend!!
Honestly! That stood out more than any of the riding from this week
Lol, this guy cheated on his fiance for years with a horsey milf 😂 he's a bit scummy lol
well, I mean he did roll it off with the cutty in that corner
I didn't know you before this week, but wow, you were the highlight of all these videos. Kind, funny, determined, and so polite. Good on you!!!
Win or Lose it takes big balls of steel to go down that course whether it’s practice or race run, you smashed it Matt and watching all the content has been awesome. Thanks for taking us all along for the ride.
Matt, you did amazing
Sick effort...
You made my boys' weekend so much fun. Thank you
Both of the Jones brothers are always so positive and professional. Huge forces for good in the MTB scene!
Fair play to you mate, you still did great and only one of two to manage that canyon gap which absolutely insane with no netting.
The fact you were apologising to your supporters says it all, top bloke. 👍
Bad luck Matt. Compared to other times you ve ridden hardline I felt you looked like you have improved your downhill riding skills. 👌New helfare kit looks awesome 😎
I can't believe both you and Jono! You guys are legends!
Well done Matt! You should be proud of yourself. I really enjoyed watching these
You’re such a professional, well done, really humble, great content 👍
I know it sucks to have a run end like this but be thankful it ended where it ended. That wheel could have gave out in a way worse part of the track like the 90ft gap. I happy you get to walk away and with great memories! Good job mate!
you’re such a beast. but i still can’t believe how quick roman was in that top section
Was SOOO sad. been watching all week, just waiting for your drop. and the disaster.... its part of the game, but you trashed enough wheels XD hope you would make it down. Next year !!! cant wait. !!
welldone for yesterday shame you couldnt make it down was looking forwards for it but next year
Trying to watch this video and my wife keeps saying what’s that whistle sound? I keep saying I didn’t hear anything
Gave that a great go. As they speed goes up so does the risk of damage. to bikes and riders!
Unlucky mate, better luck next time 🤙🏻
Sorry? Nothing to be sorry about. You killed it all week with this event.
After watching all week, was gutted to see race run end. You got the canyon gap though!
Did they remove the canyon jump?
Which one cured AIDS, Matt or Johnnie-Oh?
Oh wait these guys actually do NOTHING for humanity
@@DaveWasThereMan bro what’s your beef with matt and jono 💀
@@DaveWasThereMan whats your issue
Best canyon jump. Man you won. I am waiting for hardline jumps.
Matt definitely was one of the bright stars of this Hardline.... Not there to win but to push his own limits and check off his own goals..... Which is super relatable for most of us everyday riders.... Mattt seems to truly be enjoying this format of riding. Well done depsite the tire issues. but that is racing....
Exactly why I can appreciate all the ladies showing up even though they didn’t race. Everyone is just there to push themselves
@Ivypoison23 Their time is coming... I like their approach of steady, smooth, safe progression... Gone are the days of just send it and hope for the best.
That course was brutal on bikes. The whole race was decided on the top section; the only people who were able to gain any time below that were the top 3. Ronan and Bernard were superhuman.
Literally - after that first split Bernard beat Ronan to the bottom, genuinely decided in the first sector
So hectic to think about how fast Bernard was that lower section and Ronan still booked it in that top bit.
And that crazy cat from Columbia, started it all off with that insane attack on the top section. That’s when it all kicked off!
The Columbian did alright too. Watch his space!
@@JohnChristopher-k7u both Colombians did really well. Juanfer Velez and Sebastian Holguin 🇨🇴👌
Matt is the only guy who can sound so angry and calm at the same time
Looking from POV doesn't do any justice to these tracks. Those downhill paths are absolutely vertical! Must be great being part of the elite crew that is actually able to concur such tracks. Awesome content man!
That drone coverage they had during the stream was crazy. Especially that one rock section next to the cliff.
