Fascinating video! It inspired me to share an interpretation I've been pondering regarding quantum superposition and multiverse theory. Consider this: what if observation only determines our "perspective" of an event without altering the event itself? Imagine being blindfolded and taken to a building in the city. Once the blindfold is removed, you might see the building from the front, back, or side. The building's other facets haven't disappeared; they're simply out of your field of view. This analogy suggests that all superpositions are potential perspectives that exist simultaneously, overlapping in a way that doesn't require extra universes or the constant creation/destruction of realities based on observation. I resonate with the notion that these perspectives are local, not universal. It underscores that observing an event doesn't change the fundamental nature of reality. Instead of viewing this through a three-dimensional lens, it's more akin to a quantum perspective-where all possibilities coexist even after a specific observation is made, only locking us into a given observational frame. This quantum viewpoint allows for a rich tapestry of realities, each as valid and real as the next, without directly influencing one another. Furthermore, there is no requirement for multiple observers to share the same perspective. Observers are likely to share narrowly adjacent perspectives of the same event, highlighting the individuality of perception and the subjective nature of reality within the quantum framework. Consider the analogy of a two-dimensional observer encountering a three-dimensional cube. From their plane, the cube's appearance might shift between a square, a hexagon, or a diamond, among other shapes, depending on the angle of observation. To the two-dimensional observer, the cube's shape seems to fluctuate unpredictably, giving an illusion of randomness. However, from a three-dimensional perspective, it's clear that these are not random variations but different facets of the same object. Similarly, quantum events may appear probabilistic to us due to our limited perspective, but this doesn't imply inherent randomness in the quantum realm itself. Rather, our observations reflect only a slice of a larger, deterministic structure that we are not fully equipped to perceive. These differing perspectives offer an intriguing parallel to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, suggesting that precise measurements-even from multiple sources-will not converge on the same quantum perspective, not because of inherent randomness but due to our dimensional limitations in observing the full quantum landscape.
Brilliant! I almost didn’t watch it because I used to believe that every ‘split’ of one universe into two would require two universes worth of matter/energy. But this is a gem of a trip. I’m proud to be a patreon patron who helped enable Nick to do this full time!
Glad I could help clear things up. I only recently learned the local thing myself. It makes more sense that way. (I'm still not sold on the idea, but at least it sound less ridiculous now.)
This is has been the most ingenious, engaging and craziest way of explaining the multiversal models I have ever seen! Especially as someone who has watched all the channels parodied in the video. Awesome job, Nick! Stay crazy!
Ironic (?) that you can make countless great videos on different science topics, and yet it's "silly" ones like this that will get peoples' attention. Oh well. Still, very engaging and interesting! (PS My desktop is a picture from the desert, and I will look at that and think there's another universe where everything is exactly the same, except one pebble is 1 cm to the left. Really brings home the concept of infinity to me.)
fun video! good impersonations too. I've got to say, to me, the popular quantum mechanics based version of the multiverse feels like a desperate attempt reject the possibility of true randomness in the universe. Not that its entirely unreasonable, but it feels like something more comfortable for human psychology, as odd as it is. "Weird but deterministic" keeps the "plan" so many people wish surrounds their lives intact, while true randomness throws it all out the window for many of them. I think the ideas people extract from it to make those scifi stories, that choices matter cosmically paired with "its not random, it all happens predictably just elsewhere" overrides the discomfort of other implications from those stories, so they become the pop culture interpretation.
The problem "many worlds" addresses isn't the randomness. It's the arbitrary and non-linear "wave function collapse" and the idea of an "observer". The traditional Copenhagen interpretation says the act of observation collapses the wave function, but it defines neither of those terms. It gives one set of rules for quantum systems and then says "but really there are classical Systems which don't obey them. So here's another set of rules" The many Worlds approach simply says these words are meaningless and all you need is use the same rules for everything. There are no classical systems but the observer and the measurement apparatus are also quantum systems. The many worlds are in the original quantum rules. This approach just takes them serious. While others get rid of them without explaining how or why they're there in the first place if you're not supposed to use them.
This might be my favorite video you've made! Your Matthew O'Dowd impersonation actually reminds me a lot more of Neil deGrasse Tyson in the Cosmos reboots though. Great job! Very clever April fools video.

