    After I first watched the first movie, I was so excited to watch the sequel because I thought Pocahontas would come to see John Smith and they would have a sweet reunion but turns out they completely twisted his entire personality. I'm reallyyyy disappointed that they changed the sweet romance between John Smith and Pocahontas and she fell for John Rolfe instead, even though historically she did marry John Rolfe. I don't care if it's historical or not, ITS LITERALLY A MOVIE and the relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas was so sweet and endearing that it doesn't even make sense that disney made it so the first movie doesn't relate to the sequel at all! Sorry for all my ranting, I'm just saying my honest opinion :)

      @@cupcakegirlpoweredits9732 ok. Let’s rewind: 1) I’m talking PURELY about the DISNEY movie. I’m not comparing it to the real Pocahontas and John Smith, given I already knew as a kid they definitely weren’t lovers, and I didn’t even watch Pocahontas until I was like 18. 2) He literally says after she declined his offer to come with him, he wanted to stay with her. He even admitted he doesn’t consider London his home and never really belonged anywhere. He even admitted he didn’t expect anything different from her world, indicating he was getting kinda bored of exploring. 3) I do agree its a slightly small problem that he didn’t shoot her because of her beauty. But he hesitated because she didn’t run or attack him. The important thing is his love is NOT about he was madly in love with her looks. Its purely about how she showed him just how wrong he was about so much, and finally seeing how beautiful the world is, and his way of life was going to destroy it unless he changed. He does NOT struggle with racism or stereotyping her people after that scene, given he literally argues with his boss about the war. I just don’t get what else this dude had to do to make it painfully obvious he deeply regrets his former behavior and truly wants to help establish peace, and apparently him protecting Thomas, willing to try and talk with her dad, telling Pocahontas he is ready to die, and ultimately forgiving Powhatan by choosing to die in his place isn’t enough. Tell me, what could’ve he done differently in the story to make it painfully obvious he isn’t the same man in the end? Just because he’s problematic at first doesn’t mean he deserves to burn in hell or justify Pocahontas chose Rolfe over him. 4) The sequel literally threw his character under the bus to make him into an absolute asshole who didn’t really care about Pocahontas as a person, instead as “his girl” or delicate flower he doesn’t believe is strong enough to defend herself. The way he acted the entirety in the sequel is the complete opposite of his original character. Heck, when she admits she doesn’t love him anymore, he isn’t even shocked or heartbroken, more just bummed. I was expecting a mix of emotions from the first time he tried to kiss her and the original’s ending with him begging to stay with her over going back without her. NOT “Oh, bummer. Well, I don’t really care about you anymore and I’m going exploring whether or not you’re coming. See ya never” and I DESPISE how much of a butthole he was turned into to try and make Rolfe look like the perfect choice who actually cared about Pocahontas and understood her feelings about her people much better than Smith ever did, which flat out isn’t true. Like the dude felt so awful when Kocuom was accidentally murdered by his friend because he never wanted any of Pocahontas’s friends or family to get hurt.

    I’m in the minority here but I actually like this film more than the first. Yeah come at me lolll.
    Sure the animation downgraded but it’s still definitely watchable and doesn’t deter me from liking the film. There’s also some surprising bangers here like “Where Do I Go From Here”, “What a Day in London” & “Between Two Worlds”.
    Not only because in real life, she did marry Rolfe, but in the movie I liked how he was portrayed as a man that fell in love with her in a more realistic manner. They had arguments but he respected her stances as well as supported her in instances like 1:38 whereas Smith fell in love with the idea of her, seeing her as this exotic woman; plus he was more inclined to his ambition of exploration than staying with her.
    In the live action film, this is further explored showing how Smith left her for his ambition to “find his indies” whereas Rolfe respected and took things slowly with her, even to the point that he was ready to let her go when Smith came back.
    Spoilers…she didn’t, she realized she had gotten over Smith and saw that what they had had been a fantasy. She matured and truly had fallen for Rolfe and got her closure with Smith.
    I also appreciated how they portrayed the dynamic between both men. They never fight over her but instead are friendly buddies that tease each other like in 0:59 & 1:27.
    Also please note that I’m talking about the MOVIE portrayals here, and not about her real life. All I’ve read is that she married Rolfe and that there was no romance with Smith as far as we know.