Was it another tire that ended the final run ? Regardless you should be stoked man . Love your content 🤙🏼. Congrats on the River gap as well 🤯
It’s crazy how fast the racers are. Watching live, Matt clearly was slower and more hesitant than the top guys, but you’d never know it from the GoPro.
This is why I love MTB. True sportsmanship. I’m gutted for you, but the fact you apologised for something out of your control to the fans shows what a gentleman you are. Respect. You’re always a pleasure to watch
Matt I think everyone will agree super super proud of your journey this year so far!
From a slopestyle guy to doing full runs top to bottom at Hardline Events! Mate absolutely epic!
Will continue to follow your journey ever since Covid backyard builds!
Godziek said rampage was nothing compared to this
Godziek said that Rampage was nothing compared to that, that tells exactly how absurdly hard this track is
Rampage has almost no natural rock sections.
Yeah each rider basically gets a whole week to smooth out their line as much as they can. So while the Rampage hill is gnarly as, they can basically turn it into a professional smoothed out line.
Be super proud of your Hardline Matt. You came out completely blind and was one of the first people to ride the new top section in absolutely horrible muddy conditions. And then became one of only two to clear the canyon gap. Even without the finish, I'd say your Hardline was legendary.
I think you can be very proud of what you (and Jono) have done. No one can take the canyon gap test jump away from you! You have been great ambassadors for hardline this year. The race got 69K views and a good chunk of that was down to you.
Loved watching you Matt I was a Marshall gutted you couldn’t do the final run
such a shame for you and jono yesterday, had a great start too.
Great effort dude, was awesome to see your progression through the week (and from previous years) and like everyone so gutted for your race run, next year you got this top to bottom on race day 👍🏼🤘🏼
Those colombian boys turned up 👊
Gutted for you Matt. Although your run ended abruptly, your positivity when chatting to the crowd, shines through. Well done.
Watched the race on sunday. That course was sacrificing bikes left right and center! Realy enjoy following this journey. Its inspirational. Keep up the good work mate and well done.
Watching this makes Ronan’s winning run look so much more impressive! Dude was absolutely FLYING. Huge props to all the riders who can make it down this track!!
Ronan is the new king
If I would be Goodyear sales person I would apologize you, Jono and the public for putting such a crap on your bikes. BTW you and Jono made the best "advertisement" for the Goodyear tires. I am sure people will buy dozens of them for the most gnarly DH trails in UK. You both could really hurt yourself in there. Not acceptable!
Cool story Matt, it means you have to come back to finish 👌
You can hear it in Matt's voice during his run, just how scary doing this really is - keeping your brain from exploding is 90% the battle.
I'm thinking 2.5mm spokes, triple wall carbon rims, sewn on tires w/ bibb-mousse inserts (like the moto-rally guys use) for a 'bomb-proof' Hardine wheelset.......the present technology is just a crapshoot. The only alternative is to ride as fast a Ronan, and hop, skip and jump over the tops of all those jagged granite teeth (which seems an impossibility for most mere mortals!). Still, it's quite the achievement, just walking thru the door. Bonus - you guys actually put a fisherman in the Top-10 wearing the Helfare kit! (best uniforms out there!)
I agree even the top MTB tech used is not enough for this type of run.
There is a pointy rock at 7:21 on the left that looks to be the one thats killing tires in that corner. He swings his rear end out and just catches it.
Your on the Top of the World Dude Win Loss Breath it all IN Deep and Long....You Spread Joy you are a Winner in My eye's all day long.
Serious question, how do they not deal with constant punctures on trails like these? Like the jumps and rocks I used to have schwalbe’s and used to deal with punctures on smooth path’s regularly
Not a great endorsement for Goodyear tires, with both Jones brothers blowing out on the same berm. I swear Matt's rear tire washes out more since he switched. Time for some R and D, Goodyear!
A...what tires are you using so I dont use them? B. cush cores? or not enough to help? c) redbull should let people re-run for mechanical failure.