Awesome video! The concept of some infinities being larger than others is very cool and hard to wrap your head around :) As for multiverses, I like to think there is a version of me in some distant universe that still has a full head of hair :). Thanks for mentioning me at the end of the video!

I've been watching all the other channels for years as well and i could not stop bursting xD You sir are a crazy(pun intended) genius for combining all this into an actual video with different "format", instead of just doing a 'silly' prank for the sake of it.
I told myself years ago that, if I was going to do an April Fools video, then it needed to be a video that I could upload any time of year but that is enhanced by being uploaded on April Fools day.
Dang, Nick! My first thought was, you friggin’ nailed it impersonating these channels. Kudos to you and spot on! Perfect way to present this topic! My second thought was, yup, I’m subscribed to all of these channels. This was a hoot! Mimicking is certainly the purest form of flattery! And then my last thought (after reading the comments) Holy crap, UA-cam has us all pegged. Everyone’s individual universe is entangled with everyone else’s universe via a something we certainly do not understand. (Is the TOE the UA-cam Algorithm?)
Oh yeah, that algorithm really knows its stuff. It only messes up every once in a while, but those are the times we usually notice it working. When it's working correctly, we don't usually even think about it.
Outstanding! I admit it took me a bit to catch on the first time but definitely got me to watch a couple times more to appreciate it. Great use of parody that only enhances the subject matter at hand. Speaking of ... I'm sure there are versions of your parody personalities in other multi-universes who would be like, wait .... what's the joke? That's me!
Thanks! I've been watching them a long time. (Over the last few years, I've become friends with Matt, Michael, and Arvin. They all got advanced warning I was making this video and were cool with it 👍.)
I thought cgp was gonna make a guest appearance but then the voice didnt change. Then he went to the next format and i had to check the description to see what was going on. Utterly brilliant.
First, that was absolutely awesome. A quick list of possible multiverses: Space-based: -Repeating universes in 3-D space -Parallel realms in 4-D or higher space -Mico-/macroverses Time based: -linear repeating universe -Crosstime (alternate timelines) -Phases Reality based: -Alternate realities. Not to be confused with alternate timelines. All of these together compose the Omniverse. And while some of these worlds are by definition not real except in their own context, they are useful for considering the nature of reality. For example, the speed of light is universal. It is the same everywhere in our universe, but can be something else in another. Meanwhile, mathe is omniversal. No reality can exist where 2+2=5. All of that was to set upo for this question. Is the standard model universal or omniversal? You seemed to go both ways with it at the end of the video.
3:56 LOL I instantly noticed who this impersonated. Brilliant. There is only one person on this entire planet who does that exact hand gesture til the end of times. I did hope for an Anton Petrov parody, but we don't live in the proper timeline for that to happen.
As a person who watches entirely too much science/education youtube, I have to say this was impressive, everything was pitch perfect.

So here's another set of rules"
The many Worlds approach simply says these words are meaningless and all you need is use the same rules for everything.
This was just brilliant. You're Matt O'Dowd is spot on. This just tickled me. Thank you so much for doing what you do. You really are amung the best on UA-cam.
You're welcome! Glad you liked it.
@@ScienceAsylum
Damn Matt lost a lot of hair=O But seriously , great vid and well executed , props to all you contents creators !
😆
The best part was the set of references to the other channels. You are awesome! The only one with such refined humor and knowledge at the same time. Thank you!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
An utter joy.. and yet full of the most challenging ideas. Few people can make us laugh and think at the same time.
Those impersonations! LOL!
14:33 how many takes did yo uneed in order to maintain your seriousness and not burst out laughing?
Great video, thank you all!
😆 I took a minute or so to "get in the zone" for that shot.
Ahaha, that’s a perfect Matt impression, you got his eyebrow movements down too, that little triangle that forms when you furrow, I know you practiced that in the mirror a lot lol.
Thanks! 😂 This video was a lot of acting work.
This is amazing, you nailed all the impressions! The effort you put in your videos is outstanding ✨
Thank you! 🤓
Shut up and take my money! This was hilariously awesome
Thanks for the support!
Oh man, i am so glad I'm catching up on your videos. The style switches to different UA-camrs was awesome.
I always though you were a genius but now you managed to take it to a whole next level! Brilliant video, man! Laughed from the beginning to the end! GENIUS NICK!