      Agreed. I've always loved the second movie. Was never a fan of the first (romance wise, but i loved Pocahontas). Mainly because even as a kid I was kinda weirded out of the idea of her and Smith since she was always my favorite to learn about in history. But taking out history, Smith would have killed her if she weren't hot, but he did grow into a better character of course. Maybe Rolfe is just more my type, Idk, but I've always loved them.

      @@cupcakegirlpoweredits9732 uh, I do understand that the waterfall encounter is a tad problematic in that he spared her because of her beauty. But his love truly came from how wise she was and she literally called him a savage back. He literally admitted it in If I Never Knew You how deeply he regretted how he used to view people like her, and how blind he was. And that’s why he loves her so much is because she got him to see how wrong he was about so much, and how beautiful the world was!
      Rolfe imo fell in love with her when she fit his definition of beauty, and kept trying to change her into something she just isn’t, similar to Kocuom. I strongly recommend you rewatch Pocahontas.

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 Рік тому +5

      Hey! I respect your opinions but here’s mine. Please note I have never watched the New World, nor ever plan to because I know she’s romanticized with Rolfe instead (and it was meant to be a lot more accurate to her real life story) I’m only going by the Disney movies:
      -The animation and art is so cringy when compared the original. Even the natives were portrayed more stereotypically, especially her dad and Utti with large noses and ears, and their skintone going from copper to chocolate milk. Plus I don’t like how Pocahontas had the shiny eye look the entire movie, it made her look more like a teen instead of I’m guessing she’s supposed to be at least 20 in the sequel, given she was 18 in the original. They only used the shiny eye look in the original whenever she was tearing or crying, which made her look more beautiful. And in comparison to other sequels, the animation is terrible to the point her deerskin is literally drawn wrong in a scene, and her necklace looked clunky, specifically the silver piece.
      -Music. Only song I genuinely loved was Where Do I Go, as I found it also fit John Smith’s compass being the symbol of her love for him, and now that he was dead she felt lost again, and having it was just too painful and she had to let him die in her heart to truly begin the healing process. And any embers of hope he’d maybe come back or survived had to be permanently snuffed this time. That doesn’t change I still found it so insulting Disney deliberately chose not to show her learning of his death to prevent her feelings from loving only him from making Rolfe her love interest. It’s not like grief was too mature for children, given the Lion King Simba watched Mufasa die in front of him and the movie was all about him accepting it wasn’t his fault. Anyways, all the other songs were boring. Day in London literally felt like a knockoff of Belle to the point it gave me a headache with the townsfolk literally interrupting each other instead of singing consecutively like in Belle. Trust in John was just so annoying, almost as bad as Guy Like You from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and it made Ms. Jenkins even more annoying with her key role aside the pet sitter as freaking matchmaker for Pocahontas and John Rolfe. Sadly even Between Two Worlds is nowhere near the legendary level of If I Never Knew You. I did actually enjoy the reprisal of Where Do I Go, despite unfortunately its purpose was to confirm Pocahontas had truly moved on from John Smith and he wasn’t the same man she fell in love with anymore. But Between Two Worlds isn’t nearly on the same level as Love Will Find a Way or I Didn’t Know I Could Feel This Way. So even the soundtrack couldn’t save it
      -Ok. Here’s where WW3 broke out. I majorly disagree with your opinion about how Rolfe and Smith treated her in their separate movies (I mean Smith in the original movie, not how he acted in the sequel) Rolfe and Pocahontas literally argued both encounters, and he was pretty sexist at first and complained about her gender, even almost refusing to take her instead just because “she’s a girl” I felt they were hardly even friends when they finally arrived in London, and a couple of songs later are BAM “in love??” I also felt Pocahontas was a bit of a brat and immature in the sequel, given she begged Rolfe to take her with him to see the king, and even pouted after he tried explaining it was unwise to go to the king unannounced and she couldn’t just approach him spontaneously, especially when she’s viewed as less than a peasant. I also felt they didn’t even try to get to know each other the ENTIRE voyage to London, she literally had 4 months more with him than she did with Smith, given the original’s timeline I believe was less than a month. Here’s where sh*t hit the fan: Rolfe got her a dumb necklace to make her fit in better, not even realizing how important her necklace was, as it connected her to her people, parents and even John Smith as it was meant to be worn at her wedding. He ended up falling in love with her when she was plastered with makeup and a WHITEWASHING ballgown to make her look lighter and a civilized lady of English society instead of a Native American princess who was ready to fight for her people. Fast forward to when he puts her necklace back on, I feel he still doesn’t really understand her that much aside he can see she’s determined and there’s no stopping her, and he supports her completely even if she’s completely nuts for wanting to see the king again after literally calling him a savage and embarrassing him in front of his subjects. Fast forward to the end after she dumped Smith, I felt his decision to leave his position in court and luxurious lifestyle was rushed and felt it completely came out of nowhere, given he had no interest in the New World and only went there originally to collect her dad for the peace treaty. I just can’t see him being able to go from a luxurious lifestyle to living a much more simple lifestyle in her village. Doesn’t help he doesn’t even have the same personality or interests as her. Like his character was designed to be the complete opposite of John Smith, physically and personality with him having a more refined taste in the more elegant things in life.
      John Smith in the original fit Pocahontas to a T.