I just found out that my dad is friends with a hardline racer ( taylor Vernon ) with they met through motocross ( my dad is mathew luce btw ) just wanted to say that because i thought it was pretty cool. anyways great vid matt.
You’re the reason we watch Hardline, Matt!!!!! I watch all of the boys content religiously running up to hardline, and yours is my favorite this years! You really showed how MENTAL the terrain is with all the sharp rocks. Honestly I’m shocked that half the bikes survive a race pace run. CONGRATS man I can’t wait to see you do it again soon!!!!!!!
I was as gutted as you were we all know that you are capable of getting through that course
It was so tough to watch live you did incredible until the tire fell off
My three favorites Matt Jono and Theo all got flats.
Same here, gutted for Theo as well..
Progression is what I see Matt. Way to explore a whole new area of riding bikes.
I don't understand what happened. Did something happen to his bike?
Curious why marshals whistle as you pass. Indicates 'all clear' ?
You and your brother should swap places one day and see if anyone notices lol
You won the event being one of the first off that canyon gap. Mega weekend Matt and thanks for letting me live my dreams through you ❤️🤝
Well done, Matt; that line’s crazy! 🎉
2 flats in the same section for yourself is some bad luck man . Get em next time !
Please bring back your intro, I love it
Smashed it either way Matt. Well done 🤟🏼
If you fall you you could break an arm.Be careful.
First hardline ive properly followed, and mats videos have been great all week. Tysm for showing us bts of hardline and showing the valuable work of builders and marshels
New follower of yours and gutted for you and your brother too! You did a great job on and off the bike throughout the whole event. I'll be hanging around for more for sure - keep the great content coming!
I know your tyre came off the rim and it was likely related to that left handed berm you took so fast, but I'd be really interested to hear a deeper detailed analysis of what actually happened, why, how it could be avoided in future, tyre pressures, those cool new rims, etc, etc, if you were up for it.
So British “NOOO! What a shame” 😂
Matt jones at rampage… that’s what we need
Matt and his brother are so entertaining
I needed Damo the bike bodyguard on Saturday 😂💪🏼
You run Cushcore or similar tire inserts Matt? Obviously hardline jank is unprecedented so maybe you’d get flats regardless but if not, why not?
You’re an absolute superstar Matt. What a gracious man you are, even in defeat/broken wheels. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
What were you sorry really sorry for at 5:55?

Should of stayed on contis
Thanks! Totall newcomer to Hardline, awe-struck, bet MotoGP and WRC riders/drivers are amazed, love to see video of trail builders. All the best
Warriors come out and gaaaay
So proud of what you accomplished Matt! Even if your race ended short, you were still able to walk away which is a huge win. Plus hitting the canyon gap is enormous in and of itself! Well done!
O damn.. i couldnt imagine having to race this line.. at all
New wheel sponsor time 😂
@Matt Jones
Oh NOOOOO!
Saw the results yesterday with you and your bruv
Gutted for you.
WHY?
Cos I am 56 and getting back into it AND you had my number Matt
I was born on the 13th. And I can’t afford the Helfire kit!
Am after a Mondraker or Nduro8 from my local shop Pedalz at Beccles
THE best footage, down to earth and not arrogant
Best bike vlog channel going
REEEESpect
To the belly………
Jonathan
Am I first
Crowd showed you so much love!
Great crowd at Hardline this year.. I would say that, that's me on the left in the hat and the KGATLW t-shirt!
Dude, gutted!! However, watching the video of the faster riders, it looked smooth. But your videos truly showed how much a barstad of a course it was!! The holes between features looked small, but you showed how big they were. Takes BIG KAHUNAS to ride that track. Fair play to you and all the others who finished or not, all MTB hero's #respect 👊
I would like to see a horde of regular mountainbikers competing for... I don't know, probably 10.000€... and the ONLY thing they need to do: get down this track as far as you can without crashing.
