    Everytime I decide to walk my 2 German shephards, (one that's a year old, and one that's 6 months) I keep thinking ohh this is gonna go good, this is a great idea. It never fails to end with.... "God damnit!!!!" "Ohh my godd stopp"!! "Noo noo noo!" "Oh my god stop going into the street!!" "God damnit you got me wrapped around another mailbox!!!!" ......oh my lord help...

So thank you for the tips and especially sharing the fact that they will tangle no matter what. That made me feel better while I retrain the 2 in the mean time. Wish me luck and Thanks Again.

    This is a great informative video, I just want to point one thing out: Pulling has nothing to do with hierarchy or dominance, it's a very common behaviour for a dog to pull because they naturally walk faster than you, and as they start to pull they're reinforcing the behaviour because to them, pulling = moving forward.
    Dogs really aren't as complex as people seem to think, and understand why your dog is doing an undesirable behaviour is the first step to solving it.

      No I don't agree. Think about huskies doing their thing with sledding. Think about that they have to put the lead dogs at the front and less pulling dogs at the back. This is the behaviour of a wild dog pack also. We have to work with the nature of the dogs also. Some dogs are so anxious they have to be at the front and lead. Otherwise dig walking will never work for walking the both dogs together if you are constantly battling with the anxious dog to get on your side. When the anxious dog is walking by himself. He is perfect. Pack animals change when they are in a group / pack. Just like if we are running in a group. We all sort of choose where we run or walk. Back front middle.

    I just saw this video and thought it was great. I walk three dogs, 2 cane corso and a shepherd mix. Their weigh 155, 135, and 70. People often stop to ask how I walk my three like this and hands free. Everything you said is spot on. I use waist leashes and I place the larger dogs on the outside and the smaller in the center. The mix is so gentle and not remotely intimidating but the other 2 scare people and so I will reach for the short handles where we need to stop to allow others to pass. Also by keeping larger, more dominant dogs on the sides, I can gently use the back of my hand to push the leads outwards and the dogs will follow the direction of the lead. This keeps them separated and helps prevent tangling. Also a little tip for some pullers, slipping a tshirt on them and tying it firmly around the waist acts like a compression garment and helps reduce some of the excitement.

    Thankyou so much for your video. Just confirmed that one of my walking methods I am doing right with my 2 dogs. So many other walking methods were so frustrating and made me feel as if I was a really bad dog trainer. But have been walking and training for years with my individual family dogs. But it's the first time that I have 2 dogs now and wow it's such a much difference to just owning 1. Everything and I mean Every Possible thing is just so different. As they are living in a type of pack now. So when you were saying about the hierarchy and one will naturally fall into the leader position and the other walking by your side. I so understood and wow thought yes I'm doing it right!!! Have definitely subscribed to you and thankyou so much for your help❣❣

    i went to school with a kid who was missing the tips of two fingers cause a horse pulled a rope he was holding improperly and RIPPED THEM OFF. unfortunately not uncommon in ranching and dogs are obvi different from horses but it and your stories of people getting their hands broken just goes to show you how quickly things can get out of control with leads of any kind.
    i just had an interview at a dog daycare in calgary and it went really well so i have a good feeling about it!! i'm so excited!! your channel has been really helpful, i hope you keep making videos for a long time ❤️❤️❤️

      @InRuffCompany  5 років тому +2

      WOW! That's crazy! Yeah, when it comes to leashes and ropes all it takes is a quick and hard movement to really injure a hand. Crazy how fast it can happen!
      That is so wonderful to hear about your interview! The first place that I worked at was a dog walking/day care facility and I learned SO MUCH. Honestly, I wouldn't be where I was today without that place, so you've made an awesome decision. Fingers crossed that you get a job there, and if you don't just remember that there are tons of other places and your love for dogs is the most important thing! xoxo

      oh also i'm really good at making stuff, so i'm thinking of making some tools that would be useful for dog walking and general daycare. i'm thinking maybe a mini spray bottle gadget attached to my shirt for when they jump up, or a padded belt for walking. i'm interested in what kind of things would be useful for when you work with dogs, things only an actual dog trainer/walker would think of. throw em at me!!

    I have been walking 2 greyhounds for a long while. They walk side by side to me without going in front of me. I use voice cues for them to stop or turn left or right. They walk calmly. Even if I walk as a turtle they will check with me as they feel energy thru the leash. Now I adopted another greyhound. It takes me few days to master a walk with her before walking 3 dogs. I ask them to follow me as it uses their mind rather then instinct.