This is so much unrealistic that I turned the movie off in the middle of their ship scene. No man ever, ever would sacrifice his whole career and a lifestyle for a woman, no matter her beauty is, that's the brutal truth and thats one of the dumb unrealistic expectations Disney sets in this joke of a film. as in John Rolfe is descendent of Hercules, u no what I mean ⚡🏺💙🧡💙❤
      theory #1: John Rolfe is descendent of Hercules. Perhaps, somewhere along the line, Hercules died (remember, he gave up godhood in order to live with Megara), but his son Therimachus continued his father's lineage and had romantic relationship with Hebe and they had children together, one of their children became John Rolfe in The Conquest Of New World Era. Descendents of Hercules lineage are noted to be incredibly strong, attractive and capable of physical combat, which makes sense.
      theory #2: John Rolfe and Hercules are one and the same person, but in the different movies. Suppose Hercules retained godhood and thus he is immortal. In addition to immense strength, he can also shapeshift and always disguises himself as an attractive mortal man. So, he was in other eras but he took form of John Rolfe in The Conquest Of New Era.
      John Rolfe looks like Hercules in so many ways. Physical appearance wise, both are tall, both have medium length wavy hair that is either brown or ginger, both have eyes that are either green or blue, both have wide shoulders and both are athletically built and muscular, both are dressed in warm colors (John Rolfe is dressed in red and gold, Hercules is dressed in orange). In terms of personality, both are brave, courageous, selfless, generous, kind, polite and all around good at heart. In terms of abilities, both are strong and are rather good at fighting and use swords as weapons.

      I disagree. Pocahontas and John Smith were changed a lot more than any other Disney characters in the sequels to force her stupid fling with Rolfe work. The REAL characters wouldn’t have let each other go that easily. For crying out loud if you watched If I Never Knew You you’d see how deeply in love they were and it broke Pocahontas’s heart feeling everything was her fault and everyone hated her, including him. But that wasn’t true at all, as he gently reassures her meeting her is the best thing that’s ever happened to him! He even says he’d rather die than live a life full of adventures but he’d never meet her. That pretty much shatters the entire “John Smith deep down wanted to keep exploring and would’ve never have been truly happy living a simple life in her village with her.” You do realize his sequel persona is nothing like he was in the original, and it was deliberately made that way to make him look like a selfish, immature, jealous ex who viewed Pocahontas as a trophy wife instead of genuinely caring about her feelings and safety, to validate why she chose Rolfe instead. I will NEVER forgive Disney for making him into a complete jerk and immature ex to try and force Pocahontas to choose a different man who didn’t actually love her until she was who he wanted

