    The main flaw with this team was that it had too many ballers and not enough runners in the starting 11. The main attackers up ahead, in the starting 11, were Kane, Phoden and Bellingham. These are all ball playing players and need runners to be at their best. In their respective clubs, Kane has Leroy Sane, Phoden has Erling Haaland and Bellingham has Vini Jr. Them being surrounded by other ball playing attackers and not enough runners was one HUGE FLAW.
    If England had started Palmer and either Watkins or Toney infront of Kane or Bellingham, they would have been a more balanced and solid team.

    • @riichobamin7612
      @riichobamin7612 Місяць тому +4

      @StephenC1908 bro I don't mean to literally "run". Of course they can run, they are professional footballers for a reason. Olie Watkins and Harry Kane both can run, but what they do with their run is different.
      Olie can run into the box, headon into the opposition CBs, get behind the defenders, get a pass, use his first touch to setup a shot and shoot with his 2nd touch. Harry Kane can also do that but he VERY MUCH prefers to stay back, just outside or on the edge of the penalty box and then either shoot a long range shot or play someone else. They both are Forwards and both can run, but they operate in very different ways. That is what I meant. Kane is a natural False 9 while someone like Toney or Watkins is a proper No. 9

    • @riichobamin7612
      @riichobamin7612 Місяць тому

      @StephenC1908 not 3-4-1-2. More like 4-4-2 (but flexible). The front two of Kane in False 9 with either Toney or Watkins at the pure No. 9.
      In the midfield 4: Rice, Mainoo at the two pivot. For the other two mifefields, I don't have any solid choice as the choice between Saka, Phoden, Palmer and Bellingham will depend on the opposition.
      In the back 4, I will have John Stones operating as a traditional CB while defending but as an addition CDM/CM while attacking (this will also free up one extra midefielder to help in attack).
      I know that this is an incomplete plan, but I genuinely believe that having atleast 1 runner uptop could have DRASTICALLY improved England's chances. I mean Cole Palmer got the space to shoot just outside the box because Watkins took the attention of the two Spanish CBs. Same logic here mate.

    • @riichobamin7612
      @riichobamin7612 Місяць тому +1

      @StephenC1908 Cole is a Winger or an attacking midfielder in my books. He too seems to prefer to dribble, take time and setup shots from outside or on the edge of box for me. Also yeah, Jordan is a good shot stopper but his lack of ball playing skills was showing up, especially at the end when they were just hoofing the ball up instead of trying to pass and setup chances.
      But I got no idea about Ramsdale 😅.
      For context, I am guy from India who is a Man Utd fan. So my knowledge of English players is limited to only the big names from the big PL clubs. Sorry for that 😅

    I think it's lots of things. Availability issues in the 6-9 months leading up to the tournament meant we couldn't really experiment effectively or play our best team. Fitness was an issue for too many players. A general lack of depth at LB. Trippier on the left was an issue, I personally would have gone with Gomez; having watched him he provides a lot more width and aggression down that side. Playing Kane in every round was clearly a mistake in hindsight. But these are serious decisions. It's easy to say drop Kane and Trppier but you're leaving a huge amount of experience out of the team and bringing inexperience in. No point pretending that's easy. However, they were both instrumental in England not functioning as a team

    As a neutral, I really can't understand the reason why England backs off right after scoring a goal (either the opener or the equalizer) and doesn't go straight for the sucker-punch. I don't know if it's a request from the manager, I don't know if it's psychological... I just know that, in the context of Premier League matches, these same players wouldn't have that attitude.

    • @mikester4896
      @mikester4896 Місяць тому

      There's a real fear of conceding that's been imprinted into the England squad, it has always been there way before Southgate so it has to be the philosophy of the English FA. We have to open up to really go for the throat but that means we're more vulnerable at the back so that fear kicks in and we shrink back towards our goal.

  • @thesurrealist7

    So Kane didn't play well because he developed a mysterious injury that is unnamed and only appeared after his poor performances were being criticised. And Bellingham is kind of arrogant because he plays for Real Madrid. The excuses are getting laughable now. Kane is overrated as a player, so is Bellingham.

  • @Oakdenalan
    @Oakdenalan Місяць тому

    I think ultimately for international tournaments you need: Good Players, Motivation, Chemistry, Luck, Calmness on the ball, able to take penalties. Before southgate, England only ever had the first one or two of those ingredients. Southgate has done well to massively improve team chemistry as well as our penalty taking AND seems to have brought us a good amount of luck with easier draws etc, but we seem to lack that one last ingredient of being calm / controlling play in high pressure moments. I liked your suggestion in the last video where maybe an additional coach / a reshuffle can take place rather than a complete manager and coach replacement.
    In terms of lineups and subs etc Southgate pretty much made the changes every fan wanted - Trent started then was removed when it wasn't working, we switched to 5-3-2 as people suggested and started mainoo and things improved. People wanted Palmer and Watkins to get game time and they did....I think Englands issue goes beyond the simple things everyone looks at.
    Case and point in the Spain game, at the 75min mark England had Spain on the ropes and a throw-in near their goal line, we threw it back, passed back, then booted it off the pitch. Even Southgate commented on that, it's not him instructing them to do that, but it is perhaps a psychology issue and the last ingredient, to get England to actually 'play' and keep the ball even in high stakes games.