Gutted for your run but without you competing and posting here I wouldn't have got to see this incredible event - Thank you and keep up the amazing work ❤
Man, I'm gutted and feel sorry for you, but you pushed your own limits... Once again! It's absolutely scary to watch. Legend!
Absolutely gutted for you! you can see all week how much you wanted that run to go well and it just wasn't meant o be this time round.
Thanks for covering every aspect of the competition this year! It's been great to watch along and see things from a different perspective.
2025. Bigger, harder and faster right?
I was gutted watching when it happened, but you know you fucking smashed it anyway, nothing you could have done better, just sheer bad luck.
Ronan's POV looked stupid, the boy's an animal.
You better be back next year!
What an absolute Legend you are Matt! Racing Hardline along with the elite AND being one of the few to hit the river gap. Shame about yours and Jonos run, kinda funny that you both had a technical at almost the same spot tho. That part of the track seams like a wheel killer! Well... Which part isn't xD Had a blast watching you and others covering this mad event! You got this next year!
It was unfortunate I was there watching but I loved the way Jono popped his tire in the exact same place you did and I was so annoyed your tire came of because your my favourite rider there
That's a shame, Matt. I was watching live when it happened and you definitely had that sub-3 minute pace. Better luck next year. Now it's back to jumping houses.
Absolutely smashed it bruva, for once blame the gear! Proved yourself numerous times! Me and the wife still your biggest fans here in New Zealand 🍻⚒️👌 #00
You never know, It might have been a blessing in disguise. Imagine having a mechanical or tyre issue just before a huge drop or jump!..... you did amazing regardless
Funny how each riders helmet cam has better picture quality than Red Bulls VGA Nokia transmission 😂😂😂
So gutted for you and Jono and, of course, for Adam who could maybe have killed it even more if he'd started later!?
At the least, when it all comes down to it..............
You got further than Theo!
Mega gutted for both Matt (and Jono) after his stellar week at Hardline Wales.
Alas, you will ALWAYS have the Canyon Gap. That was one of the most sickest things I’ve seen in my life and you did it.
Something has been bugging me though. What is the issue about running inserts, given that everyone was running with mega high PSI in their boots? I would be doing everything to ensure that the integrity between the rim and the tyre is protected so why the reluctance in using an insert?
Always a gentleman
Great racing bro and you cleared the mega canyon gap ☆☆☆☆☆☆
Thumbs up
Subscribed for recent content and you being truthful for that wicked course. Y'all have balls of steel!!! No disrespect to ladies with statement as ya'll keep challenging limits.
maaaaaate! proper gutted for you, heard and felt that "NOOO!" on the live stream 😥
sick week though, you can be proud of so much, legendary entertainment 💞💞
Awesome video Matt, considering it's not you're discipline, you rocked Hardline 👍 it's not easy Ronan and Bernie were so after the win, but you and all showed class. Next year 😉
I was at Sea Otter one year when my buddy was competing in a DS race. He flatted with about 100 yards to go but the finish was mostly grass and he cranked it out for the W. The guy he beat actually offered up his rear wheel for my buddy to use in the next heat. Super cool vibes.
Sorry about your run, man. Next year, for sure.
I so utterly enjoyed your hardline content. It truly showed how difficult this really is. Sure you might not be competitive but man o man you showed so well how tough this really is and how flipping amazing all those riders are. Sir, you can be proud of your self!!!
Great mind uptake of that unfortunate tire breaking. True the track is extraordinarily rough and good the river gap was not included... It would be great to have it as an extra-day feature one-on-one besides the race...
Cool you went to the public and be happy mate, I dream myself of riding with my bro once like you, but am old...
Courage and see yae soon
what makes this so special is your humble attitude to everything and everyone..
The run eats equipment, wrong equipment (much mure heavey duty stuff (Motorcycle grade) or a better fit run to the content "down hill "Biking" so the promoter fcked it up by going over the top, pun intended
