Great video. I heard Peter Zeihan say that due to the Jones Act from the 1920s the amount of commercial transport through America's waterways is quite limited. If this Act would be done away with much more of the US industrial cargo would be through our riverine system. That would save the economy a huge amount of money and would greatly decongest our roads.

This is great. I was under the impression that freight rail (and trucking) had almost completely replaced barge shipping. Cool to see otherwise.

Hey man! Your videos are beautifully made. I have a channel similar to yours in size and I would like to comment with you a few things about the UA-cam algorithm and about the audience profile. I think we could both learn a lot about the platform. Let me know if you're down and keep up the good work!

Sooooo, where were the military to deploy in 9-11 ? We had firemen. Big questions considering NY Harbor..and Liberty right there. Just a question that seems obvious, especially now.

I like you using footage of a self-propelled freighter on the French river Oise, at 1:08 and 2:06, the size of these barges is about the same as a single barge in America, where they are tied together in convoys of up to 42 or more. Our European rivers just can't support those immense sizes. Greetings from a European river captain.

Good vid. I would've liked you to mention the Chicago Canal as that increased the scope of connection so that you could go from New Orleans to Chicago to Buffalo to New York City

It's not really a "secret" claim when Americans are always bragging about it, even though a lot of rankings don't even put the USA as having the most navigable waterways. Its rivers and canals aren't the deepest for bigger ships either.

America has great waterways. I’d put use 2nd or 3rd at most Europe has impressive waterways for barge traffic that can easy ship a lot, and then South America has deeper rivers to accept more ships inland further but in the states the Mississippi can have ships up to around 300 miles inland and what ships can’t reach barges get the rest from Tulsa Ok to Pittsburgh, there is a big network and any AIS app shows how full those waterways are. The hardest part is the continental divide, we will never ship products anything pass that inland, all that has to go through the Panama Canal or by trucks and rail. Then the 1940 they triedc connecting the gulf ICW and Atlantic ICW across Florida to be able to ship items from the Mississippi to New York while using the inland waterways instead of having to go offshore but it was shut down due to environmental factors so that never happened.

Fascinating presentation -- thank you. But what a disappointment that the setup benefits the military as well. These forces are the greatest purveyors of mayhem and misery around the world today.

O just incase you didn't know a average size Cargo ship. Gets like...4...FEET.TO.A.GALLON. OF CRUDE OIL. Some the bigger the ship the oil it use. A 18 wheelers get about 6.5 miles to a gallon a lot more than A cargo ship.

America is on planet earth, isn't it? And many people there came from Europe. So don't tell me they did not have access to state-of-the art infrastructure technology and know-how from Europe. At the end of the video you rightly mention the army corps of engineers. So there were plenty of well schooled engineers..