    • @chapman2001
      @chapman2001 Місяць тому

      The reason they play like that is because of southgate though

    • @Oakdenalan
      @Oakdenalan Місяць тому

      @@chapman2001 I'm really not sure. Sure, another manager may drill into them how to keep the ball, but I reckon you'll see England players enjoy the team experience less etc a-la Capello and will actually do worse. Southgate is a cautious manager, but he isn't telling them to backpass it all the time, or for everyone to stand still when they're off the ball. That's the players.
      I understand people's frustrations at Southgate seeming to be a cautious manager, but he's fixed so much. Looking purely at history / numbers, England simply aren't an A tier nation with Argentina, Brazil France, Germany, Italy, Brazil and Spain. Instead they're perhaps in that second group of Uruguay, Netherlands, Croatia etc. The fact we've reached 3 semi finals / finals within 6 years, and in the quarter final we lost at the WC we outplayed the French is completely unheard of in our history. I really don't see a manager change making us do any better than Semi's tbh.

    • @mikester4896
      @mikester4896 Місяць тому

      @@Oakdenalan I completely disagree, the football we play is safe and defensive football which completely negates any attacking prowess of the players we have. With a manager who can get the team to play faster, more attacking and fluid football we'll actually be competitive with the A tier teams because our players are capable of that since they do it for their clubs day in, day out.
      We also need a manager who's not afraid to bench our biggest name players if it benefits the team and the system, as someone with no experience as a manager, I could easily see that Watkins and Palmer instead of Kane and Foden would've been a far better option against Spain yet Southgate couldn't be ruthless enough to drop them.
      Southgate has been a great manager for England but he still embodies the philosophy of the English FA of safe and 'pragmatic' football and it just doesn't get us over the line. You can say anything but at the end of the day the trophy cabinet still looks the same so we need something different.

      @@mikester4896 FWIW I do agree now is a good time for Southgate to leave with his head held high, but people that are trashing Southgate and saying he's holding back the team I find bizarre. It's simply the case that England are usually solidly 'best of the rest' and rarely win knockout games despite all our own hype that we have 'golden generations'. Our record with Southgate completely goes against our history. Our 1966 win was a complete anomaly, outside of that our record is frankly awful. We get past group stages then lose at knockouts straight away. Our only knockout wins were narrow ones against Belgium, Cameroon, Ecuador etc. our record under Southgate is completely unprecedented and while I understand people now just want to see us go for it and perhaps be knocked out earlier, expecting us to win anything frankly goes against all the evidence for us over the last 100 years

    Pickford
    Trent, Guehi, Stones, Shaw
    Rice, Mainoo
    Saka, Bellingham, Gordon
    Toney/Watkins
    It’s that simple lmao. England need a manager like Nagelsmann, someone that wants to have the ball and play offensively.
    Someone that implements a system and builds his lineup around that system.
    Foden was the poty, but he has to play Cam or RW and move to the middle. Palmer is very similar. If you rather would have one of them instead of Bellingham or Saka, then I’m 100% fine with that, but DONT force them to play on the left side. A left winger/midfielder needs to play on the left side, I don’t care that much if it’s Gordon, Grealish or whoever

    England on paper had the strongest squad of talent by a large margin going into the euros. That they didnt win was a massive underachievement. But looking at how they played through the group stages and knockout rounds it was clear that they had overachieved in making it to the finals. Nothing seemed to make sense for the england team. The tactics didnt match the quality of the footballers, the starting lineups didnt make use of the depth of talent available to target their opponents. It all just looked sloppy and lazy and undercooked from the outside. I think england will continue to squander their chances, despite having a strong output of top quality players for going on a decade now.

      This is such a beautifully simplistic view of football and the tournament you’ve just watched.
      I slated Southgate from game two and it gave me little to no joy watching England play. The semi finals we played at best 45 minutes of good football, the final we were outplayed and ultimately, Southgate, again, was out managed.
      In retrospect, Southgate did all that was required to win the tournament apart from be the better team for the last 90 minutes. Even so, the momentum shift, even if short lived, after Palmer scored was real - it really felt like we could have capitalised on it and gone on to do the unthinkable.
      Had the result been different, Southgate would have been hailed as a superb manager who utilised the tournament system to his benefit, effectively managing players game time, not overexerting key players or risking too much within the 90 against smaller nations with a point to prove.
      Back to back finals is a solid foundation for the future and I think Gareth did a good job finding direction and instilling hope in a set of young players who achieved more than their heroes growing up. It’s now time for somebody with the nouse and know how to get England over the line. But to say “England suck” having seen those moments of brilliance from Saka, Bellingham, Palmer, Watkins, the consistency of Guehi, how much Mainoo stepped up, etc. is so reductive.
      Finishing second is something we didn’t dare to dream of in the early 2000’s. The squad is young, most of our best players will only get better with age.
      Football will come home. It just hasn’t yet.

      @@scameron4160 Yes, I put it simply that England as a team suck because they do plain and simple. I'm not about to overanalyze like all the copers are doing. It's really not that complicated, even the blind can see. You have good players and good moments that carried you to the final but never looked like a good team. Having good players and moments can only take you so far, if it was enough well Southgate would have at least 1 trophy by now but he doesn't.
      Need more "simplicity"? Spain on paper is maybe the 4th best team in the tournament if you go player by player. But they showed they were a superior TEAM except maybe Germany (which is where luck and moments come in). Spain relied on systems, structure, tenacity, and courage (all things England lacks). This is what makes you good, this wins trophies. Not this "oh but he made us believe" or "oh he made us feel good", tf out of here with that 😂😂😂.
