I met John R. Cash four times and was the only one that got to interview him in my hometown Bergen, Norway in 1997. What Marty says of him is absolutely true. He had a charisma like no one else.

My favorite story of John is once on tour, he got off the bus to go get some ham in a deli. The guy behind the counter was star struck and stammered out some kind of conversation with him with John being very gracious and generous with the man, and after about 20 minutes of small talk, John says........."Now, how 'bout that ham?"
Of all the stories I've heard about Marty and Johnny Cash, this is the first time I've heard the story of how they met and came to play together. This is an amazing interview series. Thank you for this for all Marty fans.
I sure wish Marty would release a best of the Marty Stuart show, I used to have my favs backed up but when I went from DISH to Xfinity I lost it all and some of it was priceless. Most of the Charley Pride episodes, Jean Shepard, Buck Trent, we're my most treasured and only a couple are on UA-cam and in poor quality. The Jean Shepard show was probably the last time she was with a great band and sounded that good and I can't remember the other great ones I've forgotten... lol
This is the best Marty Stuart interview I've ever seen Joe. Each part just gets better. I've seen a bunch of his interviews but you and Marty are on the same wavelength. I bet you guys could sit and talk for hours about the most incredible stuff. Can't wait for the next one.

His respect for those whom he loved and learned from is so strong and very touching, as is his respect for his band, the accurately named Fabulous Superlatives.
Mary Ann, it takes a special person ~ hugely confident yet humble at the same time ~ to name a band using these words! I’ve never seen anyone suggest that Marty rename his band. Rather every writer ~ just like me ~ gushes about how the name is perfect. LOL!! Each of these guys is a world class musician. To have them work so well ~ they’re so tight ~ is fabulous!
Man...for an old tone geek like me that last part of this interview is PRICELESS! I love how Marty expressed it: "Chasing tone....a life sentence." That is SO true. I did it, and now my 23 year old guitarist son is DEEP into his obsessive pursuit. I related to every word Joe and Marty are saying there. And the part about performance volume? Absolutely spot on! In fact, I quit the best band I ever played in because I could not get the others to buy into the "less is more" philosophy Marty referred to, and I could no longer deal with the onslaught on stage. When stage (or PA) volume is too loud, there is no ROOM for the tone to breathe. The persistent "drone" causes everything to thin out, because our ears have nothing to distinguish. When you turn down and play with dynamics - emphasis in the right places - lower volumes sound BIGGER. I love hearing a legend like Marty discussing the exact same challenges I faced in my little insignificant career. lol
I found that tone in an Alvarez 5055 Jumbo back in the late 70s ... Found it again in a later model Alvarez jumbo ... LOVE it ... And Marty is exactly on point - once you find it - stay with it.
I hope you see this I didn't catch video 1st day! I really appreciate Marty's great stories of Johnny Cash. I will always remember Johnny and family's great show at Sea World Orlando I think it was 1976. Amazing!
My personal wish after Marty catches his breath with being so very busy that he completely focuses on a complete tribute to his mentor , family,and very dear close friend that I know he dearly misses very much ! I know this will happen at some point knowing how Marty Stuart is and he will absolutely NAIL IT ! No names needed in mentioning ,it's NO BRAINER!!
Never has anyone ever been in the right place at the right time more than Marty Stuart! But as a grizzled old football coach used to say when asked how his teams seemed to get lucky more often than not in close games, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." Marty was always prepared for the opportunities when they presented themselves.
Love Marty's studio insight. Getting the band to turn down, listen and make it a conversation not 4-5 monologues going on at once. Another home run Joe!

Love Marty. Have seen him several times in concert and always a great show. Marty is the Forrest Gump of country music. He’s met them all and has seen it all. A real national treasure.
Thank you for part 3, Joe. Marty sums it all up best when he describes the architecture of music. That's what is missing from today's music. It's all so artificial. Engineers can turn bad vocals and instrumentals into something better but it always comes down to microphone placement and the sweet spot. And Marty definitely understands that! And there will never be another "Man in Black". Like Marty, I always go back to the early recordings to really appreciate music all over again.
Marty and Joe the memories between you two is awesome. Love your interviews. Please keep doing them. Keep Marty coming back, he has the history of country music in his mind, more people need to hear the stories about the first great country stars. Before they were stars.
Even though I'm not a big fan of country music, I've heard Marty Stuart play guitar and mandolin and I just marvel at this guy's chops. He's the real deal and then some. I have all the respect in the world for his musicianship. He's a virtuoso who could adapt to any genre, it's just that he grew up in Mississippi, which shaped his musical direction.

I really appreciate Marty’s insights. I have a stack of Charley Pride records I plan to reinvestigate as a result of his reference. I totally appreciate Marty’s talent and gentle wisdom. Steve.... Unfortunately I’ started a very strict diet a week or so before this interview so I didn’t order one but I so wanted a thin crust crispy NY style cheese,pepperoni and mushrooms pizza. Bleaker St. in N.Y had the best I’ve ever had..... Lumbardy‘s ( not sure about my spelling) pizza in New York in Little Italy not far from John’s on Bleaker St. is close if not even but I think John’s split off from Lumbardy’s years ago. Nashville had 5 Points Pizza and its the closest thing I’ve found in Nashville. I understand the owners went to N.Y to learn how. Only thing is we don’t the “da wader”. I was very fortunate in discovering the many great multi-musical talents of Marty Stuart a long, long time ago, and have been enjoying watching and listening to him ever since. And above all that, I find him to be a very likable person, too. He's, quite simply, an all-round great entertainer, as well as being a humble, honest, decent human being, and that's such a rare combination, especially in our current time, in my opinion.
Right on Marty about Luther Perkins... Small time guys want to make fun of him like he couldn't really play... That boom chicka boom was one of the most intricate things... It was like tripping turned into ballet... Very very clever very very tricky... Nobody did it like Luther

Lumbardy‘s ( not sure about my spelling) pizza in New York in Little Italy not far from John’s on Bleaker St. is close if not even but I think John’s split off from Lumbardy’s years ago. Nashville had 5 Points Pizza and its the closest thing I’ve found in Nashville. I understand the owners went to N.Y to learn how. Only thing is we don’t the “da wader”. I was very fortunate in discovering the many great multi-musical talents of Marty Stuart a long, long time ago, and have been enjoying watching and listening to him ever since. And above all that, I find him to be a very likable person, too. He's, quite simply, an all-round great entertainer, as well as being a humble, honest, decent human being, and that's such a rare combination, especially in our current time, in my opinion.

Right on Marty about Luther Perkins... Small time guys want to make fun of him like he couldn't really play... That boom chicka boom was one of the most intricate things... It was like tripping turned into ballet... Very very clever very very tricky... Nobody did it like Luther