    Great tips. Very nice visually to watch, while scouring through multidog walking videos.
    I'd like to add that you might want to invest on a decent joring harness. (Something like Neewa is decent priced, but durable and light to wear even during summer.) I mean as a human. The belt you use might end up hurting your spine and back muscles if you end up pulled after a squirrel or a rabbit by 2+ dogs. Heck even one is enough. It doesn't need to be high end one. Just something comfortable to wear and attach the leashes to. The only thing is the leg hoops. They keep it from riding up from your waist (where the pulling would end up hurting you in a drastic yank'o'war).

      AWESOME! Thanks so much! I'll definitely check that brand out. I've been looking to upgrade, especially since I find the leash that wraps around me can wear down my clothes after a while. It's a great option if you're looking to not spend a lot, and it's done me well for a long time, but it would be cool to look into alternatives. Thanks :)

    I have 3 dogs. A small chihuahua puppy, a adult medium sized mutt and a border collie puppy. In the mornings I only walk the collie since the other 2 are not morning people and in the evenings when i take them all out it kinda gets messy from there. The chihuahua keeps barking at everything it sees and likes to try to yank you (it cant since its a weak chihuahua) the mutt doesnt want the other 2 dogs close to her so shes always trying to get out of their way by any means necessary and the collie pup is still in training so she is a little bit of a puller for the time being and still barks at other dogs. I also have to bring the chihuahua in after 30-40 mins depending on the weather just so I dont overwork him but the other two are fine for the rest of the walk. In the night I take them off either by myself or with someone else and its kinda just the same thing as the evening walk but shorter. Letting them off lead is stressful since the chihuahua will not come back if he spots something he wants to bark at while the other 2 run around like mad.

    Well done good info about lots of practice things , what is it about squirrels ? Our cockerpoo goes absolutely balmy about squirrels, the only thing more exciting are ducks, with poodley spaniel mix , the most wonderful thing is a duck, that her ancestors were trained to find and pick up. I assume you are in America? The English cocker spaniel is a lovely dog, but oh my goodness they have absolutely bags of eccentric English Dogy DNA. They are as keen as mustard always on the go and up for absolutely anything. But the Cockerpoo will love you forever and be a very affectionate friend. Just a few thoughts there for anyone across the pond who does not know this particular cross. Best wishes from the rainy island.

      First of all, i don’t own a dog (!) and i’m NOT a professional dog walker. But i sometimes need to dog sit for my neighbor’s 3 dachshund. Trying to control the 3 dogs (one older, another a year and 1/2 old (people years) and a puppy (just learning to walk on a leash) is difficult. So my neighbor gave me their leashes (that expand and contract and have a button to lock it). But that was very difficult to say the least! I was bribing my family to help and take 1 dog, etc. so i see your video. Great! So i order this leash (www.chewy.com/petsafe-hands-free-dog-leash/dp/48659) (actually 2 of them so i can have 2 leashes on my waist and can hold one in my hand). I had thought about doing a double leash to have them all on my waist but wasn’t sure if that would be good, although i may go back to chewy and get a double one, but i didn’t want to invest more. I have thought of a 3rd waist one (i really only need the leash with the two clips for each dog). If the link that each leash hooks to can’t hold all 3, i was thinking of putting a caribiner (sp?) hook to hold them all. Any thoughts? The older 2 dogs are very good - if i drop the leash, they stop and i can get it. But, the puppy just goes running-and i was worried about safety on roads, etc.

Their sniffing is another thing that stops the group and causes the tangle 😣.

    I am walking 4 dogs at the moment. (2 are mine and minding 2). I have my own lead set up and with just 2 dogs the swivels work perfectly. Never a tangle. However, with the 4 dogs we are finishing the walk with what resembles a plaited lead. Very difficult to untangle during the walk. Does it help to add more swivel points to the leads?

    This is great! I am looking to start a dog walking business. I do not want to walk more than 4 at a time. Would you ask the owner if they are comfortable walking their dog in a "pack" how would you properly introduce those dogs to know that their will be no fights between the dogs?

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  4 роки тому +1

      There are so many dog walkers that don't walk dogs in packs, so that's totally fine if you want less! Definitely ask the owner before choosing if the dog is solo or in a pack because everyone has their preference. You would need to talk with them beforehand anyway if they were going into a pack because you need to know the dog's personality VERY well in order to place it into a pack that it would get along with. Choosing dogs that would go good together is the first step (based on personality and energy level). Then, in order to form a pack you begin by introducing 2 dogs to each other (starting with dogs that are easy going and you're quite sure will get along well). Once they've been walking together happily for quite a while (I'm talking multiple days) you can add one more dog into the mix, and so on. It's important that they don't meet first in the car, or any other small space, because that will freak them out. On intro days I often have someone come to assist for that initial meeting, but often times the owner will do too

      @@InRuffCompany Good advice. I also read that the most important thing in introducing two dogs is to do it in a neutral territory. No place where they feel is their territory and must therefore defend it. Fenced dog parks could be good.

