They've done this experiment many times, with many odors, and they started with odors that the flies demonstrated no particular reaction to. They always test to make sure they don't have an odor that the flies already have a reaction to.
Wild flies can be trained too, as my poor video demonstrates. It's "reward" I can only assume was it's own amusement, the "punishment", my determination to pursue the little guy until it complied. I wanted it to go from one finger to another without flying off.. and the little guy obliges (in fact it did twice, as I forgot to turn the camera on the first time)
Nice work!!!! :) Do you have any paper reporting this experience? In fact the electroshock part really gives addicional information for their behaviour and its not a question of "A six grade can figure it out" but if they avoid or not the better reward.
Looking at ordinary flies, I get only sinister vibes but looking at fruit flies, they "appear" to be social, playful innocent, little fellows, insect hippies. But I still don't like them if there are many.
“We do that by lightly tapping the container…” *proceeds to slam the flies on the table*
Did they try switching the odors with the electric shocks. Maybe the flies like the stinky sock smell more than the licorice.

It seems you have quite making videos but let me say they are very cool and entertaining.

Good point!
Some common flies are harder to kill than others.

Those poor flies 2:45 D:
hmm
....... flies... invertebrates? They don't feel pain...?
Wandelaarke they do hurt, they just can't react to the pain emotionally, therefore it can't be defined as pain.
you can train flies but you can't fly trains.
Lol not a very good elevator i see.
dont hurt the poor flies what they had done to you ???///
Poor design, poor bioethics.
I hope that Jared was joking 11 years ago.
