  • This presentation - given at the Sacred Liturgy Conference in Spokane, Washington, in May 2019 - explains why Gregorian chant is the supreme model of sacred music, a reservoir of faith and a wellspring of devotion. It has three parts: (1) a rapid sketch of the history of chant in the Western liturgy; (2) why we sing our liturgy rather than merely speaking it; (3) the eight characteristics that make Gregorian chant uniquely suited to the Catholic liturgy. Visual images and musical examples are included.

Dr. K: as a music minister in the new Mass for the last 35 years, I could never articulate the problem I would experience when we would feature a "hymn" that sounded secular (i.e. top 40, romantic, c&w, gospel, jazzy, etc.). additionally, i know how pride overwhelmed me when i performed a guitar solo and parishioners told me how beautiful it was. Now i know that chant is the music of the traditional Latin Mass and i will not go back to the new Mass. I am retired as a New Mass music minister. thanks for the analysis. it is right on point.

Your son is in great hands at Silverstream Priory. We recently were blessed to have Fr. Benedict Anderson from Silverstream staying at our Parish. He has since returned to Ireland, but he left something beautiful behind. While staying here, he began celebrating the TLM daily and it was wonderful. Our great Pastor has since continued celebrating the TLM weekly, and it continues to grow. I pray daily for him, and Silverstream Priory. I am truly blessed to have known Fr. Benedict. He was only here for a couple of months, but his imprint will be felt for generations. God bless your son, and everyone at Silverstream Priory. I will continue my prayers for them, as I know they are praying for all of us.

Is brother Luke back yet from USA? I got to know from a priest from Cádiz (south of Spain) that he was told to leave the monastery for a while, as an inner dynamic to stabilize himself better later on in it...
      Blessings.

I've been chanting in our FSSP Latin Mass choir since this past September, and its always edifying to find those who are passionate on what can be a niche topic, even within traditional communities, online or otherwise.

Another wonderful presentation by Dr Kwasniewski. I think that here in Australia we are going through similar problems to those that you have in the USA and Europe when it comes to cultural decline. However, in the broader culture there are some good signs. I have noticed that our national government funded radio broadcaster has been broadcasting Gregorian chant fairly often over the last few years, and I noticed this particularly during our 2021 Easter. And as for the Catholic Church scene here, the only parishes that are growing much are the traditional ones.

    1. The angelic Gregorian chant developed for the sacred liturgy of the Latin rite of the mass has been eclipsed since the Vatican II. 2. The Sacred Tridentine Latin Mass has been banned in the magnificent St Peter's Basilica built for the very purpose of solemn celebration of the Latin rite. 3. And now to nail the coffin, Traditio Custodes has also banned the Tridentine Latin Mass by the man who says, "who am I to judge ?"
Now I am just wondering how can the present Pope continue to claim to be the head of the Latin church of Rome when every vestige of Latin rite liturgy, Gregorian music and the St Peters Basilica in Rome are nowhere in the ambit of its lex orandi, lex credendi ? May be the emperor has no clothes !

They can attempt to ban these things, but the ban will never be able to endure.

Our parish has chant and polyphony for High Mass each Sunday and Holy Day. It elevates the soul into near rapture.

Soon, we may have to chant in open fields under this regime.

In just one limited sense I disagree. The folksy guitar strumming tunes point in the direction of great music in my view; it is only music that is harsh on the spirit that is completely foreign to the mood and atmosphere required for a decent mass.