      @@tijanamilenkovic9442 if you’re talking Disney no. First off the sequel ends with her simply returning home with John Rolfe. The name Thomas was literally used for John’s friend in the first movie as a nod to the real Pocahontas’s English child. And secondly Disney literally confirmed the sequel isn’t canon

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 Рік тому +2

      @Will N and you got this information where? You do realize Disney didn’t even want to create Pocahontas 2 because even they knew changing her love interest to John Rolfe (for historical accuracy reasons) was going to infuriate a lot of fans. I don’t think Pocahontas was planned for a series either, partly because her movie works a lot better without continuity, despite I REALLY wanted her to become Pocahontas Smith in the sequel 😭
      Plus her and her dad being unable to understand English would majorly contradict the original with Pocahontas obviously understanding John perfectly, and once Powhatan was willing to listen he was able understand as well, along with the colonizers aside Ratcliffe. Also, the sequel NEVER mentions John Rolfe or John Smith being Christians, and before marrying Rolfe Pocahontas because a Christian. The entire sequel’s message is about being true to who she truly is, and using the spirits around her to remember who she truly is.
      And also Thomas’s name was already used in the original movie as a nod to her son.

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 Рік тому +1

      @Will N 1. I’m pretty sure Disney made it clear Disney Descendants aren’t canonical descendants of the animated couples. I’m not into the series either, so no comment
      2. Yes, they were listening with their hearts, BUT Thomas perfectly understood when Pocahontas said he killed Kocuom. He obviously wasn’t using the magic. And John clearly understood her dad shout at him he was dying at sunrise. And undoubtedly her dad was waay too mad to listen/open his heart to understand John if he tried saying he could help Kocuom (if he hadn’t died) Plus there is absolutely no way Pocahontas was able to speak fluently without magic when she met Rolfe, given 1, English is literally the hardest language to learn for foreigners, and 2, they literally argued at their first encounter, and 3, it takes YEARS to learn another language that well, believe me I’ve been learning a bit of Japanese (which isn’t easy) So no
      3. I completely understand the outrage and anger from Indigenous people of having basically a public mockery of a real Indigenous woman forced to fall in love with someone they were taught was just as awful as the other colonizers. And I completely agree that if Disney had just used different names and made it clear it wasn’t meant to represent how colonizers actually were towards Native Americans, this movie wouldn’t have been nearly as controversial and more beloved. I even know of some Indigenous folks who absolutely love the movie and don’t care about the real story. That doesn’t change the people who hated it hated the sequel even more because it was hardly more historically accurate, so as an ultimate result it ended up ruining the beautiful love story for the rest of us who actually enjoyed the movie. Legit its pretty hard for me to see someone say they like Rolfe more than Smith tbh. Case in point, Pocahontas would’ve definitely ended up with John Smith if their names weren’t those, instead of forcing her to choose another man. Like the love story between Pocahontas and Rolfe isn’t even enjoyable or interesting. Its all Rolfe falling for her as a civilized lady in an English dress, and then despite they were hardly even friends upon arriving in London, all of a sudden are deeply in love? Smith had completely embraced her as a Native American, and despite he’s a bit stupid at first, he does end up deeply regretting his previous actions and behavior.
      4. Basically almost all of the Renaissance movies except Mulan had cheap animation. Pocahontas and Hunchback of Notre Dame are tied for the cringiest and most disturbing animation. Like Lady and the Tramp 2 actually had pretty good animation, and even Cinderella 3, and both Little Mermaid movies. But especially Lion King 2. Legit Pocahontas and her people were freaking whitewashed and presented in a more stereotypical manner that was NEVER shown in the original. Like when Powhatan spoke to Rolfe in broken English, or having an obese man during the festival. Or even Pocahontas always had this dumb shiny eye look which made her look younger and more immature imo. She doesn’t look older or wiser, which is the point when she breaks up with Smith is she isn’t willing to give up her people for him, and already let him go a long time ago, and he must accept she moved on and only loves him as a friend.
      5. That’s up to each individual person, I know with beloved movies like Little Mermaid a lot of people absolutely loved Melody, and also the third movie imo was pretty cute except the villain. Like despite Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 is a huge embarrassment to how dark and mature the original was, some actually enjoyed seeing Quasimodo finding love with Madeleine, and I agree. I wish it focused more on Zephyr instead, and Quasi and Madeleine’s love story was a side story instead, because they made it waay too obvious the movie was about Quasi getting a girlfriend after seeing his heart broken so badly by Esmerelda choosing Phoebus, poor guy
      -One other note. This is from a different video comment. I’m doing a rewrite of Pocahontas which will include different names entirely to make it clear it’s not to be associated with the real story of Pocahontas aka Matoaka. What could’ve John done differently in the story after Colors of the Wind to show he’s truly sorry about how he acted? Is there a specific scene he seems to be arrogant or whatever? I’ve watched Pocahontas hundreds of times and I still can’t figure out which scene you’re talking about. Thank you