This must have been both very difficult and very fun to make, and you absolutely nailed it! I love it 😂 Next on the list, Sabine Hossenfelder!
for the maths part: Up and Atom
for the general info part: Anton Petrov
for the history part: Kings and Generals
I think "both very difficult and very fun to make" perfectly sums up the experience.
I’m going to watch this again to understand everything you said a bit better, but for now…this is your best video to date 😄 Superb job! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The sideways slide at 4.53 got my like and stopped me feeling grumpy at the idea of the universe in a larger infinite space which seemed at odds with some of Matt's wisdom.
Awesome video! The concept of some infinities being larger than others is very cool and hard to wrap your head around :) As for multiverses, I like to think there is a version of me in some distant universe that still has a full head of hair :). Thanks for mentioning me at the end of the video!
As a fellow commenter down below said, I didn't get the joke till the PBS spacetime style. Truly brilliant impersonations :) And again, such a great video. This is the first explanation on the multiverse I have seen that lifts it out of the realm of philosophy/weird stuff and puts some real down-to-earth science into it. And I loved the explanation of cosmic inflation - so clear! Thanks a bunch! 😊😊
I'm waiting for the comment from Matt on this video.
I gave Matt some warning that I was doing this, so he shouldn't be blind sided. 😆
When your hilarious impression of PBS SpaceTime ended, I was expecting to see Matt do an impression of you in your room 😂. That would be too much. Thanks for your great work and humor.
LMAO I LOVE ALL THE NODS!!! so creative!
i have to say the vsauce one is my favorite, right after the pbs one
I've been watching all the other channels for years as well and i could not stop bursting xD
You sir are a crazy(pun intended) genius for combining all this into an actual video with different "format", instead of just doing a 'silly' prank for the sake of it.
All the impersonations were on point. I have to admit the Numberphile one was my favorite.
That's me!
Well done! I saw at least 4 or 5 of my favorite UA-cam channels impersonated... including YOURS! LOL🤣
Wow you even pulled off Matt's "I don't blink, I only jumpcut" style. Just great attention to detail.
Thanks for another amazing video.
Damn that PBS spacetime had me laughing. At first I thought 'but what about the hands?' then sure enough you started in with the hand gestures 😁
😆😆
This video deserves multiversal acclaim.
I can't stop laughing after PBS impression 🤣
This was so good, really. Loved all the impressions. Bravo on the concept and bravo again on the execution.
15:30. I love that Arvin Ash.
Fantastic. Made me LOL. Can't imagine how much effort you must have put in to this whilst keeping a straight face. Thanks
The bloopers on this video are epic.
@@ScienceAsylum SHARE please!! 😂
Yes!!! Bloopers!
Great episode and very creative. I loved all the embedded references, hilarious and informative. Thanks!
Hahah the writing is hilarious here Nick, great one! Your take on Matt (PBS) is so cute, you need beard though 😃
It would have been epic to grown out a beard for the Matt and Michael segments, but I can't actually grow a beard anymore.
@@ScienceAsylum but you nailed them.. perhaps those are their multiverse versions 😉
I think my favourite bit is how you nailed PBS Spacetime's and Arvin Ash's hand gestures.
Matt's hand posture was priceless!!! Thank you for this!!
multiverse is an insane concept, and to think it just arises from the concept of one equation...
which is ONE interpretation, out of many others!
My favorite was "Matt" saying "says" in his very non-American way! Great video for content, too. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for noticing 😂
This has been so fun to watch! Such quirkily brilliant fun! Thank you so much that you exist in this universe!
First, that was absolutely awesome.
A quick list of possible multiverses:
Space-based:
-Repeating universes in 3-D space
-Parallel realms in 4-D or higher space
-Mico-/macroverses
Time based:
-linear repeating universe
-Crosstime (alternate timelines)
-Phases
Reality based:
-Alternate realities.
The Arvin Ash homage was brilliant😂, keep up the good work
😂😂😂Nick copying Matt’s facial expressions and hand placement…peculiarly well 😂. Awesome vid thanks!
13:27 Venezuela moment
As a science stream student ur channel is a goldmine for me 👑
Keep it up sir 🫡
Thanks! Glad you like it 🤓
3:56 LOL I instantly noticed who this impersonated. Brilliant.
There is only one person on this entire planet who does that exact hand gesture til the end of times.
I did hope for an Anton Petrov parody, but we don't live in the proper timeline for that to happen.
All the ester eggs were wholesome and funny
Great work
Thanks!
