My high school concert choir sang this at the Basilica of St. Josephat In Milwaukee WI and it was awe inspiring. The clarity of the words in the huge dome. The reverberation let us hear ourselves as we were singing, which never happens in our auditorium. The beauty of the church only added to the beauty of this arrangement as it is. I

Wow! I sang under a St. Olaf trained director (classmate of Dr. Jennings and his wife, Carolyn Jennings), and learned to appreciate the approach that was known as the "St. Olaf sound". This is beautiful. Clear sopranos, supportive basses, wonderful inner voices.

This is my favorite arrangement of this hymn. I wish it would be performed more often.

I enjoy listening to St. Olaf. Their pronouncing of words is so clear in all their singing.Great teaching on behalf of their conductors.

But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure. - Psalm 61:14-15

I met Mr. & Mrs. Aune quite a few times as their other son is our pastor. The Concordia Choir sang in GR on one of our weekend tours in '75 or '76.

This is from the album "Reflections of Norway" which was from the tour to Norway in 1980. It was recorded in the Grieg Hall in Bergen. I have to say St. Olaf no longer sings with this amazing intensity and rhythmic pulse, nor as full of a tone. Kenneth Jennings was a genius and awesome musician.

The men are too loud and sound angry. The alto/soprano parts are too beautiful to be so overshadowed. I'd like a more balanced sound. Love this piece and have sung it so many wonderful times.

Far too many American choirs, especially volunteer choirs, have weak men's sections. This choir, however, reflects a just balance of high and low voices. In addition, the rigorous contrapuntal style of Christiansen's writing requires a robust response in every vocal part, and these men carry it off with spectacular elan.

An unfortunate arrangement of the sublime classic on unnecessary steroids. Can we say, “gilding the lily”?