He said he wants to be anywhere w Pocahontas he even said that he wants to stay w her in her land as long as she’s w him, yet they change his whole personality making Pocahontas be w John Rolfe and that jst made me so mad

      @@cupcakegirlpoweredits9732I didn’t watch a lot of Disney growing up, some of the movies we did own were the worst ones like Chicken Little or Home on the Range. I understand you said you saw the sequel first and that’s mainly why you prefer Rolfe instead. Imo Pocahontas 2 is easily the worst sequel even if you don’t compare it to the original movie. The first one was such a masterpiece in so many ways, despite it wasn’t as popular as the movies before it. But it had deeper and more mature themes and messages, and I honestly loved how Pocahontas and John Smith fell in love. It wasn’t instant like a lot of Disney couples, they started out as friends who simply shared a lot in common, but even then Pocahontas wasn’t ready to let him kiss her. Now I know Rolfe and Poca actually couldn’t stand each other at first and were so upset when they got stuck together to go back to London to save the New World from war. But I felt the romance between Rolfe and Pocahontas was nonexistent but also Rolfe literally fell in love with her when she wasn’t her true self and stuck in a dress just to impress him. I just feel their romance was so flat and nonexistent it was a huge insult to the original movie to see her ending up with Rolfe instead. It was basically a f*ck you to fans of the movie and majority that loved her with John Smith instead.

      @@cupcakegirlpoweredits9732also I disagree with your opinion of “John Smith would’ve killed without a second thought if Pocahontas wasn’t beautiful” I get where you’re coming from and it is a slightly small problem in the encounter, making it seem like John mainly liked her beauty instead of her personality. That is NOT why he fell in love with her. He doesn’t ever mention in the entire movie how beautiful she is, the song If I Never Knew You perfectly shows where his love truly came from, her getting him to understand how wrong he was about so much and seeing the world through her eyes. Like Beast, Eric and Aladdin ALL had dialogue in their movies where they called their girls beautiful. Heck, that’s the main reason why Beast let Belle trade places with her dad was because he needed a woman to break the spell and all Beast saw was a beautiful woman with a kind heart, until she rightfully gets mad at him several times

      Yep! This sequel is by far the worst one easily. Even as its own story without the original I nearly fell asleep the first time I tried watching it. Legit this movie was terrible in basically every way: boring music except the first song, animation, colors were not of the wind, the natives were literally stereotyped when it came to reproduction, the plot was literally all over the place and felt less than half baked, especially with the story trying to convince us Pocahontas was genuinely over John Smith and was truly in love with Rolfe now. Legit their love story is so crammed and forced imo, given they literally argued several times, something she only did once with John Smith, and that was simply unavoidable