    Today, i walked two very energetic and active dogs from one home. I faced to a big problem! Those two dogs were very strong and out of my control... They were pulling me strongly that I lost my balance in the staircase. I was near to fall down from the stairs... I wanted to take them from the third floor. My hands got injured. More over, they were pulling me during walk and jumping on other pets and other ppl in the pavement.
    So, how can I handle this situation?

There arent any tips on this so im going off dog videos. Seeing as how i just follow the kittens around when i walk them to let them explore i dont know how it will go if i walk all three at once. For now i have three leashes and only one harness so it looks like we are gonna take turns till i can get two more harnesses.

I used to tether them to each other so it was basically me walking two dogs instead of 4 each pair had to go where ever the other wanted to sniff. It works great 👍🏾 I would recommend if you have dogs that get along ..... LOVE the knot idea.

    Mine pull alot! But when it comes to the harness, is it best to get them a front pull harness? Or a normal one that latches from the back?

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  4 роки тому +1

      In my experience, the front harness is better because it puts them off balance as they're walking, making it difficult to pull. I find that the back attaching harness encourages pulling, especially if you have a sledding-type dog because it gives them more power in their pull.

    I have 2 dogs, one is older at 8yo and more mellow and one is 2yo who is waaay more enthusiastic when walking, they're both close in size if that helps. Would it be possible to have them walk together? I've avoided taking them on walks together because I'm mindful of my older dog who gets tired more quickly now, and I don't want to frustrate my younger dog by having to slow down our pace.

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  4 роки тому

      Good question! I think that you can absolutely take them for a walk together because that social/pack aspect of it is good for them! But, you do want to be mindful of their different energy levels. How I've handled this in the past is I've started out with both of them, and then partway through dropped off the older dog at home and continued on with the younger dog. That way they both get the exercise that they need, and the social time together, and neither will have to compromise

    So when you're walking multiple dogs (3-6), are they all from the same client? Or are you picking up one dog here, going to another client's house & picking up the next dog, etc? I just wondered since you mentioned walking so many. How do you know all the dogs will get along if they're from different homes?

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  4 роки тому +1

      Hannah Harding yes, usually from different homes (some owners have 2 or more though). They aren’t ever put together in a group without meeting each other first. So I start out by introducing one dog to another one that I think will get along (personality-wise). Then on another day I will introduce another dog to those 2, and so on. It’s much safer for everyone if they ease into it. I usually will get someone to help on introduction days, as an extra set of hands in case they don’t get along. But as long as they have enough time to slowly get used to each other they are always fine! If any dog doesn’t get along well with others than he can’t go in a pack, he’ll get a private walk

I walk 3 dogs at the same time and they live in houses that are next to each other so it's easy to pick them up. Can't imagine how you could get more than that together at the same time if they live in different neighborhoods.

    • @InRuffCompany

      If they're far apart then the only way to walk them all together would be to have a car to pick them all up in. If you're on foot, though, you're exactly right, they need to be in the same neighborhood.

    Do you ever use slip leads?
    I’ve heard that other walkers swear by them, but I’m afraid that a dog will get out of them if they really wanted to

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  5 років тому +5

      I have only ever used one when I worked briefly in a dog day care, but tbh I'm not a fan of them. Many people think that it prevents a dog from escaping (and it does to a certain degree) but you're totally right, if they want to get out of them they could because it's not fastened to them. The major reason that I never use them, though, is that there is nothing to stop a slip lead from getting tighter and tighter around the neck the more that the dog pulls, so a dog can literally choke itself in it's excitement on the walk. People may disagree with me here of course, but that's just what I've seen through my experience. They are banned from use in Toronto by the government for that reason.

      I didn't realize you were in TO! I just left Scarborough and now I'm out in Kitchener and I started my company!

      PS, love your channel, it's not condescending, it's friendly, and honest.

      NO WAY! I actually grew up on a farm outside of Kitchener. We used to drive into Kitchener all the time to go to the movies, shopping, etc. So cool that you're there, I bet there are tons of people looking for dog walkers! I've seen slip leads all over the place in stores as well. From what I understand they're still allowed to be used, but not for walks. But, like I said, that may just be in Toronto, not other places. Thank you so much for the kind words, and good luck with your Kitchener dogs!

    Kindly, I disagree with tethering a leash to your waist specifically with large dog breeds. Properly holding a leash requires a quick release to prevent self-injury in the case of an emergency. I also don't recommend walking a dog or multiple dogs that actually walk you. When properly trained a handler should be able to walk multiple dogs who are obedient enough to ignore distractions such as another dog. Crossing the street is the easy way out, just my 2 cents. Thank you for your content.

    Good advice is to not walk your dogs off the lead on a shared path, and definitely do not use a retractable lead on pavements or shared paths.
