I like the path you took on explaining how dim light becomes monochrome to our eyes! I've never heard someone explain that aspect of the night sky. Another interesting thing is, if we could see microwaves, the sky WOULD be quite bright as the CMB covers the night sky completely.

Space isn't black, our eyes can't see all the spectrums in space

I really hate that the Universe is expanding faster than C.
yeah but on the flip side if we hang around long enough, our neighbouring "not so uni"verse might just expand into us.... that will surly pop a few bubbles :)
Or do you??
No single object is moving faster than the speed of light. Everything is just moving away from each other, at a rate of 70km/s per Megaparsec. It follows that the expansion rate between two bodies is proportional to the distance between them - this expansion rate is bound to reach c given unlimited distance (which is assumed to be the case). This is not to say that the absolute velocities of any of the bodies are above c, just the rate of expansion between them.
@@lucapowell5502 No matter can travel faster than light, but the universe itself does not exist or is not surrounded by matter and thus is not bound by these laws. We have to conclude from this that the universe is expanding into a thing called not matter.

I've never understood the argument that in an infinite universe there would be infinite stars, resulting in light being everywhere.
Why is it not possible for the universe to be infinite, but the matter that makes up stars, planets etc. to be finite?
because than the matter would be spread so thin, that it would basicly not there at all. No matter how high you set the amount of matter , it is still nothing compared to an infinite universe.
How much mater per cubic meter will you have? If you divide a finite value by infinity, you always get zero. Both must be either finite or infinite.
Good question. First, Olber's paradox deals with an infinite HOMOGENOUS universe. There is an underlying assumption that we are not in a special place in the universe, because locally we don't seem to be. If you discard the assumption that the universe is homogenous, other problems crop up. For example, If you have finite matter in an infinite void, it would tend to diffuse over time, so an infinitely old universe with finite matter and infinite size would be effectively empty.
@@Heavensrun this explanation means you are smarter than most
@@Heavensrun The universe is basically empty, to be fair. Planets are far more rare than empty space.
This is my new favorite channel of all time (and space)
Nice answer. I liked this video. Great video, keep up the good work.
These are some of the fastest clicks of the quarantine! New Astrum video? Yes please!
I've never understood this paradox, sure in an infinite universe there would be infinite stars but there would also be infinte space to fill. Surely what matters is the amount and brightness of the stars relative to the amount of space?
coviant lynch I had that thought too. Could just be that an infinite universe is so big that not all light can reach earth
In a infinite space, time would also be infinite. And given enough time everything that has 0,000...0001% of probability would happen, so, the fact that there would be a star few billions of kilometers away from another would be damn highly likely to happen.
That said, imagine infinite time and space, a lot of stars would have infinite time to born right next to the other. Kinda hard to explain but I think I got it
Lol this sounds like a question from the 1600’s being asked in 2020.
Good explanation. Have seen other explanations with much the same information but this one made more sense to me. First one to mention eyes and how they work as well.

youhave the same effect if you press a light source like a flashlight against your fingers and turn it on.
fun side effect is that you can see the blood vessels in your fingers that way.
Great work, keep it up!
I never really thought about this question but thanks for answering
If the universe is constantly expanding, what is it expanding into?
the void outside the universe.
at least thats a possibility but we will probably never know since we would need to leave the universe first to find out and thats never going to happen.
@@uteriel282 Not how it works. The way the Universe is structured you can never get to its "edge" because to do that you would either need more time than the Universe will exist or would go back in time, which is irrational.
The Universe isn't expanding into anything, it is just getting "bigger" as in everything is moving away from everything else.

How is it a proof the universe is not infinite when the light of distant stars cannot reach us due to the expansion of the universe?
Good point imho :) I think its based on the idea to take the red shift of the farthest stars and calculate it back to a single point in time. So you get an age of the Universe out of that. The roughly 13 billion years. However we can see a 45 billion light year bubble from the universe which is no contradiction as in could be explained with a expanding universe. But frankly even if they can see that, there exist probably far more. So the 'size' of the universe is imo unclear until they throw the next 'theory' about everything.
I'd say the answer is 42.
This is the most soothing educational ever.
Space is dark because space is rapidly expanding and the farther away a light source is the darker it looks
thanks
”Dark is only the abscence of light”
-Albert Einstein
Or light the absence of darkness, maybe. Who knows.
it seemed like such a sily question at first and was thinking that it might have something to do with how our visual system perceives things visually. can't believe it that this might have implications on important astronomical matters... mindblown.
Me trying to understand the concept for my school project...
This is explained soooo good👍🏻❤️
There can actually still be infinity because of how common light sources are in space relative to space, it’s actually not too common, and light sources die out, it takes insanely long amounts of time to reach certain areas, and sometimes may not even reach. Also the light right now most likely won’t get any brighter because it is the universal average distribution over billions of years. You guys have to take it to account the speed of light compared to the universe’s vastness as well as how common stars are relative to space and how bright everything is. The frequency/distribution of stars can be calculated by the amount on a certain super cluster including the gaps in between each super cluster... Anyways what I’m saying is that this video may not have it right, but it is logical, you just can’t underestimate how big the universe is compared to how small stars are and how slow their light is.
It is black because it is absent of light

The paradox doesn't make any sense. You'd have to assume every light in the universe is visible from every point. That is definitely not true
And what about the redshift of distant stars?
Yes. Plus, applying inverse square law means that light reaching you from a stars that are infinitely far is zero. I'm confused.
@@uegvdczuVF Not zero, .. almost zero. And almost zero in an infinite scale means infinite.
Yes, I am confused and just need some clarification: Now I'm a complete casual, but I find this... a little arrogant (from an earthling perspective). Is Earth a hot-spot to catch every single light source in the universe at any given time in its orbit and rotation? Or is the implication that the night skies of every planet in the universe wouldn't have black space (as seen through cameras)?
Is there really nothing out there that slows or absorbs light, or in this context, does this not matter? So are we certain that there are even enough stars out there to pull this off? If the universe is infinite, it must be filled to the max with... stars? And our technology would definitely pick up all this infinite light? Or again, is this irrelevant? I'm sorry, this casual just needs some help. :)
@@FunZies. in the real world the universe is finite but expanding. There is a part of the universe that we can detect (=observable universe) and there is the non detectable (=not visible with any current instrument) part universe.
As a galaxy or a star (lightsource) moves farther and farther away. The emitted light is being, as it moves though empty space, stretched into the infrared spektrum. (=called Redshift) (How? I don't know feel free to answer). If the lightsource is redshifted enough, we can't detect it and the section will appear dark and empty. This lightsource is outside the observable universe.
Hope this clears things up a bit. :)
